Well, that's kind of an obvious statement up there.

I started with that sentence about 12 years ago,

I think you'll realize

that for every country on Earth,

you could draw little circles to say,

"여긴 좋은 선생님들이 가기 싫어하는 곳이야"라고

"These are places where good teachers won't go."

말할 수 있다는 걸 아셨을 겁니다.

On top of that,

더욱이,

those are the places from where trouble comes.

그런 장소야말로 문제가 일어나는 곳이죠.

So we have an ironic problem --

아이러니한 문제입니다.

good teachers don't want to go

좋은 선생님들은 정말로 그들을

to just those places where they're needed the most.

필요로 하는 곳에 가고 싶어하지 않는 거죠.

I started in 1999

전 1999년부터 이 문제를

to try and address this problem with an experiment,

which was a very simple experiment in New Delhi.

I basically embedded a computer

into a wall of a slum in New Delhi.

The children barely went to school, they didn't know any English --

they'd never seen a computer before,

and they didn't know what the internet was.

I connected high speed internet to it -- it's about three feet off the ground --

turned it on and left it there.

After this,

we noticed a couple of interesting things, which you'll see.

But I repeated this all over India

This is the first experiment that we did --

eight year-old boy on your right

This boy here in the middle of central India --

this is in a Rajasthan village,

where the children recorded their own music

They did all of this in four hours

In another South Indian village,

14 days after putting the computer in their village.

So at the end of it,

we concluded that groups of children

can learn to use computers and the internet on their own,

At that point, I became a little more ambitious

and decided to see

what else could children do with a computer.

We started off with an experiment in Hyderabad, India,

where I gave a group of children --

they spoke English with a very strong Telugu accent.

그 아이들은 텔루구어 억양이 매우 강한 영어를 쓰는데

I gave them a computer

with a speech-to-text interface,

장치가 달린 컴퓨터를 줬습니다.

which you now get free with Windows,

요즘은 그냥 윈도우즈에 딸려 나오죠.

and asked them to speak into it.

그리고 컴퓨터 앞에서 말해보라고 했습니다.

So when they spoke into it,

the computer typed out gibberish,

컴퓨터는 무의미한 단어들을 내뱉었습니다.

so they said, "Well, it doesn't understand anything of what we are saying."

아이들은 "우리가 말하는 걸 못 알아듣는데요."라고 말하더군요.

So I said, "Yeah, I'll leave it here for two months.

저는 "뭐, 두 달간 여기에 놔 둘게.

Make yourself understood

컴퓨터에게 너희들이 말하는 걸 이해시켜 보렴."

to the computer."

So the children said, "How do we do that."

아이들은 다시 "어떻게요?"라고 묻더군요.

And I said,

"I don't know, actually."

"사실 나도 몰라." 라고 말했습니다.

And I left.

Two months later --

두 달 후,

and this is now documented

in the Information Technology

for International Development journal --

that accents had changed

and were remarkably close to the neutral British accent

in which I had trained the speech-to-text synthesizer.

In other words, they were all speaking like James Tooley.

So they could do that on their own.

After that, I started to experiment

그 이후에 전 다른 다양한 것도

with various other things

그들이 스스로 깨칠 수 있나

that they might learn to do on their own.

알아보기 위해 실험을 했습니다.

I got an interesting phone call once from Columbo,

그러다 스리랑카의 콜롬보에서 흥미로운 전화를 받았습니다.

from the late Arthur C. Clarke,

돌아가신 아서 C. 클라크 경의 전화였는데

who said, "I want to see what's going on."

"무슨 일이 벌어지는지 알고 싶소."라고 하시더군요.

And he couldn't travel, so I went over there.

그분이 여행할 수 없었기에 제가 거기로 갔습니다.

He said two interesting things,

"A teacher that can be replaced by a machine should be."

The second thing he said was that,

"If children have interest,

then education happens."

And I was doing that in the field,

so every time I would watch it and think of him.

This is a 15 year-old boy.

SM: And I asked him, "Do you send emails?"

And he said, "Yes, and they hop across the ocean."

This is in Cambodia,

여기는 캄보디아의

rural Cambodia --

시골 마을입니다.

a fairly silly arithmetic game,

꽤 유치한 산수 게임이라

which no child would play inside the classroom or at home.

교실이나 집에서는 아무도 갖고 놀려 하지 않을 겁니다.

They would, you know, throw it back at you.

아이들한테 준다면 바로 되돌려주면서

They'd say, "This is very boring."

"이거 재미없어요."라고 말하겠죠.

If you leave it on the pavement

만약 이걸 길 위에 놔두고

and if all the adults go away,

어른들이 다 가버리면,

then they will show off with each other

아이들은 이걸로 자기가 할 수 있는 일을

about what they can do.

This is what these children are doing.

They are trying to multiply, I think.

곱셈을 하려는 것 같네요.

And all over India,

2년이 다 되어갈 때쯤에는

at the end of about two years,

인도 전역에서

children were beginning to Google their homework.

아이들이 숙제를 구글에서 검색하기 시작하더군요.

As a result, the teachers reported

그 결과 선생님들은 아이들의 영어가

tremendous improvements in their English --

엄청나게 향상되었다고 했습니다.

rapid improvement and all sorts of things.

급격하게 향상되고 뭐 그냥 전부 다요.

They said, "They have become really deep thinkers and so on and so forth.

"아이들이 정말로 깊게 생각하게 되고 어쩌구 저쩌구"라고 보고했죠.

(Laughter)

And indeed they had.

그리고 실제로도 그렇게 됐구요.

I mean, if there's stuff on Google,

그러니까, 구글에 내용이 있는데

why would you need to stuff it into your head?

그걸 굳이 머리속에 집어넣을 필요가 있나요?

So at the end of the next four years,

그러고 4년이 지날 무렵

I decided that groups of children can navigate the internet

저는 웹을 쓸 줄 아는 아이들이 스스로 교육 목표를

to achieve educational objectives on their own.

이루도록 하자고 생각했습니다.

At that time, a large amount of money

당시 뉴캐슬 대학에

had come into Newcastle University

인도 학교교육을 발전시키는 명목으로

to improve schooling in India.

많은 돈이 들어왔거든요.

So Newcastle gave me a call. I said, "I'll do it from Delhi."

대학에서 제게 전화를 했길래 "델리에서 해 보죠"라고 했더니

They said, "There's no way you're going to handle

"수백만 파운드나 되는 대학 돈을

a million pounds-worth of University money

델리에 앉아서 쓰게 할 수는 없습니다."라고

sitting in Delhi."

그러더라구요.

So in 2006,

I bought myself a heavy overcoat

and moved to Newcastle.

I wanted to test the limits

The first experiment I did out of Newcastle

was actually done in India.

And I set myself and impossible target:

12-year-old children

in a South Indian village

teach themselves biotechnology

생명공학을 스스로

in English on their own?

영어로 깨칠 수 있을까?

And I thought, I'll test them, they'll get a zero --

제 생각은 이랬죠. 우선 시험을 봅니다. 빵점을 맞겠죠.

I'll give the materials, I'll come back and test them --

수업 재료를 줍니다. 다시 와서 시험을 보죠.

they get another zero,

다시 빵점을 맞습니다.

I'll go back and say, "Yes, we need teachers for certain things."

그럼 전 대학으로 돌아가서 "어떤 일에는 선생님들이 필요합니다."라고 보고하는 거죠.

I called in 26 children.

26명의 아이들을 모았습니다.

They all came in there, and I told them

다들 모여있는 자리에서 그들에게 말했습니다.

that there's some really difficult stuff on this computer.

"이 컴퓨터에 들어 있는 건 정말 어려워.

I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't understand anything.

아무것도 이해하지 못한다고 해도 내가 놀라진 않을거야.

It's all in English, and I'm going.

다 영어로 되어 있어. 그럼 난 간다."

So I left them with it.

그러곤 컴퓨터를 두고 전 떠났죠.

I came back after two months,

두 달 후 돌아왔습니다.

and the 26 children marched in looking very, very quiet.

26명의 아이들이 조용히 열을 맞춰 걸어오더군요.

I said, "Well, did you look at any of the stuff?"

"그래. 뭘 좀 봤니?"

They said, "Yes, we did."

"네. 봤어요."

"Did you understand anything?" "No, nothing."

"좀 이해가 되니?" "아뇨."

So I said,

그래서 물었습니다.

"Well, how long did you practice on it

"흠, 얼마나 공부하고서

before you decided you understood nothing?"

아무것도 모르겠다고 생각한 거지?"

They said, "We look at it every day."

"매일요."라고 답하더군요.

So I said, "For two months, you were looking at stuff you didn't understand?"

"두 달 동안 이해하지도 못하는 걸 계속 들여다 봤다고?"라고 물었죠.

So a 12 year-old girl raises her hand and says,

그러자 열두 살 난 소녀가 손을 들고 말하더군요.

literally,

똑같이 말할게요.

"Apart from the fact that improper replication of the DNA molecule

"DNA 분자의 부정확한 복제가

causes genetic disease,

유전병을 일으킨다는 거 말고는

we've understood nothing else."

아무것도 이해할 수 없었어요."

It took me three years to publish that.

이 결과를 발표하는데 3년이 걸렸습니다.

It's just been published in the British Journal of Educational Technology.

최근에야 영국 교육기술 학술지에 발표되었어요.

One of the referees who refereed the paper said,

이 논문을 심사한 심사위원 중 한 명은

"It's too good to be true,"

"너무 결과가 좋아 사실이라고 보기 어렵다."고까지 했는데

which was not very nice.

이건 그다지 좋은 말이 아니죠.

Well, one of the girls had taught herself

이렇게 스스로 깨쳐나갔던 소녀가

to become the teacher.

선생님이 되었습니다.

And then that's her over there.

바로 이 소녀입니다.

Remember, they don't study English.

영어 공부가 아니란 걸 다시 한 번 말씀드리겠습니다.

I edited out the last bit when I asked, "Where is the neuron?"

편집된 뒷부분에 제가 "신경이 어디에 있지?"라고 묻자

and she says, "The neuron? The neuron,"

그녀는 “신경? 신경?” 이러더니

and then she looked and did this.

저를 쳐다보더니 머리를 손으로 툭툭 치더군요.

Whatever the expression, it was not very nice.

그다지 칭찬할 만한 버릇은 아니죠.

So their scores had gone up from zero to 30 percent,

어쨌든 아이들의 점수는 0점에서 30점으로 올랐고,

which is an educational impossibility under the circumstances.

이건 저 상황에선 교육적으로 불가능한 결과였습니다.

But 30 percent is not a pass.

하지만 30점은 합격이 아니죠.

So I found that they had a friend,

그러다 전 아이들과 함께 축구도 하고

a local accountant, a young girl,

친구처럼 지내며 그 지역에서 회계사로 일하는

and they played football with her.

젊은 여자분을 알게 되었습니다.

I asked that girl, "Would you teach them

그 여자분에게 "아이들이 생명공학에서 합격점을 받을 수 있게

enough biotechnology to pass?"

좀 가르쳐 주시겠습니까?"라고 말했습니다.

And she said, "How would I do that? I don't know the subject."

"어떻게요? 전 생명공학을 몰라요."라고 하더군요.

I said, "No, use the method of the grandmother."

전 "그냥 할머니들이 하시듯 하면 돼요."라고 말했습니다.

She said, "What's that?"

"그게 어떻게 하는 건데요?"

I said, "Well, what you've got to do

"그러니까 하실 일은

is stand behind them

그냥 애들 뒤에 서서

and admire them all the time.

항상 응원하는 거예요.

Just say to them, 'That's cool. That's fantastic.

'멋진걸. 끝내 주네. 저건 뭐야?'

What is that? Can you do that again? Can you show me some more?'"

다시 할 수 있어? 좀 더 보여 주면 안되?'라고 말하는 거예요."

She did that for two months.

그녀는 두 달 동안 아이들을 가르쳤습니다.

The scores went up to 50,

점수는 50점으로 올랐는데

which is what the posh schools of New Delhi,

with a trained biotechnology teacher were getting.

So I came back to Newcastle

with these results

and decided

that there was something happening here

that definitely was getting very serious.

So, having experimented in all sorts of remote places,

I came to the most remote place that I could think of.

Approximately 5,000 miles from Delhi

is the little town of Gateshead.

영국의 작은 마을 게이츠헤드입니다.

In Gateshead, I took 32 children

게이츠헤드에서 32명의 아이들을 데리고

and I started to fine-tune the method.

I made them into groups of four.

애들을 네 명씩 한 조로 나누었어요.

I said, "You make your own groups of four.

"너희들끼리 네 명으로 된 조를 만드렴.

Each group of four can use one computer and not four computers."

Remember, from the Hole in the Wall.

벽에 구멍 뚫고 컴퓨터를 뒀던 거 기억 나시죠?

"You can exchange groups.

"조는 왔다갔다 할 수 있어.

You can walk across to another group,

네가 속한 조가 마음에 들지 않거나 하면

if you don't like your group, etc.

그냥 다른 조가 있는 곳으로 가도 돼.

You can go to another group, peer over their shoulders, see what they're doing,

다른 조에 가서 어깨 너머로 슬쩍 걔네들이 뭘 하는지 보고

come back to you own group and claim it as your own work."

원래 속한 조로 돌아와서 네가 알아낸 거라고 우겨."

And I explained to them

그리고 저는 아이들에게

that, you know, a lot of scientific research is done using that method.

The children enthusiastically got after me and said,

I gave them six GCSE questions.

The first group -- the best one --

solved everything in 20 minutes.

The worst, in 45.

가장 느렸던 조는 45분이 걸렸습니다.

They used everything that they knew --

아이들은 스스로 알고 있던 모든 걸 사용했죠.

news groups, Google, Wikipedia,

뉴스그룹, 구글, 위키피디아,

Ask Jeeves, etc.

Ask Jeeves(네이버 지식인과 비슷한 서비스), 기타등등...

The teachers said, "Is this deep learning?"

선생님들이 "이게 심도있는 학습일까요?"라고 하더군요.

I said, "Well, let's try it.

"뭐. 한번 해 보죠.

I'll come back after two months.

두 달 뒤에 돌아올 겁니다.

We'll give them a paper test --

아이들에게 컴퓨터도 없고 서로 물어보는 것도 없는

no computers, no talking to each other, etc."

지필시험을 치게 해 보죠."라고 답했습니다.

The average score when I'd done it with the computers and the groups

컴퓨터가 있고 조를 구성했을 때 본 시험의 평균점수는

was 76 percent.

76점이었습니다.

When I did the experiment, when I did the test,

두 달 뒤에 한 실험에서, 시험에서,

after two months, the score

아이들이 받은 평균 점수도

was 76 percent.

There was photographic recall

아이들의 머리 안에 그 내용들이

inside the children,

사진처럼 생생하게 남아있던 거죠.

I suspect because they're discussing with each other.

서로 의논했기 때문에 그런게 아닐까 생각합니다.

A single child in front of a single computer

컴퓨터 앞에 혼자 앉아 있는 아이는

will not do that.

그러지 못할 거에요.

I have further results,

점수가 시간에 따라 오르는

which are almost unbelievable,

거의 믿을 수 없는 정도의

of scores which go up with time.

이후의 결과도 가지고 있습니다.

Because their teachers say

그 이유는 선생님들에 따르면

that after the session is over,

아이들이 수업이 끝난 뒤에도

the children continue to Google further.

계속 구글을 이용했기 때문이라고 합니다.

Here in Britain, I put out a call

여기 영국에서 저는

for British grandmothers,

그때까지의 경험을 바탕으로

after my Kuppam experiment.

영국 할머니들을 모았습니다.

Well, you know,

뭐 아시다시피

they're very vigorous people, British grandmothers.

영국 할머니들이 매우 활기가 넘치시잖아요.

200 of them volunteered immediately.

200분이 곧바로 자원해 주시더군요.

The deal was that they would give me

할머니들께 뭘 부탁드렸냐 하면

one hour of broadband time,

일 주일에 한 번 한 시간만

sitting in their homes,

댁에 있는 컴퓨터 앞에 앉아

one day in a week.

인터넷을 해달라는 거였습니다.

So they did that,

그랬더니 그렇게 해 주시더군요.

and over the last two years,

지난 이 년이 넘는 시간 동안

over 600 hours of instruction

has happened over Skype,

넘는 교육이 이루어졌습니다.

using what my students call the granny cloud.

제 학생들이 '클라우드 할머니'라고 부르는 시스템을 통해서요.

The granny cloud sits over there.

I can beam them to whichever school I want to.

You know, stuff which I don't know anything about.

Two children watch a TEDTalk.

It's pretty simple stuff.

This is what I'm building now --

SOLE이라고 합니다. 자기 구조화 학습 환경.

The furniture is designed

이 기구는 아이들이 커다란 고성능 모니터 앞에 앉아

so that children can sit in front of big, powerful screens,

광대역 인터넷을 사용할 수 있도록 설계되었습니다.

big broadband connections, but in groups.

단 여러 명이 사용해야 합니다.

If they want, they can call the granny cloud.

필요하다면 클라우드 할머니를 부를 수도 있어요.

This is a SOLE in Newcastle.

뉴캐슬에 있는 SOLE입니다.

The mediator is from Pune, India.

인도에 있는 사람이 중간에서 연결해 주고 있어요.

So how far can we go? One last little bit and I'll stop.

어떤 걸 더 해 볼 수 있을까요? 한 가지만 더 하고 마치죠.

I went to Turin in May.

5월에 이탈리아의 토리노에 갔습니다.

I sent all the teachers away from my group of 10 year-old students.

10살짜리 학생들이 있는 교실에서 선생님들을 모두 내보냈습니다.

I speak only English, they speak only Italian,

전 영어밖에 못 하고 아이들은 이탈리아어밖에 못 하니

so we had no way to communicate.

우리는 의사소통할 방법이 없었죠.

I started writing English questions on the blackboard.

전 칠판에 영어로 된 질문을 쓰기 시작했습니다. "공룡은 어째서 다 사라졌을까?"

The children looked at it and said, "What?"

아이들이 들여다보더니 "네?" 라더군요.

I said, "Well, do it."

전 "뭐, 그냥 해 보자."라고 말했습니다.

They typed it into Google, translated it into Italian,

아이들은 구글에 그걸 집어넣고, 이탈리아어로 번역해서

went back into Italian Google.

이탈리아어 구글로 가더군요.

Fifteen minutes later --

15분 후...

next question: where is Calcutta?

다음 질문: 캘커타는 어디에 있지?

This one, they took only 10 minutes.

이건 10분만에 풀더군요.

I tried a really hard one then.

그래서 정말 어려운 걸 내 봤습니다.

Who was Pythagoras, and what did he do?

피타고라스가 누구고, 그 사람이 뭘 했지?

There was silence for a while,

잠시 아이들이 조용해지더니

then they said, "You've spelled it wrong.

"철자가 틀렸어요. Pitagora에요."

It's Pitagora."

라고 말하더군요.

And then,

그리고,

in 20 minutes,

20분 안에

the right-angled triangles began to appear on the screens.

모니터에 직각삼각형이 나타나기 시작했습니다.

This sent shivers up my spine.

등줄기에 소름이 돋더군요.

These are 10 year-olds.

얘들은 열 살배기입니다.

Text: In another 30 minutes they would reach the Theory of Relativity. And then?

텍스트: 30분만 더 줬다면 상대성 이론도 알아낼 수 있겠죠. 시간을 더욱 더 준다면?

I think we've just stumbled across

제 생각에 우리는 이제 막

a self-organizing system.

자기구조화 시스템을 마주한 것 같습니다.

A self-organizing system is one

자기구조화 시스템이란

where a structure appears

외부의 직접적 간섭 없이

without explicit intervention from the outside.

구조가 나타나는 시스템을 일컫는 말입니다.

Self-organizing systems also always show emergence,

자기구조화 시스템은 언제나 창발현상을 보이는데

which is that the system starts to do things,

이건 어떤 시스템이 원래 설계에는 없던

which it was never designed for.

뭔가를 하기 시작하는 걸 의미합니다.

Which is why you react the way you do,

이것은 불가능해 보이기 때문에

because it looks impossible.

여러분이 지금 보이시는 그런 반응이 나타나는 거죠.

I think I can make a guess now --

이쯤 되면 유추할 수 있을 것 같습니다.

education is self-organizing system,

교육은 자기구조화 시스템이고

where learning is an emergent phenomenon.

학습은 창발적인 현상입니다.

It'll take a few years to prove it, experimentally,

이걸 실험으로 증명하는데 수 년이 걸리겠지만

but I'm going to try.

한 번 해 볼 생각입니다.

But in the meanwhile, there is a method available.

그 사이라도 이런 건 해 볼 수 있겠죠.

One billion children, we need 100 million mediators --

십억 명의 아이들에게 일억 명의 조정자를 둡니다.

there are many more than that on the planet --

그런 사람들은 지구상에 훨씬 많이 있지요.

10 million SOLEs,

그리고 천만 개의 SOLE,

180 billion dollars and 10 years.

1,800억 달러와 10년의 기간이 필요합니다.

We could change everything.

우리는 모든 것을 바꿀 수 있습니다.
