Eileen Piri.

Eileen is only 13 years old,

아일린은 겨우 13살입니다.

but when we were going through the collection of poetry that we wrote,

우리는 우리가 쓴 시 모음집을 넘겨 보던 중

I found her poem so interesting,

그녀의 시가 너무나 흥미롭고 동기유발이 된다고 생각했습니다.

so motivating.

So I'll read it to you.

여러분께 읽어 드리겠습니다.

She entitled her poem "I'll Marry When I Want."

시의 제목은 "제가 결혼하고 싶을 때, 결혼할게요."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

"I'll marry when I want.

"제가 결혼하고 싶을 때, 결혼할게요.

My mother can't force me to marry.

엄마는 저에게 결혼하라고 강요할 수 없어요.

My father cannot force me to marry.

아빠도 저에게 결혼하라고 강요할 수 없고요.

My uncle, my aunt,

삼촌, 이모,

my brother or sister,

오빠나 언니도

cannot force me to marry.

저한테 결혼하라고 강요할 수는 없는 거예요.

No one in the world

이 세상 그 누구도 저에게 결혼하라고 강요할 수 없어요.

can force me to marry.

I'll marry when I want.

제가 원할 때 결혼할래요.

Even if you beat me,

당신이 저를 때리더라도

even if you chase me away,

저를 쫓아버리더라도

even if you do anything bad to me,

그것보다 더 나쁜 일이 일어날지라도

I'll marry when I want.

제가 원할 때 결혼할래요.

I'll marry when I want,

제가 결혼하고 싶을 때 결혼할래요.

but not before I am well educated,

하지만 제가 교육이란 걸 받기 전까지는

and not before I am all grown up.

제가 다 자랄 때 까지는 결혼하지 않을래요.

I'll marry when I want."

This poem might seem odd,

아마 이 시가 이상해 보일지 모릅니다.

written by a 13-year-old girl,

이것이 13살 소녀가 쓴 시라니.

but where I and Eileen come from,

그러나 저와 아일린은 그러한 곳에서 태어났고

this poem, which I have just read to you,

방금 여러분께 읽어드린 이 시는 한 투사의 외침입니다.

is a warrior's cry.

I am from Malawi.

저는 말라위에서 왔습니다.

말라위는 가장 가난한 나라 중 하나죠.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries,

very poor,

너무나 가난합니다.

where gender equality is questionable.

양성 평등이라는 건 찾아보기 힘들죠.

Growing up in that country,

그런 나라에서 자라면서

I couldn't make my own choices in life.

제 스스로 제 삶의 선택을 할 수 없었습니다.

I couldn't even explore

심지어 삶의 개인적인 기회를 경험해볼 수도 없었습니다.

personal opportunities in life.

I will tell you a story

여러분께 각기 다른 두 소녀에 관한 이야기를 들려드리겠습니다.

of two different girls,

two beautiful girls.

두 명의 아름다운 소녀들입니다.

These girls grew up

이 소녀들은 한 지붕 아래 자랐습니다.

under the same roof.

They were eating the same food.

그들은 같은 음식을 먹었고

Sometimes, they would share clothes,

때때로 옷을 나눠 입기도 했고

and even shoes.

신발을 같이 신기도 했습니다.

But their lives ended up differently,

하지만 그 둘의 끝은 판이하게 달랐습니다.

in two different paths.

두 가지 다른 길을 걸었죠.

The other girl is my little sister.

그 중 한 소녀는 바로 제 여동생입니다.

My little sister was only 11 years old

제 여동생은 고작 11살이었때

when she got pregnant.

처음으로 임신을 했습니다.

It's a hurtful thing.

정말 가슴 아픈 일입니다.

Not only did it hurt her, even me.

그녀만이 상처받은게 아니라 저 또한 상처입었죠.

I was going through a hard time as well.

저도 그에 버금가는 힘겨운 시간을 견뎌내야만 했습니다.

As it is in my culture,

저희 풍습에 따르면

once you reach puberty stage,

일단 당신이 사춘기에 접어들면

you are supposed to go to initiation camps.

입문 캠프에 들어가야 합니다.

In these initiation camps,

이 입문 캠프에서

you are taught how to sexually please a man.

어떻게 성적으로 남자를 기쁘게 하는지를 가르쳐 줍니다.

There is this special day,

이것을 특정한 날에 하는데

which they call "Very Special Day"

그들은 그 날을 "매우 특별한 날"이라고 부릅니다.

where a man who is hired by the community

지역 사회에서 고용된 남자가

comes to the camp

캠프에 도착하고

and sleeps with the little girls.

어린 소녀들과 잠자리에 듭니다.

Imagine the trauma that these young girls

이러한 일을 매일 겪는 어린 소녀들의 충격을 상상해보세요.

go through every day.

Most girls end up pregnant.

대부분의 소녀들은 결국 임신합니다.

They even contract HIV and AIDS

심지어 에이즈 바이러스에 감염되고,

and other sexually transmitted diseases.

성적으로 전염되는 다른 질병에 노출되기도 합니다.

For my little sister, she ended up being pregnant.

제 여동생같은 경우에는 임신하게 되었습니다.

Today, she's only 16 years old

그녀는 지금 현재 16살입니다.

and she has three children.

그런데 세 명의 아이가 있습니다.

Her first marriage did not survive,

그녀의 첫번째 결혼은 잘 되지 않았고

nor did her second marriage.

두번째 결혼 또한 마찬가지였습니다.

On the other side, there is this girl.

반면 여기에 다른 한 소녀가 있습니다.

She's amazing.

그녀는 굉장하죠.

(Laughter)

I call her amazing because she is.

저는 그녀가 정말로 굉장하기에 굉장하다고 부릅니다.

She's very fabulous.

그녀는 정말로 끝내주죠.

That girl is me. (Laughter)

그 소녀는 바로 접니다. (웃음)

When I was 13 years old,

제가 13살이었을 때,

I was told, you are grown up,

너는 이제 다 컸으니,

you have now reached of age,

이제 입문 캠프에 가야 되는 나이가 됐다고 했습니다.

you're supposed to go to the initiation camp.

I was like, "What?

그래서 저는 "뭐라고요?

I'm not going to go to the initiation camps."

저는 입문 캠프에 가지 않을거예요." 라고 했죠.

You know what the women said to me?

그러자 여자들이 저한테 뭐라고 했는지 아세요?

"You are a stupid girl. Stubborn.

"넌 진짜 멍청한 애다. 완전 고집쟁이야.

You do not respect the traditions of our society, of our community."

너는 우리 사회, 우리 지역 사회의 전통을 존중하지 않는 거다."

I said no because I knew where I was going.

저는 제 삶의 방향을 알았기에 거절했습니다.

I knew what I wanted in life.

전 제가 어떤 삶을 원하는지 알았거든요.

I had a lot of dreams as a young girl.

저는 어린 소녀로서 많은 꿈을 가지고 있었습니다.

I wanted to get well educated,

미래에 괜찮은 직장을 얻기 위해 정말 잘 교육받고 싶었습니다.

to find a decent job in the future.

I was imagining myself as a lawyer,

커다란 의자에 앉아 있는 변호사가 되는 상상을 했어요.

seated on that big chair.

Those were the imaginations that

그러한 상상들이 매일 제 머리속에 가득했죠.

were going through my mind every day.

And I knew that one day,

그러던 어느 날 저는 깨달았습니다.

I would contribute something, a little something to my community.

제 지역사회를 위해 아주 작지만 어떤 기여를 할 수 있을지도 모르겠다고요.

But every day after refusing,

그러나 입문 캠프 입성을 거절한 후로부터 매일매일

women would tell me,

여자들이 저에게 말했습니다.

"Look at you, you're all grown up. Your little sister has a baby.

"너를 보렴, 넌 이미 다 자랐어. 너의 여동생도 아기를 가지지 않았니.

What about you?"

너도 그래야 하지 않겠니?"

That was the music that I was hearing every day,

그게 바로 제가 매일 귀에 박히도록 들은 말이자

and that is the music that girls hear every day

그 지역의 어린 소녀들이 매일 듣는 말이였습니다.

when they don't do something that the community needs them to do.

지역 사회에서 요구하는 일을 하지 않을 때 그렇게 계속 얘기합니다.

When I compared the two stories between me and my sister,

저와 제 여동생 사이의 두 가지 이야기를 비교했을 때,

I said, "Why can't I do something?

저는 말했습니다, "왜 뭔가 할수 없는거지?"

Why can't I change something that has happened for a long time

왜 오랫 동안 우리 지역 사회에서 일어난 일을 바꾸기 위한

in our community?"

어떠한 것을 해 볼 수 없는거지?"

That was when I called other girls

바로 그 때였습니다.

just like my sister, who have children,

저는 제 여동생처럼 아이를 가진 소녀들을 불렀습니다.

who have been in class but they have forgotten how to read and write.

그들은 수업을 받았지만 글을 읽고 쓰는 법을 잊어버린 상태였죠.

I said, "Come on, we can remind each other

"여기로 오렴, 우리가 서로에게

how to read and write again,

어떻게 읽고 쓰는지에 대해 다시 한 번 알려줄 수 있어,

how to hold the pen, how to read, to hold the book."

어떻게 펜을 잡고, 어떻게 책을 잡고 읽는지를 말야."

It was a great time I had with them.

그들과 함께 한 시간은 너무나 좋았습니다.

Nor did I just learn a little about them,

저는 그들에 대해 알았을 뿐만이 아니라

but they were able to tell me their personal stories,

그들 또한 저에게 그들의 개인적인 이야기를 해주었습니다.

what they were facing every day

어린 엄마인 그들이 직면한 매일 매일이 어떠한지를 말예요.

as young mothers.

That was when I was like,

그 순간 저는

'Why can't we take all these things that are happening to us

"우리에게 일어난 이 모든 일들을

and present them and tell our mothers, our traditional leaders,

그들에게 소개하고, 우리의 어머니들과 전통 지도자들에게

that these are the wrong things?"

이러한 것들이 잘못된 것이라고 말하면 어떨까?"라고 생각했습니다.

It was a scary thing to do,

그것은 실행하기에는 너무나 두려운 것이었습니다.

because these traditional leaders,

왜냐하면 이러한 전통적인 지도자들은

they are already accustomed to the things

이미 이러한 관습에 오랫동안 익숙해져 있는 상태이기 때문입니다.

that have been there for ages.

A hard thing to change,

그치만 바꾸기 어려운 일은 해볼 만한 가치가 있는 일입니다.

but a good thing to try.

So we tried.

그래서 우리는 시도했습니다.

It was very hard, but we pushed.

정말 너무나 힘들었지만 우리는 계속 밀고 나갔죠.

And I'm here to say that in my community,

그리고 저는 제 지역 사회에서의 일을 말하기 위해 이 자리에 섰습니다.

it was the first community after girls

그것은 소녀들이 전통적인 지도자들에게

pushed so hard to our traditional leader,

자신들의 신념을 굽히지 않고 관철한 첫번째 지역 사회였습니다.

and our leader stood up for us and said no girl has to be married

마을의 지도자는 우리를 지지해줬고

before the age of 18.

18살 미만 소녀의 결혼이 금지되었습니다.

In my community,

제 지역 사회에서 그건 처음있는 일이었고

that was the first time a community,

they had to call the bylaws,

그들은 준칙을 제정했으며,

the first bylaw that protected girls

우리 지역 사회에서 처음으로 소녀들을 보호하는 법이였습니다.

in our community.

We did not stop there.

우리는 거기에서 멈추지 않고 앞으로 나아갔습니다.

We forged ahead.

We were determined to fight for girls not just in my community,

우리는 우리 지역 사회의 소녀들을 위해서만이 아니라

but even in other communities.

다른 지역 사회의 소녀들을 위해서도 싸우기로 결심했습니다.

When the child marriage bill was being presented in February,

2월에 아동 결혼 법안이 국회의사당에 청원되었고

we were there at the Parliament house.

우리는 그 자리에 있었습니다.

Every day, when the members of Parliament were entering,

매일 국회의사당의 의원들이 들어갈 때 마다

we were telling them, "Would you please support the bill?"

우리는 그들에게 말했습니다. "제발 그 법안을 지지해주시겠습니까?"

And we don't have much technology like here,

우리는 미국처럼 최첨단 기기를 가지고 있지는 않았습니다.

but we have our small phones.

그치만 우리에겐 작은 전화기가 있었죠.

So we said, "Why can't we get their numbers and text them?"

"그들의 전화번호를 얻어 문자 메세지를 보내면 어떨까?"라고 생각했습니다.

So we did that. It was a good thing.

우리는 실제로 메세지를 보냈는데 괜찮은 시도였습니다.

So when the bill passed, we texted them back,

그 법안이 통과되자 그들에게 다시 메세지를 보냈습니다.

"Thank you for supporting the bill."

"법안을 지지해주셔서 감사합니다."

(Laughter)

And when the bill was signed by the president,

그리고 대통령이 그 법안에 서명했을 때,

making it into law, it was a plus.

그것은 법적으로 효력을 발생하게 되었습니다. 그리고 한가지 더.

Now, in Malawi, 18 is the legal marriage age, from 15 to 18.

이제 말라위에서, 18살이 법적으로 결혼가능한 나이가 되었습니다.

It's a good thing to know that the bill passed,

but let me tell you this:

There are countries where 18 is the legal marriage age,

18살이 되어야 법적으로 결혼이 가능한 나라들이 있습니다.

but don't we hear cries of women and girls every day?

그럼에도 불구하고 여성들과 소녀들의 울음 소리가 들리지 않나요?

Every day, girls' lives are being wasted away.

매일 소녀들의 생명이 쇠약해져만 가고 있습니다.

This is high time for leaders to honor their commitment.

지금이야말로 지도자들이 그들의 약속을 지켜야할 때입니다.

In honoring this commitment,

약속을 지킨다는 건

it means keeping girls' issues at heart every time.

이러한 소녀들의 문제를 계속해서 그들의 가슴에 품고 있어야 한다는 의미입니다.

We don't have to be subjected as second,

우리는 두번째가 될 필요가 없습니다.

but they have to know that women, as we are in this room,

하지만 그들은 그 여성들을 이 방안에 있는 우리와 같이 알아야만 합니다.

we are not just women, we are not just girls,

우리는 그저그런 한 명의 여성이 아니며 그저그런 한 명의 소녀도 아닙니다.

we are extraordinary.

우리 모두는 특별합니다.

We can do more.

우리는 더 낳은 세상을 만들 수 있습니다.

And another thing for Malawi,

그리고 또 다른 말라위를 위한 일,

and not just Malawi but other countries:

말라위 뿐만이 아니라 다른 나라를 위한 것이기도 한 이것은

The laws which are there,

그곳에 있는 법들은

you know how a law is not a law until it is enforced?

여러분도 아시다시피 법률이 시행될 때까지 법은 법이 아닙니다.

The law which has just recently passed

얼마전에 통과된 그 법안과

and the laws that in other countries have been there,

다른 나라에서는 이미 존재했던 법안은

they need to be publicized at the local level,

일반인들이 이해할 수 있는 수준에서 발행되어져야 할 필요가 있습니다.

at the community level,

지역 사회 수준에서 말이죠.

where girls' issues are very striking.

소녀들의 문제들은 매우 충격적이니까요.

Girls face issues, difficult issues, at the community level every day.

소녀들은 매일 지역 사회에서 어려운 문제에 직면합니다.

So if these young girls know that there are laws that protect them,

그러므로 이러한 어린 소녀들이 그들을 보호하는 법이 존재하는 것을 안다면

they will be able to stand up and defend themselves

그들 스스로 방어할 수 있을 겁니다.

because they will know that there is a law that protects them.

왜냐하면 그들을 보호하는 법이 있다는 것을 알기 때문입니다.

And another thing I would say is that

또 하나 제가 말하고 싶은 점은

girls' voices and women's voices

소녀들과 여성의 목소리들은

are beautiful, they are there,

아름답다는 겁니다.

but we cannot do this alone.

그러나 이 일은 우리들 힘만으로 되는 일이 아닙니다.

Male advocates, they have to jump in,

남성 지지자들도 참여해야 하고 돕고 나서서 함께 해야만 합니다.

to step in and work together.

It's a collective work.

이것은 공동의 일입니다.

What we need is what girls elsewhere need:

우리가 필요한 것이 바로 다른 곳에 있는 소녀들이 필요한 것입니다.

good education, and above all, not to marry whilst 11.

좋은 교육 그리고 무엇보다도 11살에 결혼하지 않는 것.

And furthermore,

그리고 또한

I know that together,

모두가 힘을 합치면

we can transform the legal,

우리는 소녀들의 권리를 부인하는

the cultural and political framework

법적, 문화적, 정치적 뼈대를

that denies girls of their rights.

개혁할 수 있습니다.

I am standing here today

저는 오늘 날 이 자리에 서서

and declaring that we can end child marriage in a generation.

한 세대의 아동 결혼의 끝을 선언하려 합니다.

This is the moment

지금 이 바로 그 순간입니다.

where a girl and a girl, and millions of girls worldwide,

소녀 한명 한명 그렇게 전세계의 수백만명의 소녀들은

will be able to say,

말할 수 있게 될 것입니다.

"I will marry when I want."

"제가 원할 때 결혼할래요."
