Because I truly believe that humanity is a lot like me.

It's an aging movie star,

grappling with all the newness around itself,

wondering whether it got it right in the first place,

and still trying to find a way

I was born in a refugee colony in the capital city of India, New Delhi.

මම ඉපදුනේ ඉන්දියාවේ අගනුවර වන නව දිල්ලියේ තිබුණු සරණාගත භූමියක.

And my father was a freedom fighter.

My mother was, well, just a fighter like mothers are.

And much like the original homo sapiens,

When I was in my early 20s,

I do remember the night my father died,

and I remember the driver of a neighbor who was driving us to the hospital.

He mumbled something about "dead people don't tip so well"

and walked away into the dark.

And I was only 14 then,

And I thought about it and realized, and I said to my mom,

So from that night onwards,

much akin to humanity in its adolescence,

I learned the crude tools of survival.

And the framework of life was very, very simple then, to be honest.

You know, you just ate what you got

Where was I?

We relied on systems

You went wherever life took you for work,

and people were mostly welcoming of you.

Migration was a term then

Work began to define you at that time

in an overwhelmingly equalizing manner,

and all the systems started to feel less reliable to me,

almost too thick to hold on

to the diversity of mankind

and the human need to progress and grow.

Ideas were flowing with more freedom and speed.

And I experienced the miracle of human innovation and cooperation,

and my own creativity,

when supported by the resourcefulness of this collective endeavor,

Four years ago,

my lovely wife Gauri and me decided to have a third child.

In this new world,

It really did.

Like you notice, nobody could make any sense of what was happening except me,

I even tried to reconstruct my identity on the social media

like everyone else does.

I thought if I put on philosophical tweets out there

people will think I'm with it,

but some of the responses I got from those tweets

හරිම ව්‍යාකුල කෙටි යෙදුම් මට තේරුනේ නැති. ඔබ දන්නවාද?

"Adidas," somebody wrote back to one of my more thought-provoking tweets

මගේ අදහස් උද්ධීපනය කරන ට්විටර් පණිවිඩයකට කෙනෙක් ලියලා තිබුනා, "අඩිඩාස්" කියලා.

and I was wondering why would you name a sneaker,

මම කල්පනා කළා ඇයි සපත්තුවක් ගැන කියන්නේ කියලා.

I mean, why would you write back the name of a sneaker to me?

මම කිවුවේ, ඇයි මට අනිත් පැත්තට සපත්තුවක නමක් කියන්නේ?

And I asked my 16-year-old daughter, and she enlightened me.

ඉතින් මම මගේ අවුරුදු 16යේ දුවගෙන් ඇහුවා, ඇය මට කියලා දුන්නා

"Adidas" now means "All day I dream about sex."

"අඩිඩාස්" කියන්නේ "දවසෙම මම සිහින දකින්නේ ලිංගිකත්වය ගැන".

So I wrote back, "WTF" in bold to Mr. Adidas,

thanking secretly that some acronyms and things won't change at all.

But here we are.

ඒත් අපි ඉන්නේ මෙතන.

I am 51 years old, like I told you,

මට අවුරුදු 51යි, ඔයාලට කිවුවා වගේ,

and mind-numbing acronyms notwithstanding,

කොහොම උනත් මනස විකෘති කරන කෙටි යෙදුම් අතරේ.

I just want to tell you

මට ඔයාලාට කියන්න ඕනේ වුනේ

if there has been a momentous time for humanity to exist,

මනුෂ්‍යත්වයට පවතින්න වැදගත්ම වෙලාවක් තිබුනානම්

it is now,

ඒ දැනුයි.

because the present you is brave.

මොකද වර්තමානයේ ඔබ නිර්භීතයි.

The present you is hopeful.

වර්තමානයේ ඔබ පැතුම් සහගතයි.

The present you is innovative and resourceful,

වර්තමානයේ ඔබ නව්‍යයි, විචක්ෂනශීලියි.

and of course, the present you is annoyingly indefinable.

සහ ඇත්තෙන්ම වර්තමානයේ ඔබ කරදරකාරී ලෙස අසීමිතයි.

And in this spell-binding,

මේ සිත් වසඟ කරවනසුලු

imperfect moment of existence,

පැවැත්මේ අසම්පුර්ණ මොහොතක

feeling a little brave just before I came here,

මම මෙතනට එන්න ටිකකට කලින් නිර්භීතව

I decided to take a good, hard look at my face.

මගේ මුහුණ දිහා හොඳින් බලන්න හිතුවා.

And I realized that I'm beginning to look more and more

එතකොටයි මට තේරුනේ මම ටිකෙන් ටික මැඩම් ටුසාඩ්ගේ කෞතුකාගාරයේ

like the wax statue of me at Madame Tussaud's.

තියෙන මගේ ඉටි රූපය වගේ වෙන්න යනවා කියලා.

Yeah, and in that moment of realization,

ඔව්, ඒක දැනුනු මොහොතේ

I asked the most central and pertinent question to humanity and me:

මම ඇහුවා මනුෂ්‍යත්වයටත් මටත් තියෙන වඩාත් ප්‍රධානම උචිතම ප්‍රශ්නය.

Do I need to fix my face?

මම මගේ මුහුණ හදාගන්න ඕනෙද?

Really. I'm an actor, like I told you,

ඇත්තෙන්ම මම නළුවෙක් මම ඔයාලට කිවුවා වගේ.

a modern expression of human creativity.

මිනිස් නිර්මානශීලිත්වයේ නූතන ප්‍රකාශනයක්.

The land I come from

මගේ භුමිය

is the source of inexplicable but very simple spirituality.

තේරුම් කිරීම අපහසු ඒත් බොහොම සරල ආධ්‍යාත්මයේ නිජබිමයි.

In its immense generosity,

එහි ඉමහත් පරිත්‍යාගශීලිත්වය නිසා

India decided somehow

ඉන්දියාව තීරණය කළා කොහොමහරි

that I, the Muslim son of a broke freedom fighter

නිදහස් සටන්කරුවෙකුගේ මුස්ලිම් පුතෙක් වුනු මාව,

who accidentally ventured into the business of selling dreams,

වැරදීමකින්, සිහින අලෙවි කරන ව්‍යාපාරයට අතගැසූ මාව,

should become its king of romance,

එහි ආදරයේ රජු බවට පත් කරන්න.

the "Badhshah of Bollywood,"

"බොලිවුඩයේ සක්විති රජු",

the greatest lover the country has ever seen ...

මේ භුමිය මෙතෙක් දැක ඇති ශ්‍රේෂ්ඨතම ආදරවන්තයා,

with this face.

මේ මුහුණත් එක්ක.

Yeah.

ඔව්.

Which has alternately been described as ugly, unconventional,

තවත් මේ මුහුණම, කැත, සාම්ප්‍රදායික නැති, පුදුමසහගත ලෙස,

and strangely, not chocolatey enough.

රසවත්ද නැති කියලා නම් කර තිබුනා.

The people of this ancient land

මේ පුරාණ භුමියේ මිනිසුන්,

embraced me in their limitless love,

මාව ඔවුන්ගේ අසීමිත ආදරයෙන් වැළඳගත්තා.

and I've learned from these people

මම මේ මිනිසුන්ගෙන් ඉගෙන ගත්තා,

that neither power nor poverty

බලයටවත් දුප්පත්කමටවත් ඔබේ ජීවිතය වැඩියෙන්

can make your life more magical

ආශ්චර්යවත් හෝ අඩුවෙන් කරදරකාරී හෝ

or less tortuous.

කරන්න බෑ කියලා.

I've learned from the people of my country

මම මගේ රටේ මිනිස්සුන්ගෙන් ඉගෙන ගත්තා.

that the dignity of a life,

ජීවිතයක, මනුෂ්‍යයෙකුගේ,

a human being, a culture, a religion, a country

සම්ප්‍රදායක, ආගමක, රටක ගරුත්වය

actually resides in its ability

සැබෑවටම පවතින්නේ එහි

for grace and compassion.

කරුණාවන්ත වීමේ හැකියාව මතයි.

I've learned that whatever moves you,

මම ඉගෙනගෙන තියෙනවා ඔබව සසල කළ හැකි

whatever urges you to create, to build,

යමක් නිර්මාණය කරන්නට පෙළඹවිය හැකි

whatever keeps you from failing,

ඔබව වැටෙන්න දෙන්නේ නැතුව තියන

whatever helps you survive,

ඔබට ජීවත් වෙන්න උදවු කරන දෙය

is perhaps the oldest and the simplest emotion known to mankind,

මිනිස් වර්ගයා දන්නා පැරණිම සහ සරලතම හැගීම විය හැකියි.

and that is love.

ඒ තමයි ආදරය.

A mystic poet from my land famously wrote,

මගේ භුමියේ සිටි එක් ගුප්ත කවියෙකුගේ ප්‍රසිද්ධ කියමනක් තමයි,

(හින්දි බසින් කවියක්)

(කවිය අවසන් වෙයි)

Which loosely translates into that whatever --

එය සරලව පරිවර්තනය වෙන්නේ,

yeah, if you know Hindi, please clap, yeah.

ඔව් ඔබ හින්දි දන්නවානම් අත්පොලසන් දෙන්න,

It's very difficult to remember.

හරි අමාරුයි මතක තියාගන්න.

Which loosely translates into actually saying

එය සරලව පරිවර්තනය වෙනවා ඇත්තටම,

that all the books of knowledge that you might read

ඔබ දැනුම අඩංගු පොත් සියල්ල කියවලා

and then go ahead and impart your knowledge

ඔබ ඒ දැනුම

through innovation, through creativity, through technology,

නව නිපැයුම් මගින්, නිර්මානශිලීත්වය මගින්, තාක්ෂණය මගින් යෙදෙවුවත්,

but mankind will never be the wiser about its future

මනුෂ්‍ය වර්ගයා කවදාවත් ඔහුගේ අනාගතය ගැන ඥානවන්ත නොවේවි,

unless it is coupled with a sense of love and compassion for their fellow beings.

එයත් සමඟ තමන්ගේ වර්ගයා ගැන ආදරය, කරුණාවත් මුසු වී නැත්නම්.

The two and a half alphabets which form the word "प्रेम,"

"ප්‍රේම්" කියන වචනය නිර්මාණය කරන හෝඩි දෙකහමාර,

which means "love,"

ඒකියන්නේ ආදරය,

if you are able to understand that

ඔබට එය තේරුම්ගත හැකිනම්,

and practice it,

එය පුහුණු විය හැකිනම්,

that itself is enough to enlighten mankind.

එපමණක් ඇති මනුෂ්‍ය වර්ගයාට ප්‍රඥයාව ලබාදෙන්න.

So I truly believe the future "you"

මම ඇත්තටම විශ්වාස කරනවා අනාගතයේ "ඔබ"

has to be a you that loves.

ආදරය දෙන කෙනෙක් විය යුතුයි.

Otherwise it will cease to flourish.

එසේ නොවේනම් එය සමෘධිමත් නොවේවි.

It will perish in its own self-absorption.

එය ඉපදුනුතැනම මැරිලා යාවී.

So you may use your power

ඉතින් ඔබට පුළුවන් ඔබේ බලය

to build walls

පාවිච්චි කරලා තාප්ප බඳින්න,

and keep people outside,

මිනිසුන් වෙන්කරලා තියන්න.

or you may use it to break barriers and welcome them in.

එහෙම නැත්තන් ඔබට පුළුවන් එය පාවිච්චි කර, බාධක බිඳ ඔවුන් සාදරයෙන් පිළිගන්න.

You may use your faith

ඔබට ඔබේ විශ්වාසය භාවිතා කරන්න පුළුවන්

to make people afraid

මිනිසුන්ව බියගන්වන්න.

and terrify them into submission,

බියගන්වා ඔවුන්ව ඉදිරියට යවන්න.

or you can use it to give courage to people

නැත්තන් එය භාවිතා කරන්න පුළුවන් ඔවුන්ට ධෛර්යය දෙන්න

so they rise to the greatest heights of enlightenment.

ජීවිතයේ ඉහළම තැන්වලට යන්න.

You can use your energy

ඔබට ඔබේ ශක්තිය පාවිච්චි කරන්න පුළුවන්

to build nuclear bombs and spread the darkness of destruction,

රසායනික බෝම්බ සාදා විනාශයේ අඳුර පතුරුවන්න.

or you can use it to spread the joy of light to millions.

නැත්තන් එය භාවිතා කරන්න පුළුවන් මිලියන ගණනක් දෙනාට එළිය ලබාදෙන්න.

You may filthy up the oceans callously and cut down all the forests.

ඔබට පුළුවන් අසංවේදීව සාගරය අපවිත්‍ර කරන්න, ගස් කපලා වනාන්තර විනාශ කරන්න.

You can destroy the ecology,

ඔබට විනාශකරන්න පුළුවන් පරිසර පද්ධතිය

or turn to them with love

නැත්තන් ඔවුන් දිහා ආදරයෙන් බලා

and regenerate life from the waters and trees.

ජලයෙන් සහ ගස්වලින් නැවත ජීවය නිර්මාණය කරන්න.

You may land on Mars

ඔබට පුළුවන් අඟහරු ලෝකයට ගිහින්

and build armed citadels,

එහි සන්නද්ධ බලකොටු තනන්න.

or you may look for life-forms and species to learn from and respect.

නැත්තන් ඔබට හොයන්න පුළුවන් ජීවය සහ එයින් යමක් ඉගෙනගන්න, ගෞරව කරන්න.

And you can use all the moneys we all have earned

ඔබට පුළුවන් ඔබ ඉපයූ ධනය පාවිච්චිකර

to wage futile wars

නිරර්ථක යුද්ධවලට සහය දෙන්න,

and give guns in the hands of little children

පුංච් ළමයි අතට තුවක්කු දෙන්න

to kill each other with,

එකිනෙකා මරාගන්න.

or you can use it

නැත්තන් පුළුවන් ඒවායින්

to make more food

වැඩිපුර කෑම හදලා

to fill their stomachs with.

ඔවුන්ගේ බඩ පුරවන්න.

My country has taught me

මගේ රට මට උගන්වලා තියෙනවා

the capacity for a human being to love is akin to godliness.

මනුෂ්‍යයෙක්ට ආදරය කරන්න ඇති හැකියාව භාක්තිවන්තකමට සමානයි කියලා.

It shines forth in a world

එය හැම අතම බබලනවා,

which civilization, I think, already has tampered too much with.

ශිෂ්ටාචාරය දැනටමත් ප්‍රමාණයට වඩා පළුදු වුනු ලෝකයක.

In the last few days, the talks here, the wonderful people

පහුගිය දවස්වල, මෙහි තිබුණු දේශන, ඇවිත්

coming and showing their talent,

තම හැකියා පෙන්වූ ලස්සන මිනිසුන්

talking about individual achievements, the innovation, the technology,

තමන් ලැබූ ජයග්‍රහණ, නව නිර්මාණ, තාක්ෂණය ගැන කතාකරන,

the sciences, the knowledge we are gaining by being here

අපි මෙතැනදී ලබන විද්‍යාව සහ දැනුම,

in the presence of TED Talks and all of you

TED දේශනවලදී සහ ඔබ සැවොම,

are reasons enough for us to celebrate the future "us."

අනාගතයේ "අපි" සැමරීමට ඇතිතරම් වන හේතුයි.

But within that celebration

එත් ඒ සැමරීම තුල

the quest to cultivate our capacity for love and compassion

අප තුල ආදරය සහ කරුණාව රෝපණය කරන ගමන

has to assert itself, has to assert itself,

පෙනෙන්නට තියෙන්න ඕනේ. පෙනෙන්නට තියෙන්න ඕනේ.

just as equally.

ඒහා සමානවම.

So I believe the future "you"

ඉතින් මම විශ්වාසකරනවා අනාගතයේ "ඔබ"

is an infinite you.

අසීමිතයි.

It's called a chakra in India, like a circle.

ඒකට ඉන්දියාවේදී කියන්නේ චක්‍රය කියලා, රවුම වගේ.

It ends where it begins from to complete itself.

එය නවතින්නේ එය පටන්ගන්න තැනදීමයි, ගමන සම්පුර්ණ කරන්න.

A you that perceives time and space differently

කාලයත් අවකාශයත් වෙන්කර හඳුනාගතහැකි ඔබට

understands both

තේරුම්ගත හැකියි

your unimaginable

ඔබගේ ඇදහිය නොහැකි,

and fantastic importance

ආකර්ශනීය වැදගත්කම

and your complete unimportance in the larger context of the universe.

සහ මේ අති විශාල විශ්වය හා සලකන විට ඔබගේ සම්පුර්ණ නොවැදගත්කම යන දෙකම.

A you that returns back

මනුෂ්‍යත්වයේ සැබෑ අහිංසක කමට

to the original innocence of humanity,

ඔබට නැවත ආ හැකියි.

which loves from the purity of heart,

හදවතින්ම නොකැළැල්ව ආදරය කළ හැකියි.

which sees from the eyes of truth,

සත්‍යයේ ඇස් දෙකෙන් ලෝකය දැකිය හැකියි.

which dreams from the clarity of an untampered mind.

නොකැළැල් මනසක පැහැදිලි බවින් සිහින දැකිය හැකියි.

The future "you" has to be

අනාගතයේ "ඔබ"

like an aging movie star

තමන් සමඟ සම්පුර්ණයෙන්ම

who has been made to believe that there is a possibility

ආදරයෙන් බැඳී සිටින ලෝකයක් තිබිය හැකියි

of a world which is completely,

කියන විශ්වාසය තියාගෙන ඉන්න

wholly, self-obsessively

වයසට යන සිනමා තරුවක් වගේ,

in love with itself.

විය යුතුයි.

A world -- really, it has to be a you

ලෝකයක් -- ඇත්තටම, ඒ ඔබ විය යුතුයි

to create a world

තමන් තමන්ගේ හොඳම ආදරවන්තයා වන

which is its own best lover.

ලෝකයක් බිහි කරන.

That I believe, ladies and gentlemen,

මම විශ්වාස කරනවා නෝනාවරුනි මහත්වරුනි,

should be the future "you."

ඒ තමයි අනාගතයේ "ඔබ" විය යුත්තේ.
