So for any of us in this room today, let's start out by admitting we're lucky.

We don't live in the world our mothers lived in,

우리는 우리 어머니 혹은 할머니 세대가 살던

여성들의 직업 선택이 아주 한정적이었던

our grandmothers lived in,

where career choices for women were so limited.

그런 세상에 살고 있지는 않기 때문이지요.

And if you're in this room today,

또한 여러분이 이 자리에 계시다는 것은

most of us grew up in a world where we have basic civil rights,

여러분은 기본적인 민권이 보장되는 곳에서

자랐다는 것을 방증하게 됩니다.

and amazingly, we still live in a world where some women don't have them.

하지만 놀라운 것은 우리가 살고 있는 이 세계에서는

아직도 이러한 권리를 누리지 못하는 여성들이 살고 있다는 것이죠.

But all that aside, we still have a problem,

하지만 모든 걸 차치하고서라도, 여전히 문제가 있습니다.

정말 심각한 문제입니다.

and it's a real problem.

And the problem is this:

그 문제가 뭐냐구요? 바로...

Women are not making it to the top of any profession

여성들이 사회에서

고위층으로 진출하지 못한다는 것입니다.

anywhere in the world.

직업, 국가를 막론하고서요.

The numbers tell the story quite clearly.

숫자를 보시면 확연히 느끼실 수 있을겁니다.

190 heads of state -- nine are women.

190개의 나라의 원수 중

고작 9명만이 여성 지도자입니다.

Of all the people in parliament in the world,

전 세계의 국회의원들 중 여성이 차지하는 비율은

13 percent are women.

13퍼센트이구요.

법인단체에서,

In the corporate sector, women at the top,

고위직, 그러니깐

C-level jobs, board seats --

최고경영자 혹은 이사회에서 요직을 차지하는 여성비율은

tops out at 15, 16 percent.

15~16 퍼센트입니다.

The numbers have not moved since 2002

그리고 이들 수치는 지난 2002년 이후로 변함이 없습니다.

상황은 오히려 안 좋게 흘러갑니다.

and are going in the wrong direction.

And even in the non-profit world,

그리고 심지어 소위 비영리 재단,단체등과 같이

a world we sometimes think of as being led by more women,

women at the top: 20 percent.

We also have another problem,

which is that women face harder choices

between professional success and personal fulfillment.

A recent study in the U.S. showed that, of married senior managers,

two-thirds of the married men had children

and only one-third of the married women had children.

여성의 경우 겨우 3분의 1만이 아이를 기르고 있었습니다.

A couple of years ago, I was in New York,

몇 년 전 저는 뉴욕에서

and I was pitching a deal,

계약건을 협상하고 있었습니다.

and I was in one of those fancy New York private equity offices

흔히 상상하시듯, 뉴욕의 으리으리하고 세련된

개인 사무실에서요.

you can picture.

아무튼 장장 세 시간에 걸친 미팅을 하고 있었습니다.

And I'm in the meeting -- it's about a three-hour meeting --

and two hours in, there needs to be that bio break,

그리고 두 시간째 접어들 무렵, 다들 잠깐 화장실을 가기 위해

일어섰는데요,

and everyone stands up,

and the partner running the meeting starts looking really embarrassed.

그 회의를 주최했던 동료분이

상당히 당황한 표정을 짓더군요.

And I realized he doesn't know where the women's room is in his office.

이유인 즉슨 여자 화장실이 어디에 있는지

자신이 사무실 주인이면서도 몰랐기 때문이죠.

So I start looking around for moving boxes,

최근에 입주했음을 보여주는 이삿짐 박스들 사이로

화장실을 찾아 보았지만 보이지 않더군요.

figuring they just moved in, but I don't see any.

And so I said, "Did you just move into this office?"

그래서 물었죠, "아 최근에 사무실 입주 하셨나 보네요?"

그랬더니 그 분은. "아니요, 이사 온지는 한 일 년 되었는데요." 라고 하시더군요.

And he said, "No, we've been here about a year."

And I said, "Are you telling me that I am the only woman

그래서 저는, "아니 그럼 지금

일년 동안 여기서 미팅한 사람중에

to have pitched a deal in this office in a year?"

여자는 저 밖에 없었단 말씀이세요?" 라고 물었죠.

And he looked at me, and he said,

그 분은 저를 보시더니 말씀하셨어요.

"Yeah. Or maybe you're the only one who had to go to the bathroom."

"그런것 같네요, 아니면 굳이 여기서 화장실을 쓰려 했던 최초의 여성이신지도..."

(Laughter)

(웃음)

So the question is, how are we going to fix this?

문제는 이겁니다.

어떻게 이런 현재의 상황을 고치느냐?

How do we change these numbers at the top?

어떻게 고위층의 여성 비율을 높일 수 있느냐?

어떻게 차이를 만들 수 있느냐? 라는 겁니다.

How do we make this different?

I want to start out by saying, I talk about this --

그에 대한 대답으로

우선

about keeping women in the workforce --

현재 일자리에 있는 여성들을 지키는 것에 대해서 말하고 싶습니다.

because I really think that's the answer.

그것만이 유일한 정답이기 때문입니다.

In the high-income part of our workforce,

직장의 고소득층 직위나

혹은 포츈지 선정 500명의 CEO

in the people who end up at the top --

Fortune 500 CEO jobs, or the equivalent in other industries --

또는 그와 준하는 직위에

대해서 논할 때 문제는,

the problem, I am convinced, is that women are dropping out.

바로 여성은 여기서 배제된다는 것에서 시작된다고

저는 확신합니다.

Now people talk about this a lot,

요즘 사람들이 이 제주에 대해서 많이들 이야기 하는데요

and they talk about things like flextime and mentoring

그럴 때마다 근무 시간 자유제니 상담이니

제도니 따위로 직장 내 여성교육에 대해서 열변을 토합니다만,

and programs companies should have to train women.

I want to talk about none of that today,

오늘 저는 여기서 그런 것들은 이야기 하지 않고 싶습니다.

even though that's all really important.

물론 그런것들이 중요하지 않다는 것은 아닙니다.

Today I want to focus on what we can do as individuals.

다만 오늘은 개인이 할 수 있는 일에 대해 좀 더 집중하고자 합니다.

What are the messages we need to tell ourselves?

우리는 우리 자신에게 과연 무엇을 말해 주어야 할까요?

What are the messages we tell the women that work with and for us?

그리고 우리와 함께 일하는, 혹은 우리를 위해서 일하는 여성들에게 무엇을 말해 주어야 할까요?

What are the messages we tell our daughters?

나아가 우리의 딸들에게는요?

Now, at the outset, I want to be very clear

우선 오늘 제가 드리는 말씀엔 어떠한 편견도

없다는 것을 처음부터 확실히 하고 싶습니다.

that this speech comes with no judgments.

I don't have the right answer.

저는 정답을 드릴 수 없습니다.

I don't even have it for myself.

심지어 저 자신 조차 그 정답을 알지 못합니다.

I left San Francisco, where I live, on Monday,

월요일, 이 대회를 위해

and I was getting on the plane for this conference.

저는 샌프란시스코에서 이곳으로 비행기를 타고 왔습니다.

세 살된 제 딸을 유치원에 데려주고 길을 나설 때

And my daughter, who's three, when I dropped her off at preschool,

딸이 울면서 제 다리를 잡고는

did that whole hugging-the-leg, crying, "Mommy, don't get on the plane" thing.

"엄마 가지마, 비행기 타지마." 라고 했습니다.

This is hard. I feel guilty sometimes.

힘든 순간입니다. 어쩔때는 죄책감마저 들지요.

I know no women,

어느 여성이라고

whether they're at home or whether they're in the workforce,

집에 있든, 직장에 있든 저의 이런 기분을

안느껴보았을까요.

who don't feel that sometimes.

So I'm not saying that staying in the workforce

그래서 저는 오로지 직장에만 모든 것을 쏟는 것이

is the right thing for everyone.

누구에게나 능사라고 말하지는 않겠습니다.

My talk today is about what the messages are

제가 오늘 하고자 하는 이야기는 자신이 직장에 머무르기를

if you do want to stay in the workforce,

원할때 도움이 될 수 있는 조언들입니다.

and I think there are three.

크게 봐서 세 가지를 말씀드리고 싶은데요.

One, sit at the table.

첫째, 책상에 앉아라.

Two, make your partner a real partner.

둘째, 여러분의 동료를 진정한 동료로 만들라.

And three, don't leave before you leave.

그리고 세번째, 그만둬야 하기 전엔 그만두지 말라. 입니다.

우선 첫번째, 책상에 앉아라 부터 볼까요.

Number one: sit at the table.

바로 몇 주전 페이스북을 통해

Just a couple weeks ago at Facebook,

we hosted a very senior government official,

정부 최고위관료를 초청해,

and he came in to meet with senior execs

실리콘 밸리의 각 계의 고위인사들과의

만남을 주선했습니다.

from around Silicon Valley.

And everyone kind of sat at the table.

모두들 책상에 앉았습니다.

He had these two women who were traveling with him

그 관료분 곁에는 이번 여정에 동행한

pretty senior in his department,

두 분의 여성 고위관료분들이 있었습니다.

and I kind of said to them,

저는 그 두분에게 책상에 앉으라고 권했지만,

"Sit at the table. Come on, sit at the table,"

and they sat on the side of the room.

그 두분은 회의실 구석 쪽에 앉으셨습니다.

When I was in college, my senior year,

제가 대학교 4학년 때,

I took a course called European Intellectual History.

유럽지성사란 과목을 수강했었는데요.

Don't you love that kind of thing from college?

대학의 낭만이란 이런 과목이 아닐까요.

I wish I could do that now.

지금도 다시 듣고 싶군요.

And I took it with my roommate, Carrie,

당시 저는 제 룸메이트였던 케리와 수업을 들었는데,

who was then a brilliant literary student --

케리는 정말 뛰어난 문학도였어요.

and went on to be a brilliant literary scholar --

그 후 더욱 뛰어난 학자가 되기 위해 공부를 계속 했습니다.

그리고 제 남동생...

and my brother -- smart guy,

똑똑한 애였죠, 수구를 좋아하는 의과 학생이었는데

but a water-polo-playing pre-med,

who was a sophomore.

그 당시 2학년이었습니다.

The three of us take this class together.

이렇게 저희 셋이서 그 과목을 같이 수강했습니다.

And then Carrie reads all the books in the original Greek and Latin,

그리고 케리는 그리스, 로마 원서를

쭉 읽고

한 번도 결석을 하지 않았습니다.

goes to all the lectures.

I read all the books in English

저는 영어로된 책을 읽고

and go to most of the lectures.

수업을 거의 다 참석했습니다.

My brother is kind of busy.

제 남동생은 좀 바빴나봐요.

He reads one book of 12 and goes to a couple of lectures,

교과서 12권 중 하나만 읽고

수업 또한 한, 두번 밖에 나가지 않았습니다.

marches himself up to our room

그리고 시험을 고작 며칠 앞두고서야 불안해서

저희 방으로 모습을 드러냈죠.

a couple days before the exam to get himself tutored.

자 이제 저희 셋은 시험을 보러 갔습니다.

The three of us go to the exam together, and we sit down.

And we sit there for three hours --

거의 세 시간동안 꼼짝 앉고 앉아 있어야 햇죠.

작은 파란색 공책과 함께,,, 그래요 제가 나이가 좀 많죠.

and our little blue notebooks -- yes, I'm that old.

We walk out, we look at each other, and we say, "How did you do?"

시험을 마치고 나오면서 서로를 보면서 "시험 잘봤어?"라고 물었죠.

And Carrie says, "Boy, I feel like I didn't really draw out the main point

케리는 말하길, "글쎄, 헤겔 변증법의 핵심을 제대로

못잡아 낸것 같아."라고 했고,

on the Hegelian dialectic."

And I say, "God, I really wish I had really connected

저는 "아, 진짜 사유재산론하고 나머지 철학자들하고

John Locke's theory of property with the philosophers that follow."

어떻게든 엮어담 얼마나 좋았을까!" 라고 탄식했죠.

And my brother says,

그러자 제 동생은 말하길,

"I got the top grade in the class."

"내가 반에서 일등이야."

(Laughter)

"You got the top grade in the class?

"뭐? 너가 반에서 일등이라고?"

You don't know anything."

"너가 아는게 뭐가 있었다고."

(Laughter)

The problem with these stories is that they show what the data shows:

이상 말씀 드린 저의 작은 이야기가 내포하는 문제점은

바로 현재 여성의 위치를 단적으로 보여준다는 것입니다.

women systematically underestimate their own abilities.

여성이 제도적으로 자신의 능력에 비해서 과소평가되고 있다는 것을요.

If you test men and women,

예를 들어 남성과 여성을 상대로

and you ask them questions on totally objective criteria like GPAs,

정말 객관적으로 짜여진 문제를 풀게 했을 경우,

men get it wrong slightly high,

남성의 경우 오답의 확률이 약간 높고,

and women get it wrong slightly low.

여성은 약간 낮습니다.

Women do not negotiate for themselves in the workforce.

여성은 직장에서 좀처럼 협상의 태도를 취하지 않습니다.

A study in the last two years

갓 대학을 졸업한 사회 초년생을

of people entering the workforce out of college

상대로 조사한 지난 2년간의 연구를 살펴보니

showed that 57 percent of boys entering, or men, I guess,

57퍼센트의 소년들...

아니 남성의 경우

are negotiating their first salary,

첫 연봉에 대해서 협상을 했습니다.

and only seven percent of women.

여성의 경우는 고작 7퍼센트만 협상을 했구요.

And most importantly,

가장 중요한 것은,

men attribute their success to themselves,

남성의 경우 자신의 업무성과를 자신의 공으로 돌리지만,

and women attribute it to other external factors.

여성은 반대로 외부적 요인에 근거한다고 여긴다는 것입니다.

If you ask men why they did a good job,

만약 남성에게 그렇게 좋은 업무성과를 낸 이유가 무엇이냐고 묻는다면,

they'll say, "I'm awesome.

아마도, "제가 끝내주니까요."

Obviously. Why are you even asking?"

"물어볼 필요도 없는걸 왜 묻고 그러세요?" 라고 할겁니다.

If you ask women why they did a good job,

반대로 여성에게 묻는다면

what they'll say is someone helped them,

아마도 직장동료의 도움이 컸다고 이야기를 하거나

they got lucky, they worked really hard.

운이나 좋았고 또 열심히 일을 해서 라고 말을 할 가능성이 큽니다.

Why does this matter?

이 차이가 무슨 문제냐구요?

Boy, it matters a lot.

이것이 시사하는 바는 크답니다.

Because no one gets to the corner office

왜냐하면 모퉁이의 멋진 사무실에서

by sitting on the side, not at the table,

탁자가 아니라 사무실의 구석에 앉거나

and no one gets the promotion

절대 승진은 바랄 수도 없게 되는 것이죠.

if they don't think they deserve their success,

만약 여성들이 계속 자신의 성공을 부정하거나 하찮게 여기고

or they don't even understand their own success.

심지어 자신이 성공했다는 것 조차 이해하지 못한다면요.

해답이 쉽다면 얼마나 좋겠습니까.

I wish the answer were easy.

I wish I could go tell all the young women I work for,

저도 같이 일하는 여성사원들, 이 멋지고 능력있는

여성들에게 달려가서

these fabulous women,

"Believe in yourself and negotiate for yourself.

"자신을 믿고, 자신을 위해 협상을 할 줄 아는 안목을 가져요"

Own your own success."

"자신만의 성공을 쟁취하세요" 라고 말할 수만 있다면요.

I wish I could tell that to my daughter.

제 딸에게도 같은 조언을 할 수 있으면 좋겠어요.

But it's not that simple.

하지만 문제가 이렇게 간단하지 만은 않습니다.

Because what the data shows, above all else, is one thing,

이유는 계속 말씀드린 데이터 수치를 보면 알 수 있어요. 하나입니다.

which is that success and likeability are positively correlated for men

문제는 이 모든 성공과 성공 가능성이

의심할 바 없이 남성에게 편향되어 있다는 것입니다.

and negatively correlated for women.

물론 여성에게는 암울하구요.

And everyone's nodding, because we all know this to be true.

모두들 고개를 끄덕입니다.

모르긴 몰라도 모두들 이 요인만큼은 사실이라 알고 있기 때문이죠.

There's a really good study that shows this really well.

이 특성을 아주 잘 나타내주는 훌륭한 연구결과가 하나 있는데요.

There's a famous Harvard Business School study

하바드 비지니스 스쿨에서 하이디 로이젠이란 여성을 대상으로

on a woman named Heidi Roizen.

실시한 유명한 연구입니다.

And she's an operator in a company in Silicon Valley,

그리고 하이디씨는 실리콘 밸리에 위치한

한 회사의 중역이구요.

and she uses her contacts

그리고 이 분은 성공적인 벤쳐 투자자가 되기 위해

to become a very successful venture capitalist.

그녀의 연줄을 이용합니다.

In 2002 -- not so long ago --

2002년, 그리 오래 되진 않았죠.

a professor who was then at Columbia University

당시 콜럼비아 대학의 한 교수가

took that case and made it [Howard] Roizen.

이 사례를 지켜보고 논문을 발표했죠.

And he gave the case out, both of them, to two groups of students.

그리고 자신의 두 그룹으로 나뉜

학생들에게 이것을 배포했는데

He changed exactly one word:

한 단어만 바꿨어요.

"Heidi" to "Howard."

바로 하이디를 하워드로요.

But that one word made a really big difference.

하지만 이 한 단어가 엄청난 차이를 불어일으켰습니다.

He then surveyed the students,

그리고 교수는 학생들에게 설문을 했는데,

and the good news was the students, both men and women,

좋은소식은 남,여학생 모두 하이디와 하워드 둘 다

thought Heidi and Howard were equally competent,

동등하게 능력있는 사람이라고 생각했다는 것입니다.

and that's good.

여기까진 좋죠.

The bad news was that everyone liked Howard.

나쁜소식은, 모든 학생이 하워드만 좋아했다는 겁니다.

He's a great guy. You want to work for him.

"정말 대단한 사람같아요, 밑에서 일하고 싶을 정도네요"

You want to spend the day fishing with him.

"하루종일 그 분하고 낚시하고 싶어요."

그런데 하이디의 경우는? 잘 모르겠네요. 라는 겁니다.

But Heidi? Not so sure.

She's a little out for herself. She's a little political.

좀 독단적이고 이기적일 것 같아요, 정치성향도 좀 셀것 같구요.

You're not sure you'd want to work for her.

같이 일하고 싶은 상사인지는 모르겠어요. 라는 겁니다.

This is the complication.

바로 이런것이 문제입니다.

We have to tell our daughters and our colleagues,

우리 딸과 우리 여성 동료들에게 말해야합니다.

we have to tell ourselves to believe we got the A,

아니 우리 자신에게도요, 바로 우리가

승진할 수 있고, 회의에서 당당히 탁자에 앉을 수 있는

to reach for the promotion, to sit at the table,

자격이 있다구요.

and we have to do it in a world

더 나아가, 아직도

where, for them, there are sacrifices they will make for that,

여성들이 이러한 문제, 심지어 남자형제를 위해서 자신을 희생하는

even though for their brothers, there are not.

세상에 살고 있는 여성에게도 말해야합니다.

The saddest thing about all of this is that it's really hard to remember this.

슬픈점은 이 모든 것이 쉽게 잊혀진다는 것입니다.

And I'm about to tell a story which is truly embarrassing for me,

그리고 이제 여러분께 저를 정말 부끄럽게 했던 일화 하나 들려 드리고자 합니다.

but I think important.

중요한 이야기입니다.

I gave this talk at Facebook not so long ago

얼마 전 저희 페이스북 직원들을 상대로

to about 100 employees,

같은 주제로 강연을한 적이 있습니다.

그리고 몇 시간 후, 제 책상 가 쪽에 앉아 있던 페이스북 여성직원

and a couple hours later, there was a young woman who works there

한명이 있었는데,

sitting outside my little desk, and she wanted to talk to me.

저랑 이야기를 나누고 싶어했습니다.

I said, okay, and she sat down, and we talked.

저는 좋다고 했고, 앉아서 우리는 이야기를 했어요.

And she said, "I learned something today.

그 분은, "오늘 하나 배웠네요."

I learned that I need to keep my hand up."

"이젠 손을 계속 올리고 있어야 된다는 것을요." 라고 했습니다.

"그게 무슨 뜻이죠?" 라고 저는 물었습니다.

"What do you mean?"

She said, "You're giving this talk,

그녀가 말하길, "보세요, 아까 강연하시면서"

and you said you would take two more questions.

"이제 두 개의 질문만 더 받고 끝내겠다고 하셨는데"

I had my hand up with many other people,

"제가 다른 직원들하고 같이 손을 올렸을 때, 질문 두 개를 받으셨죠."

and you took two more questions.

그리고 저는 손을 내렸어요, 아니 모든 여성직원들은 다 내렸죠."

I put my hand down, and I noticed all the women did the same,

"질문기회가 끝났으니까요, 그런데도 손을 든 남자직원들

and then you took more questions,

질문을 더 받으셨죠."

only from the men."

제 머리가 띵하더군요.

And I thought to myself,

"Wow, if it's me -- who cares about this, obviously --

만약 저라면, 분명히

giving this talk --

강연하면서 그런걸 신경이나 썼을까요.

and during this talk, I can't even notice that the men's hands are still raised,

실제로 강연 중, 저는

남자의 손이 계속 올려져있는지 여성이 그런지

and the women's hands are still raised,

전혀 눈치조차 못채거든요.

how good are we

한 회사, 혹은 기관의 요직에 있으면서

as managers of our companies and our organizations

우리들은 남성이 여성보다 더 기회를 많이 쟁취하는 것을

at seeing that the men are reaching for opportunities

얼마나 잘 보고 있나요.

more than women?"

이젠 여성들을 구석이 아니라

We've got to get women to sit at the table.

탁자에 동등히 앉혀야 합니다.

두번째 조언은

Message number two:

Make your partner a real partner.

여러분의 동료를 진정한 동료로 만들라입니다.

I've become convinced that we've made more progress in the workforce

사실 가정에서 보다 직장에서 사고의 진전과 발전을 이뤘다고

than we have in the home.

생각합니다.

The data shows this very clearly.

수치가 모든걸 말해주죠.

If a woman and a man work full-time and have a child,

남편, 아내가 모두 정규직이고

아이가 있는 가정의 경우

the woman does twice the amount of housework the man does,

아내가 남편보다 두 배의 양에 달하는 집안일을 하고,

and the woman does three times the amount of childcare the man does.

세 배의 양에 달하는

아이 돌보기를 합니다.

So she's got three jobs or two jobs, and he's got one.

아내는 직업이 세 개나 두 개인 셈이죠.

물론 남편은 하나이구요.

Who do you think drops out when someone needs to be home more?

집에 있을 때 진이 빠지게 되는 쪽은 어디일까요?

이 문제의 원인은 매우 복잡해서

The causes of this are really complicated, and I don't have time to go into them.

오늘 일일히 구석구석 따져보진 않겠습니다.

And I don't think Sunday football-watching and general laziness is the cause.

물론 일요일에 축구 시청이나 일반적인 게으름이

그 원인이라고 생각하지도 않습니다.

I think the cause is more complicated.

말씀드렸듯이, 더 복잡합니다.

사회적으로, 제가 진단하는 바는

I think, as a society,

we put more pressure on our boys to succeed

남자아이들에게도 똑같이 성공에 대한 압박을

than we do on our girls.

지워야 한다는 것입니다.

I know men that stay home

물론 저도 일하는 아내를

and work in the home to support wives with careers,

두고 집에서 가정일을 하는 전업주부 노릇을 하는 남자들을 알지요.

물론 힘들겁니다.

and it's hard.

When I go to the Mommy-and-Me stuff and I see the father there,

저 같은 경우에도 아이와 놀러 놀이터에라도 가면

엄마 대신 아빠가 있는 장면도 많이 봐요.

I notice that the other mommies don't play with him.

그리고 다른 엄마들이 그 남자분하고는

어울리지 않는다는 것도 알아채죠.

And that's a problem,

문제입니다.

속칭 집안일이야 말로 세상에서 가장 힘든일이기에

because it's the hardest job in the world to work inside the home,

그 일에 중요성을 다시금 부여여 해야만 하기 때문이죠.

for people of both genders,

그리고 우리가 진정 당면한 직장 내 여성 문제를 해결하고

if we're going to even things out and let women stay in the workforce.

계속 여성의 사회적 진출을 유지하길 원한다면요.

Studies show that households with equal earning

연구에 따르면 수입이 엇비슷하고,

and equal responsibility

집안일을 평등하게 하는 가정일수록

also have half the divorce rate.

이혼율이 절반이었습니다.

And if that wasn't good enough motivation for everyone out there,

낮은 이혼율 정도로는 여러분께 큰 자극이 안된다면,

they also have more --

다른 것이 있긴 한데...

Message number three:

자 세번째 조언.

Don't leave before you leave.

그만둬야 하기 전에는 그만두지 말아라.

I think there's a really deep irony

직장생활에서 제가 심심치 않게 목격하는

to the fact that actions women are taking --

여성들의 행동, 즉 직장에 오래 머무르려는

and I see this all the time --

목적으로 말미암아

with the objective of staying in the workforce

그들이 취하는 행동이 결국 그들을 직장에서 그만두게 만든다는

actually lead to their eventually leaving.

큰 아이러니가 있습니다.

Here's what happens:

무슨 말이냐구요. 이렇습니다.

We're all busy. Everyone's busy. A woman's busy.

직장에선 다들 바쁩니다. 여성도 바쁘죠.

And she starts thinking about having a child,

그런데 여성이 아이를 갖는 것을 생각하기 시작합니다.

and from the moment she starts thinking about having a child,

그리고 아이를 갖는 것을 생각하는 바로 그 순간 부터

she starts thinking about making room for that child.

그녀는

"현재의 모든 생황 방식과 아이 갖는 것을 어떻게 맞춰야 하지?" 라고 고민합니다.

"How am I going to fit this into everything else I'm doing?"

And literally from that moment,

그리고 말 그대로 그 순간부터,

이 여성은 더 이상 "손을 올리지" 않습니다.

she doesn't raise her hand anymore,

she doesn't look for a promotion, she doesn't take on the new project,

더 이상 승진에 목메지도 않고, 새로운 프로젝트 또한 맡지 않습니다.

she doesn't say, "Me. I want to do that."

"저요, 제가 할께요." 라는 말은 더이상 없습니다.

She starts leaning back.

서서히 뒤로 물러서 기대는 겁니다.

The problem is that --

여기서 문제는...

let's say she got pregnant that day, that day --

자, 이 여성이 임신 했다고 가정을 하죠.

nine months of pregnancy, three months of maternity leave,

9개월째입니다, 이제 3개월의 출산휴가가 주어질테고,

six months to catch your breath --

약 6개월정도 숨 돌릴 시간도 필요하겠죠.

Fast-forward two years,

이렇게 2년이, 혹은 2년 이상이

more often -- and as I've seen it --

후딱 가버립니다. 제가 본 바로는요.

women start thinking about this way earlier --

여자는 이런 생각을 초기에 합니다.

when they get engaged, or married,

약혼 했을 때, 결혼 했을 때 부터

when they start thinking about having a child,

이제 아이를 가져야 겠다고 계획한 순간부터 말입니다.

which can take a long time.

한 직원이 이 문제로 저를 찾아왔어요,

One woman came to see me about this.

얼굴을 보니 꽤 젊어 보였습니다.

She looked a little young.

And I said, "So are you and your husband thinking about having a baby?"

저는, "그래서 남편분하고 이제 아이를 가질 계획 인가요?" 라고 물었더니,

그녀는, "아니요, 전 결혼도 안했는걸요." 라고 했지요.

And she said, "Oh no, I'm not married."

She didn't even have a boyfriend.

맞아요, 그녀는 아직 남자친구 조차 없었습니다.

(Laughter)

I said, "You're thinking about this just way too early."

"벌써부터 이런 생각하기엔

너무 일러요." 라고 저는 말했습니다.

But the point is that what happens

사실 핵심은 여성이 조용히 뒤로 물러날때

once you start kind of quietly leaning back?

무슨일이 생기냐는 것입니다.

Everyone who's been through this --

누구나 겪는 문제이고, 제 스스로도 겪은 후

and I'm here to tell you, once you have a child at home,

말씀드리건대, 일단 아이를 낳고 나면,

your job better be really good to go back,

여러분의 직업은 정말 다시 복귀하고 싶을 정도로 좋아야 합니다.

because it's hard to leave that kid at home.

당연하게도 아이를 떼놓고 일하러 나서기란 쉽지 않기 때문이죠.

그 이유로, 일이 단조로워서도 안되고,

Your job needs to be challenging.

충분한 보상이 있어야 합니다.

It needs to be rewarding.

You need to feel like you're making a difference.

스스로 변화를 만들고 있다는 것을 느껴야만 합니다.

And if two years ago you didn't take a promotion

그래서 2년전 자신이 승진을 못했다면

and some guy next to you did,

옆 자리의 남자직원이 그 승진을 대신 했겠죠.

if three years ago you stopped looking for new opportunities,

만약 3년전

자신이 더이상의 새로운 기회를 모색하는 것을 그만두었다면,

you're going to be bored

분명 일이 따분하고 재미없을 겁니다.

because you should have kept your foot on the gas pedal.

계속 악셀을 밟고 나아갔어야 했기 때문이죠.

Don't leave before you leave.

"떠나기 전엔 떠나지 마세요."

Stay in.

머무르세요.

Keep your foot on the gas pedal,

계속 악셀을 밟으세요.

until the very day you need to leave to take a break for a child --

아이를 돌보기 위해 일을 그만둬야 하는

그날까지 멈추지 마세요.

and then make your decisions.

그리고 자신의 결정을 하세요.

너무 먼 미래까지의 계획을 일일히

Don't make decisions too far in advance,

particularly ones you're not even conscious you're making.

성급하게 미리 정하지 마세요.

My generation really, sadly,

슬프게도 저희 세대는

is not going to change the numbers at the top.

이 수치들을 바꾸지 않을겁니다.

They're just not moving.

그 자리에서 움직이지 않을겁니다.

We are not going to get to where 50 percent of the population --

저희 세대에선 인구의 반이

in my generation, there will not be 50 percent of [women]

어떤 종류의 일이든 고위층을 차지 하는 일은

at the top of any industry.

보지 못할것입니다.

하지만 우리 미래 세대는 할 수 있으리라 희망합니다.

But I'm hopeful that future generations can.

I think a world where half of our countries and our companies

세계의 반이, 그리고 기업의 반이

여성에 의해 이끌어진다면

더 좋은 세상이 되리라 생각합니다.

were run by women, would be a better world.

It's not just because people would know where the women's bathrooms are,

그때는 사람들이 여자 화장실이 어디에 있는지

정확히 알 것이기 때문만은 아닙니다.

even though that would be very helpful.

I think it would be a better world.

정말 좋은 세상이 될 것입니다.

전 두 아이가 있는데

I have two children.

I have a five-year-old son and a two-year-old daughter.

다섯살 그리고 두살난 남매입니다.

I want my son to have a choice

전 아들이 장차 직장에서건 가정에서건

to contribute fully in the workforce or at home,

충분히 자신의 능력을 기여할 기회를 갖길 바랍니다.

and I want my daughter to have the choice to not just succeed,

그리고 제 딸은 그저 남들 보다 뛰어난 사람이

되는 것이 아니라

but to be liked for her accomplishments.

딸의 능력과 성취로 인정을 받길 바랍니다.
