written by my friend from Malawi,

با نام ايلين پيرى شروع

Eileen Piri.

مى‌كنم.

Eileen is only 13 years old,

ايلين فقط ١٣ سال دارد،

but when we were going through the collection of poetry that we wrote,

I found her poem so interesting,

So I'll read it to you.

"I'll marry when I want.

My mother can't force me to marry.

مادرم نمی‌تواند مرا وادار به ازدواج کند.

My father cannot force me to marry.

پدرم نمی‌تواند مرا به ازدواج وادار کند.

My uncle, my aunt,

عمویم، عمه‌ام،

my brother or sister,

برادر یا خواهرم،

cannot force me to marry.

No one in the world

can force me to marry.

I'll marry when I want.

Even if you beat me,

even if you chase me away,

even if you do anything bad to me,

This poem might seem odd,

written by a 13-year-old girl,

but where I and Eileen come from,

this poem, which I have just read to you,

این شعری که برایتان خواندم،

is a warrior's cry.

I am from Malawi.

اهل مالاوی هستم.

Malawi is one of the poorest countries,

مالاوی یکی از فقیرترین کشورهاست،

very poor,

خیلی فقیر،

where gender equality is questionable.

جاییکه برابری جنسی جای سوال دارد.

Growing up in that country,

موقع بزرگ شدن در آن کشور،

I couldn't make my own choices in life.

نتوانستم انتخابهای خودم را برای زندگیم داشته باشم.

I couldn't even explore

حتی قادر به بررسى

personal opportunities in life.

فرصتهاى فردى در زندگى نبودم.

I will tell you a story

برايتان داستانى را خواهم گفت

of two different girls,

از دو دختر متفاوت.

two beautiful girls.

دو دختر زيبا.

These girls grew up

اين دخترها زير يك

under the same roof.

سقف بزرگ شدند.

They were eating the same food.

يك غذا ميخوردند.

Sometimes, they would share clothes,

گاهى، لباسهاى هم را ميپوشيدند.

and even shoes.

و حتى كفشها.

But their lives ended up differently,

in two different paths.

دو راه متفاوت.

The other girl is my little sister.

دختر ديگر خواهر كوچك من است.

My little sister was only 11 years old

خواهر كوچولوم فقط ١١ سالش بود.

when she got pregnant.

It's a hurtful thing.

واقعا دردناكه.

Not only did it hurt her, even me.

نه تنها دردناك براى او، بلكه حتى براى من.

I was going through a hard time as well.

من هم روزهاى سختى را گذراندم.

As it is in my culture,

once you reach puberty stage,

you are supposed to go to initiation camps.

In these initiation camps,

you are taught how to sexually please a man.

There is this special day,

which they call "Very Special Day"

where a man who is hired by the community

comes to the camp

and sleeps with the little girls.

Imagine the trauma that these young girls

go through every day.

Most girls end up pregnant.

They even contract HIV and AIDS

and other sexually transmitted diseases.

For my little sister, she ended up being pregnant.

عاقبت خواهر کوچولوم، حاملگی بود.

Today, she's only 16 years old

الان فقط ۱۶ سال دارد

and she has three children.

و سه فرزند داره،

Her first marriage did not survive,

ازدواج اولش ناموفق بود

nor did her second marriage.

و همینطور ازدواج دومش.

On the other side, there is this girl.

از طرف دیگر، این دختر هست،

She's amazing.

فوق العاده است.

(Laughter)

I call her amazing because she is.

She's very fabulous.

That girl is me. (Laughter)

When I was 13 years old,

I was told, you are grown up,

you have now reached of age,

you're supposed to go to the initiation camp.

I was like, "What?

I'm not going to go to the initiation camps."

You know what the women said to me?

می‌دانید زنها بهم چی گفتند؟

"You are a stupid girl. Stubborn.

«کله‌شق. تو دختر کودنی هستی.

You do not respect the traditions of our society, of our community."

به سنتهای جامعه‌مون احترام نمیذاری.»

I said no because I knew where I was going.

نه گفتم چون می‌دانستم کجا قرار بود برم.

I knew what I wanted in life.

می‌دانستم در زندگی چه می‌خواهم.

I had a lot of dreams as a young girl.

بعنوان یک دختر کم سن کلی رویا داشتم.

I wanted to get well educated,

میخواستم خوب تحصیل کنم،

to find a decent job in the future.

شغل مناسبی در آینده پیدا کنم.

I was imagining myself as a lawyer,

خودم را بعنوان وکیلی تصور می‌ کردم،

seated on that big chair.

که بر صندلی بزرگی نشسته.

Those were the imaginations that

آنها تصوراتی بود که

were going through my mind every day.

هر روز در سرم می‌گذشت.

And I knew that one day,

I would contribute something, a little something to my community.

But every day after refusing,

women would tell me,

That was the music that I was hearing every day,

and that is the music that girls hear every day

when they don't do something that the community needs them to do.

When I compared the two stories between me and my sister,

I said, "Why can't I do something?

Why can't I change something that has happened for a long time

in our community?"

That was when I called other girls

just like my sister, who have children,

who have been in class but they have forgotten how to read and write.

I said, "Come on, we can remind each other

It was a great time I had with them.

Nor did I just learn a little about them,

نه فقط من کمی درباره آنها یاد گرفتم،

but they were able to tell me their personal stories,

بلکه قادر بودند برایم داستانهای شخصی‎شان را بگویند،

what they were facing every day

آنچه هر روزه بعنوان مادران جوان

as young mothers.

با آن روبرو می‎شدند.

That was when I was like,

آنوقت بود که حس کردم

'Why can't we take all these things that are happening to us

«چرا ما نمی‎توانیم همه این اتفاقاتی را که برایمان در حال افتادن است

and present them and tell our mothers, our traditional leaders,

that these are the wrong things?"

It was a scary thing to do,

because these traditional leaders,

they are already accustomed to the things

A hard thing to change,

So we tried.

And I'm here to say that in my community,

it was the first community after girls

pushed so hard to our traditional leader,

and our leader stood up for us and said no girl has to be married

before the age of 18.

قبل از ۱۸ سالگی ازدواج کند.

In my community,

در جامعه من،

that was the first time a community,

که برای نخستین بار درآن جامعه اتفاق میفتاد،

they had to call the bylaws,

مجبور به وضع مقررات محلی شدند،

the first bylaw that protected girls

نخستین مقررات محلی که در جامعه ما

in our community.

از دخترها حمایت می‎کرد.

We did not stop there.

در آنجا متوقف نشدیم.

We forged ahead.

پیشروی کردیم.

We were determined to fight for girls not just in my community,

مصمم بودیم به مبارزه برای دختران نه فقط در جامعه خودمان،

but even in other communities.

بلکه حتی در سایر جوامع.

When the child marriage bill was being presented in February,

وقتی لایحه ازدواج کودک در فوریه داشت ارائه میشد،

we were there at the Parliament house.

ما در پارلمان حضور د اشتیم.

Every day, when the members of Parliament were entering,

هرروز، وقتی اعضای پارلمان وارد مجلس می‎شدند

we were telling them, "Would you please support the bill?"

به آنها می‎گفتیم، «ممکن است لطفا از لایحه حمایت کنید؟»

And we don't have much technology like here,

و خیلی مثل اینجا صاحب تکنولوژی نیستیم،

but we have our small phones.

ولی خب تلفنهای کوچکمان را داریم.

So we said, "Why can't we get their numbers and text them?"

پس گفتیم،«چرا شماره‎شان را بدست نیاریم و براشون پیغام نفرستیم؟»

So we did that. It was a good thing.

پس این کار را کردیم. حرکت خوبی بود.

So when the bill passed, we texted them back,

پس وقتی قانون تصویب شد، دوباره برایشان پیغام دادیم،

"Thank you for supporting the bill."

«از پشتیبانی شما از لایحه متشکریم.»

And when the bill was signed by the president,

و وقتی لایحه از سوی رییس جمهور امضا شد،

making it into law, it was a plus.

و تبدیل به قانون شد، دو فوریتی شد.

Now, in Malawi, 18 is the legal marriage age, from 15 to 18.

اکنون در مالاوی، ۱۸ سالگی سن قانونی ازدواج است، از ۱۵ تا ۱۸.

It's a good thing to know that the bill passed,

but let me tell you this:

There are countries where 18 is the legal marriage age,

but don't we hear cries of women and girls every day?

Every day, girls' lives are being wasted away.

This is high time for leaders to honor their commitment.

وقت آن رسیده که رهبران تعهدات خود را ارج نهند.

In honoring this commitment,

با ارج نهادن به تعهدات خویش،

it means keeping girls' issues at heart every time.

یعنی مسائل دختران را کانون توجه قرار دهند.

We don't have to be subjected as second,

ما نباید بعنوان جنس دوم مطرح شویم،

but they have to know that women, as we are in this room,

بلکه باید بدانیم بعنوان زنانی که در این سالن حضور داریم،

we are not just women, we are not just girls,

ما فقط زن نیستیم، فقط دختر نیستیم،

we are extraordinary.

ما خارق‎العاده‎ایم.

We can do more.

ازپس بیشتر از این برمیاییم.

And another thing for Malawi,

و نکته دیگر درباره مالاوی،

and not just Malawi but other countries:

و نه فقط مالاوی و سایر کشورها:

The laws which are there,

قوانین موجود در آنجاست،

you know how a law is not a law until it is enforced?

می‎دانید که قانون تا زمانی که اجرا نشود، قانون نیست.

The law which has just recently passed

قانونی که اخیرا تصویب شده

and the laws that in other countries have been there,

و قوانینی که در سایر کشورها هست،

they need to be publicized at the local level,

باید در سطح بومی عمومی گردد،

at the community level,

در سطح قبایل،

where girls' issues are very striking.

جاییکه مشکلات دخترها بسیار شدید است.

Girls face issues, difficult issues, at the community level every day.

دخترها با مشکلات مواجه می‎شوند، مشکلات دشوار، در سطح جامعه و بطور روزمره.

So if these young girls know that there are laws that protect them,

پس اگر دختران جوان بدانند که قوانینی در حمایت از آنها هست،

they will be able to stand up and defend themselves

قادر به ایستادگی و دفاع از خود خواهند بود،

because they will know that there is a law that protects them.

چون می‎دانند قانونی هست که از آنها حمایت کند.

And another thing I would say is that

چیزی دیگری که بایداضافه کنم این است که

girls' voices and women's voices

صدای دختران و صدای زنها

are beautiful, they are there,

زیباست، آنها آنجا هستند،

but we cannot do this alone.

اما تنها از پس آن برنمیایم.

Male advocates, they have to jump in,

مردان طرفدارهم باید وارد گود شوند،

to step in and work together.

و با ما همکاری کنند.

It's a collective work.

کاری جمعی است.

What we need is what girls elsewhere need:

آنچه نیز داریم چیزی است که دختران جاهای دیگر به آن نیاز دارند:

good education, and above all, not to marry whilst 11.

تحصیلات خوب، و از همه مهمتر ازدواج نکردن در سن 11 سالگی است.

And furthermore,

و علاوه بر آن،

I know that together,

می‎دانم که باهم

we can transform the legal,

قادر به تغییر چارچوب سیاسی،

the cultural and political framework

فرهنگی و حقوقی هستیم که

that denies girls of their rights.

حقوق دختران را منکر می‎شود.

I am standing here today

and declaring that we can end child marriage in a generation.

This is the moment

where a girl and a girl, and millions of girls worldwide,

will be able to say,
