I was born in a refugee colony in the capital city of India, New Delhi.

So from that night onwards,

Like you notice, nobody could make any sense of what was happening except me,

It's very difficult to remember.

याद रखना बहुत मुश्किल है।

Which loosely translates into actually saying

जिसका अनुवाद करें तो वास्तव में ऐसा होगा

that all the books of knowledge that you might read

कि आप ज्ञान की कितनी भी किताबें क्यों ना पढ़ लें

and then go ahead and impart your knowledge

और फिर अपना ज्ञान बाँटें

through innovation, through creativity, through technology,

आविष्कार, सृजनात्मकता, तकनीक के द्वारा,

but mankind will never be the wiser about its future

पर मानवता अपने भविष्य को सही से नहीं जान पाएगी

unless it is coupled with a sense of love and compassion for their fellow beings.

जब तक इनके साथ अपने साथियों के लिए प्रेम और सहानुभूति नहीं लाएगी।

The two and a half alphabets which form the word "प्रेम,"

"प्रेम" शब्द के ढाई अक्षर,

which means "love,"

जिसका अर्थ है प्यार,

if you are able to understand that

अगर आप यह समझ लें

and practice it,

और इसे अपनाएँ,

that itself is enough to enlighten mankind.

मानवता को प्रबुद्ध करने के लिए बस इतना ही काफ़ी होगा।

So I truly believe the future "you"

has to be a you that loves.

एक ऐसे आप होने चाहिए जो प्रेम करे।

Otherwise it will cease to flourish.

नहीं तो यह फलना-फूलना बंद कर देगा।

It will perish in its own self-absorption.

अपने ही स्व-अवशोषण में नष्ट हो जाएगा।

तो आप अपनी शक्ति का प्रयोग कर सकते हो,

So you may use your power

to build walls

दीवारें बनाने के लिए

and keep people outside,

और लोगों को बाहर रखने के लिए,

or you may use it to break barriers and welcome them in.

या आप इसका प्रयोग बाधाएँ तोड़कर उन्हें अंदर लाने में कर सकते हो।

You may use your faith

आप अपनी श्रद्धा का प्रयोग

to make people afraid

लोगों को डराने में कर सकते हो

and terrify them into submission,

और डराकर समर्पण करवा सकते हो,

या आप उसका प्रयोग लोगों की हिम्मत बढ़ाने में कर सकते हो

or you can use it to give courage to people

so they rise to the greatest heights of enlightenment.

You can use your energy

आप अपनी शक्ति का प्रयोग

to build nuclear bombs and spread the darkness of destruction,

परमाणु बम बनाकर विनाश का अँधकार फैलाने में कर सकते हो,

or you can use it to spread the joy of light to millions.

या आप उसके प्रयोग से करोड़ों के जीवन में खुशी का दीपक जला सकते हो।

You may filthy up the oceans callously and cut down all the forests.

आप संवेदनाहीन बनकर महासागरों को दूषित कर सकते हो और वनों को नष्ट कर सकते हो।

You can destroy the ecology,

आप पर्यावरण को नष्ट कर सकते हो,

or turn to them with love

या उन्हें प्रेम से सींचते हुए

and regenerate life from the waters and trees.

पानी और वृक्षों से नए जीवन का आरम्भ कर सकते हो।

You may land on Mars

आप मंगल ग्रह पर जा सकते हैं

and build armed citadels,

और सशस्त्र किले बना सकते हैं,

or you may look for life-forms and species to learn from and respect.

या आप जीवन की प्रजाती और रूप ढूँढकर उनका सम्मान करके उनसे सीख सकते हैं।

And you can use all the moneys we all have earned

और आप हम सभी के कमाए पैसे का प्रयोग करते हुए

to wage futile wars

व्यर्थ के युद्ध छेड़ सकते हो

and give guns in the hands of little children

to kill each other with,

My country has taught me

the capacity for a human being to love is akin to godliness.

It shines forth in a world

which civilization, I think, already has tampered too much with.

In the last few days, the talks here, the wonderful people

पिछले कुछ दिनों में, यहाँ की वार्ताएँ, कमाल के लोग

coming and showing their talent,

जो आकर अपनी प्रतिभा दिखा रहे थे,

व्यक्तिगत उपलब्धियों, आविष्कारों, तकनीक, विज्ञान के बारे में बात कर रहे थै

talking about individual achievements, the innovation, the technology,

the sciences, the knowledge we are gaining by being here

यहाँ होने की वजह से जो ज्ञान हम पा रहे हैं

in the presence of TED Talks and all of you

टेड टॉक्स औऱ आप सबकी उपस्थिति में

are reasons enough for us to celebrate the future "us."

पर्याप्त कारण हैं हमें भविष्य के "हम" का जश्न मनाने के लिए।

But within that celebration

परंतु उस जश्न में

the quest to cultivate our capacity for love and compassion

हमारी प्रेम और सहानुभूति की क्षमता को बढ़ावा देने की हमारी खोज

has to assert itself, has to assert itself,

को दृढ़ता से सामने लाना होगा, को दृढ़ता से सामने लाना होगा,

just as equally.

उतनी ही बराबरी से।

So I believe the future "you"

तो मेरा मानना है कि भविष्य के "आप"

is an infinite you.

एक अनन्त "आप" हैं।

It's called a chakra in India, like a circle.

इसे भारत में चक्र कहते हैं, एक वृत्त की तरह।

It ends where it begins from to complete itself.

वह सम्पूर्ण होने के लिए जहाँ से शुरू होता है वहीं पर अंत होता है।

A you that perceives time and space differently

एक "आप" जो समय और अंतरिक्ष को अलग नज़रिये से देखते हैं

understands both

दोनों को समझते हैं

your unimaginable

आपका अकल्पनीय

and fantastic importance

और गज़ब का महत्व

and your complete unimportance in the larger context of the universe.

और सृष्टि के संदर्भ में आपकी पूर्ण महत्वहीनता।

A you that returns back

एक "आप" जो वापिस जाते हो

to the original innocence of humanity,

मानवता की मौलिक मासूमियत में,

which loves from the purity of heart,

जो हृदय की पवित्रता से प्रेम करते हो,

which sees from the eyes of truth,

जो सत्य की आँखों से देखते हो,

which dreams from the clarity of an untampered mind.

जो एक अक्षत दिमाग की स्पष्टता से सपने लेते हो।

भविष्य के "आप"

The future "you" has to be

एक बूढ़े हो रहे फ़िल्म स्टार की तरह होना चाहिए

like an aging movie star

who has been made to believe that there is a possibility

जिसे यह मानने पर मजबूर किया गया है

of a world which is completely,

कि एक ऐसे सँसार की संभावना है

wholly, self-obsessively

जो पूर्ण रूप से अपने ही जुनून में

in love with itself.

अपने ही प्रेम में संलिप्त हो।

A world -- really, it has to be a you

एक सँसार ... सच में, एक "आप" चाहिए

to create a world

जो उस सँसार की रचना करे

which is its own best lover.

जो अपना ही बेहतरीन प्रेमी हो।

That I believe, ladies and gentlemen,

मेरा मानना है, देवियों औऱ सज्जनों,

should be the future "you."

वह होंगे भविष्य के "आप"।
