So I thought, "I will talk about death."

तो मैने सोचा, "मैं मौत पर बात करूँगी।"

Seemed to be the passion today.

आज का ख़ास विषय यही लगता है।

Actually, it's not about death.

असल में, मेरी बात मौत के बारे में नहीं है।

It's inevitable, terrible, but really what I want to talk about is,

वो तो होगी ही। मै ये कहना चाहती हूँ कि

I'm just fascinated by the legacy people leave when they die.

मैं हैरान हूँ उस अमूल्य विरासत पर लोग अपने पीछे छोड जाते हैं

That's what I want to talk about.

और में उस पर ही कुछ कहना चाहती हूँ।

So Art Buchwald left his legacy of humor with a video

आर्ट बुच्वल्ड अपनी हास्य की विरासत को एक विडियो में छोड गये जो उन्के

that appeared soon after he died, saying,

मरने के बाद आया। मरते वक्त वो बोले,

"Hi! I'm Art Buchwald, and I just died."

"हेलो! मैं आर्ट बुच्वल्ड हूँ और मैं बस अभी अभी मरा हूँ।"

And Mike, who I met at Galapagos, a trip which I won at TED,

is leaving notes on cyberspace where he is chronicling

his journey through cancer.

And my father left me a legacy of his handwriting

और मेरे पिता हाथ की लिखाई की विरासत छोड गये

through letters and a notebook.

In the last two years of his life, when he was sick,

अपने आख़िरी दो सालों में, जो बीमारी में बीते

he filled a notebook with his thoughts about me.

उन्होंने मुझ पर अपने विचारों से एक नोटबुक भर डाली।

He wrote about my strengths, weaknesses,

उन्होनें मेरी अच्छाईयों और कमियों पर लिखा,

and gentle suggestions for improvement,

और सुधार के नुस्ख़े सुझाये,

quoting specific incidents, and held a mirror to my life.

ख़ास किस्सों की याद दिलाते हुए, और मुझे आइना सा दिखाते रहे।

After he died, I realized that no one writes to me anymore.

जब वो चले गये, मैने पाया कि कोई मुझे चिट्ठी ही नहीं लिखता

Handwriting is a disappearing art.

हाथ-की-लिखाई लुप्त होती कला हो गयी है।

I'm all for email and thinking while typing,

मतलब ईमेल और सोचते हुये टाइप करते जान बढिया है

but why give up old habits for new?

मगर पुरानी आदतों को नई के लिये क्यों दरकिनार कर दें?

Why can't we have letter writing and email exchange in our lives?

हम चिट्ठियाँ और ईमेल दोनों ही क्यूंँ नहीं लिख सकते हैं?

There are times when I want to trade all those years

कभी कभी लगता है कि वो सारे साल

that I was too busy to sit with my dad and chat with him,

जो व्यस्तता में बिना पिता से बात किये, हँसे-बोले निकल गये

and trade all those years for one hug.

कोई ले ले, और बस एक बार उन्हें कस के गले लगाने दे,

But too late.

मगर अब देर हो चुकी है।

But that's when I take out his letters and I read them,

मगर इन्हीं लम्हों में मैं उनके लिखे ख़त निकाल कर पढती हूँ,

and the paper that touched his hand is in mine,

और वो काग़ज़ के टुकडे जो उन्होंने छुये थे,

and I feel connected to him.

उन्हें छू कर उनसे जुडाव महसूस करती हूँ।

So maybe we all need to leave our children

हो सकता है कि हम सब को अपने बच्चों के लिये

with a value legacy, and not a financial one.

कुछ ज़ायदाद छोड्नी ही चाहिये, - रुपये-पैसे के अलावा

A value for things with a personal touch --

अपनेपन से भरी चीजों की कद्र --

an autographed book, a soul-searching letter.

कोई ऑटोग्राफ़ की किताब, कोई छू जाने वाली चिट्ठी

If a fraction of this powerful TED audience

टेड में आये महत्वपूर्ण लोगों में से केवल कुछ ही

could be inspired to buy a beautiful paper --

अगर सुंदर सा काग़ज़ ले कर --

John, it'll be a recycled one -- and write a beautiful letter

-- जॉन, ये रि-सायकल्ड होगा -- एक ख़ूबसूरत सा ख़त लिखें

to someone they love, we actually may start a revolution

किसी को जिस से प्यार हो, हो सकता है कि हम एक बदलाव ले आयें

where our children may go to penmanship classes.

जहाँ हमारे बच्चे बकायदा सुलेख सीखने लगें।

So what do I plan to leave for my son?

तो मेरा क्या प्लान है अपने बेटे के लिये?

I collect autographed books, and those of you authors

-आटोग्राफ़ जोडना। और यहाँ आये लेखकों को

in the audience know I hound you for them --

मैं उनके लिये तंग भी कर चुकी हूँ --

and CDs too, Tracy.

और सी डी भी, (ट्रेसी!)

I plan to publish my own notebook.

मैं अपनी नोटबुक छपवाना चाहती हूँ।

As I witnessed my father's body being swallowed by fire,

जब मैने अपने पिता के शरीर को अग्नि के हवाले होते देखा,

I sat by his funeral pyre and wrote.

मैंने उनकी चिता के पास बैठ कर लिखा।

I have no idea how I'm going to do it,

जाने कैसे ये होगा पर

but I am committed to compiling his thoughts and mine

मैं अपने और पिता के विचारों को एकत्र करूँगी

into a book, and leave that published book for my son.

एक किताब में और उसे अपने बेटे के लिये छपवा कर छोड जाऊँगी।

I'd like to end with a few verses of what I wrote

अंत में अपनी कुछ पंक्तियाँ कहूँगी

at my father's cremation.

जो मैने पिता कें अंतिम संस्कार पर लिखीं

And those linguists, please pardon the grammar,

भाषाविद मेरी भूलों को माफ़ करें,

because I've not looked at it in the last 10 years.

क्योंकि पिछले दस सालों में मैने इन्हें कभी नहीं खोला

I took it out for the first time to come here.

और आज यहाँ आने के लिये ही ख़ास निकाला।

"Picture in a frame, ashes in a bottle,

फ़्रेम में तस्वीर, बोतल में राख़,

boundless energy confined in the bottle,

बोतल मॆ जैसे भर दी हो आग़,

forcing me to deal with reality,

खोले असलियत का ढक्कन,

forcing me to deal with being grown up.

कहती देखो, आया बडप्प्न,

I hear you and I know that you would want me to be strong,

तुम देते सुनाई, मुझे होना है दृढ,

but right now, I am being sucked down, surrounded

मगर दम है घुट्ता, जाती हूँ लड

and suffocated by these raging emotional waters,

भावनाओं से भरे - दहाडते ये समंदर,

craving to cleanse my soul, trying to emerge

रूह को भिगोते, उभरते इस कदर

on a firm footing one more time, to keep on fighting and flourishing

फिर बढी हूं आगे, निखरती निडर

just as you taught me.

जैसा तुमने कहा दिन भर हर पहर।

Your encouraging whispers in my whirlpool of despair,

हौसलों की फ़ुस्फ़ुसाहट, मेरे गम-भँवर में,

holding me and heaving me to shores of sanity,

तुम्हीं हो वो नौका, ले चलो तक सहर,

to live again and to love again."

जिये जाना अच्छा निरंतर निरंतर।"
