You're looking at a woman who was publicly silent for a decade.

Granted, it was before social media,

Now, I admit I made mistakes --

But the attention and judgment that I received --

I was branded as a tramp,

It is September of 1998.

A few days later, the Starr Report is released to Congress,

and by "this," I mean the stealing of people's private words, actions,

I was on the phone with my mom in September of 2010,

Tyler's tragic, senseless death was a turning point for me.

It served to recontextualize my experiences,

and I then began to look at the world of humiliation and bullying around me

and see something different.

In 1998, we had no way of knowing

had mushroomed.

Every day online, people -- especially young people,

who are not developmentally equipped to handle this --

And there's nothing virtual about that.

Childline, a UK nonprofit that's focused on helping young people on various issues,

released a staggering statistic late last year:

from 2012 to 2013, there was an 87 percent increase

It's led to desensitization and a permissive environment online,

Consider a few prominent examples just from the past six months alone.

But in this culture of humiliation,

there is another kind of price tag attached to public shaming.

The price does not measure the cost to the victim,

which Tyler and too many others --

مما سجعلنا نشهد أكثر سلوكا مثل التنمّر على الإنترنت

some forms of hacking

و التحرش على الإنترنت.

and online harassment.

Why? Because they all have humiliation at their cores.

لماذا؟ لأن الإذلال من صميم جوهرهم

This behavior is a symptom of the culture we've created.

هذا الإذلال هو عرض للثقافة التي خلقناها.

Just think about it.

فقط فكروا بالأمر

Changing behavior begins with evolving beliefs.

تغيير السلوك يبدأ بتطور المعتقدات

We've seen that to be true with racism, homophobia

و لقد وجدنا أن ذلك ينسجم مع العنصرية و الجنسية المثلية

and plenty of other biases,

و العديد من النزعات الأخرى، اليوم و في الماضي

today and in the past.

As we've changed beliefs about same-sex marriage,

فكما غيرنا من نظرتنا تجاه الزواج من نفس الجنس،

more people have been offered equal freedoms.

When we began valuing sustainability,

more people began to recycle.

So as far as our culture of humiliation goes,

what we need is a cultural revolution.

Public shaming as a blood sport has to stop,

and it's time for an intervention on the internet and in our culture.

The shift begins with something simple,

but it's not easy.

We need to return to a long-held value of compassion,

نحن بحاجة أن نعود إلى قيم الرحمة الأولى، الرحمة و التعاطف

compassion and empathy.

على الإنترنت لدينا عجز في مستوى الرحمة

Online, we've got a compassion deficit,

an empathy crisis.

و أزمة تعاطف.

Researcher Brené Brown said, and I quote,

"Shame can't survive empathy."

"الفضيحة لا يمكنها أن تحيا مع التعاطف"

Shame cannot survive empathy.

الفضيحة لا يمكنها أن تحيا مع التعاطف

I've seen some very dark days in my life.

لقد شهدت أياما مظلمة في حياتي

It was the compassion and empathy from my family, friends, professionals

و قد كان مقدار الرحمة و التعاطف من أسرتي و أصدقائي و ذوي الإختصاص

بل أحيانا حتى الغرباء هو الشيء الذي أنقذني

and sometimes even strangers

that saved me.

Even empathy from one person can make a difference.

مجرد التعاطف من شخص واحد يخلق فرقا.

The theory of minority influence,

نظرية تأثير الأقلية

proposed by social psychologist Serge Moscovici,

أقترحت من قبل عالم النفس الإجتماعي سيرجي موسكيفيكي

says that even in small numbers,

قائلا حتى في المجموعات الصغيرة

when there's consistency over time,

عند توفر الثبات مع مرور الزمن

change can happen.

فإن التغيير قابل للحدوث.

In the online world, we can foster minority influence

بالنسبة لعالم الإنترنت يمكننا تعزيز تأثير الأقلية

by becoming upstanders.

بأن نكون دعاة حق.

To become an upstander means instead of bystander apathy,

و ذلك يعني بدل أن نقف متفرجين بلا مبالاة

we can post a positive comment for someone or report a bullying situation.

يمكننا لصق تعليق إيجابي لشخص ما أو الإبلاغ عن حالة تنمّر.

Trust me, compassionate comments help abate the negativity.

We can also counteract the culture by supporting organizations

يمكننا القيام بهجمة مرتدة بأن ندعم المنظمات

that deal with these kinds of issues,

like the Tyler Clementi Foundation in the US;

مثل مؤسسة تايلر كليمينتي في الولايات المتحدة

in the UK, there's Anti-Bullying Pro;

في المملكة المتحدة يوجد برنامج مكافحة التنمّر

and in Australia, there's PROJECT ROCKIT.

و في أستراليا هناك مشروع روكيت

We talk a lot about our right to freedom of expression.

نتحدث كثيرا عن حقنا في حرية التعبير

But we need to talk more about our responsibility

و لكننا بحاجة أن نتحدث أكثر

عن مسؤوليتنا تجاه حرية التعبير

to freedom of expression.

جميعنا يريد أن يسمع صوته

We all want to be heard,

but let's acknowledge the difference between speaking up with intention

و لكن لابد أن نتعرف على الفرق بين التحدث مع تبييت نية

and speaking up for attention.

و التحدث من أجل الإهتمام

The internet is the superhighway for the id.

الإنترنت هو الطريق السريع إلى الآنا

But online, showing empathy to others benefits us all

و لكن على الإنترنت، إظهار التعاطف للآخرين

ينفعنا جميعا و يساعد في خلق عالم آمن و أفضل.

and helps create a safer and better world.

We need to communicate online with compassion,

نحن بحاجة أن نتواصل على الإنترنت برحمة

consume news with compassion

أن نتناول الأخبار برحمة

and click with compassion.

و أن ننقر برحمة.

Just imagine walking a mile in someone else's headline.

فقط تخيل أن تسير مسافة ميل في حياة شخص آخر

I'd like to end on a personal note.

أحب أن أنتهي بملاحظة شخصية.

In the past nine months,

خلال الشهور التسعة الماضية

the question I've been asked the most is "Why?"

كان السؤال الذي يطرح علي بشدة هو لماذا.

Why now?

Why was I sticking my head above the parapet?

لماذا الآن؟ لماذا تركت مخاوفي و تحليت بالشجاعة؟

You can read between the lines in those questions,

لكم أن تقرأوا بين السطور في هذه الأسئلة

and the answer has nothing to do with politics.

و الإجابة لا علاقة لها بالسياسة.

The top-note answer was and is "Because it's time."

إجابة الملاحظة الأولى كانت و ما زالت بسبب أن هذا هو الوقت المناسب

Time to stop tiptoeing around my past,

الوقت كي أوقف التسكع حول ماضي

الوقت لوقف عيش حياة الإزدراء.

time to stop living a life of opprobrium

and time to take back my narrative.

و كذلك لإسترداد حكايتي.

It's also not just about saving myself.

لا يتعلق الأمر فقط بإنقاذ نفسي.

Anyone who is suffering from shame and public humiliation

كل من يعاني من الفضح و الإذلال العلني

needs to know one thing:

يحتاج أن يعرف شيئا واحدا:

You can survive it.

يمكنك النجاة من ذلك.

I know it's hard.

أعرف أن الأمر صعب.

It may not be painless, quick or easy,

قد لا يبدو رحيما أو سريعا أو سهلا

but you can insist on a different ending to your story.

و لكن بإمكانك الإصرار على نهاية مختلفة لقصتك.

Have compassion for yourself.

كن رؤوفا بنفسك

We all deserve compassion

جميعنا يستحق الرأفة

and to live both online and off in a more compassionate world.

و أن نعيش على العالم الإفتراضي أو الحقيقي بطريقة أكثر رأفة
