Well, that's kind of an obvious statement up there.

I started with that sentence about 12 years ago,

and I started in the context

So if you think of a map of your country,

I think you'll realize

that for every country on Earth,

you could draw little circles to say,

"These are places where good teachers won't go."

「優秀な教師の行きたがらない地域がある」

On top of that,

そんな場所は

those are the places from where trouble comes.

問題の起きる地域でもあるのです

So we have an ironic problem --

だから皮肉にも

good teachers don't want to go

優秀な教師というのは

to just those places where they're needed the most.

最も必要とされる地域に行きたがりません

I started in 1999

この問題に取り組むために

to try and address this problem with an experiment,

1999年からインドのニューデリーで

which was a very simple experiment in New Delhi.

とても簡単な実験を始めました

I basically embedded a computer

端的にいえば ニューデリーのスラム街で

into a wall of a slum in New Delhi.

コンピューターを壁に埋め込んだのです

The children barely went to school, they didn't know any English --

子どもたちは学校に通えないので英語を話せません

they'd never seen a computer before,

コンピューターを見たこともなく

and they didn't know what the internet was.

インターネットなど知りもしません

I connected high speed internet to it -- it's about three feet off the ground --

これに高速のネット回線をつなげて

turned it on and left it there.

After this,

電源を入れておいたところ

we noticed a couple of interesting things, which you'll see.

But I repeated this all over India

インドのいたるところで試して

and then through

a large part of the world

世界中で試してみました

and noticed

that children will learn to do

what they want to learn to do.

This is the first experiment that we did --

eight year-old boy on your right

teaching his student, a six year-old girl,

and he was teaching her how to browse.

This boy here in the middle of central India --

こちらは中央インドの中部にいた少年

this is in a Rajasthan village,

こちらはラージャスターン村です

where the children recorded their own music

子どもたちは自分たちの音楽を録音して

and then played it back to each other

再生し合ったりして

and in the process,

そんなことをしながら

they've enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

すっかり夢中になりました

They did all of this in four hours

初めてコンピューターを目にしてから

after seeing the computer for the first time.

４時間で一通りできるようになりました

In another South Indian village,

南インドにある別の村では

these boys here

少年たちが

had assembled a video camera

ビデオカメラを組み立てて

and were trying to take the photograph of a bumble bee.

マルハナバチを撮影しようとしていました

They downloaded it from Disney.com,

ディズニーのサイトなどから

or one of these websites,

ダウンロードしたものです

14 days after putting the computer in their village.

村にコンピューターを設置して14日目のことでした

So at the end of it,

このようなことから

we concluded that groups of children

コンピューターの操作やウェブサイトの見方は

can learn to use computers and the internet on their own,

子どもたちが自分で学習できるという結論に至りました

irrespective of who

誰にでも可能で

or where they were.

住む場所も関係ありません

At that point, I became a little more ambitious

これで 少し期待が湧きましたので

and decided to see

コンピューターを使って子どもたちが

what else could children do with a computer.

何か別のことを出来るか調べることにしました

We started off with an experiment in Hyderabad, India,

まずは インドのハイデラバードで

where I gave a group of children --

かなりテルグ語なまりの強い英語を話す子どもたちに

they spoke English with a very strong Telugu accent.

あるコンピューターを使ってもらいました

I gave them a computer

このコンピューターには

with a speech-to-text interface,

ウィンドウズに添付されているような

which you now get free with Windows,

音声テキスト化機能が付いていますので

and asked them to speak into it.

話し声を入力してもらいました

So when they spoke into it,

ただ 話し声を入力しても

the computer typed out gibberish,

無意味な文字列が表示されるので

so they said, "Well, it doesn't understand anything of what we are saying."

「何言っても認識しない」と言うのですが

So I said, "Yeah, I'll leave it here for two months.

私は「２カ月置いておくから

Make yourself understood

君たちの話をコンピューターに

to the computer."

理解させてね」とお願いしました

So the children said, "How do we do that."

「どうやるの？」と子どもたちが聞くので

And I said,

こう返しました

"I don't know, actually."

「分からないよ」

(Laughter)

And I left.

そのまま立ち去りました

(Laughter)

（笑）

Two months later --

２カ月後の結果は

and this is now documented

「情報技術と国際開発」という

in the Information Technology

学術誌にすでに

for International Development journal --

掲載されているのですが

that accents had changed

なまりに変化がありました

and were remarkably close to the neutral British accent

音声テキスト化ソフトの設定に使った

in which I had trained the speech-to-text synthesizer.

くせのないイギリス式の発音にすごく近かったのです

In other words, they were all speaking like James Tooley.

皆が教育学者ジェイムス トゥーリーみたいに話すのです

(Laughter)

So they could do that on their own.

それを自分たちの力でやったのです

After that, I started to experiment

このあと

with various other things

子どもたちが自分で学習できそうなことを

that they might learn to do on their own.

他にも色々と試し始めました

I got an interesting phone call once from Columbo,

コロンビアから電話を受けて驚いたことがありました

from the late Arthur C. Clarke,

亡きアーサー C クラーク氏からでした

who said, "I want to see what's going on."

「何をやっているのか見たい」

And he couldn't travel, so I went over there.

と言うのです 彼は遠出できないので 私が行きました

He said two interesting things,

二つおもしろいことを言っていました

"A teacher that can be replaced by a machine should be."

「機械で替えがきく教師は 替えるべきだ」

(Laughter)

The second thing he said was that,

"If children have interest,

「子どもたちが興味を抱いたとき

then education happens."

そこに教育が生まれる」

And I was doing that in the field,

現場でそれを目にするたびに

so every time I would watch it and think of him.

the web and find things which interest them.

And when you've got interest, then you have education.

This is a 15 year-old boy.

こちらは15歳の少年です

like animals,

and I listen to music.

あと 音楽を聴いたりするよ」

SM: And I asked him, "Do you send emails?"

「メールは送った？」と聞いたら

And he said, "Yes, and they hop across the ocean."

「うん 海の向こうまで届いたよ」と言ってました

This is in Cambodia,

こちらはカンボジアの様子です

rural Cambodia --

カンボジアでも田舎の方です

a fairly silly arithmetic game,

はっきり言って つまらない算数ゲームをやっています

which no child would play inside the classroom or at home.

教室や家ならやろうとしないでしょうし

They would, you know, throw it back at you.

「つまらないよ」と

They'd say, "This is very boring."

投げ返してくるはずです

If you leave it on the pavement

でも 道端に設置して

and if all the adults go away,

大人がどこかに行ってしまえば

then they will show off with each other

子どもたちはお互いに

about what they can do.

できることを自慢するのです

This is what these children are doing.

こちらは子どもたちが操作しているところです

They are trying to multiply, I think.

おそらく掛け算をやろうとしているのでしょう

And all over India,

インドの全域で

at the end of about two years,

２年ほど試すと その終盤には

children were beginning to Google their homework.

子どもたちが宿題でグーグル検索を使い出したので

As a result, the teachers reported

教師がこう言っていました

tremendous improvements in their English --

「英語力が飛躍的に伸びた」

(Laughter)

rapid improvement and all sorts of things.

「なにもかも急速に伸びた」

They said, "They have become really deep thinkers and so on and so forth.

「何事も実に深く考察するようになった」

(Laughter)

（笑）

And indeed they had.

たしかに そうなのです

I mean, if there's stuff on Google,

グーグルを調べて分かるなら

why would you need to stuff it into your head?

知識を詰め込む必要はないのです

So at the end of the next four years,

次の４年間の終盤には

I decided that groups of children can navigate the internet

子どもたちはインターネットを使いこなして

to achieve educational objectives on their own.

自分で教材を見つけ出せることが分かりました

At that time, a large amount of money

そのころ 英国のニューカッスル大学では

had come into Newcastle University

インドの学校教育を改善するために

to improve schooling in India.

莫大な資金が集まりました

So Newcastle gave me a call. I said, "I'll do it from Delhi."

大学からの電話に「デリーでやるよ」と答えたら

They said, "There's no way you're going to handle

「デリーにいながら

a million pounds-worth of University money

100万ポンドもの大学の資金を運用するなんて

sitting in Delhi."

無理だよ」と言われました

So in 2006,

ですから 2006年には

I bought myself a heavy overcoat

厚手のコートを自分で買って

and moved to Newcastle.

ニューカッスルに移りました

I wanted to test the limits

of the system.

The first experiment I did out of Newcastle

was actually done in India.

And I set myself and impossible target:

can Tamil speaking

12-year-old children

in a South Indian village

teach themselves biotechnology

in English on their own?

英語で自習できるだろうか？」

And I thought, I'll test them, they'll get a zero --

こう予測していました「テストは０点

I'll give the materials, I'll come back and test them --

コンピューターを渡して また戻ってきてテスト

they get another zero,

また０点

I'll go back and say, "Yes, we need teachers for certain things."

"ある学習には教師が必要だ"と報告だな」

I called in 26 children.

26人の子どもたちを集めました

They all came in there, and I told them

そこでこう話したのです

that there's some really difficult stuff on this computer.

「とても難しい内容だよ

I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't understand anything.

誰も理解できなくても驚かないよ すべて英語だし」

It's all in English, and I'm going.

そう言って立ち去りました

(Laughter)

（笑）

So I left them with it.

コンピューターを子どもたちに残して

I came back after two months,

２カ月後に戻ってみると

and the 26 children marched in looking very, very quiet.

26人の子どもがとても静かに集まってきて

I said, "Well, did you look at any of the stuff?"

「何か見てみた？」と聞いたら

They said, "Yes, we did."

「見たよ」と答えたので

"Did you understand anything?" "No, nothing."

「何か分かった？」と聞いたら「なんにも」というのです

So I said,

そこで私が

"Well, how long did you practice on it

「何も分からないと判断するまでに

before you decided you understood nothing?"

どれくらいの期間やったの？」と聞いたら

They said, "We look at it every day."

「毎日見てたよ」と答えます

So I said, "For two months, you were looking at stuff you didn't understand?"

「２カ月見て何も？」と聞いたら

So a 12 year-old girl raises her hand and says,

12歳の少女が手を挙げて

literally,

実際にこう言いました

"Apart from the fact that improper replication of the DNA molecule

「DNA分子の不適切な複製で遺伝子疾患が起きる

causes genetic disease,

ということ以外は

we've understood nothing else."

何も分からないの」

(Laughter)

It took me three years to publish that.

これを発表するまで３年かかりました

It's just been published in the British Journal of Educational Technology.

ちょうど学会誌に掲載されたところです

One of the referees who refereed the paper said,

論文を査読した人は

"It's too good to be true,"

「本当にしてはできすぎだ」なんて言っていました

which was not very nice.

残念な発言です

Well, one of the girls had taught herself

自分で勉強した一人の女の子が

to become the teacher.

先生の役をしていました

And then that's her over there.

ここにいるのがその子です

Remember, they don't study English.

確認しますが 英語学習ではありません

I edited out the last bit when I asked, "Where is the neuron?"

編集で切ったのですが「ニューロンはどこ？」と聞いたら

and she says, "The neuron? The neuron,"

この子は「ニューロン？ニューロン？」

and then she looked and did this.

と言って目を動かして頭を指しました

Whatever the expression, it was not very nice.

あまり品のいい仕草ではありません

So their scores had gone up from zero to 30 percent,

子どもたちのテスト結果は０%から30%へと良くなりました

which is an educational impossibility under the circumstances.

このような地域ではありえない教育結果です

But 30 percent is not a pass.

でも30%で合格ではありません

So I found that they had a friend,

子どもたちが一緒にサッカーをする

a local accountant, a young girl,

地元の若い女性会計士がいることを知って

and they played football with her.

その女性にこんなお願いをしてみました

I asked that girl, "Would you teach them

「合格点を出せるぐらいまでこの子たちに

enough biotechnology to pass?"

バイオテクノロジーを教えてくれませんか？」と

And she said, "How would I do that? I don't know the subject."

「どうするの？何も分からないのに」と聞くので

I said, "No, use the method of the grandmother."

「お婆ちゃんになって」と言いました

She said, "What's that?"

「どういうこと？」と彼女が尋ねるので

I said, "Well, what you've got to do

こう教えてあげました

is stand behind them

「子どもたちの後ろに立って

and admire them all the time.

子どもたちを励まし続けるんだ

Just say to them, 'That's cool. That's fantastic.

"いいね" "すごいね" とか言ったり

What is that? Can you do that again? Can you show me some more?'"

"それ何？" "もう一度" "もっと見せて" とか言うんだよ」

She did that for two months.

その女性が２カ月間続けると

The scores went up to 50,

テスト結果は50%まで良くなりました

which is what the posh schools of New Delhi,

バイオテクノロジーに詳しい教師がいる

with a trained biotechnology teacher were getting.

ニューデリーの上流階級の学校の生徒が取る点数です

So I came back to Newcastle

この結果をたずさえて

with these results

ニューカッスルに戻りまして

and decided

この地でも

that there was something happening here

間違いなく真剣に取り組むべきことが

that definitely was getting very serious.

起きていると考えました

So, having experimented in all sorts of remote places,

遠く離れたいろいろな地域を経験してきましたが

I came to the most remote place that I could think of.

私には一番遠く感じる地域にやってきました

(Laughter)

Approximately 5,000 miles from Delhi

デリーから約8000キロ離れた

is the little town of Gateshead.

ゲーツヘッドという英国の小さな町です

In Gateshead, I took 32 children

ゲーツヘッドでは 32人の子どもたちを集めて

and I started to fine-tune the method.

これまでの手法に手直しを加えました

I made them into groups of four.

子どもたちを四つのグループに分けて説明しました

I said, "You make your own groups of four.

「どのグループに入るか自分で決めよう

Each group of four can use one computer and not four computers."

グループごとに1台のPCを使ってね 4台じゃないよ

Remember, from the Hole in the Wall.

後ろで監視しているから ズルしちゃ駄目だ

"You can exchange groups.

グループを替わるのもよし

You can walk across to another group,

グループに合わないとか思ったら

if you don't like your group, etc.

グループを渡り歩いてもいいよ

You can go to another group, peer over their shoulders, see what they're doing,

他のグループの作業を肩越しにのぞいて

come back to you own group and claim it as your own work."

自分のグループに戻って自分の手柄にしてもよし」

And I explained to them

さらにこう付け加えました

that, you know, a lot of scientific research is done using that method.

「科学技術の研究ではそうすることが多いんだよ」

(Laughter)

The children enthusiastically got after me and said,

子どもたちは熱心に聞いてきます

"Now, what do you want us to do?"

「なにをしたらいいの？」と

I gave them six GCSE questions.

そこで中等教育卒業資格試験から６問を出題しました

The first group -- the best one --

一つ目のグループは一番優秀で

solved everything in 20 minutes.

20分で全部解きました

The worst, in 45.

最下位のグループは45分かかりました

They used everything that they knew --

子どもたちは ニュースグループや

news groups, Google, Wikipedia,

グーグル、ウィキペデア、Ask Jeevesなど

Ask Jeeves, etc.

知る限りの手段を使いました

The teachers said, "Is this deep learning?"

「これが知識を深める学習？」と教師が尋ねるのですが

I said, "Well, let's try it.

私が言ったのは「試してみてください

I'll come back after two months.

２カ月後に戻ってきて

We'll give them a paper test --

ペーパーテストを受けさせます

no computers, no talking to each other, etc."

コンピューターの使用や相談などは無しです」

The average score when I'd done it with the computers and the groups

コンピューターを使ってグループで解くと

was 76 percent.

平均76%の正答率でした

When I did the experiment, when I did the test,

２カ月たって

after two months, the score

テストを実施してみると

was 76 percent.

76%という結果ができました

There was photographic recall

子どもたちが頭の中で

inside the children,

鮮明に思い出したのではないでしょうか

I suspect because they're discussing with each other.

お互いに議論した結果だと思います

A single child in front of a single computer

1台のコンピュータを一人で使う子には

will not do that.

そんなことはできません

I have further results,

さらには

which are almost unbelievable,

まったく信じがたいことに

of scores which go up with time.

時間とともに点数が良くなりました

Because their teachers say

教師の話では

that after the session is over,

子どもたちが放課後も

the children continue to Google further.

グーグル検索を続けていたおかげのようです

Here in Britain, I put out a call

実験後に

for British grandmothers,

ここイギリスでも

after my Kuppam experiment.

お婆ちゃん役を募集しました

Well, you know,

そうしたら

they're very vigorous people, British grandmothers.

イギリスのお婆ちゃんはとても精力的で

200 of them volunteered immediately.

200人のボランティアがすぐに集まりました

(Laughter)

The deal was that they would give me

one hour of broadband time,

sitting in their homes,

one day in a week.

So they did that,

and over the last two years,

over 600 hours of instruction

has happened over Skype,

using what my students call the granny cloud.

I can beam them to whichever school I want to.

SM: Back at Gateshead,

a 10-year-old girl gets into the heart of Hinduism

10歳の女の子が15分で

in 15 minutes.

ヒンドゥー教を深くまで調べました

You know, stuff which I don't know anything about.

私が全く知らない知識です

Two children watch a TEDTalk.

TEDトークを見ている子が二人いました

They wanted to be footballers before.

サッカー選手になりたがっていたのに

After watching eight TEDTalks,

TEDトークを８本見たあとでは

he wants to become Leonardo da Vinci.

レオナルド ダ ビンチになりたいと言っていました

It's pretty simple stuff.

とても分かりやすい例です

This is what I'm building now --

今このようなものをつくっています

they're called SOLEs: Self Organized Learning Environments.

自己学習環境 SOLEといいます

The furniture is designed

ここの設備を使えば

so that children can sit in front of big, powerful screens,

子どもたちが大きな画面の前に座って

big broadband connections, but in groups.

高速でネットを利用でき もちろんグループで利用します

If they want, they can call the granny cloud.

必要なときにお婆ちゃんネットを利用できます

This is a SOLE in Newcastle.

こちらはニューカッスルにあるSOLEです

The mediator is from Pune, India.

インドのある人が協力してくれました

So how far can we go? One last little bit and I'll stop.

最後に１つだけ少しお話しして終わりにしましょう

I went to Turin in May.

５月にイタリアのトリノを訪れたとき

I sent all the teachers away from my group of 10 year-old students.

10歳の児童のグループから教師を引き離ました

I speak only English, they speak only Italian,

私は英語だけ 子どもはイタリア語だけを話しますから

so we had no way to communicate.

会話するすべがありませんでした

I started writing English questions on the blackboard.

黒板に英語で質問を書き始めると それを見て

The children looked at it and said, "What?"

「何それ？」と子どもたちが聞くので

I said, "Well, do it."

「とりあえずやってみよう」と言いました

They typed it into Google, translated it into Italian,

子どもたちはグーグルに入力してイタリア語に翻訳し

went back into Italian Google.

イタリア語のグーグルに戻って

Fifteen minutes later --

15分たつと ...

next question: where is Calcutta?

次の質問は「カルカッタはどこにある？」

This one, they took only 10 minutes.

これには10分しかかかりませんでした

I tried a really hard one then.

そこでかなり難しい質問を出しました

Who was Pythagoras, and what did he do?

「Pythagorasは誰？ 何をした人？」

There was silence for a while,

しばらく静かになったあとで

then they said, "You've spelled it wrong.

「先生 スペルが違うよ

It's Pitagora."

Petagorasだよ」と子供たちが言いました

And then,

それから20分がたって

in 20 minutes,

直角三角形が画面に

the right-angled triangles began to appear on the screens.

表示されるようになりました

This sent shivers up my spine.

それを見て背筋がゾクゾクしました

These are 10 year-olds.

10歳の子どもですよ

Text: In another 30 minutes they would reach the Theory of Relativity. And then?

「あと30分で相対性理論を知ったかも さらに ...」

SM: So you know what's happened?

なにが起きたのでしょう？

I think we've just stumbled across

自己学習システムを

a self-organizing system.

まさに手にしたところなのです

A self-organizing system is one

自己学習システムは

where a structure appears

外部から明確な介入を受けずに

without explicit intervention from the outside.

その仕組みを構築するものです

Self-organizing systems also always show emergence,

さらに自己学習システムでは常に創発がみられます

which is that the system starts to do things,

つまり予期していないことを

which it was never designed for.

このシステムが実行し始めるのです

Which is why you react the way you do,

一見不可能に見えるから

because it looks impossible.

皆さんはそんな反応をされるのでしょうが

I think I can make a guess now --

現段階で私のように推測することは可能だと思います

education is self-organizing system,

教育は自己学習システムです

where learning is an emergent phenomenon.

そこでは学習が創発的現象なのです

It'll take a few years to prove it, experimentally,

実験的に証明するには数年かかるでしょうが

but I'm going to try.

やってみるつもりです

But in the meanwhile, there is a method available.

今の所 こう考えています

One billion children, we need 100 million mediators --

子ども10億人に対して関係者１億人が必要です

there are many more than that on the planet --

地球上にはもっとたくさんいるでしょう

10 million SOLEs,

SOLEは1000万台必要です

180 billion dollars and 10 years.

1800億ドルと10年の期間が必要です

We could change everything.

きっとすべてを変えられることでしょう
