My travels to Afghanistan

अफगानिस्तान के लिए मेरी यात्रा

began many, many years ago

बहुत वर्षों पहले,

on the eastern border of my country,

मेरे देश की पूर्वी सीमा पर शुरू हुई,

my homeland, Poland.

मेरी मातृभूमि, पोलैंड की ।

I was walking through the forests

मैं मेरी दादी माँ की कहानियों के

of my grandmother's tales.

जंगल में चल रही थी ।

A land where every field hides a grave,

एक देश जहाँ हर जगह एक कब्र छुपी है,

where millions of people

जहां लाखों लोग

have been deported or killed

मारे या निर्वासित कर दिये गये थे

in the 20th century.

२० वीं सदी में ।

Behind the destruction,

विनाश के पीछे,

I found a soul of places.

मैं ने स्थान की आत्मा को पाया ।

I met humble people.

मैं विनम्र लोगों से मिली ।

I heard their prayer

उनकी प्रार्थनाएँ सुनी

and ate their bread.

और उनकी रोटी खाई ।

Then I have been walking East for 20 years --

फिर २० सालों से मैं पूर्व की ओर जा रही हुँ --

from Eastern Europe to Central Asia --

पूर्वी यूरोप से मध्य एशिया --

through the Caucasus Mountains,

काकेशस पहाड़ों के रास्ते,

Middle East,

मध्य पूर्व अरब

North Africa,

उत्तरी अफ्रीका

Russia.

रुस ।

And I ever met more humble people.

मैं और विनम्र लोगों से मिली ।

And I shared their bread and their prayer.

उनकी संग भी भोजन और प्रार्थना करी और

This is why I went to Afghanistan.

इसलिए मैं अफगानिस्तान गयी ।

One day, I crossed the bridge

एक दिन मैंने ओक्सस नदी

over the Oxus River.

I was alone on foot.

मैं अकेली पैदल थी और

And the Afghan soldier was so surprised to see me

अफ़ग़ान सैनिक तो मुझे देख कर इतने हैरान थे

that he forgot to stamp my passport.

कि वह मेरे पासपोर्ट पर मुहर लगाना ही भूल गया

But he gave me a cup of tea.

परंतु उसने मुझे एक कप चाय दी

And I understood

और मैं समझ गयी कि

that his surprise was my protection.

उसकी हैरानी ही मेरी सुरक्षा है ।

So I have been walking and traveling,

तो मैं यात्रा करती जा रही हुँ

by horses, by yak, by truck, by hitchhiking,

घोड़ों पर, याक पर, ट्रक में, लिफ्ट ले,

from Iran's border

ईरान की सीमा से

to the bottom, to the edge of the Wakhan Corridor.

नीचे तक, वखन के गलियारे के किनारे तक ।

And in this way

और इस तरह

I could find noor, the hidden light of Afghanistan.

मैंने एक नूर पाया, अफगानिस्तान कि वो छुपी किरण ।

My only weapon

मेरा एकमात्र शस्त्र थे

was my notebook and my Leica.

मेरी पुस्तक और मेरा कैमरा ।

I heard prayers of the Sufi --

मैंने सूफी विनम्र मुसलमानों की

humble Muslims,

प्रार्थनाएँ सुनी, जो

hated by the Taliban.

तालिबान को पसंद न थी ।

Hidden river,

छुपी हुई,

interconnected with the mysticism

रहस्यवादी नदी

from Gibraltar to India.

जिब्राल्टर से भारत तक ।

The mosque where the respectful foreigner

मस्जिद जहां श्रद्धालु विदेशी पर

is showered with blessings

दुआओं और खुशी के

and with tears,

आंसुओं से ,उपहार

and welcomed as a gift.

की तरह स्वागत किया जाता हैं ।

What do we know

हम क्या जानते हैं इस

about the country and the people

देश और लोगों के बारे में

that we pretend to protect,

जिसकी सुरक्षा का हम नाटक करते हैं,

about the villages

उन गाँवों के बारे मे

where the only one medicine

जहाँ सिर्फ़ अफीम ही

to kill the pain and to stop the hunger

भूख और दर्द को मारने

is opium?

की दवा है ।

These are opium-addicted people

ये अफीम अादी लोग है

on the roofs of Kabul

काबुल की छतों पर,

10 years after the beginning of our war.

हमारे युद्ध के १० वर्ष बाद ।

These are the nomad girls

ये घुमक्कड़ लड़कियां हैं

who became prostitutes for Afghan businessmen.

जो अफ़घानि व्यापारियों के लिये वेश्या बन गयीं ।

What do we know about the women

हम उन महिलाओं के बारे में क्या जानते है

10 years after the war?

१० साल के युद्ध के बाद ?

Clothed in this nylon bag,

नायलॉन बैग पहने,

made in China,

चीन में बनाया गया,

with the name of burqa.

बुर्के के नाम से ।

I saw one day,

मैंने एक दिन देखा,

the largest school in Afghanistan,

अफगानिस्तान में सबसे बड़ा स्कूल,

a girls' school.

एक लड़कियों का स्कूल ।

13,000 girls

१३,००० लड़कियाँ

studying here

पढ़ती हुईं

in the rooms underground,

भूमिगत कमरों में

full of scorpions.

बिच्छूओ के बीच ।

And their love [for studying]

और पढ़ाई के लिए उनका प्यार

was so big that I cried.

इतना था कि मैं रो पड़ी ।

What do we know

क्या हमें तालिबान द्वारा

about the death threats by the Taliban

मौत की धमकियों के बारे पता है जो

nailed on the doors

लोगों के दरवाज़ों पर आती है

of the people who dare to send their daughters to school as in Balkh?

जो अपनी बेटियों को स्कूल भेजते है जैसे कि बल्ख में ?

The region is not secure, but full of the Taliban,

वह क्षेत्र सुरक्षित नहीं है बल्कि तालिबानियों से भरा है,

and they did it.

और उन्होने किया है ।

My aim is to give a voice

मेरा उद्देश्य आवज़ देना है,

to the silent people,

to show the hidden lights

behind the curtain of the great game,

the small worlds ignored by the media

and the prophets of a global conflict.

द्वारा नजरअंदाज करी गयी दुनिया ।
