Two years ago, I stood on the TED stage in Arusha, Tanzania.

I spoke very briefly about one of my proudest creations.

It was a simple machine that changed my life.

Before that time,

I had never been away from my home

I had never used a computer.

컴퓨터를 사용해 본 적도,

I had never seen an Internet.

인터넷이란 걸 본 적도 없었습니다.

On the stage that day, I was so nervous.

무대에선 그 날, 전 굉장히 떨렸습니다.

My English lost,

형편없는 영어를 하고,

I wanted to vomit.

마치 토할 꺼 같았어요.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I had never been surrounded by so many azungu,

그렇게 많은 '아중구'들 사이에 있어본 적도 없었어요.

white people.

백인들 말이죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

There was a story I wouldn't tell you then.

그 땐 너무 떨려 말하지 못한 얘기가 있었습니다.

But well, I'm feeling good right now.

하지만 지금은 괜찮아요.

I would like to share that story today.

그래서 오늘은 그 이야기를 나눠보려 합니다.

We have seven children in my family.

우리 집엔 7명의 아이들이 있습니다.

All sisters, excepting me.

저를 빼곤 모두 누이죠.

This is me with my dad when I was a little boy.

이건 제가 어렸을 때 저와 제 아버지입니다.

Before I discovered the wonders of science,

제가 과학에 눈을 뜨기 전,

I was just a simple farmer

저는 다른 농부들처럼

in a country of poor farmers.

옥수수를 키우는

Like everyone else, we grew maize.

가난한 나라의 그저 평범한 농부였습니다.

One year our fortune turned very bad.

어느 핸가 작황이 굉장히 안 좋았습니다.

In 2001 we experienced an awful famine.

2001년인데요. 그때 우리는 끔찍한 기근을 겪었습니다.

Within five months all Malawians began to starve to death.

5개월이 못 되어, 많은 말라위 사람들이 굶어죽기 시작했습니다.

My family ate one meal per day, at night.

우리 가족은 하루에 저녁 한 끼만 먹었습니다.

Only three swallows of nsima for each one of us.

그저 한 사람당 씨마(옥수수로 만든 음식) 세 입이 전부였습니다.

The food passes through our bodies.

음식물이 몸에 들어왔으나

We drop down to nothing.

몸에선 아무 것도 나오질 않았어요.

In Malawi, the secondary school,

말라위에선 중학교를 다니려면

you have to pay school fees.

학비를 내야 합니다.

Because of the hunger, I was forced to drop out of school.

굶주림은 제가 학교를 계속 다닐 수 없게 했습니다.

I looked at my father

저는 아버지를 바라보고

and looked at those dry fields.

메마른 땅을 바라보곤 했습니다.

It was the future I couldn't accept.

그것은 제가 받아들일 수 없는 미래였습니다.

I felt very happy to be at the secondary school,

중학교에서 공부하며 매우 행복했던 저를 생각하며

so I was determined to do anything possible

공부만 할 수만 있다면 무엇이든 하겠다고

to receive education.

결정했습니다.

So I went to a library.

그래서 도서관에 가서

I read books, science books, especially physics.

책을 읽었습니다. 과학책, 특히 물리책을 읽었습니다.

I couldn't read English that well.

영어를 잘 읽지 못해

I used diagrams and pictures

도표와 그림을 보며

to learn the words around them.

단어를 배우고 익혔습니다.

Another book put that knowledge in my hands.

어떤 책엔 제가 활용할 수 있는 지식이 담겨 있었습니다.

It said a windmill could pump water and generate electricity.

그 책엔 풍차가 물을 퍼올리고 전기를 만들어 준다고 적혀 있었습니다.

Pump water meant irrigation,

물을 퍼올린다는 건 관개를 뜻합니다.

a defense against hunger,

그리고 그건 우리를 굶주림에서

which we were experiencing by that time.

벗어나게 해 줄 훌륭한 해결책임을 뜻하지요.

So I decided I would build one windmill for myself.

그래서 혼자 풍차를 만들어 보자고 결정했습니다.

But I didn't have materials to use,

하지만 만들 재료가 없었어요.

so I went to a scrap yard

그래서 필요한 재료를 구하러

where I found my materials.

폐기물 하치장에 가곤 했습니다.

Many people, including my mother,

어머니를 비롯한 많은 사람들이

said I was crazy.

미쳤다고 말했죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

I found a tractor fan,

트랙터의 팬과

shock absorber, PVC pipes.

충격 흡수장치, PVC 파이프를 구하고,

Using a bicycle frame

자전거의 프레임과

and an old bicycle dynamo,

오래된 자전거 발전기를 사용하여

I built my machine.

풍차를 만들었습니다.

It was one light at first.

처음엔 전등 하나뿐이었지만,

And then four lights,

나중엔 스위치가 달린

with switches, and even a circuit breaker,

전구 4개와 두꺼비집도 달고

modeled after an electric bell.

전기고지서도 따라 만들어 봤습니다.

Another machine pumps water

다른 풍차도 만들어 관개시설로

for irrigation.

물을 퍼올렸습니다.

Queues of people start lining up at my house

사람들이 우리 집 앞에 줄을 서기 시작했습니다.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

to charge their mobile phone.

핸드폰 충전을 위해서요.

(Applause)

I could not get rid of them.

그들을 막을 순 없었죠.

(Laughter)

(웃음)

And the reporters came too,

어느 샌가 기자들이 찾아와서

which lead to bloggers

이를 블로거들에게 전하고

and which lead to a call from something called TED.

결국엔 TED라고 하는 곳에서 연락이 왔습니다.

I had never seen an airplane before.

비행기라는 걸 본 적도 없고

I had never slept in a hotel.

호텔이란 곳에서 자 본 적도 없던

So, on stage that day in Arusha,

저는 그 날 아루샤의 무대에서

my English lost,

형편없는 영어로

I said something like,

그저 이렇게 말했습니다.

"I tried. And I made it."

"노력해서..풍차를 만들었어요."

So I would like to say something

전 그래서 저와 같은 처지의

to all the people out there like me

모든 사람들에게,

to the Africans, and the poor

아프리카인들에게,

who are struggling with your dreams.

가난하지만 꿈을 위해 분투하는 여러분 모두에게,

God bless.

신의 은총이 있기 바랍니다.
