You're looking at a woman who was publicly silent for a decade.

But the night of my speech, a surprising thing happened.

So like me, at 22, a few of you may have also taken wrong turns

Of course, life is full of surprises.

That meant we could access all the information we wanted,

and to keep people tuned to the TV.

Now, I admit I made mistakes --

especially wearing that beret.

But the attention and judgment that I received --

I was branded as a tramp,

and, of course, "that woman."

I was seen by many,

In 1998, I lost my reputation and my dignity.

It is September of 1998.

The public humiliation was excruciating.

With every click, we make a choice.

Why? Because they all have humiliation at their cores.

As we've changed beliefs about same-sex marriage,

လိင်တူခြင်း လက်ထပ်ခြင်းနဲ့ပတ်သက်ပြီး

ယုံကြည်မှုတွေ ပြောင်းလာတာနဲ့အမျှ

more people have been offered equal freedoms.

လူတွေဟာ တူညီတဲ့ လွပ်လပ်ခြင်းတွေ

ပိုပြီး အပ်နှင်းခံလာရပါတယ်။

When we began valuing sustainability,

တည်တံ့နိူင်မှုကို တန်ဖိုးထားတာကို အစပြုလိုက်တဲ့အခါ

more people began to recycle.

ပိုများတဲ့လူတွေက ထပ်တလဲလဲ သုံးခြင်းကို အစပြုလာတာပေါ့။

ဒီတော့ ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ အရှက်တကွဲဖြစ်ခြင်း

So as far as our culture of humiliation goes,

ယဉ်ကျေးမှု ဆက်သွားနေသရွေ့

what we need is a cultural revolution.

Public shaming as a blood sport has to stop,

and it's time for an intervention on the internet and in our culture.

The shift begins with something simple,

but it's not easy.

လွယ်တော့ မလွယ်ဘူးပေါ့နော်။

We need to return to a long-held value of compassion,

ကျွန်မတို့ အရှည်သဖြင့် စွဲကိုင်လာခဲ့တဲ့ သနားကရုဏာဆီကို

ပြန်သွားဖို့လိုတယ်၊ သနားကရုဏာနဲ့ မျှဝေခံစားခြင်းပေါ့လေ။

compassion and empathy.

အွန်လိုင်းမှာက သနားကရုဏာ ပြတ်လပ်ပြီး၊

Online, we've got a compassion deficit,

an empathy crisis.

မျှဝေခံစားမှုက ကပ်ဆိုက်နေတယ်လေ။

Researcher Brené Brown said, and I quote,

သုသတသီ Brené Brown ပြောတာကို ကိုးကားရရင်

အရှက်ရခြင်းဟာ မျှဝေခံစားခြင်းကို

"Shame can't survive empathy."

အသက်ဆက်မပေးနိုင်ဘူး" တဲ့လေ။

Shame cannot survive empathy.

အရှက်ရခြင်းဟာ မျှဝေခံစားခြင်းကို

အသက်ဆက်မပေးနိုင်ပါဘူး။

I've seen some very dark days in my life.

ကျွန်မဘဝမှာ အမှောင်ကျတဲ့ နေ့တွေကို ကျွန်မကြုံဖူးပါတယ်​။

ကျွန်မကို ကယ်တင်ပေးခဲ့တာက ကျွန်မရဲ့

It was the compassion and empathy from my family, friends, professionals

မိသားစု၊ မိတ်ဆွေတွေ၊ ပညာရှင်တွေနဲ့

တစ်ခါတစ်လေ သူစိမ်းတစ်ရံစံတွေ တောင်မှပဲလေ။

and sometimes even strangers

that saved me.

လူတစ်ယောက်ဆီက မျှ​ေဝခံစားခြင်းကတောင်

Even empathy from one person can make a difference.

အပြောင်းအလဲတစ်ခု လုပ်ပေးနိူင်ပါတယ်။

The theory of minority influence,

လူမှုရေးစိတ်ပညာရှင် Serge Moscovici အဆိုပြုထားတဲ့

proposed by social psychologist Serge Moscovici,

အသေးစား သက်ရောက်မှု သီအိုရီမှာ ပြောတာက

says that even in small numbers,

"နည်းပါးတဲ့အရေအတွက်တောင်မှ

when there's consistency over time,

ကြာလာတော့ တသမတ်တည်းဖြစ်တဲ့အခါ

change can happen.

အပြောင်းအလဲဖြစ်ပေါ်နိုင်စေတယ်"တဲ့။

In the online world, we can foster minority influence

အွန်လိုင်းလောကထဲမှာ ကျွန်မတို့ဟာ တော်တည့်

ဖြောင့်မတ်သူတွေဖြစ်လာခြင်းကနေ

by becoming upstanders.

အသေးစား သက်ရောက်မှုကို တိုးမြှင့်ပေနိုင်ပါတယ်။

တော်တည့်ဖြေင့်မှန်သူ ဖြစ်လာရေးဆိုတာဟာ

To become an upstander means instead of bystander apathy,

ဘေးကထိုင်ကြည့်သူ စိတ်မဝင်စားမှု ဆိုတာထက်

တစ်ယောက်ယောက်အတွက် အပြုသဘောမှတ်ချက်

တစ်ခုတင်ပေးနိုင်တာ ဒါမှမဟုတ်

we can post a positive comment for someone or report a bullying situation.

အနိုင်ကျင့်တဲ့အခြေအနေတစ်ခုကို

အကြောင်းကြားပေးနိုင်တာကို ဆိုလိုတာပါ။

Trust me, compassionate comments help abate the negativity.

ကျွန်မပြောတာကိုယုံပါ၊ စာနာမှုပါတဲ့ မှတ်ချက်တွေဟာ

အနုတ်သဘောဆောင်မှုကို လျော့စဲဖို့ အထောက်အကူပေးပါတယ်။

We can also counteract the culture by supporting organizations

အဖွဲ့အစည်းတွေကို ထောက်ခံခြင်းနည်းနဲ့

that deal with these kinds of issues,

like the Tyler Clementi Foundation in the US;

လွတ်လပ်စွာထုတ်ဖော်ပြောပြဖို့ ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့

We talk a lot about our right to freedom of expression.

အခွင့်အရေးတွေ အကြောင်းကို

ကျွန်မတို့ တော်တော်ပြောကြပါတယ်၊

But we need to talk more about our responsibility

ဒါပေမဲ့ လွတ်လပ်စွာ ဖေါ်ထုတ်ပြောဆိုတာနဲ့ ပတ်သက်တဲ့

ကျွန်မတို့ရဲ့ တာဝန်ဝတ္တရား အကြောင်းကို ပိုပြောဖို့လိုပါတယ်။

to freedom of expression.

ကျွန်မတို့အားလုံး ပြောတာတွေကို ကြားစေချင်ကြပါတယ်၊

We all want to be heard,

but let's acknowledge the difference between speaking up with intention

ဒါပေမဲ့ ရည်ရွယ်ချက်နဲ့ ရပ်တည်ပြောဆိုပေးတာနဲ့

အာရုံစိုက်လာအောင် ရပ်တည်ပြောဆိုပေးတာ အကြားက

and speaking up for attention.

The internet is the superhighway for the id.

အခုနကပြောသလိုပဲ အင်တာနက်ဟာ အလွန်လျှင်မြန်တဲ့နှုန်းပါ၊

ဒါပေမဲ့ အွန်လိုင်းမှာ အခြားသူတွေအပေါ်ကို မျှဝေခံစားမှု

But online, showing empathy to others benefits us all

ပြသခြင်းဟာ အားလုံးအတွက် အကျိုးရှိပြီး

ပိုပြီးလုံခြုံ၊ ပိုပြီးကောင်းမွန်တဲ့ ကမ္ဘာတစ်ခုကို

and helps create a safer and better world.

ဖန်တီးဖို့ အထောက်အကူ ပေးပါတယ်။

We need to communicate online with compassion,

ကျွန်မတို့တွေဟာ ကရုဏာတရားနဲ့

အွန်လိုင်း ဆက်သွယ်မှုလုပ်ဖို့၊

consume news with compassion

သတင်းတွေကို ကရုဏာစိတ်နဲ့ သုံးစွဲဖို့၊

and click with compassion.

ကရုဏာစိတ်နဲ့ ကလစ်နှိပ်ကြဖို့ လိုအပ်ပါတယ်။

Just imagine walking a mile in someone else's headline.

အခြားသူတစ်ယောက်ရဲ့ သတင်းစာခေါင်းစီးထဲကို

၁ မိုင်လောက် လမ်းလျှောက်ကြည့်တယ်လို့ စိတ်ကူးကြည့်လိုက်ပါ။

I'd like to end on a personal note.

ကျွန်မရဲ့ ကိုယ်ပိုင် မှတ်ချက်ကလေးနဲ့ နိဂုံးချုပ်ချင်ပါတယ်၊

In the past nine months,

လွန်ခဲ့တဲ့ ၉ လအတွင်းက

the question I've been asked the most is "Why?"

ကျွန်မ အမေးခံရဆုံး မေးခွန်းကတော့ ဘာကြောင့်လဲ ဆိုတာပါ၊

Why now?

အခုတော့ရော ဘာဖြစ်လို့လဲ၊ ဘာဖြစ်လို့ ခေါင်းမိုးစွန်းအထက်က

Why was I sticking my head above the parapet?

ကျွန်မ ခေါင်းပြူ ထွက်နေခဲ့တာပါလိမ့်။

ဒီမေးခွန်းတွေထဲက ပြောမထားတာကို

You can read between the lines in those questions,

ရှင်တို့ ဖတ်ကြည့်နိုင်ပါတယ်၊

and the answer has nothing to do with politics.

အဖြေဟာ နိုင်ငံရေးနဲ့ ပတ်သက်မှုမရှိပါဘူး။

ထိပ်ဆုံးက မှတ်သားဖွယ် အဖြေဟာ အချိန်ကြောင့်

The top-note answer was and is "Because it's time."

ဖြစ်ခဲ့ပါတယ်၊ ဖြစ်နေဆဲပါ။

ကျွန်မရဲ့ အတိတ်ဝန်းကျင်ထဲကို ချွတ်နင်းဝင်ရောက်တာကို

Time to stop tiptoeing around my past,

ရပ်ဖို့ အချိန်တန်ပါပြီ၊

တံထွေးခွက် ပက်လက်မြောတဲ့ ဘဝတစ်ခုမှာ

time to stop living a life of opprobrium

ရှင်သန်နေတာကို ရပ်ဖို့ အချိန်ရောက်ပါပြီ၊

and time to take back my narrative.

ပြီးတော့ ကျွန်မရဲ့ ဇာတ်လမ်းဆီ ပြန်သွားဖို့

အချိန်ရောက်ပါပြီရှင်။

It's also not just about saving myself.

ဒါဟာ ကျွန်မကိုယ်ကျွန်မ ကယ်တင်ဖို့ပဲ မဟုတ်ပါဘူး။

အရှက်ရခြင်းနဲ့ လူကြားသူကြား အရှက်တကွဲ ဖြစ်ရခြင်းကို

Anyone who is suffering from shame and public humiliation

ခံစားနေရတဲ့ သူတိုင်းအတွက်

needs to know one thing:

သိစရာတစ်ခု လိုအပ်ပါတယ်၊

You can survive it.

"ဒါကို ကျော်လွှားနိုင်ပါတယ်"

I know it's hard.

ဒါဟာ ခက်ခဲတယ်ဆိုတာ ကျွန်မသိပါတယ်၊

It may not be painless, quick or easy,

မနာမကျင်၊ အလျင်အမြန် ဒါမှမဟုတ် အလွယ်နဲ့ ဟုတ်ချင်မှဟုတ်မယ်။

ဒါပေမဲ့ ရှင်တို့ဇာတ်လမ်းရဲ့ နိဂုံးအသစ်တစ်ခုကို

but you can insist on a different ending to your story.

မလျှော့တမ်း လုပ်ဆောင်နိုင်တယ်လေ။

Have compassion for yourself.

ကိုယ့်ကိုကိုယ် ကြင်နာကရုဏာစိတ် မွေးပါ။

We all deserve compassion

ကျွန်မတို့အားလုံး ကရုဏာစိတ်နဲ့ ထိုက်တန်ပါတယ်၊

and to live both online and off in a more compassionate world.
