As an artist,

وەکو هونەرمەندێک،

connection is very important to me.

پەیوەندی بۆ من زۆر گرنگە.

Through my work I'm trying to articulate

لە ڕێگەی کارەکەمەوە هەوڵ دەدەم ڕونی بکەمەوە

that humans are not separate from nature

کە مرۆڤ لە سروشت جودا نییە

and that everything is interconnected.

هەموو شتێک پێکەوە بەستراوە.

I first went to Antarctica almost 10 years ago,

من ١٠ ساڵ لەمەوبەر بۆ ئەنتارکتیکا ڕۆیشتم،

where I saw my first icebergs.

لەوێ یەکەم چیای بەفرینم بینی.

I was in awe.

ترسام.

My heart beat fast, my head was dizzy,

دڵم بە پەلە لێی دەدا، سەرم دەسوڕا،

trying to comprehend what it was that stood in front of me.

The icebergs around me

چیا بەفرینەکان لە چواردەورم

were almost 200 feet out of the water,

٢٠٠ پێ لە ئاوەکە بەرزتر بوون،

and I could only help but wonder

that this was one snowflake

on top of another snowflake,

year after year.

Icebergs are born

چیا بەفرینەکان دروست بوون

when they calve off of glaciers

or break off of ice shelves.

Each iceberg has its own individual personality.

هەر چیایەکی بەفرین تایبەتمەندی خۆی هەیە.

They have a distinct way

ڕێگەیەکی ئاشکرایان هەیە

of interacting with their environment

بۆ کار لێک کردن لەگەڵ ژینگە و

and their experiences.

ئەزمونەکانییان.

Some refuse to give up

هەندێک ڕەتی دەکەنەوە کە لە ناو بچن

and hold on to the bitter end,

و دەوەستن تا کۆتاییەکی تاڵ،

while others can't take it anymore

لە کاتێکدا ئەوانی تر زیاتر ناتوانن و

and crumble in a fit of dramatic passion.

بە کۆتاییەکی دراماتیکی لە ناو دەچن.

It's easy to think, when you look at an iceberg,

ئاسانە بیر بکەیتەوە، کاتێک سەیری چیایەکی بەفرین دەکەیت،

that they're isolated,

کە ئەوان دورە پەرێزن و

that they're separate and alone,

جیا بونەتەوە و بەتەنهان،

much like we as humans sometimes view ourselves.

But the reality is far from it.

بەڵام ڕاستییەکە لە مەوە دوورە.

As an iceberg melts,

کە چیایەکی بەفرین دەتوێتەوە،

I am breathing in

its ancient atmosphere.

هەناسە دەدەم.

As the iceberg melts,

کە چیایەکی بەفرین دەتوێتەوە،

it is releasing mineral-rich fresh water

ئاوی خواردنەوەی دەوڵەمەند بە کانزا زیاد دەکات

that nourishes many forms of life.

کە یارمەتی گەشەی چەند شێوەیەکی ژیان دەدات.

I approach photographing these icebergs

وێنەی چیا بەفرینەکانم دەگرت

as if I'm making portraits of my ancestors,

وەکو ئەوەی وێنەی پێشینانم بگرم،

knowing that in these individual moments

دەزانم کە ئەم چرکە ساتانە

they exist in that way

بەم شێوەیە هەن

and will never exist that way again.

و هەرگیز بەم شێوەیە دووبارە نابنەوە.

It is not a death when they melt;

ئەوە مردن نییە کاتێک دەتوێنەوە؛

it is not an end,

ئەمە کۆتایی نییە،

but a continuation

بەڵکو بەردەوامی

of their path through the cycle of life.

ڕێڕەویانە لە سوڕی ژیاندا.

Some of the ice in the icebergs that I photograph is very young --

هەندێک لە سەهۆڵ کە لە چیا بەفرینەکان وێنەم گرتوون زۆر گەنجن--

a couple thousand years old.

تەمەنیان چەند هەزار ساڵێکە.

And some of the ice

و هەندێک لە سەهۆڵەکان

is over 100,000 years old.

تەمەنیان ١٠٠،٠٠٠ ساڵ بەرەو سەرە.

The last pictures I'd like to show you

کۆتا وێنە حەز دەکەم پیشانتان بدەم

are of an iceberg that I photographed

چیایەکی بەفرینە وێنەم گرتووە

in Qeqetarsuaq, Greenland.

It's a very rare occasion

ئەوە هەلێکی دەگمەنە

that you get to actually witness

کە خۆتان گەواهیدەر بن لە

an iceberg rolling.

خولانەوەی چیایەکی بەفرینە.

So here it is.

ئەوەتا.

You can see on the left side a small boat.

لە لای چەپ دەتوانن بەلەمێکی بچوک ببینن

That's about a 15-foot boat.

کە بەلەمێکی نزیکەی ١٥ پێیە.

And I'd like you to pay attention

و من حەز دەکەم ئاگاداری

to the shape of the iceberg

شێوەی چیا بەفرینەکە بن

and where it is at the waterline.

لەوێ لەسەر هێڵی ئاوییە.

You can see here, it begins to roll,

لێرە دەیبینن، دەست بە خولانەوە دەکات، و

and the boat has moved to the other side, and the man is standing there.

This is an average-size Greenlandic iceberg.

It's about 120 feet above the water,

or 40 meters.
