I heard about a high school in Chicago

سمعت عن ثانوية في شيكاغو

حيث يجب على الطلاب ان ينجحوا في عدة صفوف ليتخرجوا،

where students had to pass a certain number of courses to graduate,

and if they didn't pass a course, they got the grade "Not Yet."

و اذا لم ينجحوا في احدى هذه الصفوف فإنهم يأخذون درجة:"ليس بعد".

And I thought that was fantastic,

و فكرت بأن هذا رائع،

because if you get a failing grade, you think, I'm nothing, I'm nowhere.

لأنه اذا أخذت علامة الرسوب، ستفكر انا لاشيء، لن أصل الى اي مكان.

But if you get the grade "Not Yet",

و لكن اذا اخذت علامة: ليس بعد

you understand that you're on a learning curve.

ستفهم انك في طريق التعلم.

It gives you a path into the future.

يعطيك مسار نحو المستقبل.

"Not Yet" also gave me insight

"ليس بعد" اعطتني فطنة ايضا في حدث حاسم مسبقا في عملي،

into a critical event early in my career,

a real turning point.

I wanted to see

أردت أن أرى

how children coped with challenge and difficulty,

كيف يتعامل الاطفال مع التحديات و المصاعب،

so I gave 10-year-olds

لذا اعطيت أطفال بعمر عشر سنين

problems that were slightly too hard for them.

مشاكل كانت صعبة عليهم قليلا.

Some of them reacted in a shockingly positive way.

بعضهم تصرف بطريقة ايجابية مفاجئة.

They said things like, "I love a challenge,"

قالوا اشياء مثل، "أنا احب التحدي"،

او "تعلم، كنت اتمنى ان يكون هذا يحوي معلومات"

or, "You know, I was hoping this would be informative."

They understood that their abilities could be developed.

فهموا ان قدراتهم تستطيع ان تتطور.

They had what I call a growth mindset.

كان لديهم ما اسميه عقلية متطورة.

But other students felt it was tragic, catastrophic.

و لكن طلاب آخرون شعروا بان هذا مأساوي، مفجع،

From their more fixed mindset perspective,

من عقلياتهم الاكثر ثباتاً،

their intelligence had been up for judgment,

ذكاؤهم كان مستعدا للحكم عليهم و فشلوا.

and they failed.

Instead of luxuriating in the power of yet,

بدلا من التمتع بقوة الـ"ليس بعد"،

تمت السيطرة عليهم من قبل قوة الآن.

they were gripped in the tyranny of now.

So what do they do next?

اذا ما سيفعلوا لاحقاً؟

I'll tell you what they do next.

In one study, they told us they would probably cheat the next time

instead of studying more if they failed a test.

In another study, after a failure,

في دراسة أخرى، بعد الفشل،

they looked for someone who did worse than they did

so they could feel really good about themselves.

ليشعروا بشعور جيد تجاه انفسهم.

And in study after study, they have run from difficulty.

Scientists measured the electrical activity from the brain

as students confronted an error.

On the left, you see the fixed-mindset students.

There's hardly any activity.

They run from the error.

They don't engage with it.

But on the right, you have the students with the growth mindset,

the idea that abilities can be developed.

They engage deeply.

Their brain is on fire with yet.

They engage deeply.

They process the error.

They learn from it and they correct it.

يتعلمون منه و يصلحونه.

How are we raising our children?

كيف نربي أطفالنا؟

Are we raising them for now instead of yet?

هل نربيهم من اجل الآن عوضا عن المستقبل ؟

Are we raising kids who are obsessed with getting As?

هل نربي أطفالا مهووسين بأن يحصلوا على درجة التفوق؟

Are we raising kids who don't know how to dream big dreams?

هل نربي اطفالا لا يعرفون كيف يحلمون احلاما كبيرة؟

أكبر أهدافهم هو نيل العلامة التامة او النتيجة القادمة للفحص ؟

Their biggest goal is getting the next A, or the next test score?

And are they carrying this need for constant validation with them

و هل يحملون هذه الحاجة معهم من اجل التحقق المستمر

into their future lives?

في حياتهم المستقبلية ؟

Maybe, because employers are coming to me and saying,

ربما، لأن ارباب العمل يأتون الي و يقولون،

نحن ربينا جيلاً

"We have already raised a generation

of young workers who can't get through the day

من العمال الشباب الذي لا يستطيعون ان يقضوا يوم

without an award."

دون الحصول على جائزة.

So what can we do?

ماذا نستطيع ان نفعل؟

How can we build that bridge to yet?

كيف يمكن ان نبني هذا الجسر الى "ليس بعد"؟

Here are some things we can do.

هذه اشياء قد نستطيع فعلها.

First of all, we can praise wisely,

أولاً، يمكننا ان نمدح بحكمة، لا ان نمدح الذكاء او الموهبة.

not praising intelligence or talent.

That has failed.

التي فشلت.

Don't do that anymore.

لا تفعلوا هذا بعد الآن.

But praising the process that kids engage in,

و لكن ان نمدح العملية التي ينخرط الاولاد بها:

their effort, their strategies, their focus, their perseverance,

مجهودهم، استراتيجيتهم، تركيزهم، مثابرتهم،

their improvement.

تحسنهم.

This process praise creates kids who are hardy and resilient.

عملية المديح هذه

تصنع اطفالا أقوياء و مرنين.

There are other ways to reward yet.

هناك عدة طرق لمكافأة "ليس بعد".

We recently teamed up with game scientists

اجتمعنا مؤخرا مع علماء الالعاب

from the University of Washington

من جامعة واشنطن

to create a new online math game that rewarded yet.

لاختراع لعبة رياضيات جديدة على الانترنت التي تكافئ "ليس بعد".

In this game, students were rewarded for effort, strategy and progress.

في هذه اللعبة، الطلاب كانوا يكافؤون من اجل المجهود، الاستراتيجية و التقدم.

The usual math game

لعبة الرياضيات التقليدية

rewards you for getting answers right, right now,

تكافئك اذا حصلت على اجابات صحيحة الآن،

but this game rewarded process.

و لكن هذه اللعبة كافأت المجهود.

And we got more effort,

و حصلنا على مجهود اكثر،

استراتيجيات اكثر،

more strategies,

more engagement over longer periods of time,

اشتراك اكثر على مدى فترات طويلة من الوقت،

and more perseverance when they hit really, really hard problems.

و مثابرة أكبر عندما يواجهون مسائل صعبة جدا جدا.

Just the words "yet" or "not yet," we're finding,

و جدنا ان كلمة "ليس بعد" او"ليس الآن" فقط

تعطي الطفل ثقة أكبر،

give kids greater confidence,

give them a path into the future that creates greater persistence.

And we can actually change students' mindsets.

و نستطيع حقاً ان نغير عقليات الطلاب.

In one study, we taught them

في دراسة، علمناهم

that every time they push out of their comfort zone

انه في كل مرة يدفعون انفسهم خارج مناطق راحتهم

to learn something new and difficult,

ليتعلموا شيء جديد و صعب،

الخلايا العصبية في ادمغتهم تستطيع ان تشكل علاقات جديدة قوية،

the neurons in their brain can form new, stronger connections,

and over time, they can get smarter.

و عبر الوقت يمكن ان يصبحوا اذكى.

Look what happened: In this study,

انظر ماذا حدث: في هذه الدراسة،

students who were not taught this growth mindset

الطلاب الذين لم يتم تلقينهم هذا النضوج العقلي

continued to show declining grades over this difficult school transition,

استمروا باظهار درجات متدنية عبر هذا الانتقال المدرسي الصعب،

but those who were taught this lesson showed a sharp rebound in their grades.

و لكن اولئك الذي تعلموا هذا الدرس اظهروا تحسنا كبيرا في درجاتهم.

We have shown this now, this kind of improvement,

with thousands and thousands of kids, especially struggling students.

So let's talk about equality.

In our country, there are groups of students

But when educators create growth mindset classrooms

steeped in yet,

equality happens.

And here are just a few examples.

In one year, a kindergarten class in Harlem, New York

scored in the 95th percentile

on the national achievement test.

Many of those kids could not hold a pencil

when they arrived at school.

In one year,

fourth-grade students in the South Bronx, way behind,

became the number one fourth-grade class in the state of New York

on the state math test.

In a year, to a year and a half,

Native American students in a school on a reservation

went from the bottom of their district to the top,

and that district included affluent sections of Seattle.

So the Native kids outdid the Microsoft kids.

This happened because the meaning of effort and difficulty were transformed.

Before, effort and difficulty

قبل هذا، الجهد و الصعوبة

made them feel dumb, made them feel like giving up,

كانت تجعلهم يشعرون بالغباء، يشعرون بالاستسلام،

but now, effort and difficulty,

لكن الآن، الجهد والصعوبة،

that's when their neurons are making new connections,

stronger connections.

That's when they're getting smarter.

I received a letter recently from a 13-year-old boy.

He said, "Dear Professor Dweck,

I appreciate that your writing is based on solid scientific research,

and that's why I decided to put it into practice.

أضع جهدا اكبر في حل واجباتي،

I put more effort into my schoolwork,

في علاقتي مع عائلتي،

into my relationship with my family,

و علاقتي مع الاطفال الآخرين في المدرسة،

and into my relationship with kids at school,

and I experienced great improvement in all of those areas.

و اختبرت تحسنا هائلاً في كل هذه النواحي.

I now realize I've wasted most of my life."

الآن أدرك انني اضعت أغلب عمري." (ضحك)

Let's not waste any more lives,

هيا لا نضيع اي اعمار أكثر،

لأنه متى علمنا

because once we know

that abilities are capable of such growth,

ان القدرات قابلة للتطور،

it becomes a basic human right for children, all children,

يصبح هذا حق اساسي انساني للاطفال، لكل الاطفال،

ليعيشوا في أماكن تخلق هذا التطور،

to live in places that create that growth,

to live in places filled with "yet".

للعيش في أماكن مليئة بـ "ليس بعد".
