So I thought, "I will talk about death."

ངས་འཆི་བའི་སྐོར་བཤད་དགོས་བསམས་བྱུང་།

Seemed to be the passion today.

དེ་ནི་དེང་གི་དབྱིངས་ཡིན་པ་ལྟ་བུ་འདུག

Actually, it's not about death.

དངོས་ཡོད་ཐོག་འདི་ནི་འཆི་བའི་སྐོར་མ་རེད།

It's inevitable, terrible, but really what I want to talk about is,

འཆི་བ་ནི་འགོག་ཐབས་མེད་པའི་ཞེད་སྣང་ཆེན་པོ་ཞིག་ཡིན་ཀྱང་། ངས་དངོས་ཡོད་ཐོག་བཤད་འདོད་པ་ནི།

I'm just fascinated by the legacy people leave when they die.

མི་ཞིག་འཇིག་རྟེན་དང་བྲལ་རྗེས་སུ་ཤུལ་དུ་བཞག་པའི་ཤུལ་རྗས་ཀྱི་ང་རང་ཧང་སངས་བཅུག་སོང་བས།

That's what I want to talk about.

ངས་བཤད་འདོད་པའང་དེའི་སྐོར་ཡིན།

So Art Buchwald left his legacy of humor with a video

དེར་བརྟེན(Art Buchwald)་ཡིས་ཤུལ་དུ་རང་གི་དགོད་བྲོ་བའི་བརྙན་ཐུང་ཞིག་བཞག་པ་རེད།

that appeared soon after he died, saying,

དེ་ནི་ཁོང་འཇིག་རྟེན་དང་ཁ་བྲལ་བའི་རྗེས་སུ་ཐོན་པ་རེད།

"Hi! I'm Art Buchwald, and I just died."

"ཧཡེ་ ང་ནི་Art Buchwaldཡིན།ང་ད་ལྟ་རང་ཤི་སོང་།"

And Mike, who I met at Galapagos, a trip which I won at TED,

TEDཡིས་གོ་སྐབས་བསྐྲུན་པའི་འགྲུལ་ཐུང་ཞིག་གི་ནང་དུ་ང་ (Mike) ལ་(Galapagos) རུ་ཐུག་བྱུང་།

is leaving notes on cyberspace where he is chronicling

ཁོང་གིས་དྲ་རྒྱའི་ཀློང་ཡངས་སུ་

his journey through cancer.

རང་ཉིད་སྐྲན་ནད་ཀྱིས་མནར་བར་གདོང་ལེན་གང་འདྲ་བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཡོད་མེད་བྲིས་བཞག་གི་འདུག།

And my father left me a legacy of his handwriting

ངའི་ཕ་དམ་པས་ང་ལ་བཞག་པའི་ཤུལ་རྫས་ནི་

through letters and a notebook.

འཕྲིན་ཡིག་དང་ཟིན་བྲིས་དག་གི་ནང་དུ་ཡོད་པའི་ཁོང་གི་ཡིག་གཟུགས་རེད།

In the last two years of his life, when he was sick,

ཁོང་སྐུ་སྙུང་བའི་མི་ཚེའི་ཆེས་མཐའ་མཇུག་གི་ལོ་གཉིས་ཀྱི་རིང་

he filled a notebook with his thoughts about me.

ང་ལ་བཟུང་བའི་བསམ་ཚུལ་ཁག་འབྲི་དེབ་གང་བྲིས་འདུག།

He wrote about my strengths, weaknesses,

ཁོང་གིས་ངའི་ནུས་པ་དང་། ཞན་ཆ།

and gentle suggestions for improvement,

ཡར་རྒྱས་གཏོང་བའི་བསམ་ཚུལ།

quoting specific incidents, and held a mirror to my life.

ངའི་མི་ཚེ་གསལ་བའི་མེ་ལོང་ལྟ་བུའི་དོན་རྐྱེན་དམིགས་བསལ་བ་ཁག་ཅིག་ལུང་དྲངས་འདུག།

After he died, I realized that no one writes to me anymore.

ཁོང་གྲོངས་རྗེས་སུ། ངས་ད་ཆ་ང་ལ་མི་གཅིག་གིས་ཀྱང་འཕྲིན་ཡིག་གཏོང་གི་མིན་པ་དེ་རྟོགས་བྱུང་།

Handwriting is a disappearing art.

ལག་བྲིས་ཡིག་གཟུགས་ནི་ཡལ་བཞིན་པའི་སྒྱུ་རྩལ་ཞིག་རེད།

I'm all for email and thinking while typing,

ངས་གློག་འཕྲིན་དང་༼གློག་ཀླད་ཐོག་༽ཡི་གེ་འབྲི་སྐབས་བསམ་བློ་གཏོང་རྒྱུར་མོས་མཐུན་ཡོད།

but why give up old habits for new?

འོན་ཀྱང་། ཅིའི་ཕྱིར་གོམས་གཤིས་གསར་བ་ཞིག་གི་ཆེད་དུ་རྙིང་པ་དེ་དོར་དགོས་སམ།

Why can't we have letter writing and email exchange in our lives?

ང་ཚོའི་མི་ཚེའི་ནང་དུ་ཅིའི་་ཕྱིར་འཕྲིན་ཡིག་དང་གློག་འཕྲིན་༼གཉིས་ཀ་༽བྱེད་མ་ཐུབ་པ་ཡིན་ནམ།

There are times when I want to trade all those years

མཚམས་རེ་ངས་ལོ་ངོ་དུ་མའི་རིང་ལ།

that I was too busy to sit with my dad and chat with him,

བྲེལ་བའི་དབང་གིས་ཨ་ཕ་དང་མཉམ་དུ་བསྡད་ནས་ཁ་བརྡ་གློད་རྒྱུ་མ་བྱུང་བ་དེ་

and trade all those years for one hug.

དང་ལུས་ལ་ཐེངས་གཅིག་འཐམས་ཁོམ་བྱེད་རྒྱུ་གཉིས་བརྗེ་སྒྱུར་བྱེད་རྒྱུ་ཡོད་ན་བསམ།

But too late.

འོན་ཀྱང་། ད་འཕྱི་དྲགས་པ་རེད།

But that's when I take out his letters and I read them,

ཡིན་ཡང་། ངས་འཕྲིན་ཡིག་འདི་ཚོ་ཕྱི་ལ་བཏོན་ནས་ཀློག་སྐབས།

and the paper that touched his hand is in mine,

་ཁོང་གི་ལག་པར་ཐུག་པའི་ཤོག་བུ་འདི་ངའི་ཡིན་པ་ཚོར་དུས་

and I feel connected to him.

ང་ལ་ཁོང་དང་མཉམ་དུ་སྤྲེལ་བའི་ཚོར་བ་བསྐྱེད།

So maybe we all need to leave our children

ཕལ་ཆེར་ང་ཚོས་བུ་ཕྲུག་ཚོར་

with a value legacy, and not a financial one.

རིན་ཐང་གི་ཤུལ་རྫས་ཤིག་འཇོག་པ་ལས། རྒྱུ་ནོར་འཇོག་དགོས་རྒྱུ་མ་རེད།

A value for things with a personal touch --

མི་དང་མིར་སྦྲེལ་བའི་རིན་ཐང་སྟེ།

an autographed book, a soul-searching letter.

སུག་བྲིས་འབྲི་དེབ་ཅིག་དང་། རྣམ་ཤེས་འཚོལ་བའི་འཕྲིན་ཡིག་ཅིག།

If a fraction of this powerful TED audience

གལ་ཏེ་འདིར་འདུས་ཀྱི་འཇོན་ནུས་ལྡན་པའི་(TED)ཉན་མཁན་ཚོས་ཆ་ཤས་ཤིག་གིས་

could be inspired to buy a beautiful paper --

So what do I plan to leave for my son?

I collect autographed books, and those of you authors

ངས་འདིར་འདུས་ཀྱི་རྩོམ་པ་པོ་དག་གི་ལག་ནས་སུག་བྲིས་དཔེ་དེབ་མཁོ་སྒྲུབ་བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཡོད།

in the audience know I hound you for them --

ངས་ཁྱེད་ཚོས་རྗེས་འདེད་མང་པོ་བཏང་བ་འདིར་ཡོད་ཀྱི་རྩོམ་པ་པོ་ཚོས་ཤེས་ཀྱི་རེད།

and CDs too, Tracy.

I plan to publish my own notebook.

As I witnessed my father's body being swallowed by fire,

I sat by his funeral pyre and wrote.

I have no idea how I'm going to do it,

ངས་ཇི་ལྟར་བྱེད་མིན་ཤེས་ཀྱི་མིའདུག་ཀྱང་།

but I am committed to compiling his thoughts and mine

ཨ་ཕ་དང་རང་གི་བསམ་བློ་རྣམས་ཕྱོགས་སྒྲིག་ཀྱི་དེབ་ཅིག་འདོན་པའི་ཆོད་སེམས་ཡོད།

into a book, and leave that published book for my son.

I'd like to end with a few verses of what I wrote

ངས་ཨ་ཕའི་སྐུ་ཕུང་ཞུགས་འབུལ་བྱེད་ས་ནས་བྲིས་བའི་ཚིག་ཕྲེང་ཁག་ཅིག་དང་མཉམ་དུ་

at my father's cremation.

སྐད་རིགས་སྨྲ་བ་ཚོས་བརྡ་སྤྲོད་ཀྱི་ནོར་འཕྱུག་ལ་གུ་ཡངས་གཏོང་རོགས།

because I've not looked at it in the last 10 years.

གང་ལེགས་ཞེ་ན། འདས་པའི་ལོ་ངོ་༡༠་རིང་ལ་ངས་འདི་ལ་ལྟ་རྒྱུ་བྱུང་མེད།

I took it out for the first time to come here.

ངས་འདིར་ཡོང་ཆེད་འདི་ཐོག་དང་པོར་ཕྱིར་བཏོན་པ་ཡིན།

"Picture in a frame, ashes in a bottle,

"སྒྲོམ་གྱི་ནང་གི་པར། དམ་བུའི་ནང་གི་གོ་ཐལ།

boundless energy confined in the bottle,

དམ་བུའི་ནང་དུ་བསགས་པའི་དཔག་མེད་ཀྱི་ནུས་པས།

forcing me to deal with reality,

ང་ལ་བདེན་དོན་དང་གདོང་གཏད་བཅུག་སོང་ལ།

forcing me to deal with being grown up.

ང་རང་ནར་སོན་པའང་ཤེས་བཅུག་སོང་།

I hear you and I know that you would want me to be strong,

ངས་ཁྱེད་ཐོས་བྱུང་། ཁྱེད་ནས་ང་སྙིང་སྟོབས་ཅན་བྱེད་དགོས་ཀྱི་ཡོད་པ་དེ་ཧ་གོ་གི་ཡོད་ཀྱང་།

but right now, I am being sucked down, surrounded

ད་ལྟ། ང་རང་ཚོར་བའི་དྲག་རླབས་ཀྱིས་

and suffocated by these raging emotional waters,

འཇིབས་ཤིང་། མཐའ་ནས་བསྐོར་ལ།

craving to cleanse my soul, trying to emerge

རང་གི་རྣམ་ཤེས་གཙང་བཟོ་བྱེད་འདུན་དང་། གཞི་རྩ་བརྟན་པོ་ཞིག་གི་ཐོག་ཏུ།

on a firm footing one more time, to keep on fighting and flourishing

ཡང་བསྐྱར་ཐེངས་གཅིག་ལངས་ཏེ། མུ་མཐུད་འཐབ་རྩོད་དང་། ལས་རླུང་འཕྱུར་བའི་འབད་བརྩོན་

just as you taught me.

ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་ལབ་པ་ལྟར་བྱེད་ཀྱི་ཡོད།

Your encouraging whispers in my whirlpool of despair,

ངའི་རེ་ཆད་ཀྱི་རྦ་འཁོར་ཁྲོད་དུ་ཡོད་པའི་ཁྱེད་ཀྱི་སེམས་ཤུགས་སྦར་བའི་ངག་ཤུབ་དག་གིས་

holding me and heaving me to shores of sanity,

བློ་བདེ་བག་ཕེབས་ཀྱི་མཚོ་འགྲམ་དུ་བཟུང་ཞིང་འདེགས་བཞིན།

to live again and to love again."
