A few years ago, my eyes were opened

to the dark side of the construction industry.

In 2006, young Qatari students

took me to go and see the migrant worker camps.

And since then I've followed the unfolding issue of worker rights.

In the last six months, more than 300 skyscrapers

in the UAE have been put on hold or canceled.

Behind the headlines that lay behind these buildings

ဒီအဆောက်အအုံတွေ ဆိုင်ရာ ခေါင်းစဉ်သတင်းရဲ့နောက်ကွယ်မှာကတော့

is the fate of the often-indentured construction worker.

အလုပ်သင် ဆောက်လုပ်ရေးအလုပ်သမားတွေရဲ့ ကံကြမ္မာ ရှိနေခဲ့ပါတယ်

1.1 million of them.

Mainly Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan

and Nepalese, these laborers risk everything

to make money for their families back home.

They pay a middle-man thousands of dollars to be there.

And when they arrive, they find themselves in labor camps with no water,

no air conditioning, and their passports taken away.

While it's easy to point the finger at local officials and higher authorities,

99 percent of these people are hired by the private sector,

and so therefore we're equally, if not more, accountable.

Groups like Buildsafe UAE have emerged,

but the numbers are simply overwhelming.

In August 2008,

၂၀၀၈ ဩဂုတ်လက

UAE public officials noted

ယူအေအီး အစိုးရအရာရှိတွေ မှတ်တမ်းတင်ခဲ့ကြတာက

that 40 percent of the country's 1,098 labor camps

နိုင်ငံအတွင်းက ၁၀၉၈ ခုသော အလုပ်သမားစခန်းတွေရဲ့ ၄၀ ရာနှုန်းဟာ

had violated minimum health and fire safety regulations.

အနည်းဆုံး ရှိသင့်တဲ့ ကျန်းမာရေးနဲ့ မီးဘေးဆိုင်ရာ စည်းမျဉ်းတွေကို ချိုးဖောက်ထားတယ်လို့ပါ

And last summer, more than 10,000 workers

ပြီးခဲ့တဲ့ နွေမှာ အလုပ်သမား တစ်သောင်းကျော်က

protested for the non-payment of wages,

လစာ ထုတ်မပေးမှု အစားအသောက် အရည်အသွေး ညံ့ဖျင်းမှု

for the poor quality of food, and inadequate housing.

နေစရာအိမ် မဆီလျော်မှုတွေကို ဆန္ဒပြခဲ့ကြပါတယ်

And then the financial collapse happened.

အဲဒီ့နောက် ဘဏ္ဍာရေး ပြိုလဲမှုကြီး ပေါ်ပေါက်လာပါတယ်

When the contractors have gone bust,

ကန်ထရိုက်သမားတွေလည်း စီးပွားပျက်ရော

as they've been overleveraged like everyone else,

သူတို့ကလည်း အများနည်းတူ လုပ်ငန်းကို အဆမတန် ငွေချေးယူ လုပ်နေခဲ့ကြတာပါ

the difference is everything goes missing,

အဲဒီတော့ နောက်ဆုံး ကြုံရတာက အကုန်ပျောက်ဆုံးသွားပါပြီ

documentation, passports,

စာတမ်းစာရွက်တွေ ပတ်စ်ပို့စ်တွေ

and tickets home for these workers.

ဒီအလုပ်သမားတွေ အိမ်ပြန်စရာ လက်မှတ်တွေရောပေါ့

Currently, right now, thousands of workers are abandoned.

လက်ရှိမှာတော့ အလုပ်သမား ထောင်ချီတို့ဟာ စွန့်ပစ်ခံထားရပါတယ်

There is no way back home.

အိမ်ပြန်စရာ နည်းလမ်း မရှိပါဘူး

And there is no way, and no proof of arrival.

ပြီးတော့ ဒီနိုင်ငံကို ဘယ်လိုရောက်ကြောင်း ဘာအထောက်အထားမှလည်း မရှိပါဘူး

These are the boom-and-bust refugees.

The question is, as a building professional,

ဆောက်လုပ်ရေး ပညာရှင်တစ်ဦး ဗိသုကာ ပညာရှင်တစ်ဦး

as an architect, an engineer, as a developer,

အင်ဂျင်နီယာတစ်ဦး ဖွံ့ဖြိုးရေးကို ဆောင်ရွက်သူ တစ်ဦးအနေနဲ့ မေးချင်တာက

if you know this is going on,

အပတ်တိုင်း ဆောက်လုပ်ရေး လုပ်ငန်းခွင်တွေကို သွားနေတယ်ပဲဆိုတော့

as we go to the sights every single week,

ဒီလိုဖြစ်ပျက်နေတာတွေကို ခင်ဗျားတို့သိရင်

are you complacent or complicit

သိရက်နဲ့ လျစ်လျူရှုထားမှာလား ဒါမှမဟုတ် ကြံရာပါ ဖြစ်ချင်သလား ဆိုတဲ့မေးခွန်းပါပဲ

in the human rights violations?

အဲဒါက လူ့ရပိုင်ခွင့်များ ချိုးဖောက်ခံရမှုပဲ မဟုတ်ပါလား?

So let's forget your environmental footprint.

ခင်ဗျားရဲ့ပတ်ဝန်းကျင်ဆိုင်ရာ ခြေရာကို မေ့ပစ်လိုက်ကြရအောင်

Let's think about your ethical footprint.

လူ့ကျင့်ဝတ် ကိစ္စကိုပဲ စဉ်းစားကြည့်ရအောင်နော်

What good is it

ကာဗွန်ထုတ်လုပ်မှုမဲ့ စွမ်းအင်ကို အထိရောက်ဆုံးသုံးနိုင်တဲ့ အဆောက်အအုံကြီးတွေဖြစ်တဲ့

to build a zero-carbon, energy efficient complex,

ဒီလို ဗိသုကာ ရတနာလက်ရာကို ထုတ်လုပ်ပေးလိုက်တဲ့

when the labor producing this architectural gem

လုပ်အားကျတော့ လူကျင့်ဝတ်နဲ့ မကိုက်ညီဘူးဆိုရင်

is unethical at best?

ဘာများ အကျိုးကျေးဇူးရှိမှာလဲခင်ဗျာ

Now, recently I've been told I've been taking the high road.

မကြာခင်တုန်းကပဲ ကျွန်တော် ရွေးလိုက်တဲ့ လမ်းက သိပ်မြင့်နေတယ်လို့ ကျွန်တော့်ကို ပြောကြပါတယ်

But, quite frankly, on this issue,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ပွင့်ပွင့်လင်းလင်းပြောရရင် ဒီပြဿနာမှာ

there is no other road.

ဒီ့အပြင် ရွေးစရာ လမ်းရယ်လို့ မရှိနိုင်ပါဘူး

So let's not forget who is really paying the price of this financial collapse.

ဒီတော့ ဘဏ္ဍာရေး ပြိုလဲမှုကြီးရဲ့ဒဏ် အတွက် တကယ် ပေးဆပ်လိုက်ရတာ ဘယ်သူတွေလဲဆိုတာ မေ့မထားလိုက်ကြပါနဲ့

And that as we worry about our next job in the office,

ကျွန်တော်တို့တွေရုံးမှာ နောက်အလုပ် နောက်ရလာမယ့် ဒီဇိုင်းတစ်ခုအတွက်

the next design that we can get, to keep our workers.

ကိုယ့်အလုပ်သမားတွေကို ဆက်အလုပ်ပေးဖို့အတွက် စိတ်ပူကြသလိုမျိုး

Let's not forget these men, who are truly dying to work.
