The power of yet.

"아직"의 힘.

I heard about a high school in Chicago

시카고의 한 고등학교는

졸업 하려면 일정 수의 과목을 통과해야 하는데

where students had to pass a certain number of courses to graduate,

and if they didn't pass a course, they got the grade "Not Yet."

통과 못한 과목은 "아직" 이란 학점을 받는답니다.

And I thought that was fantastic,

정말 멋진 일이죠.

because if you get a failing grade, you think, I'm nothing, I'm nowhere.

"낙제" 를 받은 학생은 스스로 형편없다고 느끼겠지만

But if you get the grade "Not Yet",

낙제 대신 "아직" 이란 학점을 받은 학생은

you understand that you're on a learning curve.

자신이 배우는 과정 중이란 걸 이해할 겁니다.

It gives you a path into the future.

앞으로 나 있는 길을 보여 주는 것이지요.

"Not Yet" also gave me insight

"아직" 은 제 직업 진로의 초기에 한 중대한 사건에서 전환점이 되는

into a critical event early in my career,

a real turning point.

깨달음을 주었습니다.

I wanted to see

당시 저는 어린 아이들이

how children coped with challenge and difficulty,

어려움과 도전에 어떻게 대응하는지 연구하고 있었습니다.

so I gave 10-year-olds

10살짜리 아이들에게

problems that were slightly too hard for them.

풀기에 아주 약간 어려운 문제들을 주었습니다.

Some of them reacted in a shockingly positive way.

어떤 아이들은 충격적일 정도로 긍정적으로 반응했습니다.

They said things like, "I love a challenge,"

이런 아이들은 말했어요. "전 어려운 문제가 좋아요."

"이 문제가 저한테 유익했으면 좋겠다고 생각했어요."

or, "You know, I was hoping this would be informative."

They understood that their abilities could be developed.

이 아이들은 자신의 능력이 개발될 수 있음을 알고 있었어요.

They had what I call a growth mindset.

제가 "성장의 사고방식"이라 부르는 사고방식을 갖고 있었죠.

But other students felt it was tragic, catastrophic.

하지만 다른 학생들은 비참하고 비극적인 기분에 빠졌습니다.

From their more fixed mindset perspective,

좀 더 경직된 사고 방식과 시각을 가진 이 아이들에게

their intelligence had been up for judgment,

이 상황은 자신의 지능이 시험 받았고 거기에서 자신은 실패한 것이었습니다.

and they failed.

Instead of luxuriating in the power of yet,

"아직"의 힘에 취하며 즐기기 보다는

그들은 "지금"의 폭정에 사로 잡혔습니다.

they were gripped in the tyranny of now.

So what do they do next?

그래서 어떻게 했을까요?

I'll tell you what they do next.

이 아이들이 어떻게 헀는지 말씀드리죠.

In one study, they told us they would probably cheat the next time

한 연구에서, 이 아이들은 자신이 어떤 시험에서 낙제한다면

공부를 더 하기보다는 부정행위를 하겠다고 말했습니다.

instead of studying more if they failed a test.

In another study, after a failure,

다른 연구에서, 이 부류의 아이들은

they looked for someone who did worse than they did

so they could feel really good about themselves.

자신보다 더 못한 아이들을 찾았습니다.

And in study after study, they have run from difficulty.

매 연구마다, 이런 아이들은 어려움에서 도피했습니다.

Scientists measured the electrical activity from the brain

과학자들은 학생들이 자신의 실수에 당면할 때 일어나는

뇌 안의 전기 활동을 측정했습니다.

as students confronted an error.

On the left, you see the fixed-mindset students.

왼쪽에 보시는 게 경직된 사고 방식의 학생들입니다.

There's hardly any activity.

뇌 내 활동이 거의 없죠.

They run from the error.

이들은 자신의 실수에서 도피하려고 합니다.

실수를 살펴보고 생각해보지 않는거죠.

They don't engage with it.

But on the right, you have the students with the growth mindset,

오른쪽에 보시는 것이 성장의 사고방식을 가진 학생들이죠.

the idea that abilities can be developed.

자신의 능력이 점점 발전할 수 있다는 마음가짐이요.

They engage deeply.

이들은 깊이 사고합니다.

Their brain is on fire with yet.

"아직"의 가능성으로 뇌가 활발해 지는 것이지요.

They engage deeply.

골똘히 생각하고

실수를 분석합니다.

They process the error.

They learn from it and they correct it.

실수를 통해 배우고, 고칩니다.

How are we raising our children?

우리는 우리 아이들을 어떻게 키우고 있습니까?

Are we raising them for now instead of yet?

"아직"대신 "지금" 의 방식으로 키우고 있습니까?

Are we raising kids who are obsessed with getting As?

A 학점에 집착하는 아이들을 키우고 있나요?

Are we raising kids who don't know how to dream big dreams?

큰 꿈은 꿀 줄 모르는 아이들로 키우고 있나요?

다음 시험에서 A를 받는 게 최고의 목표인 아이들을요.

Their biggest goal is getting the next A, or the next test score?

And are they carrying this need for constant validation with them

이렇게 끊임없이 인정 받아야 되는 의존증이

into their future lives?

어른이 되서도 남아 있을까요?

Maybe, because employers are coming to me and saying,

그럴지도 모릅니다. 회사의 고용인들이 제게 하는 말이

이미 현 시대 일터의 젊은이들은

"We have already raised a generation

of young workers who can't get through the day

매일 어떤 식으로라든 보상이 없으면

without an award."

하루도 버티지 못한다고 합니다.

So what can we do?

그럼 우리가 무엇을 할 수 있을까요?

How can we build that bridge to yet?

"아직"으로 향하는 다리를 어떻게 세울 수 있을까요?

Here are some things we can do.

몇가지 제안을 하지요.

First of all, we can praise wisely,

가장 첫번째는 지혜로운 칭찬입니다. 지능이나 재능을 칭찬하는 방식은

not praising intelligence or talent.

That has failed.

이미 실패했습니다.

Don't do that anymore.

그런 칭찬은 이제 하지 마세요.

But praising the process that kids engage in,

대신 아이들이 거치는 과정을,

their effort, their strategies, their focus, their perseverance,

그들의 노력, 계획, 집중, 인내,

their improvement.

향상됨을 칭찬해 주세요.

This process praise creates kids who are hardy and resilient.

이런 "과정 칭찬" 은

어려움에 쉽게 굴하지 않는 강인한 아이들을 길러냅니다.

There are other ways to reward yet.

"아직" 을 보상하는 다른 방법들이 있어요.

We recently teamed up with game scientists

저희는 최근 워싱턴 대학교의

from the University of Washington

게임 과학자들과 협력하여

to create a new online math game that rewarded yet.

"아직"을 보상하는 온라인 수학 게임을 만들었습니다.

In this game, students were rewarded for effort, strategy and progress.

이 게임에서 학생들은 노력, 계획, 향상으로 상을 받습니다.

The usual math game

평범한 수학 게임은

rewards you for getting answers right, right now,

지금 당장 맞는 답을 내었을 때 보상을 받지만

but this game rewarded process.

이 게임은 과정에 대해 상을 주고 있습니다.

And we got more effort,

이 게임에서 학생들은 더 많이 노력하고

더 많은 전략을 세웠고,

more strategies,

more engagement over longer periods of time,

더 능동적으로 더 오랜 시간 참여하고,

and more perseverance when they hit really, really hard problems.

정말 어려운 문제를 만났을 때도 더 많은 끈기를 보여주었습니다.

Just the words "yet" or "not yet," we're finding,

"아직" 혹은 "아직은 아닌" 이란 말 자체만으로도

아이들은 더 많은 자신감을 얻었고

give kids greater confidence,

give them a path into the future that creates greater persistence.

포기하지 않고 앞으로 나아갈 수 있는 길을 보게 되었습니다.

And we can actually change students' mindsets.

학생들의 사고 방식을 바꾸는 것은 실제로 가능합니다.

In one study, we taught them

또 다른 연구에서, 우리는 학생들에게

that every time they push out of their comfort zone

그들이 무언가 새롭고 어려운 것을 배우기 위해

to learn something new and difficult,

익숙하고 안락한 영역을 벗어나 탐구할 때

뇌 안의 신경 세포가 더 강한 새로운 연관 고리들을 만들면서

the neurons in their brain can form new, stronger connections,

and over time, they can get smarter.

Look what happened: In this study,

students who were not taught this growth mindset

성장의 사고방식을 가르치지 않은 학생들은

continued to show declining grades over this difficult school transition,

학교가 바뀌면서 점점 성적이 떨어졌습니다.

but those who were taught this lesson showed a sharp rebound in their grades.

하지만 성장의 사고방식을 배운 아이들은 성적이 떨어져도 금방 회복했습니다.

We have shown this now, this kind of improvement,

수천 수만명의 학생에게서 이같은 향상 결과가 나타났습니다.

with thousands and thousands of kids, especially struggling students.

특히 공부를 힘들게 느꼈던 학생들에게서요.

그럼 이제 평등에 대해 얘기해 볼까요.

So let's talk about equality.

In our country, there are groups of students

미국에서는 특정 부류의 학생들이

who chronically underperform,

만성적으로 낮은 학업 성취도를 보입니다.

for example, children in inner cities,

예를 들면 사회 문제가 많은 도심 지역,

or children on Native American reservations.

혹은 원주민 거주 지역의 아이들이요.

And they've done so poorly for so long

이들은 너무 오랫동안 너무 뒤쳐져서 많은 이들이 불가피하게 생각합니다.

that many people think it's inevitable.

But when educators create growth mindset classrooms

하지만 "아직" 이 살아있는 성장의 사고방식의 교실에서는

steeped in yet,

equality happens.

And here are just a few examples.

In one year, a kindergarten class in Harlem, New York

scored in the 95th percentile

Many of those kids could not hold a pencil

when they arrived at school.

In one year,

fourth-grade students in the South Bronx, way behind,

on the state math test.

In a year, to a year and a half,

Native American students in a school on a reservation

went from the bottom of their district to the top,

and that district included affluent sections of Seattle.

같은 학구에는 시애틀의 부촌도 있었습니다.

So the Native kids outdid the Microsoft kids.

원주민 아이들이 마이크로소프트 직원 자녀들을 이겼죠.

이런 결과들은 "노력"과 "어려움"의 의미가 변화함으로 나타날 수 있었죠.

This happened because the meaning of effort and difficulty were transformed.

Before, effort and difficulty

이전에는 노력과 어려움은

made them feel dumb, made them feel like giving up,

학생들 스스로 멍청하다고 느끼게, 포기하고 싶게 했어요.

but now, effort and difficulty,

하지만 이제 노력과 어려움은

that's when their neurons are making new connections,

머릿속의 뇌세포가 새롭고 더 강한 연결 고리를

stronger connections.

만드는 걸로 인식됩니다.

That's when they're getting smarter.

노력할 때, 문제가 어려울 때가 똑똑해지고 있는 때인거에요.

I received a letter recently from a 13-year-old boy.

최근 한 13살짜리 남학생이 제게 이런 편지를 보냈습니다.

"드웩 교수님께,

He said, "Dear Professor Dweck,

저는 교수님의 책이 철저한 과학적 연구 결과라고 생각되어서

I appreciate that your writing is based on solid scientific research,

제 스스로 실행 해 보기로 했습니다.

and that's why I decided to put it into practice.

저는 학교공부에,

I put more effort into my schoolwork,

가족들과의 관계에,

into my relationship with my family,

학교 친구들과의 관계에 더 많은 노력을 투여했고

and into my relationship with kids at school,

and I experienced great improvement in all of those areas.

이 모든 분야에서 상당히 향상했음을 경험했습니다.

I now realize I've wasted most of my life."

저는 지금껏 제 인생 대부분을 낭비했다는 걸 깨달았어요."

Let's not waste any more lives,

더 이상 누구의 삶도 낭비하지 맙시다.

왜냐면 우리의 능력이

because once we know

that abilities are capable of such growth,

이렇게 성장할 수 있음을 깨닫고 나면

it becomes a basic human right for children, all children,

모든 아이들이 그런 성장을 창조해주는

"아직" 으로 가득 찬 환경에서 자라는 것이

to live in places that create that growth,

to live in places filled with "yet".

인간으로서 기본 권리라는 것을 알게 되기 때문입니다.
