You're looking at a woman who was publicly silent for a decade.

But the night of my speech, a surprising thing happened.

At the age of 41, I was hit on by a 27-year-old guy.

I know, right?

He was charming, and I was flattered,

I realized, later that night,

Of course, life is full of surprises.

In 1998, after having been swept up into an improbable romance,

That meant we could access all the information we wanted,

when we wanted it, anytime, anywhere.

And when the story broke in January 1998,

it broke online.

It was the first time the traditional news was usurped by the internet

What that meant for me personally

was that overnight, I went from being a completely private figure

I was patient zero of losing a personal reputation on a global scale

This rush to judgment, enabled by technology,

led to mobs of virtual stone-throwers.

Granted, it was before social media,

e-mail stories,

News sources plastered photos of me all over

to sell newspapers, banner ads online,

and to keep people tuned to the TV.

Do you recall a particular image of me, say, wearing a beret?

Now, I admit I made mistakes --

especially wearing that beret.

But the attention and judgment that I received --

not the story, but that I personally received --

was unprecedented.

I was branded as a tramp,

tart,

slut,

whore,

bimbo,

and, of course, "that woman."

I was seen by many,

but actually known by few.

And I get it: it was easy to forget

When this happened to me 17 years ago, there was no name for it.

Now we call it "cyberbullying" and "online harassment."

Today, I want to share some of my experience with you,

talk about how that experience has helped shape my cultural observations,

In 1998, I lost my reputation and my dignity.

I lost almost everything.

And I almost lost my life.

Let me paint a picture for you.

It is September of 1998.

I'm sitting in a windowless office room

inside the Office of the Independent Counsel,

underneath humming fluorescent lights.

I'm listening to the sound of my voice,

my voice on surreptitiously taped phone calls

that a supposed friend had made the year before.

I'm here because I've been legally required

to personally authenticate all 20 hours of taped conversation.

For the past eight months, the mysterious content of these tapes

has hung like the sword of Damocles over my head.

I mean, who can remember what they said a year ago?

Scared and mortified, I listen,

listen as I prattle on about the flotsam and jetsam of the day;

and, of course, my heartbreak;

A few days later, the Starr Report is released to Congress,

But a few weeks later,

and significant portions made available online.

The public humiliation was excruciating.

Life was almost unbearable.

This was not something that happened with regularity back then in 1998,

and by "this," I mean the stealing of people's private words, actions,

conversations or photos,

and then making them public --

Fast-forward 12 years, to 2010,

and now social media has been born.

The landscape has sadly become much more populated with instances like mine,

whether or not someone actually made a mistake,

and now, it's for both public and private people.

The consequences for some have become dire, very dire.

I was on the phone with my mom in September of 2010,

and we were talking about the news of a young college freshman

named Tyler Clementi.

Sweet, sensitive, creative Tyler was secretly webcammed by his roommate

का एक ऐसा वि्डियो उसके रूम मेट ने बना लिया

while being intimate with another man.

When the online world learned of this incident,

the ridicule and cyberbullying ignited.

A few days later,

Tyler jumped from the George Washington Bridge

to his death.

He was 18.

My mom was beside herself about what happened to Tyler and his family,

and she was gutted with pain

in a way that I just couldn't quite understand.

And then eventually, I realized she was reliving 1998,

reliving a time when she sat by my bed every night,

Today, too many parents haven't had the chance

to step in and rescue their loved ones.

Too many have learned of their child's suffering and humiliation

after it was too late.

Tyler's tragic, senseless death was a turning point for me.

It served to recontextualize my experiences,

and I then began to look at the world of humiliation and bullying around me

and see something different.

In 1998, we had no way of knowing

Since then, it has connected people in unimaginable ways --

But the darkness, cyberbullying, and slut-shaming that I experienced

had mushroomed.

Every day online, people -- especially young people,

who are not developmentally equipped to handle this --

are so abused and humiliated

that they can't imagine living to the next day.

And some, tragically, don't.

And there's nothing virtual about that.

Childline, a UK nonprofit that's focused on helping young people on various issues,

The echo of embarrassment used to extend only as far as your family, village,

Millions of people, often anonymously, can stab you with their words,

It's led to desensitization and a permissive environment online,

Consider a few prominent examples just from the past six months alone.

for this one story.

सिर्फ़ इस एक खबर के लिये।

And what about the Sony Pictures cyberhacking?

और सोनी पिक्चर की हैकिंग?

The documents which received the most attention

जिन दस्तावेजों को सबसे अधिक देख गया

were private e-mails that had maximum public embarrassment value.

वो निजी ईमेल था जिनमे सबसे ज्यादा शमिंदा करने की क्षमता थी।

मगर प्रताडना के इस कल्चर में,

But in this culture of humiliation,

there is another kind of price tag attached to public shaming.

सार्वजनिक शमिंदगी से प्राइस-टैग भी जुडे है

The price does not measure the cost to the victim,

और ये प्राइस-टैग पीडित द्वारा चुकाई गयी कीमत को नही नापते,

which Tyler and too many others --

जो टाइलर और कई और लोगों को,

notably, women, minorities and members of the LGBTQ community --

खासकर, औरतो और अल्प-संख्यकोंको चुकानी पडती है।

और एल.जी.बी.टी.क्यू लोगों ने चुकाई है,

have paid,

but the price measures the profit of those who prey on them.

मगर ये प्राइस-टैग बखूबी नापता है इस से पैदा होने वाले मुनाफ़े को।

दूसरों पर किया गया हमला जैसे कच्चा माल है,

This invasion of others is a raw material,

efficiently and ruthlessly mined, packaged and sold at a profit.

हमला जो क्रूर्ता और दक्षता से होता है, और पैकेज कर के मुनाफ़े में बेचा जाता है

एक बाज़ार विकसित हुआ है जहाँ सार्वजनिक शमिंदगी बिकती है

A marketplace has emerged where public humiliation is a commodity,

और प्रताडना एक इंडस्ट्री बन गयी है।

and shame is an industry.

और पैसा बनता कैसे है?

How is the money made?

Clicks.

क्लिक्स से।

The more shame, the more clicks.

जितनी शर्मिंदगी, उतने क्लिक्स।

The more clicks, the more advertising dollars.

जितने क्लिक्स, उतने विज्ञापनी डॉलर।

We're in a dangerous cycle.

हम खतरनाक भँवरजाल में हैं।

The more we click on this kind of gossip,

जितना ही हम इस तरह की चीजों को क्लिक करेंगे,

the more numb we get to the human lives behind it.

उतना हे संवेदनशील हम होंगे, उन खबरों के पीछे छुपे इंसानों के प्रति,

And the more numb we get, the more we click.

और जितन हम संवेदना हीन हेगे, उतना ही हम क्लिक करेंगे।

All the while,

और पूरे समय, कोई इस से पैसा कमा रहा होगा

someone is making money off of the back of someone else's suffering.

किसी और के दुख परेशानी और उत्पीडन के ज़रिये।

With every click, we make a choice.

हर क्लिक के ज़रिये हम एक विकल्प चुनते हैं

The more we saturate our culture with public shaming,

जितना ही हम अपने क्लचर को सार्वजनिक शमिंदगी से भरेंगे,

the more accepted it is,

उतना ही स्वीकार्य ये होती जायेगी,

the more we will see behavior like cyberbullying, trolling,

और उतनी ही साइबर-बुलींग हम देखेंगे,

उतनी ही हैकिंग, और धमकीगर्दी।

some forms of hacking

और ऑनलाइन उत्पीडन।

and online harassment.

Why? Because they all have humiliation at their cores.

क्यों? क्योंकि इन सबके जडोंमें शर्मिंदगी है।

This behavior is a symptom of the culture we've created.

ये बर्ताव उस कल्चर का लक्षण है जो हमने रचा है

Just think about it.

थोडा सोच कर देखिये।

Changing behavior begins with evolving beliefs.

बर्ताव में बदलाव शुरु होता है बदलते मूलोंसे।

We've seen that to be true with racism, homophobia

हमने ये होते देखा है रेसिस्म, होमोफ़ोबिया,

and plenty of other biases,

और ऐसे ही कई और चीज़ोंमें , आज और इतिहास में।

today and in the past.

As we've changed beliefs about same-sex marriage,

और हमारे नज़्ररियों मे बदलाव आया है - सम-लैंगिक शादियों को ले कर।

more people have been offered equal freedoms.

ज्यादा से ज्यादा लोगों को बराबरी मिली है।

When we began valuing sustainability,

जब हम निरंतरता को तवज्जो देने लगते है,

more people began to recycle.

ज्यादा से ज्यादा लोग कूडे को रिसाइकिल करने लगते हैं।

So as far as our culture of humiliation goes,

तो जहाँ तक हमारे कल्चर के प्रताड्ना वाले हिस्से का सवाल है,

what we need is a cultural revolution.

हमे एक सांस्कृतिक आंदोलन की ज़रूरत है।

Public shaming as a blood sport has to stop,

सार्वजनिक शमिर्द्गी का ये खूनी खेल बंद करना ही पडेगा।

and it's time for an intervention on the internet and in our culture.

और समय आ गया है कि इंटरनेट के कल्चर में हस्तक्षेप करने का।

The shift begins with something simple,

शुरुवात किसी छोटी चीज़ से होगी, और ये आसान नहीं होगा।

but it's not easy.

We need to return to a long-held value of compassion,

हमें संवेदनशीलता और सहानुभूति की ओर वापस जाना होगा।

compassion and empathy.

ऑन्लाइन दुनिया में, सहानुभूति और संवेद्ना की गहरी कमी है,

Online, we've got a compassion deficit,

an empathy crisis.

लगभग अकाल है।

Researcher Brené Brown said, and I quote,

"Shame can't survive empathy."

Shame cannot survive empathy.

I've seen some very dark days in my life.

It was the compassion and empathy from my family, friends, professionals

and sometimes even strangers

that saved me.

Even empathy from one person can make a difference.

एक इंसान से आती सहानुभूति भी बडा फ़र्क ला सकती है।

The theory of minority influence,

माइनर्टी इन्फ़्लुएंस की थियरी,

proposed by social psychologist Serge Moscovici,

सामजिक मनोविज्ञानी सेर्गे मोस्कोविसी द्वारा दी गयी है,

says that even in small numbers,

और कहती है कि बहुत कम संख्या में ही सही,

when there's consistency over time,

जब लम्बे समय तक कुछ चले,

change can happen.

तो बडा फ़र्क आ सकता है।

In the online world, we can foster minority influence

ऑन्लाइन दुनिया मे, हम इस माइनर्टी इन्फ़्लुएंस को ला सकते हैं

by becoming upstanders.

खिलाफ़त क्रर के।

To become an upstander means instead of bystander apathy,

खिलाफ़त करने का मतलब है चुपचाप खडे नहीं रह जाना।

we can post a positive comment for someone or report a bullying situation.

हम किसी के लिये सकारत्मक कमेंट कर सकते है, साइबर बुलींग होती देख कर शिकायत दर्ज़ कर सकते हैं।

Trust me, compassionate comments help abate the negativity.

मेरा यकीन मानिये, सकारात्मक कमेंट से नकारात्मक्ता ख्त्म होती है।

We can also counteract the culture by supporting organizations

हम एक खिलाफ़त का कल्चर भी ला सक्ते है उन संस्थाओं को सहारा दे कर

that deal with these kinds of issues,

जो इन मुद्दो पर काम कर रही हैं,

like the Tyler Clementi Foundation in the US;

जैसे कि यू.एस. की टाइलर क्लेमेंटी फ़ाउंडेशन

in the UK, there's Anti-Bullying Pro;

and in Australia, there's PROJECT ROCKIT.

We talk a lot about our right to freedom of expression.

But we need to talk more about our responsibility

मगर हमें ये भी बात करनी होगी कि

फ़्रीडम ऑफ़ एक्स्प्रेशन के प्रति हमारे कर्त्व्य क्या हैं

to freedom of expression.

हम सब चाहते हैं कि हमें सुना जाये

We all want to be heard,

but let's acknowledge the difference between speaking up with intention

मगर उद्देश्य से बोलने में और

and speaking up for attention.

ध्यान आकर्षित करने के लिये बोलने में फ़र्क है

The internet is the superhighway for the id.

इंटरनेट अभिव्यक्ति का सुपर हाई-वे है,

But online, showing empathy to others benefits us all

मगर ऑन्लाइन, दूसरों के प्रति संवेदनशील होने से

हम सबका भला होगा, और एक बेहतर, सुरक्षित दुनिया कायम होगी।

and helps create a safer and better world.

We need to communicate online with compassion,

हमें ऑन्लाइन बर्ताव में सहानुभूति लानी होगी,

consume news with compassion

समाचारों को संवेदना के साथ कनस्यूम करना होगा,

and click with compassion.

और सोच-समझ कर क्लिक करना होगा।

Just imagine walking a mile in someone else's headline.

फ़र्ज़ कीजिये कि आप किसी और के हेड-लाइन में एक मील चल रहे हैं।

I'd like to end on a personal note.

मै दिल की बात कह कर जाना चाहूँगी

In the past nine months,

पिछले नौ महीनों मे,

the question I've been asked the most is "Why?"

मुझ्से जो प्रश्न सबसे ज्यादा पूछा गया है वो है , "क्यो?"

Why now?

Why was I sticking my head above the parapet?

अब क्यो? अब मैं अपना सर इतने साल के बाद क्यो उठा रही हूँ?

You can read between the lines in those questions,

इन प्रश्नों में निहित बातों को आप समझ सकते है।

and the answer has nothing to do with politics.

और मेरे जवाब का राजनीति से कोई लेना देना नहीं है।

The top-note answer was and is "Because it's time."

मेरा एक ही जवाब है, और वो है कि - अब समय आ गया है।

Time to stop tiptoeing around my past,

समय आ गया है कि मैं अपने अतीत से छुप छुप कर भागना बंद करूँ:

अपमानित हो कर जीने का समय ख्तम हो गया है;

time to stop living a life of opprobrium

and time to take back my narrative.

और समय आ गया है कि मैं अपनी कहानी पर वापस अपना अधिकार पाऊँ

It's also not just about saving myself.

और ये सिर्फ़ मेरे अकेले के बारे में नहीं है।

Anyone who is suffering from shame and public humiliation

कोई भी जो शर्म और सार्वजनिक रूप से उत्पीडित है,

needs to know one thing:

ये एक बात जान ले:

You can survive it.

कि वो उस से लड सकता है और आगे बढ सकता है।

I know it's hard.

मुझे पता है कि ये बहुत मुश्किल है।

It may not be painless, quick or easy,

बहुत दर्द भरा, आसान बिल्कुल भी नहीं, और लम्बा सफ़र।

but you can insist on a different ending to your story.

मगर आप अपनी कहानी को एक अलग अंत दे सकते हैं।

Have compassion for yourself.

अपने प्रति सहानुभूति और संवेदना रख के।

We all deserve compassion

हम सब संवेदना के पात्र हैं,

and to live both online and off in a more compassionate world.

और ऑन्लाइन और ऑफ़्लाइन, संवेदनाशील दुनिया में रहने के हकदार हैं।
