A few years ago, my eyes were opened

In 2006, young Qatari students

took me to go and see the migrant worker camps.

And since then I've followed the unfolding issue of worker rights.

আর তারপর থেকে আমি শ্রমিক অধিকারের প্রকাশিত বিষয়গুলোর দিকে নজর দিয়েছি।

In the last six months, more than 300 skyscrapers

গত ছয় মাসে, সংযুক্ত আরব আমিরাতে ৩০০ এর বেশী গগনচুম্বি অট্টালিকার

in the UAE have been put on hold or canceled.

Behind the headlines that lay behind these buildings

এই সব অট্টালিকার শিরণামের আড়ালে ঢাকা পড়ে

is the fate of the often-indentured construction worker.

প্রায়ই ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ হওয়া নির্মাণ শ্রমিকদের ভাগ্য।

1.1 million of them.

Mainly Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan

মূলত ভারতীয়, পাকিস্তানি, শ্রিলংকান,

and Nepalese, these laborers risk everything

এবং নেপালি, এইসব শ্রমিকেরা সবকিছুর ঝুঁকি নিয়ে

to make money for their families back home.

দেশে তাদের পরিবারের জন্য পয়সা রোজগার করে।

They pay a middle-man thousands of dollars to be there.

তারা ওই দেশে যাওয়ার জন্য একজন দালালকে হাজার হাজার ডলার দেয়।

And when they arrive, they find themselves in labor camps with no water,

আর যখন তারা পৌঁছায়, তারা নিজেদেরকে লেবার ক্যাম্পে আবিষ্কার করে যেখানে কোন পানি নাই,

no air conditioning, and their passports taken away.

While it's easy to point the finger at local officials and higher authorities,

99 percent of these people are hired by the private sector,

and so therefore we're equally, if not more, accountable.

Groups like Buildsafe UAE have emerged,

বিল্ডসেফ ইউ.এ.ই এর মত সংগঠনগুলো তৈরি হয়েছে।

but the numbers are simply overwhelming.

কিন্তু এই সংখ্যাগুলো আসলেই অবাক করার মত।

In August 2008,

আগস্ট ২০০৮ এ,

UAE public officials noted

সংযুক্ত আরব আমিরাতের অফিশিয়ালরা বলেন

that 40 percent of the country's 1,098 labor camps

দেশের ১,০৯৮ টি লেবার ক্যাম্পের ৪০ শতাংশ

had violated minimum health and fire safety regulations.

And last summer, more than 10,000 workers

আর গত গৃষ্মে, ১০,০০০ এরও বেশি শ্রমিক

protested for the non-payment of wages,

for the poor quality of food, and inadequate housing.

খাবারের জঘন্য মান, আর অপ্রতুল বাসস্থানের জন্য।

And then the financial collapse happened.

আর তখনই অর্থনৈতিক পতন ঘটল।

When the contractors have gone bust,

ঠিকাদারেরা যখন সর্বস্বান্ত হয়েছে,

as they've been overleveraged like everyone else,

যেমন তারা আর সবার মত বাড়তি সুবিধা ভোগ করেছে,

the difference is everything goes missing,

কিন্তু পার্থক্যটা হোল ওই শ্রমিকগুলোর সবকিছু হারিয়ে যায়,

documentation, passports,

কাগজপত্র, পাসপোর্ট,

and tickets home for these workers.

দেশে ফেরার টিকেট, সব।

Currently, right now, thousands of workers are abandoned.

বর্তমানে, এই মুহূর্তে, হাজার হাজার শ্রমিককে কাজ থেকে তাড়িয়ে দেয়া হয়েছে।

There is no way back home.

দেশে ফেরার কোন উপায় নাই।

And there is no way, and no proof of arrival.

These are the boom-and-bust refugees.

The question is, as a building professional,

as an architect, an engineer, as a developer,

if you know this is going on,

What good is it

এর মধ্যে কী এমন মাহাত্য আছে

to build a zero-carbon, energy efficient complex,

যে আমরা জিরো-কার্বন, জ্বালানী সচেতন ইমারত বানাচ্ছি,

when the labor producing this architectural gem

এবং শ্রমিকেরা এই স্থপতিক নিদর্শণ তৈরি করছে

is unethical at best?

যখন তা নিতান্তই অনৈতিক?

Now, recently I've been told I've been taking the high road.

ইদানিং আমাকে বলা হচ্ছে যে আমি নাকি অতিসচেতন পথে চলছি।

But, quite frankly, on this issue,

there is no other road.

So let's not forget who is really paying the price of this financial collapse.

Let's not forget these men, who are truly dying to work.
