So, why did I do that?

That was awkward.

Hopefully not as awkward as that picture.

Image is powerful,

but also, image is superficial.

동시에 깊이가 얕기도 하죠.

I just totally transformed what you thought of me, in six seconds.

저는 겨우 6초만에 여러분들이 저에 대해 생각하고 계신 모습을 바꿨습니다.

And in this picture,

I had actually never had a boyfriend in real life.

사실 제 실제 생활에서 저는 한번도 남자 친구를 가져본 적이 없어서

I was totally uncomfortable,

꽤나 불편했어요. 사진 작가는 제게

and the photographer was telling me to arch my back

제 등을 뒤로 굽히고 손은 저 남자의 머리칼에 얹으라고

and put my hand in that guy's hair.

말해 주었어요.

And of course, barring surgery,

물론, 성형 수술이나

or the fake tan that I got two days ago for work,

이틀 전에 일 때문에 가짜 선탠하는 걸 제외하면

there's very little that we can do to transform how we look,

우리가 보이는 모습을 바꿀 수 있는 건 거의 없어요.

and how we look, though it is superficial and immutable,

그것이 피상적이면서도 바꿀 수 없기는 하지만,

has a huge impact on our lives.

우리가 보이는 모습은 일상에 엄청난 영향을 미칩니다.

So today, for me, being fearless means being honest.

요즘, 제게, 겁이 없다는 것은 정직하다는 것을 의미해요.

And I am on this stage because I am a model.

I am on this stage because I am a pretty, white woman,

and in my industry, we call that a sexy girl.

섹시한 여자라고 합니다만 -- 오늘 이 무대에 서게 된 겁니다.

I'm going to answer the questions that people always ask me,

오늘 저는 사람들이 늘 제게 묻는 질문에 대해 답해 드리려고 해요

거기엔 정직한 거짓말이 들어갈 겁니다.

but with an honest twist.

So the first question is, how do you become a model?

첫번째 질문은, 어떻게 모델이 되었는가?에요.

I always just say, "Oh, I was scouted,"

저는 항상 이렇게 답합니다. "아, 누군가 저를 섭외했어요." 하지만 그건 아무런 의미가 없는 말이죠.

but that means nothing.

The real way that I became a model

is I won a genetic lottery, and I am the recipient of a legacy,

and maybe you're wondering what is a legacy.

Well, for the past few centuries

we have defined beauty not just as health and youth

and symmetry that we're biologically programmed to admire,

but also as tall, slender figures,

and femininity and white skin.

여성성과 미백의 피부로 정의해 왔죠.

And this is a legacy that was built for me,

and it's a legacy that I've been cashing out on.

And I know there are people in the audience

who are skeptical at this point,

and maybe there are some fashionistas who are like,

어쩌면, 어떤 패셔니스트들은

"Wait. Naomi. Tyra. Joan Smalls. Liu Wen."

"잠깐만, 나오미, 티라, 조안 스몰스, 류 웬도 있잖아" 라고 하실지도 모르겟네요.

And first, I commend you on your model knowledge. Very impressive.

우선 제가 말씀드리고 싶은 것은 모델에 대한 지식입니다. 대단히 인상적이네요.

But unfortunately, I have to inform you that in 2007,

그런데 불행하게도, 제가 알려드리고 싶은 것은

a very inspired NYU Ph.D. student

2007년에 뉴욕대학의 박사과정에 있던 한 총명한 학생이

counted all the models on the runway, every single one that was hired,

활동중인 모든 모델을 세봤습니다. 고용되어 있는 모든 모델들을 말이죠.

and of the 677 models that were hired,

677명의 고용된 모델 가운데

only 27, or less than four percent, were non-white.

27명, 그러니까 4% 미만의 모델만이 백인이 아니었습니다.

The next question people always ask is,

사람들이 항상 묻는 두번째 질문은

"Can I be a model when I grow up?"

"제가 크면 모델이 될 수 있을까요? 라는 겁니다.

And the first answer is, "I don't know, they don't put me in charge of that."

첫번째 답은 "저도 모르죠. 제가 그럴 권한이 있지 않으니까요"죠.

저의 두번째 대답은, 어린 아이들에게 이렇게 말하고 싶진 않지만

But the second answer,

and what I really want to say to these little girls is,

"Why? You know? You can be anything.

"왜? 너는 뭐든 될 수 있단다.

You could be the President of the United States,

미국 대통령이 될 수도 있고

or the inventor of the next Internet,

이 다음 인터넷의 발명가가 될 수도 있고,

심장흉부 외과의사이면서 닌자 시인이 될 수도 있어.

or a ninja cardiothoracic surgeon poet,

which would be awesome, because you'd be the first one."

If, after this amazing list, they still are like,

이렇게 여러 가지를 말해도, 아이들은 여전히

"No, no, Cameron, I want to be a model,"

"아뇨, 카메론, 저는 모델이 되고 싶어요."라고 하죠.

그러면 제가 "네가 하고 싶은대로 하렴"이라고 답합니다.

well, then I say, "Be my boss."

Because I'm not in charge of anything,

제가 모든 것을 관장하지는 않기 때문에

여러분은 "보그(Vogue)"지의 편집장이 될 수도 있고

and you could be the editor in chief of American Vogue

H&M 의 대표나 제2의 스티븐 마이셀이 될 수도 있어요.

or the CEO of H&M, or the next Steven Meisel.

Saying that you want to be a model when you grow up

성인이 됐을 때 모델이 되고 싶다고 말하는 것은

is akin to saying that you want to win the Powerball when you grow up.

성인이 되어 파워볼(복권의 일종)에 당첨되겠다고 하는 것과 비슷합니다.

여러분이 어떻게 해볼 수 있는게 아닙니다. 대단하기는 하지만

It's out of your control, and it's awesome,

and it's not a career path.

평생할 일은 아니에요.

I will demonstrate for you now 10 years of accumulated model knowledge,

제가 10년동안 축적한 모델에 대한 지식을 여러분들께 알려드릴게요.

because unlike cardiothoracic surgeons,

심장흉뷰외과의 와는 달리

it can just be distilled right now.

그건 바로 요약이 가능한 일이니까요 . -- 바로 지금 말이에요.

So, if the photographer is right there,

사진작가가 있어서

the light is right there, like a nice HMI,

조명을 비추고 있다고 해보죠, HMI 같은거요,

and the client says, "We want a walking shot,"

그리고 고객은 이렇게 말합니다. "카메론, 걷는 모습을 찍으려고 해요."

그리고는, 이쪽 다리가 먼저 나가고--예쁘고 긴 다리죠-- 이쪽 팔은 뒤쪽으로 가고, 이쪽 팔은 앞으로 향하고,

this leg goes first, nice and long, this arm goes back, this arm goes forward,

머리는 3/4 정도를 향한 채로 앞뒤로 움직여 봐요.

the head is at three quarters, and you just go back and forth,

그냥 그렇게 하는 겁니다. 그리고는 상상속의 친구를 돌아보죠,

just do that, and then you look back at your imaginary friends,

300, 400, 500번쯤 돌아봅니다. (웃음)

300, 400, 500 times.

(Laughter)

It will look something like this.

그러면 이렇게 보이죠. (웃음)

(Laughter)

Hopefully less awkward than that one in the middle.

중간에 있는 것보다는 덜 이상해 보였으면 좋겠군요.

That was -- I don't know what happened there.

이런겁니다. 그때 무슨 일이 있었는지 모르겠어요.

Unfortunately, after you've gone to school,

불행히도 학교를 마친 다음 당신은,

and you have a résumé and you've done a few jobs,

이력서를 쓰고, 몇 개의 직장을 전전하죠,

그 이상은 할 말이 별로 없네요.

you can't say anything anymore,

만약 누군가가 미국 대통령이 되고 싶다고 하면,

so if you say you want to be the President of the United States,

그런데 이력서에 "속옷 모델:10년"이라고 쓰여 있으면

but your résumé reads, "Underwear Model: 10 years,"

사람들이 의아한 표정을 짓습니다.

people give you a funny look.

그 다음으로 사람들이 제게 묻곤 하는 것은 "모든 사진을 조작합니까?"라는 질문이죠.

The next question is, "Do they retouch all the photos?"

And yeah, they pretty much retouch all the photos,

네 모든 사진은 어느 정도 조작을 하기도 합니다.

하지만 실제 있던 것의 극히 일부일 뿐이에요.

but that is only a small component of what's happening.

이 사진은 제가 처음으로 찍은 건데요,

This picture is the very first picture that I ever took,

게다가 비키니를 처음으로 입었던 때인데,

and it's also the very first time that I had worn a bikini,

and I didn't even have my period yet.

아직 생리도 시작하기 전이었어요.

I know we're getting personal, but I was a young girl.

너무 개인적인 것으로 흐르고 있죠?

어쨌든 저는 어린 소녀였어요.

This is what I looked like with my grandma just a few months earlier.

이게 그보다 몇달 전에 할머니와 함께 있는 제 모습이에요.

이건 이 사진을 찍은 같은 날의 제 모습입니다.

Here's me on the same day as this shoot.

My friend got to come.

제 친구가 왔었죠.

Here's me at a slumber party a few days before I shot French Vogue.

이건 제가 불어판 보그(Vogue)를 찍기 며칠 전 밤샘 파티를 하고 있는 제 모습이에요.

Here's me on the soccer team and in V Magazine.

이건 축구팀과 함께 V라는 잡지에 찍은 모습이구요.

And here's me today.

그리고 오늘 제가 여기 섰습니다.

And I hope what you're seeing

저는 여러분들이 이 사진들은 저를 찍은 것이 아니라고

is that these pictures are not pictures of me.

여겨 주시기를 바랍니다.

They are constructions,

이 사진들은 만들어 낸 것이에요.

and they are constructions by a group of professionals,

프로들 몇몇이 모여 만들어 낸 모습이라는 거죠.

by hairstylists and makeup artists and photographers and stylists

헤어스타일리스트와 메이크업아티스트, 사진 작가와 스타일리스트들이 모여

and all of their assistants and pre-production and post-production,

모든 도움을 받고 미리 해보기도 하고 또 촬영 후에도 작품을 합니다.

그렇게 해서 이런걸 만들어 내는거죠. 그건 제가 아닙니다.

and they build this.

That's not me.

Okay, so the next question people always ask me is,

그 다음으로 사람들이 항상 제게 묻는 것은

"거저 얻는 것이 있느냐?는 질문이에요.

"Do you get free stuff?"

(Laughter)

I do have too many 8-inch heels which I never get to wear,

제게는 전혀 신지 않는 20cm 굽의 구두가 너무 많이 있습니다.

except for earlier,

초창기에만 신었죠.

but the free stuff that I get is the free stuff that I get in real life,

그런데 제가 공짜로 받는 것들은

실생활에서 공짜로 받는 겁니다. 그건 이야기하고 싶지 않아요.

and that's what we don't like to talk about.

저는 캠브리지에서 자랐습니다.

I grew up in Cambridge,

and one time I went into a store and I forgot my money

한번은 가게에 갓는데 돈을 잊고 간겁니다.

and they gave me the dress for free.

가게에서는 제게 옷을 공짜로 주었어요 .

When I was a teenager, I was driving with my friend

10대에는 운전을 정말 못하는제 친구와

who was an awful driver and she ran a red and of course,

차를 타고 가고 있었는데 그 친구가 빨간불을 지나간거에요.

물론 경찰에 잡혔죠.

we got pulled over,

and all it took was a "Sorry, officer," and we were on our way.

우리가 한거라곤 "죄송합니다, 경관님" 이라고 한 것이 전부인데

저희를 아무 문제없이 보내주었어요.

And I got these free things because of how I look,

이런 것들이 제가 거저 얻게 된 것들인데, 그건 제가 누구인가가 아니라

not who I am, and there are people paying a cost

제가 가진 겉모습 때문에 얻게 된 것들이죠. 자신이 누구인가가 아니라

for how they look and not who they are.

자신이 생긴 모습 때문에 댓가를 치르는 사람들이 있어요.

I live in New York, and last year,

저는 뉴욕에 살고 있는게 지난 해에

of the 140,000 teenagers that were stopped and frisked,

뉴욕에서 검문과 몸수색을 당한 14만명의 10대 가운데

86% of them were black and Latino, and most of them were young men.

86%가 흑인이거나 라틴계였습니다.

그 대부분이 젊은이들이었죠.

And there are only 177,000 young black and Latino men in New York,

뉴욕시에는 겨우 17만 7천명의 흑인과 라틴계 젊은이들이 삽니다.

so for them, it's not a question of, "Will I get stopped?"

그들에게는 "내가 검문을 당할 것인가?" 가 문제가 아니라

but "How many times will I get stopped? When will I get stopped?"

"얼마나 자주 혹은 언제 검문을 당할 것인가?" 가 문제인거죠.

When I was researching this talk,

제가 이 강연을 위해 준비하면서

미국의 13세 소녀들 가운데

I found out that of the 13-year-old girls in the United States,

53% don't like their bodies,

53%가 자신의 외모를 좋아하지 않는다는 사실을 발견했습니다.

and that number goes to 78% by the time that they're 17.

그들이 17살이 될 때는 그 숫자가 78%까지 올라갔어요.

사람들이 제게 묻곤하는 마지막 잘문은

So, the last question people ask me is,

"What is it like to be a model?"

"모델이 되면 어떻느냐?"는 것이이에요.

And I think the answer that they're looking for is,

그 사람들이 바라는 답은 이런겁니다.

"If you are a little bit skinnier and you have shinier hair,

"당신이 약간 마르고 빛나는 머리칼을 갖고 있으면

you will be so happy and fabulous."

행복해지고 대단할겁니다"라는 것이죠.

And when we're backstage,

저희가 무대에 설 때는

we give an answer that maybe makes it seem like that.

아마 그렇게 보인다고 대답할 수 있을지 모릅니다.

모델들은 이렇게 말하죠. "여행할 기회가 있어서 좋아요.

We say, "It's really amazing to travel, and it's amazing to get to work

그리고 창의적이고 영감을 주는 열정적인 사람들과 함께 일하는 것은 정말 좋아요."라고요.

with creative, inspired, passionate people."

And those things are true, but they're only one half of the story,

그건 사실이기는 하지만 그런 사람들은 전체의 방 정도 밖에 되지 않습니다.

because the thing that we never say on camera,

왜냐하면 사람들이 카메라 앞에서는 절대로 하지 않는 말이 있죠,

that I have never said on camera, is,

저도 카메라 앞에서는 한번도 그렇게 말하지 않았습니다.

"I am insecure."

그건 "불안정하다"는 것이에요.

And I'm insecure because I have to think about what I look like every day.

저는 불안합니다. 왜냐하면 매일 제가 어떻게

보이는가에 신경을 써야 하니까요.

여러분들이 이런 생각을 하게 되면,

And if you ever are wondering,

"If I have thinner thighs and shinier hair, will I be happier?"

"다리가 더 가늘고 머리칼이 더 빛나면, 행복해질까?"라는 생각이요,

you just need to meet a group of models,

그렇다면 모델들 가운데 이런 사람들을 만나보시면 됩니다.

because they have the thinnest thighs, the shiniest hair and the coolest clothes,

그들은 가장 가는 다리와 최고로 빛나는 머리칼을 가졌고 최고의 멋진 옷을 입지만

아마도 물리적으로는 세상에서 가장 불안정한 사람들일 겁니다.

and they're the most physically insecure women probably on the planet.

When I was writing this talk,

제가 이 강연을 준비할 때, 정직한 균형을 잡기가

I found it very difficult to strike an honest balance,

정말 어렵더군요. 왜냐하면, 한편으로는

because on the one hand,

제가 여기 나와서 이렇게 이야기 하는 것이 마음 편하지 않았어요.

I felt very uncomfortable to come out here and say,

"Look I've received all these benefits from a deck stacked in my favor,"

"자 보세요, 저는 이런 모든 안락함을 모두 누렸습니다"라고요.

그리고는 이런 식으로 가는건 더 불편했어요.

and it also felt really uncomfortable to follow that up with,

"그런데 이런게 저를 항상 행복하게 하지는 않습니다." 이렇게요.

"and it doesn't always make me happy."

But mostly it was difficult to unpack a legacy of gender and racial oppression

하지만 가장 중요한 것은 여자라는 특권과 인종적인 압박을

털어 놓는 것도 어려웠어요.

when I am one of the biggest beneficiaries.

저는 최고의 수혜자 중에 하나거든요.

하지만 저는 행복하고 여기 이 자리에 설 수 있는 것이 영광입니다.

But I'm also happy and honored to be up here

and I think that it's great that I got to come

제가 10년, 20년 혹은 30년이 지난 후에

before 10 or 20 or 30 years had passed and I'd had more agency in my career,

제 경력에 더 많은 대리인을 갖기 전에 여기 나오게 된 것은 정말 잘 된 일입니다.

because maybe then I wouldn't tell the story of how I got my first job,

왜냐하면 그 때는 제가 어떻게 제 첫 직장을 갖게 되었는지 말하지 못했을거니까요.

or maybe I wouldn't tell the story of how I paid for college,

아니면 제가 어떻게 대학 학비를 댔는지도 말하지 못했을 겁니다.

which seems so important right now.

그런 것들이 지금 현재는 아주 중요하게 보이거든요.

If there's a takeaway to this talk,

이 강연에 어떤 반전이 있다면, 그건

I hope it's that we all feel more comfortable acknowledging

우리 모두가 우리가 인지하고 있는 성공이나

the power of image in our perceived successes

실패에 있어서 이미지가 갖는 힘의 중요성을 말하는데

and our perceived failures.

더 편안해졌다는 것이기를 희망합니다.
