I'll begin today

අද මම පටන් ගන්නම්

by sharing a poem

කවියක් ඔබත් එක්ක බෙදා ගනිමින්

written by my friend from Malawi,

මගේ මලාවි ජාතික මිතුරිය

Eileen Piri.

අයිලින් පිරි විසින් ලියූ

Eileen is only 13 years old,

අයිලීන්ට තාම වයස අවුරුදු දහතුනයි.

but when we were going through the collection of poetry that we wrote,

ඒත් අපි ලියපු කවි එකතුව බලන විට

I found her poem so interesting,

ඇගේ මේ කවිය ගොඩක් ආකර්ෂණීයයි,

so motivating.

හිතට දිරි දෙනවා

So I'll read it to you.

ඉතිං මම කවිය කියවන්නම්

She entitled her poem "I'll Marry When I Want."

ඈ කවිය නම් කර තියෙන්නේ, "මට ඕන දවසකයි මම බඳින්නේ" කියලයි

(Laughter)

(සිනා)

"I'll marry when I want.

මට ඕන දවසකයි මම බඳින්නේ

My mother can't force me to marry.

අම්මට බෑ මට බල කරන්න

My father cannot force me to marry.

මගේ තාත්තටත් බැහැ

My uncle, my aunt,

මගේ මාමා, නැන්දා

my brother or sister,

මගේ අයියා, අක්කා

cannot force me to marry.

කාටවත් ම බැහැ මට බඳින්න බලකරන්න

No one in the world

මේ ලෝකෙ කිසි කෙනෙකුට

can force me to marry.

බැහැ මට බඳින්න බල කරන්න

I'll marry when I want.

මම බඳින්නෙ මට ඕනෑ දවසක

Even if you beat me,

මට කෙතරම් තැළුවත්

even if you chase me away,

මා පළවා හැරියත්

even if you do anything bad to me,

මොන නපුරක් මට කළත්,

I'll marry when I want.

මට ඕනෑ දවසටයි මම බඳින්නේ,

I'll marry when I want,

මට ඕනෑ දවසටයි මම බඳින්නේ,

but not before I am well educated,

මම උගත් ගැහැණියක් වෙන්න කළින් නම් නොවේමැයි

and not before I am all grown up.

වැඩිවියට පැමිණෙන්න කළින් නම් නොවේමැයි

I'll marry when I want."

මට ඕනෑ දවසකයි මම බඳින්නේ

This poem might seem odd,

අවුරුදු දහතුනක දැරියක් මේ වගේ කවියක්

written by a 13-year-old girl,

ලියපු එකේ අමුත්තක් දැනෙන්න පුළුවන්

but where I and Eileen come from,

ඒත් අයිලීන්ගෙයි මගෙයි රටේ නම්,

this poem, which I have just read to you,

මේ කවිය, මම දැන් ඔබට කියවපු කවිය

is a warrior's cry.

සටන්කාරියකගේ ආයාචනයක්

I am from Malawi.

මගේ රට මලාවි

Malawi is one of the poorest countries,

මලාවි කියන්නේ ලෝකේ දුප්පත් ම රටක්

very poor,

ගොඩාක් දුප්පත්

where gender equality is questionable.

ස්ත්‍රී පුරුෂ සමානාත්මතාව ඉතාම ගැටලුකාරීයි

Growing up in that country,

ඒ රටේ හැදී වැඩෙනවා කියන එකේ තේරුම තමයි,

I couldn't make my own choices in life.

මගේ ජීවිතේ මට ඕනෑ තීරණ ගන්න නොහැකි වීම

I couldn't even explore

මට අවස්ථාවක් නොමැති වීම

personal opportunities in life.

ජීවිතේ පුද්ගලික අවශ්‍යතා සොයා බලන්නවත්

I will tell you a story

මම ඔබට කතාවක් කියන්නම්

of two different girls,

ගෑණු ළමයි දෙන්නෙක් ගැන

two beautiful girls.

හරිම ලස්සන ගෑණු ළමයි දෙන්නෙක් ගැන

These girls grew up

මේ ගෑණු ළමයි දෙන්නා

under the same roof.

එකම වහලක් යට හැදී වැඩුණා.

They were eating the same food.

ඒගොල්ලො කෑවෙ එකම කෑම

Sometimes, they would share clothes,

සමහර විට එකම ඇඳුම් මාරු කරගෙන ඇන්දා

and even shoes.

සමහර විට එකම සපත්තු දැම්මා.

But their lives ended up differently,

ඒත් ඒගොල්ලන්ගෙ ජීවිත අවසන් උනේ වෙනස් විදියට

in two different paths.

වෙනස් මාර්ග දෙකකින්

The other girl is my little sister.

අනෙක් ගෑණු ළමයා තමයි මගේ පුංචි නංගි

My little sister was only 11 years old

මගේ පුංචි නංගිට වයස අවුරුදු එකොළහක් විතරයි

when she got pregnant.

එයාට දරුවෙක් ලැබෙන්න එනකොට

It's a hurtful thing.

ඒක හරිම වේදනාකාරී දෙයක්

Not only did it hurt her, even me.

ඒක එයාට විතරක් නෙමෙයි, මටත් වේදනාකාරීයි

I was going through a hard time as well.

මමත් ගත ක ෙළ් දුෂ්කර කාල සීමාවක්

As it is in my culture,

මගේ සංස්කෘතියේ විදියට

once you reach puberty stage,

ගෑණු ළමයෙක් වැඩිවිය පැමිෙණන වයසට ආවම,

you are supposed to go to initiation camps.

එයා ආරම්භක කඳවුරකට යන්න ඕනෑ

In these initiation camps,

මේ කඳවුරුවල දී

you are taught how to sexually please a man.

පිරිමියෙක්ව ලිංගිකව සතුටු කරන්නේ කොහොමද කියලා උගන්නනවා.

There is this special day,

සුවිෙශ්ෂ දිනයක් දිනයක් තියෙනවා

which they call "Very Special Day"

සුවිෙශ්ෂ දිනයක් කියලා කියන මේ දවසෙ දී

where a man who is hired by the community

ගමේ අය එකතු වෙලා පිරිමි කෙනෙක් කුළියට ගන්නවා

comes to the camp

එයා කඳවුරට ඇවිත්

and sleeps with the little girls.

මේ පුංචි ගෑණු ළමයි එක්ක යහන්ගත වෙනවා

Imagine the trauma that these young girls

මේ දැරියෝ කොතරම් කම්පනයට පත්වෙනවද කියලා හිතලා බලන්න

go through every day.

දවසින් දවස

Most girls end up pregnant.

ගොඩක් ගෑණු ළමයි ගර්භණී වෙනවා

They even contract HIV and AIDS

ඒගොල්ලන්ට HIV, ඒඩ්ස්

and other sexually transmitted diseases.

වෙනත් ලිංගිකව බෝවන රෝග පවා හැදෙනවා.

For my little sister, she ended up being pregnant.

මගේ පුංචි නංගි ගර්භණී වුනා.

Today, she's only 16 years old

තාම එයාට වයස අවුරුදු දාසයයි.

and she has three children.

එයාට දරුවෝ තුන් දෙනෙක් ඉන්නවා.

Her first marriage did not survive,

එයාගෙ පළවෙනි කසාදෙ පැවතු නේ නෑ

nor did her second marriage.

දෙවැනි එකත් එහෙමයි

On the other side, there is this girl.

එතකොට අනෙක් ගෑණු ළමයා දිහා බැලුවම,

She's amazing.

එයා නම් පුදුමාකාරයි.

(Laughter)

(සිනා)

(Applause)

I call her amazing because she is.

මම එයාට පුදුමාකාරයි කියන්නේ එයා ඇත්තෙන් ම එහෙම නිසා

She's very fabulous.

එයා හරි අපූරුයි

That girl is me. (Laughter)

ඒ ගෑණු ළමයා තමයි මම (සිනා)

When I was 13 years old,

මට වයස අවුරුදු 13ක් වෙනකොට

I was told, you are grown up,

මට කිිව්වා දැන් ඔයා ලොකුයි

you have now reached of age,

නියම වයසට පැමිණිලා ඉන්නේ

you're supposed to go to the initiation camp.

ඔයා දැන් ආරම්භක කඳවුරට යන්න ඕනෑ කියලා

I was like, "What?

ඒක මොන විකාරයක් ද කියලා මට හිතුණා.

I'm not going to go to the initiation camps."

මම යන්නෙ නෑ අරම්භක කඳවුරට

You know what the women said to me?

ඔබ දන්නවද වැඩිහිටි ගැහැණූ අය මට මොනවද කිව්වෙ කියලා

"You are a stupid girl. Stubborn.

උඹ මහ මෝඩ කෙල්ලක්, හරි හිතුවක්කාරයි

You do not respect the traditions of our society, of our community."

උඹ අපේ සිරිත්විරිත්වලට සංස්කෘතියට ගරු කරන්නේ නෑ

I said no because I knew where I was going.

මම යන්න බැහැ කිව්වේ, මම යන්නෙ මොන වගේ තැනකටද කියලා දැනගෙන හිටපු නිසා

I knew what I wanted in life.

ජීවිතේ මගේ අපේක්ෂා මොනවද කියලා මම දැනගෙන හිටියා

I had a lot of dreams as a young girl.

පුංචි දැරියක් විදියට මට හීන ගොඩක් තිබුණා.

I wanted to get well educated,

මට ඕනෑ උ ෙණ් හොඳට ඉගෙනගන්න

to find a decent job in the future.

අනාගතේ හොඳ රස්සාවක් හොයාගන්න.

I was imagining myself as a lawyer,

මම නීතිඥවරියක් වෙනවා කියලා මම හිතුවා

seated on that big chair.

අර ගාම්භීර පුටුවෙ වාඩිවෙලා

Those were the imaginations that

ඒ වගේ අපේක්ෂාවන් තමයි

were going through my mind every day.

හැමදාම මගෙ හිතේ තිබු ෙණ්

And I knew that one day,

මම දැනගෙන හිටියා කවදාහරි දවසක

I would contribute something, a little something to my community.

මම මගේ සමාජයට මොනවහරි දෙයක් පුංචි දෙයක් හරි කරනවා කියලා

But every day after refusing,

දවස ගානෙ ම කඳවුරට යන්න බෑ කිව්වම,

women would tell me,

වැඩිහිටි කාන්තාවෝ මට කිව්වෙ,

"Look at you, you're all grown up. Your little sister has a baby.

බලපන් උඹ දිහා, දැන් උඹ ලොකුයි උ ෙඹ් නංගිට දරුවෙකුත් ඉන්නවා

What about you?"

උඹට මොකද වෙන්නෙ?

That was the music that I was hearing every day,

ඒ අඬවැඩියාව තමයි මට හැමදාම ඇහුනේ

and that is the music that girls hear every day

ඒ අඬවැඩියාව තමයි ගෑණු ළමයින්ට හැමදාම ඇහෙන්නේ

when they don't do something that the community needs them to do.

සමාජයෙන් කරන්න කියන දේවල් නොකළා ම

When I compared the two stories between me and my sister,

මගේ කතාවයි නංගිගෙ කතාවයි සසඳා බලන කොට

I said, "Why can't I do something?

මම හිතුවා ඇයි මට මොනවා හරි කරන්න බැරි කියලා

Why can't I change something that has happened for a long time

කාලයක් තිස්සෙ පැවතුණු දෙයක් වෙනස් කරන්න මට බැරි ඇයි කියලා

in our community?"

මගේ සමාජයේ

That was when I called other girls

ඊට පස්සෙ තමයි මම අනෙක් ගැහැණු ළමයින්ට කතා ක ෙළ්

just like my sister, who have children,

මගේ නංගි වගේ ම දරුවෝ ඉන්න අනෙක් අයට

who have been in class but they have forgotten how to read and write.

එයාලා පාසැල් ගිහින් තියෙනවා ඒත් ලියන කියවන විදිය අමතක වෙලා.

I said, "Come on, we can remind each other

මම කිව්වා එන්න අපි එකිනෙකා ආෙයෙත් මතක් කර ගමු කියලා

how to read and write again,

ලියන්නෙ කියවන්නෙ කොහොමද කියලා

how to hold the pen, how to read, to hold the book."

පෑන අල්ලන්නෙ කොහොමද, කියවන්නෙ කොහොමද?පොත අල්ලන්නෙ කොහොමද...

It was a great time I had with them.

ඒ අයත් එක්ක මම අපූරු කාලයක් ගෙව්වා.

Nor did I just learn a little about them,

මම ඒගොල්ලො ගැන ටිකක් ඉගෙන ගත්තා විතරක් නෙමෙයි.

but they were able to tell me their personal stories,

ඒ අයගෙ පුද්ගලික කතාත් එයාලා මට කිව්වා

what they were facing every day

එයාලා දිනපතා මුහුණ පාන දේවල් ගැන

as young mothers.

ලාබාල මව්වරුන් විදියට

That was when I was like,

එතකොට තමයි මට හිතුනේ

'Why can't we take all these things that are happening to us

ඇයි අපිට බැරි මේ සිද්ධ වෙන දේවල් ඔක්කොම

and present them and tell our mothers, our traditional leaders,

අපේ අම්මලාට අපේ සාම්ප්‍රදායික නායකයන්ට කියන්න කියලා

that these are the wrong things?"

මේවා වැරදි දේවල් බව

It was a scary thing to do,

ඒක හරිම අවදානම් සහගත දෙයක්

because these traditional leaders,

මොකද මේ සාම්ප්‍රදායික නායකයෝ

they are already accustomed to the things

සිරිත් විරිත්වලට හැඩ ගැහිලා ඉන්නේ

that have been there for ages.

කාලයක් තිස්සේ සමාජයේ පැවති සිරිත්වලට

A hard thing to change,

වෙනසක් කරන එක හරිම අමාරුයි

but a good thing to try.

ඒත් උත්සාහ කරලා බලන එක හොඳයි.

So we tried.

ඉතිං අපි උත්සාහ කළා

It was very hard, but we pushed.

ඒක හරිම දුෂ්කරයි. ඒත් අපි පුළුවන් තරම් වෑයම් කළා

And I'm here to say that in my community,

මම අද කියන්න කැමතියි, මගේ සමාජය තමයි

it was the first community after girls

දැරියන්ගේ උත්සාහය නිසා වෙනස් වුණු පළමු ප්‍රජාව

pushed so hard to our traditional leader,

දැරියන් සාම්ප්‍රදායික නායකයන්ට කළ බලපෑම් නිසා

and our leader stood up for us and said no girl has to be married

නායකයින් අපි වෙනුවෙන් නැගී සිටියා ඒඅය කිව්වා කිසිම දැරියක්

before the age of 18.

කසාද බඳින්න ඕනෑ නෑ අවුරුදු 18ට කළින් කියලා

(Applause)

In my community,

මගේ ප්‍රජාව තුළ

that was the first time a community,

තමයි පළවෙනි වතාවට, ප්‍රජාවක් තුළ

they had to call the bylaws,

අතුරුනීති පැනවීමක් අවශ්‍ය වු ෙණ්

the first bylaw that protected girls

දැරියන් ආරක්ෂා කරන පළමු අතුරුනීති

in our community.

අපගේ ප්‍රජාව තුළ තමයි.

We did not stop there.

අපි එතැනින් නැවතුනේ නෑ.

We forged ahead.

අපි තවත් ඉස්සරහට ගියා.

We were determined to fight for girls not just in my community,

මේ ප්‍රජාවට සීමා නොවී,

but even in other communities.

අනෙක් දැරියන් වෙනුවෙනුත් සටන් කරන්න අපි අදිටන් කරගත්තා.

When the child marriage bill was being presented in February,

පෙබරවාරියේදී ළමා විවාහ පිළිබඳ කෙටුම්පත ඉදිරිපත් කරන්න

we were there at the Parliament house.

අපි පාර්ලිමේන්තුවට ගියා.

Every day, when the members of Parliament were entering,

මන්ත්‍රීවරුන් පාර්ලිමේන්තුවට ඇතුළු වෙනකොට අපි හැමදාම

we were telling them, "Would you please support the bill?"

ඒ අයගෙන් ඇහුවා කරුණාකරලා මේ කෙටුම්පතට සහයෝගය දෙනවද කියලා

And we don't have much technology like here,

අපිට මෙතැන තියෙනවා වගේ දියුණු තාක්ෂණයක් තිබුණෙ නෑ.

but we have our small phones.

අපිට තිබුණෙ අපේ පුංචි දුරකථන විතරයි.

So we said, "Why can't we get their numbers and text them?"

ඉතිං අපි කතාවුණා.. ඇයි අපි ඒ අයගෙ නොම්බර හොයාගෙන කෙටි පණිවුඩ යවන්නෙ නැත්තෙ කියලා.

So we did that. It was a good thing.

ඉතිං අපි ඒක කළා. ඒක හරිම ඵලදායී දෙයක්.

(Applause)

So when the bill passed, we texted them back,

ඉතිං කෙටුම්පත සම්මත වුනාම, අපි ඒ අයට පණිවුඩ යවලා කිව්වා

"Thank you for supporting the bill."

කෙටුම්පතට සහයෝගය දැක්වූවාට බොහෝම ස්තූතියි කියලා

(Laughter)

(සිනා)

And when the bill was signed by the president,

පසුව ජනාධිපතිතුමා විසින් කෙටුම්පතට අත්සන් කළා

making it into law, it was a plus.

එය නීතියක් බවට පත් කරමින්. ඒක ලොකු දෙයක්

Now, in Malawi, 18 is the legal marriage age, from 15 to 18.

දැන් මලාවිවල නීත්‍යානුකූලව විවාහ වීමේ වයස අවුරුදු 18යි.15-18 දක්වා

It's a good thing to know that the bill passed,

කෙටුම්පත සම්මත වුනා කියලා දැනගැනීම ලොකු දෙයක්

but let me tell you this:

ඒත් මම මේකත් කියන්න ඕනෑ

There are countries where 18 is the legal marriage age,

විවාහවීමේ නීත්‍යානුකූල වයස අවුරුදු 18 වන රටවල් තියෙනවා.

but don't we hear cries of women and girls every day?

ඒත් අපිට හැමදාම කාන්තාවන්ගේ දැරියන්ගේ වැළපීම් අහන්න තියෙනවා නේද?

Every day, girls' lives are being wasted away.

දිනපතා ම දැරියන්ගේ ජීවිත නාස්ති වෙලා යනවා

This is high time for leaders to honor their commitment.

නායකයන් සිය කැපවීම් වෙනුවෙන් පෙනී සිටීමට අවශ්‍යම කාලය මෙයයි.

In honoring this commitment,

මෙම කැපවීම් වෙනුවෙන් පෙනී සිටිම මගින්

it means keeping girls' issues at heart every time.

දැරියන් මුහුණුපාන ගැටලු ගැන අවධානයෙන් සිටින බව අදහස් වෙනවා.

We don't have to be subjected as second,

අනෙක් කාරණය අපිට තවදුරටත් ගැටලුවලට මුහුණ පෑමට සිදුවන්නේ නෑ

but they have to know that women, as we are in this room,

ඒත් ඔවුන් දැනගන්න ඕනෑ කාන්තාවන් මේ සභාවේ ඉන්න අපි වගේ අය

we are not just women, we are not just girls,

අපි නිකම්ම නිකං කාන්තාවන් නෙමෙයි නිකංම නිකං දැරියන් නෙමෙයි.

we are extraordinary.

අපි ඉතා ම සුවි ෙශ්ෂයි.

We can do more.

අපිට මීට වැඩි දෙයක් වුනත් කරන්න පුළුවන්

And another thing for Malawi,

මලාවි වෙනුවෙන් තවත් දේ කරන්න පුළුවන්.

and not just Malawi but other countries:

මලාවි වෙනුවෙන් විතරක් නෙමෙයි අනෙක් රටවල් වෙනුවෙනුත්

The laws which are there,

දැනට පවතින නීති සම්බන්ධයෙන්

you know how a law is not a law until it is enforced?

නීතියක් ක්‍රියාත්මක නොවන තුරු එය නීතියක් නොවන බව ඔබ දන්නවා

The law which has just recently passed

මෑතක දී සම්මත වූ නීතිය

and the laws that in other countries have been there,

ඒ වගේ ම අනෙක් රටවල පැවතුණු නීති

they need to be publicized at the local level,

ඒවා ප්‍රාදේශීය වශයෙන්

at the community level,

ප්‍රජා මට්ටමින් ප්‍රසිද්ධ වීම අවශ්‍යයයි.

where girls' issues are very striking.

මේ මට්ටම්වල දී තමයි දැරියන් මුහුණපාන ගැටලු වඩාත් දරුණු

Girls face issues, difficult issues, at the community level every day.

ප්‍රජා මට්ටමින් දිනපතාම දැරියන් ගැටලුවලට මුහුණපානවා ඉතා අසීරු ගැටලු

So if these young girls know that there are laws that protect them,

ඉතිං මේ කුඩා දැරියන් දන්නවා නම් ඔවුන්ව ආරක්ෂා කරන්න නීති ඇති බව

they will be able to stand up and defend themselves

ඔවුන්ට නැගී සිටින්න පුළුවන්

because they will know that there is a law that protects them.

මොකද ඔවුන් දන්නවා ඔවුන්ව ආරක්ෂා කරන්න නීති පවතින බව

And another thing I would say is that

මම කියන්න ඕනෑ තවත් දෙයක් තමයි

girls' voices and women's voices

දැරියන්ගේ හා කාන්තාවන්ගේ හඬ

are beautiful, they are there,

හරිම ලස්සනයි, ඔවුන් සිටිනවා

but we cannot do this alone.

එ්ත් අපිට මේක තනිවම කරන්න බැහැ

Male advocates, they have to jump in,

පිරිමි අයත් මේ වෙනුවෙන් ඉදිරිපත් විය යුතුයි.

to step in and work together.

එකට එක්වී කටයුතු කළ යුතුයි.

It's a collective work.

මේක සාමූහික ප්‍රයත්නයක්

What we need is what girls elsewhere need:

අපට අවශ්‍ය, ලොව පුරා සියලු දැරියන්ට අවශ්‍ය දේවල්මයි.

good education, and above all, not to marry whilst 11.

හොඳ අධ්‍යාපනයක්, ඒ සියල්ලට වැඩියෙන් අවුරුදු11දී කසාද නොබඳින්න

And furthermore,

තවදුරටත් කියන්න ඕනෑ

I know that together,

එකට එක්වෙලා අපිට පුළුවන්

we can transform the legal,

නෛතික, සංස්කෘතික හා

the cultural and political framework

දේශපාලනික රාමු වෙනස් කරන්න.

that denies girls of their rights.

දැරියන්ගේ අයිතිවාසිකම්වලට තහංචි පනවන,

I am standing here today

අද මම මෙතැන සිට ප්‍රකාශකරනවා

and declaring that we can end child marriage in a generation.

අපිට එක් පරම්පරාවකින් ළමා විවාහ අවසන් කරන්න පුළුවන්

This is the moment

මේ අවස්ථාවේ දී

where a girl and a girl, and millions of girls worldwide,

ඕනෑම දැරියකට, ලොව පුරා මිලියන ගාණක්වන ඕනෑම දැරියකට

will be able to say,

කියන්න පුළුවන් වේවි

"I will marry when I want."

මට ඕනෑ දවසකයි මම බඳින්නේ කියලා
