Well, that's kind of an obvious statement up there.

لە ڕاستیدا، ئەوە بەیانێکی ڕوون و ئاشکرایە

I started with that sentence about 12 years ago,

پێش (١٢) ساڵ، من بەو ڕستەیە دەستم پێکرد

and I started in the context

دەستم کرد بە بابەتێک دەربارەی

of developing countries,

ئەو وڵاتانەی کە لە پەرەسەندندان

but you're sitting here from every corner of the world.

بەڵام هەر یەکێک لە ئێوە دانیشتوی سوچێکی ئەم جیهانەن

So if you think of a map of your country,

جا ئەگەر بیر لە نەخشەیەکی ووڵاتەکەتان بکەنەوە

I think you'll realize

وابزانم بۆتان دەردەکەوێت

that for every country on Earth,

کە بۆ هەموو ووڵاتێک لەسەر زەوی

you could draw little circles to say,

دەتوانیت بازنەی بچوک بچوک بکێشیت بۆ ئەوەی بڵێی

"These are places where good teachers won't go."

ئەمە ئەو شوێنانەن کە مامۆستا باشەکان نایانەوێت بڕۆن بۆی

On top of that,

لەسەروو ئەوە وە

those are the places from where trouble comes.

ئەمە ئەو شوێنانەن کە سەرچاوەی دروست بونی کێشەکانن

So we have an ironic problem --

کەواتە کێشەیەکی دوو ڕوومان هەیە

good teachers don't want to go

مامۆستا باشەکان نایانەوێت بڕۆن

to just those places where they're needed the most.

تەنها بۆ ئەو شوێنانەی کە پێویستیان بەوانە

I started in 1999

لە ساڵی (١٩٩٩) دەستم کرد بەوەی

to try and address this problem with an experiment,

بە تاقیکردنەوەیەک چارەسەرێک بۆ ئەم کێشەیە بدۆزمەوە

which was a very simple experiment in New Delhi.

کە تاقیکردنەوەیەکی زۆر سادە بوو لە نیو دەلهی

I basically embedded a computer

لە سەرەتادا کۆمپیوتەرێکم چەسپاند

into a wall of a slum in New Delhi.

بە دیواری کۆڵانێکی هەژار نشین لە نیو دەلهی

The children barely went to school, they didn't know any English --

ڕێژەیەکی کەمی منداڵان دەچوون بۆ قوتابخانە، ئەوان هیچ ئینگلیزیان نەدەزانی

they'd never seen a computer before,

and they didn't know what the internet was.

I connected high speed internet to it -- it's about three feet off the ground --

turned it on and left it there.

After this,

we noticed a couple of interesting things, which you'll see.

But I repeated this all over India

بەڵام لەهەموو هیندستاندا من ئەمەم دوبارە کردەوە

and then through

وە دواتریش بە ناو

a large part of the world

بەشێکی فراوانی زەویدا

and noticed

ئەوە تێبینی کرا کە

that children will learn to do

منداڵان ئەو شتانە فێر دەبن

what they want to learn to do.

کە پێویست دەکات بۆ بەکارهێنانی کۆمپیوتەر

This is the first experiment that we did --

ئەمە یەکەم تاقیکردنەوە بوو کە کردمان

eight year-old boy on your right

کوڕێکی تەمەن هەشت ساڵ لە لای ڕاست

teaching his student, a six year-old girl,

قوتابیەکەی خۆی فێر دەکات کە کچێکی شەش ساڵان بوو

and he was teaching her how to browse.

کوڕەکە فێری دەکرد چۆن بەدوای زانیاریدا بگەڕێت

This boy here in the middle of central India --

ئەم کوڕە لێرە لە ناوجەرگەی هیندستان

this is in a Rajasthan village,

ئەمە لادێ ی ڕاجاستانە

where the children recorded their own music

ئەو شوێنەی کە منداڵەکان گۆرانیەکانی خۆیانیان لێ تۆمار دەکرد

and then played it back to each other

وە لەدوایشدا دووبارە گۆرانیەکانیان بۆ یەکتر لێ ئەدایەوە

and in the process,

لە پڕۆسەکەدا

they've enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

ئەوان بۆ خۆیان کاتێکی خۆشیان بەسەر دەبرد

They did all of this in four hours

هەموو ئەمانەیان کرد لە چوار کاتژمێردا

after seeing the computer for the first time.

کە تەنها چوار کاتژمێر بوو کە کۆمپیوتەریان بینی بوو

In another South Indian village,

لە لادێیەکی دیکەی باشوری هیندستان

these boys here

ئەم کوڕانە

had assembled a video camera

پارچەکانی کامێرایەکیان پێکەوە نا

and were trying to take the photograph of a bumble bee.

وە هەوڵیاندا بۆ ئەوەی وێنەی کورەیەکی هەنگ بگرن

They downloaded it from Disney.com,

ئەوان لە لە سایتی دیسنی ئەوەیان دابەزاند

or one of these websites,

یان یەکێک لەم سایتانە

14 days after putting the computer in their village.

لە دوای چواردە ڕۆژ لە دانانی کۆمپیوتەر لە لادێکەیاندا

So at the end of it,

و لە کۆتایدا

we concluded that groups of children

ئێمە بۆمان دەرکەوت منداڵان بە گروپ گروپ

can learn to use computers and the internet on their own,

irrespective of who

or where they were.

At that point, I became a little more ambitious

and decided to see

what else could children do with a computer.

We started off with an experiment in Hyderabad, India,

where I gave a group of children --

they spoke English with a very strong Telugu accent.

I gave them a computer

with a speech-to-text interface,

which you now get free with Windows,

and asked them to speak into it.

وە داوام لێکردن لەبەردەم کۆمپیوتەرەکەدا قسە بکەن

So when they spoke into it,

کاتێک کە قسەیان کرد

the computer typed out gibberish,

کۆمپیوتەرەکە قسەی بێمانای دەنووسی

so they said, "Well, it doesn't understand anything of what we are saying."

جا ئەوان ووتیان، کۆمپیوتەرەکە لە هیچ قسەیەکی ئێمە تێناگات

So I said, "Yeah, I'll leave it here for two months.

وتم باشە، بۆ ماوەی دوو مانگ لێرە بەجێی دەهێڵم

Make yourself understood

وا لە خۆت بکە کە

to the computer."

کۆمپیوتەرەکە لێت تێبگات لە

So the children said, "How do we do that."

منداڵەکان وتیان: چۆن ئێمە ئەوە بکەین؟

And I said,

وتم

"I don't know, actually."

لە ڕاستیدا نازانم

(Laughter)

And I left.

Two months later --

دوو مانگ دواتر

and this is now documented

ئێستا ئەمە بەبەڵگەوە سەلمێندراوە

in the Information Technology

for International Development journal --

that accents had changed

and were remarkably close to the neutral British accent

in which I had trained the speech-to-text synthesizer.

In other words, they were all speaking like James Tooley.

So they could do that on their own.

After that, I started to experiment

with various other things

that they might learn to do on their own.

I got an interesting phone call once from Columbo,

from the late Arthur C. Clarke,

لە لایەن خوالێخۆش بوو ئارسەر س. کلارک

who said, "I want to see what's going on."

ئەو وتی، ئەمەوێت بزانم چی ڕوودەدات

And he couldn't travel, so I went over there.

ئەو نەیدەتوانی گەش بکات، لەبەرئەوەی خۆم ڕۆشتم بۆ لای

He said two interesting things,

ئەو دوو شتی سەرنج ڕاکێشی وت

"A teacher that can be replaced by a machine should be."

یەکەمیان: مامۆستایەک کە ئامێرێک بتوانێت جێی بگرێتەوە، با جێی بگرێتەوە

The second thing he said was that,

دوهەمین شت کە وتی ئەوە بوو

"If children have interest,

ئەگەر منداڵان حەزیان هەبێت

then education happens."

ڕۆشنبیری سەرهەڵدەدا

And I was doing that in the field,

من خۆشم هەر ئەوەم دەکرد

so every time I would watch it and think of him.

جا هەموو کاتێک سەیری دەکەم بیر لەو دەکەمەوە

ئارسەر س. کلارک: ئەوان بەدڵنیاییەوە دەتوانن

help people,

کە یارمەتی خەڵک بدەن

because children quickly learn to navigate

لەبەرئەوەی منداڵەکان بە خێرایی فێر دەبن کە بگەڕێن بە ناو

the web and find things which interest them.

ئینتەرنێتدا و ئەو شتانە بدۆزنەوە کە بەلایانەوە سەرنج ڕاکێشە

And when you've got interest, then you have education.

Sugata Mitra: I took the experiment to South Africa.

This is a 15 year-old boy.

ئەمە کوڕێکی تەمەن پانزە ساڵە

(Video) Boy: ... just mention, I play games

کوڕ: تەنها ناوی هێناوە، من یاری دەکەم

like animals,

وەکو ئاژەڵەکان

and I listen to music.

گوێشم لە مۆسیقا دەگرت

SM: And I asked him, "Do you send emails?"

سوگاتا میترا: لێم پرسی، ئیمەیڵ دەنێریت؟

And he said, "Yes, and they hop across the ocean."

کوڕەکە وتی: بەڵێ، ئیمەیڵەکان بازیان بەسەر زەریاکەدا داوە

This is in Cambodia,

ئەمە لە کامبۆدیایە

rural Cambodia --

دێهاتە نزیکەکانی شار لە نزیک کامبۆدیا

a fairly silly arithmetic game,

یاریەکی تاڕادەیەک بێسود و بیرکاریانەیە

which no child would play inside the classroom or at home.

کە هیچ منداڵێک نە لەماڵەوە و نە لە پۆلدا ئەو یاریە ناکات

They would, you know, throw it back at you.

ئەوان دەیکەن، وەک دەزانن ئەوە دەدەنەوە بە ڕووتدا

They'd say, "This is very boring."

ئەوان دەڵێن، ئەمە زۆر بێزارکەرە

If you leave it on the pavement

ئەگەر تۆ لەسەر شۆستەکان جێی بهێڵیت

and if all the adults go away,

وە ئەگەر هەموو هەرزەکارەکان دوور بکەونەوە

then they will show off with each other

لە دواییدا هەمویان خۆیان بەسەر یەکدا فش دەکەنەوە

about what they can do.

دەربارەی ئەوەی کە لە توانایاندایە چیبکەن

This is what these children are doing.

ئەمانە ئەو شتانەن کە منداڵەکان دەتوانن بیکەن

They are trying to multiply, I think.

ئەوان لە هەوڵی پەرە پێدانان، وابزانم

And all over India,

لە هەموو هیندستان

at the end of about two years,

لە کۆتایی دا، کە دوو ساڵێکی خایاند

children were beginning to Google their homework.

منداڵەکان دەبێت لە (گوگڵدا) بەدوای ئەرکەکانی ماڵەوەیاندا دەگەڕان

As a result, the teachers reported

لە ئەنجامی ئەوەدا ، مامۆستاکانیان دەیانگوت

tremendous improvements in their English --

کە ئینگلیزیەکەیان زۆر باش بوە

(Laughter)

rapid improvement and all sorts of things.

پەرەسەندنێکی خێرا لەهەموو شتەکاندا

They said, "They have become really deep thinkers and so on and so forth.

ئەوان وتیان: ئەم منداڵانە بونەتە بیرمەندی زۆر باش

And indeed they had.

I mean, if there's stuff on Google,

مەبەستم ئەوەیە، ئەگەر شت هەبێت لە گوگڵ

why would you need to stuff it into your head?

So at the end of the next four years,

لە کۆتایی چوار ساڵی داهاتودا

I decided that groups of children can navigate the internet

بڕیارمدا کە منداڵان دەتوانن بە نێو ئینتەرنێتدا بگەڕێن

to achieve educational objectives on their own.

تاکو خۆیان پێداویستیە ڕۆشنبیریەکانیان بەدەست بهێنن

At that time, a large amount of money

لەو کاتەدا، بڕێکی زۆری پارە

had come into Newcastle University

هێنرا بۆ زانکۆی نیوکاسڵ

to improve schooling in India.

بۆ پەرە پێدانی پەروەردەی قوتابخانە لە هیندستان

So Newcastle gave me a call. I said, "I'll do it from Delhi."

زانکۆی نیوکاسڵ پەیوەندیان پێوە کردم، وتم من لە نیودەلهیەوە دەست پێدەکەم

They said, "There's no way you're going to handle

وتیان، بەهیچ شێوەیەک تۆ ناتوانی

a million pounds-worth of University money

بەهای یەک ملیۆن پاوەند لە پارەی زانکۆ

sitting in Delhi."

So in 2006,

I bought myself a heavy overcoat

and moved to Newcastle.

I wanted to test the limits

of the system.

The first experiment I did out of Newcastle

was actually done in India.

لەهیندستان بە ئەنجام گەیاند

And I set myself and impossible target:

خۆم بۆ ئامانجێکی مەحاڵ ئامادەکرد، لە بارەی

can Tamil speaking

ئایا (تامیل) دەتوانێت

12-year-old children

قسە لەگەڵ منداڵی (١٢) ساڵاندا بکات

in a South Indian village

لە دێهاتەکانی باشوری ئەفەریقا

teach themselves biotechnology

کە خۆیان، خۆیان فێری بەکارهێنانی (بایۆ تەکنەلۆژی) تەکنەلۆژیای ژیان بکەن

in English on their own?

بە زمانی ئینگلیزی و بە هەوڵی خۆیان؟

And I thought, I'll test them, they'll get a zero --

من وامزانی، تاقیان دەکەمەوە هەموویان سفر دەهێنن

I'll give the materials, I'll come back and test them --

کەرەستەکانیان دەدەمێ و دەگەڕێمەوە تاکو تاقیان بکەمەوە

they get another zero,

ئەو کاتە سفرێکی تر دەهێنن

I'll go back and say, "Yes, we need teachers for certain things."

دەگەڕێمەوە و دەڵێم بەڵێ، ئێمە مامۆستامان بۆ چەند شتێکی تایبەت دەوێت

I called in 26 children.

بیست و شەش منداڵم بانگ کرد

They all came in there, and I told them

هەموویان هاتن بۆ ئەوێ و پێم وتن

that there's some really difficult stuff on this computer.

هەندێک شتی قورس لەسەر ئەم کۆمپیوتەرە هەیە

I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't understand anything.

سەسام نابم ئەگەر هیچ شتێکی لێ تێنەگەشتن

It's all in English, and I'm going.

هەمووی بە ئینگلیزیەوە منیش دەڕۆم

(Laughter)

So I left them with it.

بۆیە ئەوابن لەگەڵ کۆمپیوتەرەکەدا بەجێهێشت

I came back after two months,

دوای دوو مانگ گەڕامەوە

and the 26 children marched in looking very, very quiet.

I said, "Well, did you look at any of the stuff?"

وتم، باشە، سەیری هیچ شتێکتان کرد؟

They said, "Yes, we did."

"Did you understand anything?" "No, nothing."

هیچ شتێک تێگەشتن؟ نا، هیچ شتێک

So I said,

"Well, how long did you practice on it

before you decided you understood nothing?"

They said, "We look at it every day."

So I said, "For two months, you were looking at stuff you didn't understand?"

وتم، بۆ ماوەی دوو مانگ، ئێوە سەیری شتەکەتان کرد و تێنەگەشتن؟

So a 12 year-old girl raises her hand and says,

کچێکی تەمەن (١٢) ساڵ دەستی بەرز کردەوە و

literally,

بە لەبەر وتی

"Apart from the fact that improper replication of the DNA molecule

جگە لەو ڕاستیەی کە دروست بوونەوەی هەڵەی خانە دەماریەکانی DNA

causes genetic disease,

دەبێتە هۆی توشبونی نەخۆشی بۆ ماوەیی

we've understood nothing else."

It took me three years to publish that.

سێ ساڵم پێچو تا ئەوەم بڵاو کردەوە

It's just been published in the British Journal of Educational Technology.

ئەوە تەنها لە ڕۆژنامەی فێرکاری تەکنەلۆژیا لە بەریتانیا بڵاو کراوەتەوە

One of the referees who refereed the paper said,

یەکێک لەو بڕیاردەرانەی کە بڕیاردەری ڕۆژنامکە بوو، وتی

"It's too good to be true,"

which was not very nice.

Well, one of the girls had taught herself

زۆر باشە، یەکێک لە کچەکان خۆی فێر کردبوو

to become the teacher.

کە ببێت بە مامۆستا

And then that's her over there.

ئەوە ئەو کچەیە

Remember, they don't study English.

لە بیرتان بێت، ئەوان ئینگلیزی ناخوێنن

I edited out the last bit when I asked, "Where is the neuron?"

لە کۆتایدا پرسیم، دەمارەخانەی مێشک لە کوێدایە؟

and she says, "The neuron? The neuron,"

کچەکە وتی، دەماری خانەی مێشک؟ دەماری خانەی مێشک

and then she looked and did this.

لە داویدا سەیری کرد و وەڵامی دامەوە

Whatever the expression, it was not very nice.

وەڵامەکەی هەر چیەک بێت جوان نەبوو

So their scores had gone up from zero to 30 percent,

نمرەکانیان لە سفرەوە بەرز بۆوە بۆ لە %٣٠

which is an educational impossibility under the circumstances.

لە وەها بارودۆخێکدا ئەمە لەبواری پەروەردەدا

But 30 percent is not a pass.

بەڵام لە %٣٠ دەرچون نیە

So I found that they had a friend,

بۆ دەرکەوت کە ئەوان هاوڕێیەکیان هەیە

a local accountant, a young girl,

کچێکی گەنجە، کە کاری ژمێریاری ناوخۆیی دەکات

and they played football with her.

ئەوان یاری دووگۆڵیشیان لەگەڵ دەکرد

I asked that girl, "Would you teach them

منیش لەو کچەم پرسی : ئایا هێندەی پێویست

enough biotechnology to pass?"

بابەتی تەکنەلۆژیای ژیانی فێری ئەوانی تر دەکەیت کە دەربچن ؟

And she said, "How would I do that? I don't know the subject."

ئەویش وتی : من چۆن ئەوە بکەم، من ئەو بابەتە نازانم

I said, "No, use the method of the grandmother."

منیش پێم وت : نا، تۆش ڕێگەی داپیرە بەکار بهێنە

She said, "What's that?"

وتی : ئەو ڕێگەیە چی یە ؟

I said, "Well, what you've got to do

پێم وت : لە ڕاستیدا، ئەوەی کە تۆ لەسەرتە بیکەیت

is stand behind them

ئەوەیە کە لە پشتیانەوە بوەستیت

and admire them all the time.

هەمیشە هانیان بدەیت

Just say to them, 'That's cool. That's fantastic.

تەنها پێیان بڵێ : ئافەرین، ئەوە زۆر باشە

What is that? Can you do that again? Can you show me some more?'"

ئەوە چی یە ؟ دەتوانیت جارێکی تر دووبارەی کەیتەوە ؟ دەتوانیت شتی ترم نیشان بدەیت ؟

She did that for two months.

The scores went up to 50,

which is what the posh schools of New Delhi,

کە هەمان ڕیژەی فێربووی قوتابخانە بەناوبانگەکانی نیو دەلهی بوو

with a trained biotechnology teacher were getting.

لەژێر دەستی مامۆستای مەشق پێکراوی تەکنەلۆژیای ژیانی

So I came back to Newcastle

منیش هاتمەوە بۆ نیو کاسڵ

with these results

بەم کۆمەڵە ئەنجامەوە

and decided

بڕیارمدا

that there was something happening here

کە لەوێ شتێک ڕوو دەدات

that definitely was getting very serious.

کە بەدڵنیاییەوە زۆر گرنگە

So, having experimented in all sorts of remote places,

دوای ئەم هەمو شوێنە دوورەی کە تاقیکردنەوەم تێدا کردن

I came to the most remote place that I could think of.

چوومە دوورترین شوێن کە هەر بیریشم لێ نەکردبۆوە

Approximately 5,000 miles from Delhi

is the little town of Gateshead.

In Gateshead, I took 32 children

and I started to fine-tune the method.

I made them into groups of four.

Each group of four can use one computer and not four computers."

When I did the experiment, when I did the test,

I suspect because they're discussing with each other.

A single child in front of a single computer

will not do that.

I have further results,

which are almost unbelievable,

of scores which go up with time.

This one, they took only 10 minutes.

I tried a really hard one then.

There was silence for a while,

I think we've just stumbled across

A self-organizing system is one

where a structure appears

without explicit intervention from the outside.

Self-organizing systems also always show emergence,

which is that the system starts to do things,

which it was never designed for.

Which is why you react the way you do,

because it looks impossible.

education is self-organizing system,

where learning is an emergent phenomenon.
