So I thought, "I will talk about death."

".وەها بیرم کردەوە،"کە لەسەرمردن قسە بکەم.

Seemed to be the passion today.

کە لە ئێستادا وەک پەرۆشیەک دەردەکەوێت.

Actually, it's not about death.

لە ڕاستیدا، ئەوە دەربارەی مردن نییە.

It's inevitable, terrible, but really what I want to talk about is,

سامناکە، هەردەبێت، بەڵام ئەوەیە دەمەوێت قسەی لەسەر بکەم.

I'm just fascinated by the legacy people leave when they die.

That's what I want to talk about.

So Art Buchwald left his legacy of humor with a video

that appeared soon after he died, saying,

"Hi! I'm Art Buchwald, and I just died."

And Mike, who I met at Galapagos, a trip which I won at TED,

is leaving notes on cyberspace where he is chronicling

And my father left me a legacy of his handwriting

In the last two years of his life, when he was sick,

He wrote about my strengths, weaknesses,

and gentle suggestions for improvement,

quoting specific incidents, and held a mirror to my life.

گێڕانەوەی ڕووداوە تایبەتەکان، ئاوێنەیەکی هەڵگرت بوو بۆ ژیانم.

After he died, I realized that no one writes to me anymore.

دوای مردنی ئەو، من هەستم بەوە کرد کە چیتر کەسی تر بۆم نانوسێ.

Handwriting is a disappearing art.

دەستنووسی هونەرێکی ونبووە.

I'm all for email and thinking while typing,

من قایلم بە پۆستی ئەلیکترۆنی و بیرکردنەوە لە کاتی نوسیندا،

but why give up old habits for new?

بەڵام بۆچی واز لە خووە کۆنەکان بهێنین لەبەر هی نوێ؟

Why can't we have letter writing and email exchange in our lives?

بۆچی ناتوانین نامە نوسین و ئیمەیڵ گۆڕینەوەمان هەبێت لە ژیاندا؟

There are times when I want to trade all those years

کاتی وا هەیە کە دەمەوێت سەودای هەموو ئەو ساڵانە بکەم

that I was too busy to sit with my dad and chat with him,

کە زۆر سەرقاڵ بووم بۆ دانیشتن و قسە کردن لەگەڵی،

and trade all those years for one hug.

هەموو ئەو ساڵانە سەودا پێ بکەم بۆ باوەشێک.

But too late.

بەڵام زۆر درەنگە.

But that's when I take out his letters and I read them,

بەڵام کاتێک نامەکانم هێناو خوێندمەوە،

and the paper that touched his hand is in mine,

و کاغەزێک کە ئەو دەستی لێداوە هی منە،

and I feel connected to him.

و هەستم کرد بەستراوم بە ئەوەوە.

So maybe we all need to leave our children

بۆیە لەوانەیە هەموومان پێویست بکات کە منداڵەکانمان بەجێ بهێڵین

with a value legacy, and not a financial one.

لەگەڵ میراتی بایەخ، و نەک لەگەڵ دارایی.

A value for things with a personal touch --

نرخ بۆ شتەکان بە جێدەستی کەسی

an autographed book, a soul-searching letter.

کتێبێکی واژوو کراو، نامەیەکی گیان بزوێن.

If a fraction of this powerful TED audience

گەر بەشێکی کەمی بینەرانی TED

could be inspired to buy a beautiful paper --

هان بدرێت بۆ کڕینی کاغەزی جوانی

John, it'll be a recycled one -- and write a beautiful letter

to someone they love, we actually may start a revolution

in the audience know I hound you for them --

لەناو بینەران دەزانن بۆ ئەوانە دواتاندەکەوم

and CDs too, Tracy.

و سی دییش هەروەها، شوێنەوار.

I plan to publish my own notebook.

پلانم وایە کە تیانوسی خۆم بڵاو بکەمەوە.

As I witnessed my father's body being swallowed by fire,

کاتێک شایەدی جەستەی باوکم بووم هەڵدەوەشا بەهۆی ئاگر،

I sat by his funeral pyre and wrote.

من لای داربەستی تەرمەکە ی دانیشتم و نوسیم.

I have no idea how I'm going to do it,

بیرۆکەم نییە چۆن بیکەم

but I am committed to compiling his thoughts and mine

من پەیوەستم بە یەکخستنی بیرۆکەکانی من و ئەو

into a book, and leave that published book for my son.

بۆ کتێبێک، ئەوە بە بڵاوکراوەی جێ دێڵم بۆ کوڕەکەم.

I'd like to end with a few verses of what I wrote

حەزدەکەم بە چەند دێڕێک کۆتای بهێنم نوسیمە

at my father's cremation.

لە کاتی سوتانی لاشەی باوکم.

And those linguists, please pardon the grammar,

و ئەو زمانەوانەکان، تکایە لە ڕێزمانەکە ببورن،

because I've not looked at it in the last 10 years.

چونکە سەیرم نەکردوە لە دە ساڵی ڕابردوەوە.

I took it out for the first time to come here.

بۆ یەکەم جار دەرم هێنا کە هاتم بۆ ئێرە.

"Picture in a frame, ashes in a bottle,

وێنە لە چوارچێوەدا،خۆڵەمێش لە شوشەدا،

boundless energy confined in the bottle,

وزەیەکی بێ سنور کپکراوە لە شوشەیەکدا،

forcing me to deal with reality,

ناچارم دەکات ڕەفتار لەگەڵ دروستی بکەم،

forcing me to deal with being grown up.

زۆرم لێدەکات کە ڕەفتار لەگەڵ گەورەبوون بکەم.

I hear you and I know that you would want me to be strong,

من گوێم لێتە و دەزانم دەتەوێت کە بەهێز بم،

but right now, I am being sucked down, surrounded

بەڵام ئێستا،من ڕاکێشراوم بۆ خوارەوە ،دەورەدراوم

and suffocated by these raging emotional waters,

وخنکاوم بە ئاوی هەڵچوی سۆزەوە،

craving to cleanse my soul, trying to emerge

ئارەزوی بۆ پاکردنەوەی گیانم،هەوڵدەدات بۆ دەرکەوتن

on a firm footing one more time, to keep on fighting and flourishing

لە بناخەیەکی جێگیر جارێکی تر،بۆ بەردەوام بوون لە شەڕو گەشانەوە

just as you taught me.

وەک ئەوەی تۆ فێرت کردم.

Your encouraging whispers in my whirlpool of despair,

هاندانی تۆ چرپەدەکات لە گێژاوی حەزەکانم،

holding me and heaving me to shores of sanity,

هەڵم دەگرێت و لە کەناری ژیری جێمدێڵێت،

to live again and to love again."

بۆ ژیان کردن و خۆشویستن دووبارە".
