As an artist,

အနုပညာရှင်တစ်ယောက် အနေနဲ့

connection is very important to me.

ဆက်သွယ်မှုဟာ ကျွန်မအတွက် အတော်အရေးပါပါတယ်။

Through my work I'm trying to articulate

ကျွန်မရဲ့လက်ရာကနေ လူသားတွေဟာ သဘာဝတရားနဲ့ သီးသန့်ဆန်မနေဘူး၊

that humans are not separate from nature

အရာရာဟာ ဆက်နွယ်နေတယ်ဆိုတာ

and that everything is interconnected.

ရှင်းလင်းပြဖို့ ကြိုးစားနေတာပါ။

I first went to Antarctica almost 10 years ago,

ပြီးခဲ့တဲ့ ၁၀နှစ်လောက်က ပထမဆုံး မြင်ခဲ့တဲ့

where I saw my first icebergs.

Antarctica ကို ပထမဆုံးသွားခဲ့တယ်။

I was in awe.

အံ့ဩသွားမိတယ်။

My heart beat fast, my head was dizzy,

နှလုံးခုန်တာ မြန်ပြီး ခေါင်းက မူးဝေကာ

trying to comprehend what it was that stood in front of me.

ရှေ့မှာရှိနေတာ ဘာပါလိမ့်ဆိုပြီး နားလည်အောင် ကြိုးစားနေခဲ့တယ်။

The icebergs around me

ကျွန်မ ပတ်လည်က ရေခဲစိုင်တွေဟာ

were almost 200 feet out of the water,

ရေထဲကနေ ပေ ၂၀၀ လောက် ထွက်နေပြီး၊

and I could only help but wonder

မအံ့ဩပဲကို မနေနိုင်တော့ဘူးလေ။

that this was one snowflake

ဒါက တစ်နှစ်ပြီး တစ်နှစ်

on top of another snowflake,

တစ်ခုအပေါ် တစ်ခု ထပ်ကျနေတဲ့

year after year.

ဆီးနှင်းပွင့်တစ်ပွင့်ပါ။

Icebergs are born

ရေခဲစိုင်တွေဟာ ရေခဲမြစ်တွေက

when they calve off of glaciers

ခွဲထွက်တာ ဒါမှမဟုတ် ရေခဲပြင်တွေ

or break off of ice shelves.

ကွဲထွက်တဲ့အခါမှာ ဖြစ်ထွန်းပါတယ်။

Each iceberg has its own individual personality.

ရေခဲစိုင်တစ်ခုစီမှာ ကိုယ်ပိုင် သီခြား စရိုက်ရှိပါတယ်

They have a distinct way

သူတို့ပတ်ဝန်းကျင်နဲ့ သူတို့

of interacting with their environment

တွေ့ကြုံမှုတွေကို တုံ့လှည် ဆက်သွယ်ရာမှာ

and their experiences.

ကွဲပြားတဲ့နည်း တစ်ခုရှိပါတယ်။

Some refuse to give up

တစ်ချို့က လက်လျှော့ဖို့ ငြင်းပြီး

and hold on to the bitter end,

ခါးသီးတဲ့ အဆုံးသတ်ထိ တင်းခံတတ်ကြပေမဲ့

while others can't take it anymore

အခြားဟာတွေက တောင့်မခံနိုင်တော့ဘဲ

and crumble in a fit of dramatic passion.

ရုတ်တရက် စိတ်ဇောအဟုန်မှာ ဝုန်းကနဲ ပြိုကွဲကုန်တာပေါ့

It's easy to think, when you look at an iceberg,

စဉ်းစားကြည့်ဖို့လွယ်ပါတယ်၊ ရေခဲစိုင်ကို ကြည့်လိုက်ရင်

that they're isolated,

သူတို့တွေဟာ သီခြားစီဖြစ်နေတယ်၊

that they're separate and alone,

ကွဲပြားပြီး ထီးတည်း ဖြစ်နေတယ်။

much like we as humans sometimes view ourselves.

လူသားတွေ တခါတလေ ကိုယ့်ကိုယ် ကို ရှုမြင်တဲ့အခါနဲ့ အရမ်းဆင်တယ်၊

But the reality is far from it.

ဒါပေမဲ့ တကယ်က ဒါနဲ့ တခြားစီပါ။

As an iceberg melts,

ရေခဲစိုင်တစ်တုံး အရည်ပျော်ခိုက်

I am breathing in

၎င်းရဲ့ ရှေးဟောင်း လေထုလွာကို

its ancient atmosphere.

ကျွန်မ ရှူသွင်းနေတယ်။

As the iceberg melts,

ရေခဲစိုင်တစ်တုံး အရည်ပျော်ခိုက်

it is releasing mineral-rich fresh water

သက်ရှိများစွာကို အားဖြစ်စေတဲ့ သတ္ထုဓာတ်ကြွယ်ဝတဲ့

that nourishes many forms of life.

လတ်ဆတ်တဲ့ရေကို ထုတ်လွှတ်ပေးနေတယ်။

I approach photographing these icebergs

ဒီရေခဲစိုင်တွေကို ဓာတ်ပုံရိုက်ရင်း ချဉ်းကပ်တာ

as if I'm making portraits of my ancestors,

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ဘိုးဘေးတွေရဲ့ ပုံတူတွေကို ရိုက်နေသလိုမျိုးပေါ့၊

knowing that in these individual moments

ဒီနည်းနဲ့ သူတို့တည်ရှိတဲ့ ဒီသီးသန့် ကာလတွေနဲ့

they exist in that way

နောက်တစ်ခါ ဒီပုံနဲ့ ဘယ်တော့မှ

and will never exist that way again.

တည်ရှိမှာမဟုတ်ဘူးဆိုတာ သိရင်းနဲ့ပေါ့။

It is not a death when they melt;

သူတို့ အရည်ပျော်တဲ့အခါ သေဆုံးခြင်း မဟုတ်ပါ၊

it is not an end,

အဆုံးသတ် တစ်ခု မဟုတ်ပဲ

but a continuation

ဘဝသံသရာကို ဖြတ်သန်းတဲ့

of their path through the cycle of life.

သူတို့လမ်းကြောင်းရဲ့ အဆက် တစ်ခုပါ။

Some of the ice in the icebergs that I photograph is very young --

ကျွန်မဓာတ်ပုံရိုက်တဲ့ ရေခဲစိုင်တွေထဲက ရေခဲ တစ်ချို့ဟာ အရမ်းငယ်တယ်၊

a couple thousand years old.

နှစ် ၁၀၀၀၊၂၀၀၀ သက်တမ်းရှိတယ်။

And some of the ice

တစ်ချို့ရေခဲက

is over 100,000 years old.

နှစ်ပေါင်း ၁သိန်းကျော် သက်တမ်းရှိတယ်။

The last pictures I'd like to show you

နောက်ဆုံးပြချင်တဲ့ ပုံတွေကတော့

are of an iceberg that I photographed

Greenland က Qeqetarsuaq မှာရိုက်ခဲ့တဲ့

in Qeqetarsuaq, Greenland.

ရေခဲစိုင်ရဲ့ ပုံတွေပါ။

It's a very rare occasion

သင့်အနေနဲ့ ရေခဲစိုင်တစ်ခု လှိမ့်နေတာ

that you get to actually witness

တကယ် မျက်မြင်တွေ့ဖို့ ရောက်ရှိတယ်ဆိုတာ

an iceberg rolling.

တော်တော် ရှားပါးတဲ့ ဖြစ်ရပ်ပါ။

So here it is.

ဒီတော့ ဟောဒီမှာပါ။

You can see on the left side a small boat.

ဘယ်ဘက်ခြမ်းမှာ လှေငယ်တစ်စင်း တွေ့နိုင်ပါတယ်၊

That's about a 15-foot boat.

ဒါက ၁၅ ပေလောက်ရှိတဲ့ လှေပါ။

And I'd like you to pay attention

ရေခဲစိုင်ရဲ့ပုံသဏ္ဍာန်နဲ့

to the shape of the iceberg

ရေပြင်ရဲ့ ဘယ်နေရာမှာဆိုတာ

and where it is at the waterline.

ဂရုထားစေချင်ပါတယ်။

You can see here, it begins to roll,

ဒီမှာတွေ့နိုင်ပါတယ်၊ စတင်လိမ့်တယ်၊

and the boat has moved to the other side, and the man is standing there.

လှေက တဘက်ရွေ့သွားပြီး လူက အဲဒီမှာရပ်နေတယ်။

This is an average-size Greenlandic iceberg.

ဒါက ပျမ်းမျှအရွယ်ရှိတဲ့ ဂရင်းလန်ဒစ် ရေခဲစိုင်ပေါ့။

It's about 120 feet above the water,

ရေပြင်အထက် ပေ ၁၂၀ လောက်

or 40 meters.

ဒါမှမဟုတ် မီတာ ၄၀ ပေါ့။

And this video is real time.
