My travels to Afghanistan

아프가니스탄으로 가는 저의

began many, many years ago

여행은 오래 오래전에

on the eastern border of my country,

저의 조국인 폴란드의 동쪽 국경에서

my homeland, Poland.

부터 시작했지요.

I was walking through the forests

저는 제 할머니가 저한테 들려주시던

of my grandmother's tales.

여러 이야기에 나오는 숲속을 걸으며 많은 시간을 보냈지요.

A land where every field hides a grave,

그곳에 있는 들판에는 20세기 중에

where millions of people

추방을 당했거나 또는 살해당한

have been deported or killed

수백만명의 사람들이 묻힌

in the 20th century.

묘지들이 가는 곳마다 있지요.

Behind the destruction,

이러한 비참한 역사를 통해

I found a soul of places.

저는 그 지역의 혼을 찾았지요.

I met humble people.

저는 그곳에서 가난하고 겸허한

I heard their prayer

사람들을 만났고, 그들의 기도를 듣고

and ate their bread.

그들의 빵을 먹었지요.

Then I have been walking East for 20 years --

그 후 저는 20년에 걸쳐 동유럽에서 부터

from Eastern Europe to Central Asia --

중앙아시아까지 걸어서 여행을 했습니다

through the Caucasus Mountains,

코카서스 산맥을 거쳐,

Middle East,

중동, 북아프리카,

North Africa,

그리고 러시아를

Russia.

걸으며 사진을 찍었습니다.

And I ever met more humble people.

이 여정을 통해 저는 더 많은 겸허한 사람들을 만났고,

And I shared their bread and their prayer.

그들의 빵을 나누어 먹었으며 그들과 함께 기도를 했지요.

This is why I went to Afghanistan.

저는 그래서 아프가니스탄에 갔습니다.

One day, I crossed the bridge

어느날 저는 혼자 걸어서

over the Oxus River.

옥서스강의 다리를

I was alone on foot.

건너갔지요.

And the Afghan soldier was so surprised to see me

국경에서 여권을 검사하는 아프가니스탄 군인은

that he forgot to stamp my passport.

저를 보고 너무 놀라서 제 여권에 도장도 찍지 않았어요.

But he gave me a cup of tea.

그래도 그 군인은 저한테 차를 한잔 줬지요.

And I understood

저는 그때 간단한 몸차림으로 여행하는것이

that his surprise was my protection.

더 안전하다는 것을 깨달았어요.

So I have been walking and traveling,

그래서 저는 그런식으로 걷기도 하고, 말도 타고

by horses, by yak, by truck, by hitchhiking,

야크도 타고, 트럭도 타고 히치하이크도 하며

from Iran's border

이란의 국경에서 부터 이란의 제일 남쪽,

to the bottom, to the edge of the Wakhan Corridor.

그리고 와칸 회랑의 끝까지 여행을 했지요.

And in this way

저는 이렇게 여행을 하며

I could find noor, the hidden light of Afghanistan.

NOOR라는 아프가니스탄의 재활단체에 대해 알 수 있었죠.

My only weapon

제가 가진 무기라고는

was my notebook and my Leica.

공책과 라이카 카메라밖에 없었습니다.

I heard prayers of the Sufi --

저는 탈리반들이 싫어하는

humble Muslims,

겸허한 이슬람 수피족의

hated by the Taliban.

기도를 들었지요.

Hidden river,

지브랄타와 인도 사이의

interconnected with the mysticism

숨어 있는 강들은

from Gibraltar to India.

신비주의로 연결되어 있습니다.

The mosque where the respectful foreigner

모스크는 그들을 찾아오는 예의바른 이방인들에게

is showered with blessings

축복을 내려주고 그들이

and with tears,

마치 하늘이 내려준 선물인냥

and welcomed as a gift.

눈물을 흘리며 환영하지요.

What do we know

우리는 우리가 보호한다고 말하는

about the country and the people

이 나라나 이 나라의 국민들에 대해

that we pretend to protect,

무엇을 알고 있나요?

about the villages

우리는 이 나라 사람들의

where the only one medicine

질병과 기아의 고통을 덜어줄 수 있는

to kill the pain and to stop the hunger

유일한 약이라고는 아편밖에 없다는

is opium?

사실을 알고 있나요?

These are opium-addicted people

우리가 아프가니스탄에서 전쟁을

on the roofs of Kabul

시작한지 10년이 지난 오늘날 카불의

10 years after the beginning of our war.

지붕에는 아편 중독자들이 이렇게 누워서 자고 있습니다.

These are the nomad girls

이들은 아프가니스탄 비지니스맨들에게

who became prostitutes for Afghan businessmen.

몸을 팔아서 살아가는 유목민 소녀들입니다.

What do we know about the women

이곳에서 전쟁을 시작한지 10년이 지났는데

10 years after the war?

우리는 이들에 대해 무엇을 알고 있나요?

Clothed in this nylon bag,

이 여자는 중국제

made in China,

나일롱 백으로 만든

with the name of burqa.

부르카를 입고 있습니다.

I saw one day,

어느날 저는,

the largest school in Afghanistan,

아프가니스탄에 있는

a girls' school.

가장 큰 여학교에서,

13,000 girls

13,000 명의 학생들이

studying here

전갈들이 들끓는

in the rooms underground,

이 지하 교실에서

full of scorpions.

공부하고 있는 모습을 보았고,

And their love [for studying]

그 학교 여학생들의

was so big that I cried.

학구열에 감탄해 울었지요.

What do we know

발흐같은 도시에서는

about the death threats by the Taliban

탈레반이 딸을 학교로 보내는 사람들의 집문에

nailed on the doors

살인협박장을 붙인다는

of the people who dare to send their daughters to school as in Balkh?

사실을 우리는 알고 있나요?

The region is not secure, but full of the Taliban,

탈레반들이 많은 안전하지 않은 지역에서는

and they did it.

그런 일들이 빈번하게 발생합니다.

My aim is to give a voice

제가 원하는 것은 목소리 없는

to the silent people,

이들이 발언권을 가지게 되고,

to show the hidden lights

세계의 미디어와 정치가들로 부터

behind the curtain of the great game,

등한시 받으면서도 국내의 편견과 무지에 대항해서

the small worlds ignored by the media

싸우고 있는 아프가니스탄 국민들의

and the prophets of a global conflict.

숨은 희망의 불꽃을 전세계에 알려주는 것입니다.
