I'm going to talk today

about the pleasures of everyday life.

عن السرور والسعادة في حياتنا اليومية..

But I want to begin with a story

ولكن أريد أن أبدأ بقصة

of an unusual and terrible man.

عن شخص فظيع غير اعتيادي

This is Hermann Goering.

إنه "هيرمان غورينغ"

Goering was Hitler's second in command in World War II,

"هيرمان غورينغ" كان النائب الثاني لهتلر في الحرب العالمية الثانية

his designated successor.

وخليفته المنتظر

And like Hitler,

وكان مثل هتلر

Goering fancied himself a collector of art.

مهووس بجمع القطع الفنية

He went through Europe, through World War II,

وقد جال أوروبا كلها خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية

stealing, extorting and occasionally buying

يسرق و ينهب وأحيانا يشتري

various paintings for his collection.

العديد من اللوحات الفنية لكي يضمها الى مجموعته

And what he really wanted was something by Vermeer.

وقد أراد حقاً ان يشتري لوحة فنية من رسم " فيرمير "

Hitler had two of them, and he didn't have any.

لان هتلر كان يملك لوحتين لذلك الرسام بينما هو لم يكن يملك أياً منها

So he finally found an art dealer,

وقد استطاع أن يجد تاجر لوحات فنية

a Dutch art dealer named Han van Meegeren,

من أصل هولندي أسمه "هان فان ميجيرين"

who sold him a wonderful Vermeer

وقد باعه لوحة مميزة للفنان " فيرمير "

for the cost of what would now be 10 million dollars.

بما يوازي في ايامنا هذه 10 ملايين دولار

And it was his favorite artwork ever.

وقد كانت لوحته المفضلة

World War II came to an end,

وعندما انتهت الحرب العالمية الثانية

and Goering was captured, tried at Nuremberg

تم القاء القبض على "هيرمان غورينغ" .. وتمت محاكمته في نيرمبيرغ

and ultimately sentenced to death.

ومن ثم تم إحالته بصورة نهائية الى حكم الاعدام

Then the Allied forces went through his collections

ومن ثم استولت قوات التحالف على مجموعته الفنية

and found the paintings

ووجدوا اللوحات الفنية

and went after the people who sold it to him.

وحاولوا الرجوع الى الاشخاص الذين تم شراؤها منهم

And at some point the Dutch police came into Amsterdam

وفي مرحلة ما استطاعوا ان يصلوا الى البائع الهولندي "هان فان ميجيرين" والذي أُلقي القبض عليه

and arrested Van Meegeren.

في أمستردام من قبل الشرطة الهولندية

Van Meegeren was charged with the crime of treason,

ومن ثم تم إتهام "هان فان ميجيرين" بالخيانة العظمى

which is itself punishable by death.

وهي تهمة حكمها الموت

Six weeks into his prison sentence,

وبعد ستة اسابيع في السجن

van Meegeren confessed.

إعترف "هان فان ميجيرين"

But he didn't confess to treason.

ولكنه لم يعترف بالخيانة

He said, "I did not sell a great masterpiece

فقال " انا لم أبع لوحة فريدة

to that Nazi.

لذاك النازي ..

I painted it myself; I'm a forger."

لقد رسمتها بنفسي .. أنا مزور "

Now nobody believed him.

ولكن أحداً لم يصدقه

And he said, "I'll prove it.

فقال " سوف اثبت لكم هذا ..

Bring me a canvas and some paint,

احضروا لي فراشي رسم و بعض الألوان

and I will paint a Vermeer much better

وسوف أرسم لكم لوحة فريدة لفيرمير أفضل

than I sold that disgusting Nazi.

من تلك التي بعتها لذلك النازي

I also need alcohol and morphine, because it's the only way I can work."

ولكن أحضروا لي بعض المشروبات الروحية والمورفين .. لانني لا أستطيع العمل من دونها "

So they brought him in.

وقد احضروا له ذلك ..

He painted a beautiful Vermeer.

وقد رسم لوحة مميزة لفيرمير

And then the charges of treason were dropped.

ومن ثم اسقطت عنه تهمت الخيانة

He had a lesser charge of forgery,

وحوكم بتهمة التزوير

got a year sentence

والتي كان عقابها في تلك الاثناء نحو عام

and died a hero to the Dutch people.

ومن ثم مات كبطل هولندي

There's a lot more to be said about van Meegeren,

وهناك الكثير ليقال عن "هان فان ميجيرين"

but I want to turn now to Goering,

ولكني أريد العودة إلى "هيرمان غورينغ"

who's pictured here being interrogated at Nuremberg.

والذي يظهر في الصوة هنا أثناء التحقيق

Now Goering was, by all accounts, a terrible man.

إن "هيرمان غورينغ" هو شخص سيء ..

Even for a Nazi, he was a terrible man.

حتى بالنسبة لنازي .. فهو شخص سيء

His American interrogators described him

وقد وصفه المحققون الامريكيون

as an amicable psychopath.

بأنه انيس و مختل عقليا

But you could feel sympathy

ولكن يمكنكم أن تشعروا بالتعاطف معه

for the reaction he had

عندما تنظرون الى ردة فعله

when he was told that his favorite painting

عندما علم ان لوحته المفضلة

was actually a forgery.

كانت مزورة

According to his biographer,

وتبعاً لكاتب سيرة حياته

"He looked as if for the first time

" لقد بدى و كأنه أكتشف لأول

he had discovered there was evil in the world."

مرة وجود الشر في هذه الحياة "

And he killed himself soon afterwards.

ومن ثم إنتحر

He had discovered after all

لقد اكتشف في نهاية المطاف

that the painting he thought was this

ان اللوحة التي ظن أنها هذه ..

was actually that.

هي بالفعل هذه

It looked the same,

انها تبدو نفس اللوحة

but it had a different origin, it was a different artwork.

ولكنها من مكون آخر .. إنها عملٌ آخر

It wasn't just him who was in for a shock.

ولكنه لم يكن فحسب المتفاجىء الوحيد

Once van Meegeren was on trial, he couldn't stop talking.

ف"هان فان ميجيرين" عندما كان في المحكمة .. اعترف بالكثير من اللوحات التي زورها

And he boasted about all the great masterpieces

واخذ يتبجح بالامر

that he himself had painted

على أنه قام بتزوير الكثير من اللوحات

that were attributed to other artists.

وانه باع منها على انها لرسامين عالميين

In particular, "The Supper at Emmaus"

من مثل " العشاء لدى عائلة إيماوس "

which was viewed as Vermeer's finest masterpiece, his best work --

والتي عرضت على أنها احد لوحات فيرمير المبدعة وصنفت من اجمل لوحاته

people would come [from] all over the world to see it --

حيث كان يأتي إليها الزوار من أقاصي العالم

was actually a forgery.

من اجل أن يشاهدوها .. ولكنها في النهاية تبين انها مزورة

It was not that painting, but that painting.

انها ليست هذه اللوحة .. بل تلك

And when that was discovered,

وعندما تم اكتشاف ذلك

it lost all its value and was taken away from the museum.

فقدت قيمتها .. وتم ازالتها من المتحف

Why does this matter?

ولكن مالذي يهم في الموضوع

I'm a psychologists -- why do origins matter so much?

أيها الاطباء النفسيون .. لماذا الأصل مهمٌ لهذه الدرجة ..

Why do we respond so much

لماذا نتفاعل جداً

to our knowledge of where something comes from?

مع معرفتنا مصدر الشيء او اللوحة او القطعة

Well there's an answer that many people would give.

حسناً .. هناك جواب متداول بين الناس

Many sociologists like Veblen and Wolfe

العديد من الاطباء الاجتماعين مثل فيبلين و ولفي

would argue that the reason why we take origins so seriously

سيحاججون بأن سبب أخذنا مكون الشيء بصورة جدية

is because we're snobs, because we're focused on status.

هو أننا سطحيون و ماديون .. وكل مافي الامر اننا ننظر الى القشور والمكانة الاجتماعية

Among other things,

فمن بين العديد من الامور

if you want to show off how rich you are, how powerful you are,

التي يمكن ان يقوم بها الفرد لكي يبدو غنياً .. ومتميزاً .. وقوياً

it's always better to own an original than a forgery

هو ان يحصل على الدوام على الاصل .. لا التقليد من كل شيء

because there's always going to be fewer originals than forgeries.

لانه في الحياة الواقعية يوجد القليل من " الاصل " والكثير من " التقليد "

I don't doubt that that plays some role,

وهذا بلا ادنى مجال للشك يلعب دوراً في اهمية الأصل

but what I want to convince you of today

ولكن ما أريد اقناعكم به اليوم ..

is that there's something else going on.

هو ان هناك شيء آخر يلعب دوراً في هذا

I want to convince you

اريد ان اقنعكم ..

that humans are, to some extent, natural born essentialists.

ان البشر .. إلى حد ما .. ولدوا " جوهريين "

What I mean by this

ما اعنيه بهذا ..

is we don't just respond to things as we see them,

اننا لا نتفاعل فحسب مع ما نراه

or feel them, or hear them.

او ما نشعره به او ما نسمعه

Rather, our response is conditioned on our beliefs,

بل اننا نتفاعل مع الامور تبعاً لمعتقداتنا و قناعاتنا

about what they really are, what they came from,

وعلى ماهية الامور .. ومصدرها

what they're made of, what their hidden nature is.

ومما صنعت .. وماهي طبيعتها الدفينة

I want to suggest that this is true,

وانا اريد ان افترض ان هذا صحيحاً

not just for how we think about things,

ليس فحسب لطريقة تفكيرنا بالامور

but how we react to things.

بل أيضاً تجاه ردود افعلنا

So I want to suggest that pleasure is deep --

ما أريد قوله ان السرور أمرٌ عميق جداً ..

and that this isn't true

وهذا ليس صحيحاً فحسب

just for higher level pleasures like art,

فيما يخص المستويات الراقية منها مثل الفن

but even the most seemingly simple pleasures

ولكن الامر ينطبق أيضاً على ادنى انواع السرور

are affected by our beliefs about hidden essences.

والتي تتأثر بواسطة معتقداتنا و مكنوناتنا الداخلية

So take food.

لنأخذ الطعام على سبيل المثال

Would you eat this?

هل تأكلون هذه ؟

Well, a good answer is, "It depends. What is it?"

حسناً .. الجواب يعمد على السؤال " من أين أتت "

Some of you would eat it if it's pork, but not beef.

البعض سيأكلها إن كانت لحم خنزير .. وليست عجل

Some of you would eat it if it's beef, but not pork.

والآخر سيأكلها إن كانت عجل .. وليست لحم خنزير

Few of you would eat it if it's a rat

والبعض سيأكلها حتى لو كانت لحم فئران

or a human.

او لحم بشري

Some of you would eat it only if it's a strangely colored piece of tofu.

والبعض سيأكلها لمجرد ان يكون لونها يشبه لون اللحم المطهي مهما كان مضمونها

That's not so surprising.

وهذا ليس بجديد

But what's more interesting

ولكن ما هو مثير للاهتمام

is how it tastes to you

هو ان طعم اللحم يعتمد بصورة

will depend critically on what you think you're eating.

اساسية عما تظن انه هو عندما تأكله

So one demonstration of this was done with young children.

لقد عرض احدهم هذه الصورة على الاطفال

How do you make children

وكان السؤال كيف نجعل الاطفال

not just be more likely to eat carrots and drink milk,

يفضلون اكل الجزر وشرب الحليب

but to get more pleasure from eating carrots and drinking milk --

كيف نجعلهم سعداء اكثر حين أكل الجزر و شرب الحليب

to think they taste better?

وان نجعلهم يظنون ان نكهتهم أفضل

It's simple, you tell them they're from McDonald's.

ببساطة علينا ان نخبرهم انهم من ماكدونلدز

They believe McDonald's food is tastier,

لانهم يظنون ان الطعام في ماكدونلدز شهي اكثر

and it leads them to experience it as tastier.

مما يجعلهم يشعرون أن النكهة أفضل

How do you get adults to really enjoy wine?

وكيف يمكن ان نجعل البالغين يستمتعون اكثر بشرب الخمر

It's very simple:

بكل بساطة

pour it from an expensive bottle.

بأن يتم صبها من خلال عبوات باهظة الثمن

There are now dozens, perhaps hundreds of studies showing

هناك اليوم مايقارب عشرات وربما مئات الدراسات التي تشير الى هذه النتائج

that if you believe you're drinking the expensive stuff,

والتي تقول انه ان ظننت انك تشرب خمراً باهظ الكلفة

it tastes better to you.

فان طعمه سوف يكون اكثر شهية

This was recently done with a neuroscientific twist.

لقد تم اثبات ذلك مؤخراً بواسطة علم الاعصاب

They get people into a fMRI scanner,

لقد وضعوا بعض الاشخاص في جهاز الرنين المغناطيسي الوظيفي

and while they're lying there, through a tube,

وبينما هم هناك داخل الجهاز .. تم عرض مشهد فيديو عليهم

they get to sip wine.

يظهر جرعات من الخمر

In front of them on a screen is information about the wine.

ويوجد عليها معلومات عن ذلك الخمر

Everybody, of course,

الجميع بالطبع

drinks exactly the same wine.

شربوا نفس الخمر

But if you believe you're drinking expensive stuff,

ولكن ما تبين في الدراسة .. ان من يظن انه يشرب خمراً باهظ الكلفة

parts of the brain associated with pleasure and reward

فان اجزاء الدماغ المختصة بالسعادة و المكافأة تصبح فعالة

light up like a Christmas tree.

بصورة واضحة جداً

It's not just that you say it's more pleasurable, you say you like it more,

فالامر ليس فحسب انهم يقولون ان شرب الخمر ذاك اكثر متعة .. بل هم ايضا يشعرون بذلك

you really experience it in a different way.

فانت تشعر بصورة مغايرة عندما تظن انك تشرب شيئاً مختلف

Or take sex.

والامر ينطبق أيضاً على الجنس

These are stimuli I've used in some of my studies.

ساظهر لكم بعض الدراسات خاصتي

And if you simply show people these pictures,

واذا عرضت للناس هذه الصور

they'll say these are fairly attractive people.

سوف يقولون انها صور لاشخاص جذابون

But how attractive you find them,

ولكن كيف يبدو الاشخاص الجذابون

how sexually or romantically moved you are by them,

او انهم مثيرون جنسياً او رومانسيون

rests critically on who you think you're looking at.

عندما تعي من هم هؤلاء الاشخاص الذين تنظرون اليهم

You probably think the picture on the left is male,

مثلاً عندما تعرف ان الصورة التي على اليسار هي لذكر

the one on the right is female.

وتلك التي على اليمن هي لأنثى

If that belief turns out to be mistaken, it will make a difference.

فان ظننت أمراً آخر سوف تشعر بصورة أخرى

(Laughter)

It will make a difference if they turn out to be

سوف تشعر بصورة اخرى

much younger or much older than you think they are.

عندما تعرف الاعمار .. وان كان الصورة لاشخاص يافعين او هرمين بالعمر

It will make a difference if you were to discover

سوف تشعر بصورة مختلفة عندما تكتشف

that the person you're looking at with lust

ان الشخص الذي تشعر بالرغبة تجاهه

is actually a disguised version of your son or daughter,

هو صورة معدلة عن ابنك او ابنتك

your mother or father.

او والدك او والدتك

Knowing somebody's your kin typically kills the libido.

فعندما تعرف ان شخص ما يصل بقرابة لك فان ذلك سيقتل رغبتك الجنسية

Maybe one of the most heartening findings

واحدة من اهم الاكتشافات المتعلقة بالمشاعر

from the psychology of pleasure

والتي تقوم عليها اساسيات المتعة والسعادة

is there's more to looking good than your physical appearance.

ميزت بين اهمية الجاذبية الجسدية والجاذبية النفسية

If you like somebody, they look better to you.

فان كنت تحب احداً او كنت معجباً به .. فانه سيبدو جذاباً اكثر بالنسبة لك

This is why spouses in happy marriages

ولهذا فان الازواج في الزاوج السعيد

tend to think that their husband or wife

يظنون ان ازواجهم وازواجهن

looks much better than anyone else thinks that they do.

هم اكثر جمالاً مما هم عليه

A particularly dramatic example of this

وهناك مثال عملي على ذلك

comes from a neurological disorder known as Capgras syndrome.

جاء من باحثي العلم العصبي حيث اكتشفوا متلازمة " كابجراس "

So Capgras syndrome is a disorder

ان متلازمة " كابجراس " هي عطب

where you get a specific delusion.

يجعلك تتوهم وهماً معيناً

Sufferers of Capgras syndrome

المصابون بمتلازمة " كابجراس "

believe that the people they love most in the world

بظنون ان الاشخاص اللذين يحبونهم جداً

have been replaced by perfect duplicates.

قد تم ابدالهم بشخصيات بديلة مشابهة لهم تماما

Now often, a result of Capgras syndrome is tragic.

وعادة تكون نتائج متلازمة " كابجراس " كارثية

People have murdered those that they loved,

فقد قتلوا الاشخاص اللذين يجبونهم

believing that they were murdering an imposter.

حيث يظنون انهم بدلاء عنهم

But there's at least one case

ولكن هناك حالة

where Capgras syndrome had a happy ending.

كان ل متلازمة " كابجراس " نتائج سعيدة

This was recorded in 1931.

سجلت في عام 1931

"Research described a woman with Capgras syndrome

حيث قالت الابحاث ان احدى النساء افادت والتي كانت مصابة بمتلازمة " كابجراس "

who complained about her poorly endowed and sexually inadequate lover."

ان شريكها في الحياة لا يبدو ملائما و غير مثير جنسياً

But that was before she got Capgras syndrome.

وطبعا كان هذا قبل ان تصاب بمتلازمة " كابجراس "

After she got it, "She was happy to report

ولكن بعد ان اصيبت بمتلازمة " كابجراس " اصبحت سعيدة جداً

that she has discovered that he possessed a double

وارتفعت سعادتها ورضاها للضعف

who was rich, virile, handsome and aristocratic."

وقالت عن شريكها انه حسن المظهر وجذاب ومثير جداً

Of course, it was the same man,

وطبعا كان ذات الشريك

but she was seeing him in different ways.

ولكنها كانت تنظر اليه بصورة مغايرة

As a third example,

وهناك مثال ثالث

consider consumer products.

لناخذ مثال على المنتجات الاستهلاكية

So one reason why you might like something is its utility.

فعبض المنتجات تاخذ قيمتها من مكنوناتها

You can put shoes on your feet; you can play golf with golf clubs;

فانت يمكن ان ترتدي هذا الحذاء او تلعب الجولف بهذه الادوات

and chewed up bubble gum doesn't do anything at all for you.

او تستخدم هذه العلكة .. دون ان يعني لك هذا شيئاً

But each of these three objects has value

ولكن كل واحدة من تلك الامور الثلاث لها قيمة ثمينة

above and beyond what it can do for you

فوق قيمتها الحقيقية

based on its history.

بسبب انها تملك تاريخاً ومكوناً خاصاً بها

The golf clubs were owned by John F. Kennedy

فعدة الجولف هذه كانت مملوكة من قبل جون كينيدي

and sold for three-quarters of a million dollars at auction.

وقد بيعت بثلاثة ارباع مليون دولار في مزاد علني

The bubble gum was chewed up by pop star Britney Spears

والعلكة تلك كانت قد استخدمت من قبل المغنية " بريتني سبيرز "

and sold for several hundreds of dollars.

وقد بيعت بعدة مئات من الدولارات

And in fact, there's a thriving market

في الحقيقة هناك سوق خاص لهذه المنتجات ..

in the partially eaten food of beloved people.

لبيع الوجبات التي خلفها المشاهير

The shoes are perhaps the most valuable of all.

وربما الاحذية هي الاكثر قيمة

According to an unconfirmed report,

لانه وتبعاً لتقرير غير مؤكد

a Saudi millionaire offered 10 million dollars

فقد عرض مليونير سعودي 10 ملايين دولار

for this pair of shoes.

لاجل زوج الاحذية تلك

They were the ones thrown at George Bush

والتي تم رميها على الرئيس الامريكي جورج بوش

at an Iraqi press conference several years ago.

في مؤتمر صحفي في دولة العراق منذ عدة سنوات

(Applause)

Now this attraction to objects

وهذه الجاذبية التي تمتلكها المنتجات

doesn't just work for celebrity objects.

لاتكتسب قيمتها فحسب جراء المشاهير

Each one of us, most people,

فكل شخص منا .. والعديد من الاشخاص

have something in our life that's literally irreplaceable,

لديهم أشياء خاصة بهم لايمكن تعويضها على الاطلاق

in that it has value because of its history --

ولديهم قيمة خاصة بسبب تاريخها المميز لنا

maybe your wedding ring, maybe your child's baby shoes --

ربما خاتم الزواج .. وربما حذاء طفلك الاول

so that if it was lost, you couldn't get it back.

والتي ان فقدت لا يمكن تعويضها

You could get something that looked like it or felt like it,

فانت يمكن الحصول على منتج يشببها تماماً .. ولكن لن تشعر بذات الشعور تجاهه

but you couldn't get the same object back.

ولايمكن ان تسترد ذلك المنتج ان فقدته

With my colleagues George Newman and Gil Diesendruck,

لقد قمت مع زملائي " جورج نيومان " و " جيل ديسندرك " ببعض الأبحاث

we've looked to see what sort of factors, what sort of history, matters

لقد بحثنا العوامل التاريخية والمادية

for the objects that people like.

التي تدفع الاشخاص للاهتمام بالسلع

So in one of our experiments,

في واحدة من تجاربنا

we asked people to name a famous person who they adored,

طرحنا سؤلاً عن شخصية شهيرة يفضلها المُختبرون

a living person they adored.

شخص يحبونه

So one answer was George Clooney.

جاوبت إحداهن " جورج كلوني "

Then we asked them,

ومن ثم طرحنا سؤلاً آخراً

"How much would you pay for George Clooney's sweater?"

" كم يمكن ان تدفعوا مقابل سترة جورج كلوني

And the answer is a fair amount --

كانت الاجوبة تتضمن

more than you would pay for a brand new sweater

سعراً اعلى من سعر سترة جديدة ذات ماركة مشهورة

or a sweater owned by somebody who you didn't adore.

او سعر سترة لشخص لا يحبونه

Then we asked other groups of subjects --

ثم سألنا مجموعة أخرى

we gave them different restrictions

ووضعنا ضوابط جديدة ..

and different conditions.

وأوضاع أخرى

So for instance, we told some people,

فعلى سبيل المثال

"Look, you can buy the sweater,

" سئلنا هل تشترون سترة لشخصية شهيرة

but you can't tell anybody you own it,

ولكن دون أن تخبروا احدهم عن شرائكم لها

and you can't resell it."

كما انكم لا تستطيعون اعادة بيعها "

That drops the value of it,

وهذا ادى الى تخفيض قيمتها

suggesting that that's one reason why we like it.

وهذا يوضح احد اهم الاسباب التي تجعلنا نفضل تلك السلع

But what really causes an effect

وان ما يسبب التأثير الاساسي الاكبر كان عندما

is you tell people, "Look, you could resell it, you could boast about it,

طرحنا فكرة " انه يمكنك اعادة بيعها .. ويمكنك التبجح بشرائها ..

but before it gets to you,

ولكن قبل ان تقوم بشراء تلك السترة ..

it's thoroughly washed."

سوف نقوم بغسلها "

That causes a huge drop in the value.

وهذا خفض من قيمتها بصورة كبيرة

As my wife put it, "You've washed away the Clooney cooties."

تصوروا زوجتي تقول " بغسيلك السترة لقد قمت بإفناء جورج كلوني "

So let's go back to art.

لنعد الى الفن

I would love a Chagall. I love the work of Chagall.

أنا أحب شيغال .. احب عمله

If people want to get me something at the end of the conference,

ان اردتم ان تهدوني هدية ما .. في نهاية المؤتمر

you could buy me a Chagall.

اريد شيئاً لشيغال

But I don't want a duplicate,

ولكن لا اريد شيئاً تقليداً

even if I can't tell the difference.

حتى لو لم اكن أعي الفرق

That's not because, or it's not simply because,

ليس بسبب انني .. او ربما انني

I'm a snob and want to boast about having an original.

مهوس واريد التبجح لاني املك شيئاً اصلياً

Rather, it's because I want something that has a specific history.

انما لانني أريد ان أملك شيئاً له تاريخ محدد

In the case of artwork,

في حال اللوحات الفنية

the history is special indeed.

فان التاريخ مهم جداً

The philosopher Denis Dutton

makes the case that, "The value of an artwork

حاجج في قوله .. " ان قيمة الفن

is rooted in assumptions about the human performance underlying its creation."

متجذرة في الحالة الابداعية التي تعتري الفنان حين صنع فنه "

And that could explain the difference

وهذا يميز الفرق

between an original and a forgery.

بين الاصل والتزوير

They may look alike, but they have a different history.

صحيح ان الصورة متطابقة .. ولكن كل لوحة تحمل تاريخاً مختلفاً

The original is typically the product of a creative act,

فالاصلية هي نتاج حالة ابداعية

the forgery isn't.

ولكن المزورة فهي لا

I think this approach can explain differences

واعتقد ان هذه الفكرة توضح الفرق

in people's taste in art.

في مذاق الناس فيما يتعلق بالفن

This is a work by Jackson Pollock.

هذه ل "جاكسون بولوك"

Who here likes the work of Jackson Pollock?

من هنا يحب أعمال "جاكسون بولوك"؟

Okay. Who here, it does nothing for them?

حسناً .. من هنا لا يعنيه عمله على الاطلاق ؟

They just don't like it.

الكثير لا يحبون أعماله

I'm not going to make a claim about who's right,

ولكن أريد ان اوضح نقطة عن من هو الصائب هنا

but I will make an empirical claim

اريد ان اوضح بحجة تجريبية

about people's intuitions,

عن حدس البشر

which is that, if you like the work of Jackson Pollock,

في الحقيقية ان من يحب عمل "جاكسون بولوك"

you'll tend more so than the people who don't like it

فانه يميل للاعتقاد اكثر من اولئك اللذين لا يحبون عمل "جاكسون بولوك"

to believe that these works are difficult to create,

بأن عمله هو أمرٌ صعب

that they require a lot of time and energy

ويحتاج الكثير من الوقت والمجهود

and creative energy.

والقدرة الابداعية

I use Jackson Pollock on purpose as an example

لقد طرحت اسم "جاكسون بولوك" من اجل هدف معين

because there's a young American artist

لان هناك فنانة امريكية صغيرة

who paints very much in the style of Jackson Pollock,

ترسم باسلوب مشابه لاسلوب "جاكسون بولوك"

and her work was worth

وكان عملها بقيمة

many tens of thousands of dollars --

تعادل عشرات الالاف من الدولارات

in large part because she's a very young artist.

لانها بصورة خاصة يافعة في العمر

This is Marla Olmstead

هذه هي " مارلا أولمستيد "

who did most of her work when she was three years old.

والتي رسمت معظم لوحاتها عندما كانت في الثالثة من العمر

The interesting thing about Marla Olmstead

والامر المميز الذي حصل ل " مارلا أولمستيد "

is her family made the mistake

هو ان عائلها قاموا بدعوة

of inviting the television program 60 Minutes II into their house

البرنامج التلفزيوني ( 60 دقيقة ) الى منزلهم

to film her painting.

من اجل تصوير عمل " مارلا أولمستيد "

And they then reported that her father was coaching her.

ومن ثم صرح معدوا البرنامج ان والد " مارلا أولمستيد " كان يوجهها اثناء الرسم

When this came out on television,

وعندما ظهرت الحلقة على التلفاز

the value of her art dropped to nothing.

انحدرت قيمة لوحات " مارلا أولمستيد " الى الصفر

It was the same art, physically,

انها اللوحات ذاتها " مادياً "

but the history had changed.

ولكن التاريخ المتجذر فيها .. قد تغير .. ففقدت قيمتها

I've been focusing now on the visual arts,

دعونا نترك قليلاً الفن البصري

but I want to give two examples from music.

سوف اعطيكم مثالين عن الموسيقى

This is Joshua Bell, a very famous violinist.

هذا هو " جوشوا بيل " وهو عازف كمان شهير

And the Washington Post reporter Gene Weingarten

وقد قرر احد الصحفيين والذي يدعى " جين وينجارتين "

decided to enlist him for an audacious experiment.

ان يدفع به الى تجربة " غريبة جرئية "

The question is: How much would people like Joshua Bell,

وكان الهدف منها " معرفة كم يحب الناس فعلاً " جوشوا بيل "

the music of Joshua Bell,

أو بالأصح موسيقى " جوشوا بيل "

if they didn't know they were listening to Joshua Bell?

إن لم يعرفوا أن " جوشوا بيل " هو العازف ؟

So he got Joshua Bell to take his million dollar violin

ماحدث ان " جوشوا بيل " قام بحمل كمانه ذا المليون دولار

down to a Washington D.C. subway station

وذهب الى محطة مترو الانفاق الخاصة بواشنطن

and stand in the corner and see how much money he would make.

ووقف في إحدى الزوايا .. وأخذ يعزف لكي يرى كم من المال سوف يجمع جراء ذلك

And here's a brief clip of this.

After being there for three-quarters of an hour,

وبعد ان بقي هناك لمدة ثلاثة ارباع الساعة

he made 32 dollars.

استطاع ان يجمع فحسب 32 دولار

Not bad. It's also not good.

ليس بالامر السيء .. كما انه ليس بالجيد

Apparently to really enjoy the music of Joshua Bell,

على ما يبدو الناس تفضل موسيقى " جوشوا بيل "

you have to know you're listening to Joshua Bell.

إن كانت تعي ان العازف هو فعلاً " جوشوا بيل "

He actually made 20 dollars more than that,

في الواقع لقد حقق 20 دولار مرة واحدة

but he didn't count it.

ولكنه لم يضفها الى حصيلته

Because this woman comes up --

لان ال20 تلك جاءت من إمرأة

you see at the end of the video -- she comes up.

تظهر في آخر المشهد ..

She had heard him at the Library of Congress a few weeks before

وهي كانت قد سمعت العازف " جوشوا بيل " في مكتبة الكونغرس منذ عدة اسابيع

at this extravagant black-tie affair.

في حفلة رسمية للطبقة المخملية

So she's stunned that he's standing in a subway station.

لذا صعقت عندما سمعته يعزف في محطة مترو الانفاق

So she's struck with pity.

وقامت بالتبرع اليه من منطلق الشفقة

She reaches into her purse and hands him a 20.

فمدت يدها الى حقيبتها وقامت بالتبرع ب20 دولار

The second example from music

المثال الموسيقي الثاني

is from John Cage's modernist composition,

هو " التموضع " لجون كاج

"4'33"."

أربعة دقائق و33 ثانية

As many of you know,

كما يعلم الجميع منكم

this is the composition where the pianist sits at a bench,

ان ذلك "التموضع" هي تلك التي يجلس فيها عازف البيانو على مقعده مواجها البيانو

opens up the piano

ومن ثم يفتح البيانو

and sits and does nothing for four minutes and 33 seconds --

ومن ثم يجلس لا يقوم بشيء لمدة اربعة دقائق و 33 ثانية

that period of silence.

هذه الفترة الصامتة

And people have different views on this.

للناس عدة وجهات نظر بخصوصها

But what I want to point out

ولكن أريد أن أنوه

is you can buy this from iTunes.

انه يمكن شراء ذلك " الصمت " من خلال موقع " آي تونز "

For a dollar 99,

بكلفة دولار و 99 سنتاً

you can listen to that silence,

يمكنك ان تستمتع بذلك الصمت

which is different than other forms of silence.

Now I've been talking so far about pleasure,

لقد كنت اتحدث عن السعادة ..

but what I want to suggest

ولكن أريد ان اضيف وانوه

is that everything I've said applies as well to pain.

الى ان كل شيء ذكرته ينطبق أيضاً على الألم

And how you think about what you're experiencing,

وطريقة تفكيرك حيال الامر تحدد كيفية مرورك به

your beliefs about the essence of it,

كما ان معتقداتك هي جوهر وجهة نظرك نحوه

affect how it hurts.

وتلك التي تحدد كيفية وكم تأثرك بذلك الالم

One lovely experiment

هناك تجربة مميزة

was done by Kurt Gray and Dan Wegner.

قام بها "كرت جراي " و " دان ويجنير "

What they did was they hooked up Harvard undergraduates

عندما قاموا بوصل طلاب من جامعة هارفر

to an electric shock machine.

بموصل كهربائي صاعق

And they gave them a series of painful electric shocks.

وكان على الطرف الآخر هناك من تم تخويله لاعطاء تلك الصعقات الكهربائية

So it was a series of five painful shocks.

وقد اخبر " اللذين سيتم صعقهم " أن هناك

Half of them are told that they're being given the shocks

خمس مستويات من الصعق

by somebody in another room,

وان من هو بالغرفة المجاورة مسؤول عن الصعق

but the person in the other room doesn't know they're giving them shocks.

لا يعرف من هو الذي يصعق

There's no malevolence, they're just pressing a button.

اي انه لا يحمل اي ضغينة .. انه مجرد يضغط على الصواعق

The first shock is recorded as very painful.

لقد كانت الصعقة الاولى مؤلمة جداً

The second shock feels less painful, because you get a bit used to it.

والثانية اخف إيلاماً .. لان الشخص اعتاد قليلاً على الفكرة

The third drops, the fourth, the fifth.

ومن ثم الثالثة اخف .. فالرابعة .. فالخامسة

The pain gets less.

على ذلك المدى كان الالم ينخفض

In the other condition,

في الحالة الثانية من التجربة

they're told that the person in the next room

اخبر الذين يتم صعقهم

is shocking them on purpose -- knows they're shocking them.

ان الشخص في الغرفة المجاورة يعلم شخصيتهم ويصعقهم عن عمد

The first shock hurts like hell.

فكانت الصعقة الاولى مؤلمة جداً

The second shock hurts just as much,

والثانية بنفس الحدة من الالم

and the third and the fourth and the fifth.

والثالثة والرابعة والخامسة اكثر إيلاماً

It hurts more

فالالم يزداد حدة

if you believe somebody is doing it to you on purpose.

عندما نعلم ان الشخص الآخر يتعمد إيذائنا

The most extreme example of this

ولكن المثال الاكثر تطرفاً

is that in some cases,

هو اننا في بعض الحالات

pain under the right circumstances

وضمن شروط معينة

can transform into pleasure.

نستطيع ان نحول الالم الى سعادة

Humans have this extraordinarily interesting property

فالبشر لديهم هذه الخاصية الاستثنائية

that will often seek out low-level doses of pain

التي تقوم عادة بتفنيد مستويات من الالم

in controlled circumstances

ضمن ظروف مضبوطة

and take pleasure from it --

واستنباط السعادة منها

as in the eating of hot chili peppers

مثل ما يحدث اثناء اكل الفلفل الحار

and roller coaster rides.

The point was nicely summarized

by the poet John Milton

من قبل الشاعر جون ميلتون

who wrote, "The mind is its own place,

and in itself can make a heaven of hell,

وهو يصنع بنفسه من الجنة جحيماً ..
