I was born in a refugee colony in the capital city of India, New Delhi.

And my father was a freedom fighter.

My mother was, well, just a fighter like mothers are.

And I thought about it and realized, and I said to my mom,

So from that night onwards,

much akin to humanity in its adolescence,

I learned the crude tools of survival.

And the framework of life was very, very simple then, to be honest.

"Adidas," somebody wrote back to one of my more thought-provoking tweets

"ئەدیداس،" یەکێک ئەو وەڵامەی نوسیبوو بۆ یەکێک لە بڵاوکراوە سەرنج ڕاکێشەکانم و

and I was wondering why would you name a sneaker,

منیش ئەموت باشە بۆچی ناوی کالەیەک ئەهێنیت،

I mean, why would you write back the name of a sneaker to me?

مەبەستم ئەوەیە، بۆچی ناوی کالەیەکم بۆ دەنوسیتەوە؟

And I asked my 16-year-old daughter, and she enlightened me.

"Adidas" now means "All day I dream about sex."

I am 51 years old, like I told you,

I just want to tell you

if there has been a momentous time for humanity to exist,

ئەگەر ساتێکی باش هەبووبێت بۆ بوونی مرۆڤایەتی،

it is now,

ئەو ساتە ئێستایە،

because the present you is brave.

چونکە ئێوەی ئێستا ئازان.

The present you is hopeful.

ئێوەی ئێستا پڕ هیوان.

The present you is innovative and resourceful,

ئێوەی ئێستا داهێنەر و بە بەرهەمن، و

and of course, the present you is annoyingly indefinable.

بێگومان، ئێوەی ئێستا لە سەروو پێناسە کردنەوەن. و

And in this spell-binding,

بەهۆی ئەم سەرنجڕاکێشەرییەوە،

imperfect moment of existence,

ئەم ساتە پڕ کەم و کوڕییەی بوونە،

feeling a little brave just before I came here,

هەستکردن بە کەمێک ئازایەتی ڕێک پێش هاتنم بۆ ئێرە،

I decided to take a good, hard look at my face.

بڕیارم یا سەیرێکی جوانی دەم و چاوی خۆم بکەم. و

And I realized that I'm beginning to look more and more

بۆم دەرکەوت تا دێت زیاتر و زیاتر لێکچوونم دەبێت لەگەڵ

like the wax statue of me at Madame Tussaud's.

پەیکەرە مۆمەکەی خۆم لە مادام توسەید.

Yeah, and in that moment of realization,

بەڵێ، وە لەو ساتی درکپێکردنەدا،

I asked the most central and pertinent question to humanity and me:

گرنگترین و پەیوەنیدارترین پرسیارم کرد لە مرۆڤایەتی و لە خۆم:

Do I need to fix my face?

پێویست دەکات ڕووخسارم چاک بکەمەوە؟

Really. I'm an actor, like I told you,

بەڕاستی. من ئەکتەرم، وەک پێم وتن،

a modern expression of human creativity.

دەربڕینێکی سەردەمی داهێنەری مرۆڤ.

The land I come from

ئەو خاکەی لێوەی هاتووم

is the source of inexplicable but very simple spirituality.

سەرچاوەیە بۆ ڕۆحپەرستییەکی تەواو سادە و باسلێوەنەکراو.

In its immense generosity,

لە بەخشندەییە بێسنوورەکەیدا،

India decided somehow

هیندستان بەجۆرێک بڕیاریدا

that I, the Muslim son of a broke freedom fighter

کە من، کوڕە موسوڵمانێکی شەڕکەرێکی ئازادی

who accidentally ventured into the business of selling dreams,

کە بەڕێکەوت سەرکێشیم کردووە بۆناو کاری فرۆشتنی خەونەکان،

should become its king of romance,

دەبێت ببم بە پادشای ڕۆمانسیەت،

the "Badhshah of Bollywood,"

"پادشای بۆلیوود"

the greatest lover the country has ever seen ...

مەزنترین دڵدار وڵاتەکە بەخۆیەوە بینیبێت..

with this face.

بەم دەم و چاوەوە.

Yeah.

بەڵێ.

Which has alternately been described as ugly, unconventional,

کە زۆرجار وەک ناشرین و نەگونجاو و نامۆ و

and strangely, not chocolatey enough.

ئەسمەر نەبوو وەک پێویست باسکراوە.

The people of this ancient land

خەڵکی ئەم خاکە دێرینە

embraced me in their limitless love,

لەباوەشیان گرتم لە خۆشەویستییە بێسنوورەکەیان، و

and I've learned from these people

لەم خەڵکانەوە فێری ئەوەبووم

that neither power nor poverty

کە نە هێز و نە هەژاری

can make your life more magical

ناتوانن ژیان ئەفسووناوی تر بکەن

or less tortuous.

یان کەمتر خواروخێچی بکەن.

I've learned from the people of my country

لە خەڵکی وڵاتەکەی خۆمەوە فێری ئەوە بووم کە

that the dignity of a life,

شکۆداری ژیانێک،

a human being, a culture, a religion, a country

مرۆڤێک، کلتورێک، ئاینێک، وڵاتێک

actually resides in its ability

پشتی بەستووە بە توانای

for grace and compassion.

بۆ چاکەکاری و هاوسۆزی.

I've learned that whatever moves you,

فێری ئەوەبووم هەرچییەک بتجوڵێنێت،

whatever urges you to create, to build,

هەرچییەک هانت بدات بۆ درووستکردن، بۆ بنیاتنان،

whatever keeps you from failing,

هەرچییەک ڕێگری بکات لە کەوتنت،

whatever helps you survive,

هەرچییەک یارمەتیت بدات بۆ ڕزگاربوون،

is perhaps the oldest and the simplest emotion known to mankind,

لەوانەیە کۆنترین و سادەترین هەست بێت کە مرۆڤ ئاشنان پێی،

and that is love.

ئەویش خۆشەویستییە.

A mystic poet from my land famously wrote,

هۆنراوەنوسێکی دێرینی خاکەکەم هۆنراوەیەکی بەناوبانگی هەیە،

وتنەوەی بە هیندی

Which loosely translates into that whatever --

کە ئەوەش واتای ئەوەیە هەر شتێک کە --

yeah, if you know Hindi, please clap, yeah.

بەڵێ، ئەگەر هیندی دەزانن، چەپڵە لێبەن.

It's very difficult to remember.

بیرهاتنەوەی زۆر قوورسە.

Which loosely translates into actually saying

کە ئەگەر وەریبگێڕیت دەتوانیت بڵێیت

that all the books of knowledge that you might read

دەتوانی هەموو کتێبەکانی زانست کە لەوانەیە بیخوێنیتەوە و

and then go ahead and impart your knowledge

ئینجا بەردەوام بیت و ئەو زانستەی پێتە بەکاربێنیت

through innovation, through creativity, through technology,

لەڕێگەی داهێنانەوە، لە ڕێگەی نوێگەرییەوە، لەڕێگەی تەکنەلۆجیاوە

but mankind will never be the wiser about its future

بەڵام مرۆڤ قەت داناتر نابێت بۆ داهاتووی

unless it is coupled with a sense of love and compassion for their fellow beings.

ئەگەر تێکەڵ نەبێت لەگەڵ هەستێکی خۆشەویستی و هاوسۆزی بۆ بوونەوەرەکانی تر.

The two and a half alphabets which form the word "प्रेम,"

ئەو دوو پیت و نیوەی کە وشە هیندییەکە پێکدەهێنێت

which means "love,"

بە واتای خۆشەویستی

if you are able to understand that

ئەگەر بتوانیت لەوە تێبگەیت و

and practice it,

پەیڕەوی بکەیت

that itself is enough to enlighten mankind.

ئەوە بۆخۆی بەسە بۆ ڕووناکبیر کردنی مرۆڤایەتی.

So I truly believe the future "you"

بۆیە بەڕاستی لەو باوەڕەیام کە ئێوەی داهاتوو

has to be a you that loves.

پێویستە ئێوەیەک بن خۆشەویستیتان هەبێت.

Otherwise it will cease to flourish.

ئەگەرنا پێشکەوتنی نامێنێت.

It will perish in its own self-absorption.

لە خۆخواردنەوەی خۆیدا بوونی نامێنێت.

So you may use your power

بۆیە دەکرێت هێزی خۆتان بەکاربێنن

to build walls

بۆ بنیاتنانی دیوارەکان و

and keep people outside,

هێشتنەوەی خەڵک لە دەرەوە،

or you may use it to break barriers and welcome them in.

یان بەکاریبهێنن بۆ شکاندنی بەربەستەکان و باوەشکردنەوە بۆیان.

You may use your faith

لەوانەیە باوەری خۆتان بەکاربهێنن

to make people afraid

بۆ ئەوەی وا بکەن خەڵک بترسن و

and terrify them into submission,

وایان لێبکەن خۆیان بەدەستەوە بدەن،

or you can use it to give courage to people

یان دەتوانن بەکاری بهێنن بۆ ئەوەی ورە بییەن بە خەڵک

so they rise to the greatest heights of enlightenment.

بۆ ئەوەی بەرزبنەوە بۆ بەرزترین ئاستی ڕووناکبیری.

You can use your energy

دەتوانن هێزی خۆتان بەکاربهێنن

to build nuclear bombs and spread the darkness of destruction,

بۆ درووستکردنی بۆمبێکی ئەتۆمی و بلاوکردنەوەی تاریکی وێرانکاری،

or you can use it to spread the joy of light to millions.

یان بەکاریبهێنن بۆ بڵاوکردنەوەی ڕووناکی بەسەر ملیۆنان خەڵکدا.

You may filthy up the oceans callously and cut down all the forests.

دەتوانن هەموو زەریاکان پیس بکەن و هەموو دارستانەکان ببڕنەوە.

You can destroy the ecology,

دەتوانن سیستمی ژینگەیی لەناوبەرن،

or turn to them with love

یان بە خۆشەویستییەوە ڕوویان تێبکەن و

and regenerate life from the waters and trees.

لە ئاوەکان و درەختەکانەوە ژیان درووست بکەنەوە.

You may land on Mars

دەتوانن بچنە سەر مەریخ و

and build armed citadels,

قەڵای پڕچەک درووست بکەن.

or you may look for life-forms and species to learn from and respect.

یان دەتوانن بۆ شێوەکانی تری ژیان و بوونەوەرەکانی تر بگەڕێن و لێیانەوە فێربن.

And you can use all the moneys we all have earned

دەشتوانن هەموو ئەو پارەیەی دەستمان کەوتووە بەکاربێنن

to wage futile wars

بۆ هەڵگیرساندنی جەنگی بێسوود و

and give guns in the hands of little children

چەک بدەینە دەستی منداڵە بچووکەکان

to kill each other with,

بۆ ئەوەی یەکتری پێبکووژن،

or you can use it

یان دەتوانین بەکاریبێنین

to make more food

بۆ بەرهەمهێنانی خواردنی زیاتر

to fill their stomachs with.

بتوانن سکیانی پێ تێرکەن.

My country has taught me

وڵاتەکەم فێری ئەوەی کردووم

the capacity for a human being to love is akin to godliness.

توانای مرۆڤ بۆ خۆشەویستی هاوشێوەی خووداپەرستییە.

It shines forth in a world

لە جیهانێکدا دەدرەوشێتەوە

which civilization, I think, already has tampered too much with.

کە پێموابێت تیایدا شارستانیەت، زۆر شتی کاول کردووە.

In the last few days, the talks here, the wonderful people

لەم چەند ڕۆژەی دواییدا، قسەکردنەکانی ئێرە، خەڵکە بێوێنەکە

coming and showing their talent,

کە یەن و بەهرەکانی خۆیان نیشان دەدەن،

talking about individual achievements, the innovation, the technology,

باسی دەستکەوتە کەسییەکان دەکەن، داهێنانەکان، تەکنەلۆجیا،

the sciences, the knowledge we are gaining by being here

زانست، زانیارییەکانی بەدەستی، دەهێنین بە بوونمان لێرە

in the presence of TED Talks and all of you

لە ئامادەبوونی تێد تۆڵک و هەمووتان

are reasons enough for us to celebrate the future "us."

هۆکارێکە بۆ ئەوەی هەموومان ئاهەنگ بگێڕین بە بۆنەی ئێمەی داهاتووەوە

But within that celebration

بەڵام لەنێو ئەو ئاهەنگ گێڕانەدا

the quest to cultivate our capacity for love and compassion

گەڕانەکەمان بۆ گەشەدان بە تواناکانمان بۆ خۆشەویستی و هاوسۆزی

has to assert itself, has to assert itself,

پێویستە سووربێت، پێویستە سووربێت،

just as equally.

بەشێوەیەکی هاوتا.

So I believe the future "you"

بۆیە لەو باوەڕەیام ئێوەی داهاتوو

is an infinite you.

ئێوەیەکی بێکۆتان.

It's called a chakra in India, like a circle.

لە هیندستان پێی دەوترێت چاکرا، هەر وەک بازنەیەک

It ends where it begins from to complete itself.

لە شوێنی دەستپێکردنییەوە تەواودەبێت بۆ تەواوکردنی خۆی.

A you that perceives time and space differently

ئێوەیەک بەشێوەیەکی جیاواز هەست بە کات و بۆشایی بکەن

understands both

لەهەردووکی تێبگەن

your unimaginable

ئێوەیەکی باوەڕپێنەکراو و

and fantastic importance

پڕ گرنگییەکی سەرسوڕهێنەر و

and your complete unimportance in the larger context of the universe.

ناگرنگییەکی تەواوتەیشتان لەسەر ئاستی گەردوونە گەورەترەکە.

A you that returns back

ئێوەیەک کە بگەڕێنەوە

to the original innocence of humanity,

بۆ بێتاوانییە بنەڕەتییەکەی مرۆڤایەتی،

which loves from the purity of heart,

کە لە پاکی دڵەوە خۆشەویستی دەکات،

which sees from the eyes of truth,

کە لە چاوەکانی ڕاستییەوە دەبینێت،

which dreams from the clarity of an untampered mind.

کە لە ڕوونی مێشکێکی کارلێنەکراوەوە خەون دەبینێت.

The future "you" has to be

ئێوەی داهاتوو پێویستە

like an aging movie star

وەک ئەستێرەیەکی بەتەمەنا چوو بن

who has been made to believe that there is a possibility

کە وایلێهاتووە باوەڕ بەوە بکات ئەگەرێک هەیە

of a world which is completely,

بۆ جیهانێک کە بە تەواوەتی،

wholly, self-obsessively

بە گشتی، و بەشێوەیەکی ئالوودەبوو

in love with itself.

لە خۆشەویستی خۆیایەتی.

A world -- really, it has to be a you

جیهانێک -- بەڕاستی، دەبێت تۆیەک بیت

to create a world

بۆ درووستکردنی جیهانێک

which is its own best lover.

کە باشترین دڵداری خۆی بێت.

That I believe, ladies and gentlemen,

کە باوەڕم وایە خانمان و بەڕێزان،

should be the future "you."

پێویستە ئێوەی داهاتوو بن.
