I was born in a refugee colony in the capital city of India, New Delhi.

So from that night onwards,

And I asked my 16-year-old daughter, and she enlightened me.

In its immense generosity,

அவர்களூக்கு மகத்தான தாராள மனப்பான்மை

India decided somehow

இல்லையெனில், என் இந்திய நாடு

that I, the Muslim son of a broke freedom fighter

நலிந்த சுதந்திர போராளியின் முஸ்லிம் மகனை

who accidentally ventured into the business of selling dreams,

தற்செயலாக கனவுகளை விற்க துணிந்தவனை

should become its king of romance,

காதல் நாயகனாக

the "Badhshah of Bollywood,"

"பாலிவுட்டின் பத்ஷா," என

the greatest lover the country has ever seen ...

நாட்டின் மிகப் பெரிய காதலனாக

with this face.

இந்த முகத்தை எப்படி ஏற்றது

Which has alternately been described as ugly, unconventional,

The people of this ancient land

that neither power nor poverty

can make your life more magical

I've learned from the people of my country

ஒரு வாழ்க்கையின் கண்ணியம், மனித கலாச்சாரம்,

that the dignity of a life,

ஒரு மதம், ஒரு நாடு

a human being, a culture, a religion, a country

உண்மையில் கருணை மற்றும் இரக்கத்தை

actually resides in its ability

பொதிந்திருக்கும் திறனில் வாழ்கிறது

for grace and compassion.

என அறிந்து கொண்டேன்

I've learned that whatever moves you,

உங்களை உருக வைக்க

whatever urges you to create, to build,

உருவாக்க, கட்டமைக்க,

whatever keeps you from failing,

தோல்வியடையாமல் தடுக்க

whatever helps you survive,

நீங்கள் உயிர்வாழ உதவுவது

is perhaps the oldest and the simplest emotion known to mankind,

மனிதகுலத்தின் பழைய எளிய உணர்ச்சி மட்டுமே

and that is love.

A mystic poet from my land famously wrote,

It's very difficult to remember.

நினைவில் கொள்வது மிக கடினம்

Which loosely translates into actually saying

அது சொல்வது

that all the books of knowledge that you might read

புத்தகங்கள் படித்தாலும்

and then go ahead and impart your knowledge

கண்டுபிடிப்பு, படைப்பாற்றல், தொழில்நுட்பம் மூலமும்,

through innovation, through creativity, through technology,

அறிவை பகிர்ந்தாலும் சக மனிதர்களிடம்

but mankind will never be the wiser about its future

காதலையும் இரக்கத்தையும் இணைக்காவிட்டால்

unless it is coupled with a sense of love and compassion for their fellow beings.

மனித இனம் எதிர்காலத்தில் மேன்மை அடையாது

The two and a half alphabets which form the word "प्रेम,"

"ப்ரேம்" என்ற இரண்டரை எழுத்துக்களின்

which means "love,"

பொருள் "அன்பு,"

if you are able to understand that

நீங்கள் அதை புரிந்து கொண்டு

and practice it,

பயிற்சி செய்தால்

that itself is enough to enlighten mankind.

மனிதகுலத்தை அறிவூட்ட. அதுவே போதும்

So I truly believe the future "you"

எனவே எதிர்கால "நீங்கள்"

has to be a you that loves.

உங்களை விரும்புமாறு இருக்க வேண்டும்.

Otherwise it will cease to flourish.

இல்லையெனில் தன்னிலையிலேயே

It will perish in its own self-absorption.

தன் வளர்ச்சியை நிறுத்தி விடும்

So you may use your power

எனவே நீங்கள் உங்கள் சக்தியால்

to build walls

சுவர்கள் கட்டி

and keep people outside,

மக்களை தடுக்கலாம்

or you may use it to break barriers and welcome them in.

அல்லது அவர்களுக்கு பாலமாக்கி வரவேற்கலாம்

You may use your faith

உங்கள் நம்பிக்கையை பயன்படுத்தி

to make people afraid

மக்களை பயப்முறுத்தி

and terrify them into submission,

சரணடைய செய்யலாம்

or you can use it to give courage to people

அல்லது மக்களுக்கு தைரியம் கொடுத்து

so they rise to the greatest heights of enlightenment.

அவர்களின் அறிவொளியை உயர்த்தலாம்

You can use your energy

உங்கள் ஆற்றலைப் பயன்படுத்தி

to build nuclear bombs and spread the darkness of destruction,

அணு குண்டுகளை உருவாக்கி அழிவின் இருளைப் பரப்பலாம்

or you can use it to spread the joy of light to millions.

அல்லது திரளான மக்களுக்கு மகிழ்ச்சி ஒளி கொடுக்கலாம்

You may filthy up the oceans callously and cut down all the forests.

நீங்கள் கடல்களை மாசுபடுத்தி காடுகளை வெட்டி

You can destroy the ecology,

சூழலியல் அழிக்க முடியும்

or turn to them with love

அல்லது அவைகளை அன்போடு பராமரித்து

and regenerate life from the waters and trees.

நீர் மற்றும் மரங்களிலிருந்து வாழ்வை மீட்கலாம்

You may land on Mars

நீங்கள் செவ்வாய் கிரகத்தில் இறங்கி

and build armed citadels,

போர் கோட்டைகளை உருவாக்கலாம்

or you may look for life-forms and species to learn from and respect.

And you can use all the moneys we all have earned

to wage futile wars

or you can use it

to make more food

அவர்களின் வயிற்றை நிரப்ப

to fill their stomachs with.

My country has taught me

என் நாடு எனக்குக் கற்றுக் கொடுத்தது

the capacity for a human being to love is akin to godliness.

ஒரு மனிதனை நேசிப்பது தெய்வபக்திக்கு ஒத்ததாகும்.

It shines forth in a world

நாகரிகம் மோசமாக்கிவிட்ட உலகில்

which civilization, I think, already has tampered too much with.

அன்பு மட்டுமே நிலையாகி பிரகாசிக்கிறது

In the last few days, the talks here, the wonderful people

கடந்த சில நாட்களில், இந்த அற்புதமான மக்களின்

coming and showing their talent,

திறமைகள், தனிப்பட்ட சாதனைகள்,

talking about individual achievements, the innovation, the technology,

கண்டுபிடிப்பு, தொழில்நுட்பம், அறிவியல் பற்றிய

the sciences, the knowledge we are gaining by being here

TED பேச்சுக்களே நமக்கு பல விஷயங்களை கற்று கொடுத்துள்ளது

in the presence of TED Talks and all of you

அதுவே நம் எதிர்கால "நம்மை" கொண்டாட

are reasons enough for us to celebrate the future "us."

போதுமான காரணங்கள் தருகிறது

But within that celebration

அந்த கொண்டாட்டத்தின் இடையில்

the quest to cultivate our capacity for love and compassion

அன்பு மற்றும் இரக்கத்தை பயிரிடுவதற்கான தேடலை

has to assert itself, has to assert itself,

உறுதிப்படுத்திக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

just as equally.

அதுவும் சமமாக.

So I believe the future "you"

is an infinite you.

எல்லையற்றவர் ஆவீர்

It's called a chakra in India, like a circle.

இந்தியாவில், அதை சக்கரம் அதாவது வட்டம் என்போம்

It ends where it begins from to complete itself.

அது தொடங்கிய இடத்திலேயே முடிந்து முழுமையாகிறது

A you that perceives time and space differently

நேரம் மற்றும் இட வித்தியாசத்தை உணரும் நீங்கள்

understands both

கற்பனை செய்ய முடியாத

your unimaginable

உங்கள் அருமையான முக்கியத்துவத்தையும்

and fantastic importance

and your complete unimportance in the larger context of the universe.

which sees from the eyes of truth,

சத்தியத்தின் கண்களிலிருந்து பார்க்கிறீர்கள்

which dreams from the clarity of an untampered mind.

ஒரு உடையாத மனதின் தெளிவிலில் கனவு காண்கிறீர்கள்

The future "you" has to be

எதிர்கால "நீங்கள்"

like an aging movie star

வயதாகும் திரை நட்சத்திரமாக

who has been made to believe that there is a possibility

தன்னை முழுவதுமாகவும் சுய வெறியுடன் விரும்பும்

of a world which is completely,

ஒரு உலகம் இருப்பதற்கான

wholly, self-obsessively

வாய்ப்பு உள்ளது என என முற்றிலுமாக

in love with itself.

நம்ப வைத்திருக்க வேண்டும்

A world -- really, it has to be a you

உலகம் உண்மையில், நீங்களாக

to create a world

தன்னை தானே நேசிக்கும்

which is its own best lover.

காதலனாக உருவாகியிருக்க வேண்டும்

That I believe, ladies and gentlemen,

அது மட்டுமே, என் அன்புக்குரியவர்களே

should be the future "you."

எதிர்கால "நீங்கள்".
