In many patriarchal societies and tribal societies,

fathers are usually known by their sons,

but I'm one of the few fathers

who is known by his daughter,

Malala started her campaign for education

ਮਲਾਲਾ ਨੇ 2007 ਵਿੱਚ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਲਈ ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੀ

and stood for her rights in 2007,

ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਖੜ੍ਹੀ ਹੋਈ

and when her efforts were honored in 2011,

Before that, she was my daughter,

ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਉਹ ਮੇਰੀ ਧੀ ਸੀ

but now I am her father.

ਪਰ ਹੁਣ ਮੈਂ ਉਸਦਾ ਪਿਤਾ ਹਾਂ।

Ladies and gentlemen,

ਭੈਣੋ ਤੇ ਭਰਾਵੋ,

if we glance to human history,

ਜੇਕਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਉੱਪਰ ਝਾਤੀ ਮਾਰੀਏ

the story of women

ਤਾਂ ਔਰਤ ਦੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ

is the story of injustice,

ਅਨਿਆਂ,

inequality,

ਨਾਬਰਾਬਰੀ,

violence and exploitation.

ਹਿੰਸਾ ਤੇ ਸ਼ੋਸ਼ਣ ਦੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਹੈ।

You see,

ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਦੇਖਦੇ ਹੋ

ਮਰਦ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਸਮਾਜਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ

in patriarchal societies,

right from the very beginning,

ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ

when a girl is born,

ਜਦ ਇੱਕ ਕੁੜੀ ਜਨਮ ਲੈਂਦੀ ਹੈ

her birth is not celebrated.

ਉਸਦਾ ਜਸ਼ਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਮਨਾਇਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ।

She is not welcomed,

ਉਸਦਾ ਸਵਾਗਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ

ਨਾਂ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਦੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਨਾ ਹੀ ਮਾਂ ਦੇ ਦੁਆਰਾ।

neither by father nor by mother.

The neighborhood comes

ਗੁਆਂਢੀ ਆਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ

and commiserates with the mother,

ਅਤੇ ਮਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਹਮਦਰਦੀ ਜਤਾਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ

ਅਤੇ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਪਿਤਾ ਨੂੰ ਵਧਾਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਦਿੰਦਾ।

and nobody congratulates the father.

ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਮਾਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਾਯੂਸ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ

And a mother is very uncomfortable

for having a girl child.

ਇੱਕ ਧੀ ਨੂੰ ਜੰਮ ਕੇ।

When she gives birth to the first girl child,

ਜਦ ਉਹ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਇੱਕ ਧੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ

ਉਹ ਦੁਖੀ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

first daughter, she is sad.

When she gives birth to the second daughter,

ਜਦ ਉਹ ਦੂਜੀ ਧੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,

she is shocked,

ਉਹ ਡਰ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,

and in the expectation of a son,

ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਦੀ ਆਸ ਵਿੱਚ,

ਜਦ ਉਹ ਤੀਜੀ ਧੀ ਨੂੰ ਜਨਮ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ,

when she gives birth to a third daughter,

she feels guilty like a criminal.

ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ।

Not only the mother suffers,

ਨਾ ਸਿਰਫ ਮਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਭੁਗਤਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ,

but the daughter, the newly born daughter,

ਸਗੋਂ ਉਸ ਧੀ, ਉਹ ਨਵ-ਜੰਮੀ ਬੱਚੀ

when she grows old,

ਜਦ ਵੱਡੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ,

she suffers too.

ਉਹ ਤਦ ਵੀ ਸਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ।

At the age of five,

ਪੰਜ ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ,

while she should be going to school,

ਜਦ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਸਕੂਲ ਜਾਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ,

she stays at home

ਉਹ ਘਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ

and her brothers are admitted in a school.

ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੇ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਾਖਿਲਾ ਕਰਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

Until the age of 12, somehow,

12 ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਤੱਕ, ਕਿਸੇ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ,

she has a good life.

ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਚੰਗਾ ਜੀਵਨ ਬਿਤਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ।

She can have fun.

ਉਹ ਮਸਤੀ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

She can play with her friends in the streets,

ਉਹ ਸਹੇਲੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਗਲੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਖੇਡ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ

and she can move around in the streets

ਤੇ ਗਲੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਉੱਡ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ

like a butterfly.

ਤਿੱਤਲੀ ਵਾਂਗ।

But when she enters her teens,

ਪਰ ਜਦ ਉਹ ਕਿਸ਼ੋਰ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਵਿਚ ਦਾਖਲ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ

ਜਦ ਉਹ 13 ਸਾਲਾਂ ਦੀ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ

when she becomes 13 years old,

she is forbidden to go out of her home

ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਘਰ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਿਕਲਣ ਤੋਂ ਮਨਾਂ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

without a male escort.

ਕਿਸੇ ਮਰਦ ਦੇ ਸਾਥ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ

She is confined under the four walls of her home.

ਉਸਨੂੰ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਚਾਰਦੀਵਾਰੀ ਤੱਕ ਸੀਮਤ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

She is no more a free individual.

ਉਹ ਹੁਣ ਇੱਕ ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਵਿਅਕਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦੀ।

ਉਹ "ਅਣਖ" ਦਾ ਇਕ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ

She becomes the so-called honor

ਆਪਣੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਤੇ ਭਰਾਵਾਂ

of her father and of her brothers

and of her family,

ਤੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਲਈ

and if she transgresses

ਤੇ ਜੇਕਰ ਉਹ ਉਲੰਘਣਾ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ

the code of that so-called honor,

ਇਸ ਅਣਖ ਦੀ

she could even be killed.

ਤਾਂ ਉਸਦੀ ਹੱਤਿਆ ਵੀ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ।

And it is also interesting that this so-called

ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਦਿਲਚਸਪ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਇਹ

code of honor,

"ਅਣਖ"

it does not only affect the life of a girl,

ਨਾ ਸਿਰਫ ਉਸ ਕੁੜੀ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਉੱਪਰ ਅਸਰ ਪਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ

it also affects the life

ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਕਰਦੀ ਹੈ

of the male members of the family.

ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਮਰਦਾਂ ਦੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ।

I know a family of seven sisters and one brother,

ਮੈਂ 7 ਭੈਣਾਂ ਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਭਰਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਹਾਂ

and that one brother,

ਤੇ ਉਹ ਇੱਕ ਭਰਾ

he has migrated to the Gulf countries,

ਉਹ ਖਾੜੀ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਜਾ ਬਸ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ

ਉਹਨਾਂ 7 ਭੈਣਾਂ ਲਈ ਰੋਜ਼ੀ-ਰੋਟੀ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਲਈ

to earn a living for his seven sisters

and parents,

ਤੇ ਮਾਂ-ਬਾਪ ਲਈ

because he thinks that it will be humiliating

ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਇੰਝ ਸੋਚਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸਦੀ ਬੜੀ ਬੇਇਜ਼ਤੀ ਹੋਵੇਗੀ

ਜੇਕਰ ਉਸਦੀਆਂ ਭੈਣਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਕੰਮ ਸਿੱਖ

if his seven sisters learn a skill

and they go out of the home

ਘਰੋਂ ਬਾਹਰ ਨਿਕਲ

ਖੁਦ ਆਪਣੀ ਰੋਜ਼ੀ-ਰੋਟੀ ਕਮਾਉਣ ਲੱਗ ਜਾਣ।

and earn some livelihood.

So this brother,

ਇਸਲਈ ਇਹ ਭਰਾ

he sacrifices the joys of his life

ਆਪਣੇ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੇ ਸੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਬਲੀ ਦੇ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

and the happiness of his sisters

ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਭੈਣਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਖੁਸ਼ੀਆਂ ਲਈ

at the altar of so-called honor.

ਆਪਣੀ "ਅਣਖ" ਲਈ।

And there is one more norm

ਅਤੇ ਇੱਕ ਹੋਰ ਆਦਰਸ਼ ਹੈ

of the patriarchal societies

ਮਰਦ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਸਮਾਜਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ

ਜਿਸਨੂੰ ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰਿਤਾ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ।

that is called obedience.

A good girl is supposed to be

ਇਕ ਚੰਗੀ ਕੁੜੀ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਮੰਨਿਆ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ

very quiet, very humble

ਜੋ ਬਹੁਤ ਸ਼ਾਂਤ, ਬਹੁਤ ਸੋਹਲ

and very submissive.

ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਨਰਮ ਸੁਭਾਅ ਦੀ ਹੋਵੇ।

It is the criteria.

ਇਹੀ ਪੈਮਾਨਾ ਹੈ।

The role model good girl should be very quiet.

ਇਕ ਆਦਰਸ਼ਕ ਕੁੜੀ ਨੂੰ ਖਾਮੋਸ਼ ਜਿਹੀ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।

She is supposed to be silent

ਉਸਨੂੰ ਚੁੱਪ ਕਿਸਮ ਦੀ ਹੋਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।

ਤੇ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਫੈਂਸਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੰਨ ਲੈਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ

and she is supposed to accept the decisions

of her father and mother

ਆਪਣੇ ਮਾਂ-ਬਾਪ ਅਤੇ

and the decisions of elders,

ਤੇ ਵੱਡਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ,

even if she does not like them.

ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਪਸੰਦ ਨਾ ਹੋਣ।

ਜੇਕਰ ਉਸਦਾ ਨਿਕਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਸ਼ਖਸ ਨਾਲ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਪਸੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ

If she is married to a man she doesn't like

or if she is married to an old man,

ਜਾਂ ਫਿਰ ਜੇਕਰ ਉਸਦਾ ਨਿਕਾਹ ਕਿਸੇ ਬੁੱਢੇ ਆਦਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਵੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ

ਉਸਨੂੰ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਕਰਨਾ ਪਵੇਗਾ

she has to accept,

because she does not want to be dubbed

ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਉਹ ਨਹੀਂ ਚਾਹੁੰਦੀ

as disobedient.

ਉਸਨੂੰ ‘ਬਦਤਮੀਜ਼’ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਏ।

If she is married very early,

ਜੇਕਰ ਉਸਦਾ ਨਿਕਾਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਛੋਟੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ

she has to accept.

ਤਾਂ ਵੀ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਕਰਨਾ ਪਵੇਗਾ

Otherwise, she will be called disobedient.

ਨਹੀਂ ਤਾਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਬਦਤਮੀਜ਼ ਕਿਹਾ ਜਾਵੇਗਾ।

And what happens at the end?

ਅਤੇ ਅੰਤ ਵਿਚ ਕੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ?

In the words of a poetess,

ਜਿਵੇਂ ਕਿਸੇ ਕਵਿੱਤਰੀ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਹੈ

she is wedded, bedded,

ਉਸਦਾ ਵਿਆਹ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਫਿਰ ਸੰਭੋਗ

and then she gives birth to more sons and daughters.

ਤੇ ਫਿਰ ਉਹ ਜਨਮ ਦਿੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਹੋਰ ਧੀਆਂ ਤੇ ਪੁੱਤਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ।

And it is the irony of the situation

ਅਤੇ ਇਹੀ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਦੀ ਵਿਡੰਬਨਾ ਹੈ

that this mother,

ਤੇ ਇਹੀ ਮਾਂ

she teaches the same lesson of obedience

ਫਿਰ ਉਹੀ ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰਿਤਾ ਦਾ ਪਾਠ ਪੜਾਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ

to her daughter

ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਧੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ

and the same lesson of honor to her sons.

ਤੇ ਪੁੱਤਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਸੇ "ਅਣਖ" ਦਾ ਪਾਠ

ਤਾਂ ਇਹ ਚੱਕਰ ਚੱਲਦਾ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

And this vicious cycle goes on, goes on.

Ladies and gentlemen,

ਭੈਣੋ ਤੇ ਭਰਾਵੋ,

this plight of millions of women

ਲੱਖਾਂ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਇਸ ਦੁਰਦਸ਼ਾ ਨੂੰ

could be changed

ਬਦਲਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ

if we think differently,

ਜੇਕਰ ਅਸੀਂ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਸੋਚੀਏ

if women and men think differently,

ਜੇਕਰ ਔਰਤ ਤੇ ਮਰਦ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਸੋਚਣ

if men and women in the tribal and patriarchal societies

ਜੇਕਰ ਆਦਿਵਾਸੀ ਤੇ ਮਰਦ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਸਮਾਜਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਰਦ ਤੇ ਔਰਤ

ਵਿਕਾਸਸ਼ੀਲ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ

in the developing countries,

ਜੇਕਰ ਉਹ ਕੁਛ ਮਾਨਦੰਡਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਤੋੜ ਸਕਣ

if they can break a few norms

ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਤੇ ਸਮਾਜ ਵਿਚਲੇ

of family and society,

if they can abolish the discriminatory laws

ਜੇਕਰ ਉਹ ਵਿਤਕਰੇ ਵਾਲੇ ਪੈਮਾਨਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਖਤਮ ਕਰ ਦੇਣ

ਆਪਣੇ ਰਾਜਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ

of the systems in their states,

which go against the basic human rights

ਜੋ ਮੂਲ ਮਾਨਵੀ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਦੇ ਖਿਲਾਫ ਹਨ

of the women.

ਔਰਤਾਂ ਦੇ।

Dear brothers and sisters, when Malala was born,

ਪਿਆਰੇ ਭਰਾਵੋ ਤੇ ਭੈਣੋ, ਜਦ ਮਲਾਲਾ ਜੰਮੀ ਸੀ

and for the first time,

ਤੇ ਜਦ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ,

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਯਕੀਨ ਮੰਨਿਓ

believe me,

I don't like newborn children, to be honest,

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਨਵਜੰਮੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਪਸੰਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਨ, ਸੱਚਮੁਚ,

but when I went and I looked into her eyes,

ਪਰ ਜਦ ਮੈਂ ਗਿਆ ਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਉਸਦੀਆਂ ਅੱਖਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਦੇਖਿਆ,

ਯਕੀਨ ਮੰਨਿਓ

believe me,

I got extremely honored.

ਮੈਂ ਖੁਦ ਨੂੰ ਸਨਮਾਨਿਤ ਮਹਿਸੂਸ ਕੀਤਾ

And long before she was born,

ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੇ ਜੰਮਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਮਾਂ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ

I thought about her name,

ਮੈਂ ਉਸਦਾ ਨਾਂ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਸੀ

and I was fascinated with a heroic

ਅਤੇ ਮੈਂ ਬਹੁਤ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵਿਤ ਸੀ

legendary freedom fighter in Afghanistan.

ਅਫਗਾਨਿਸਤਾਨ ਦੀ ਇਕ ਮਹਾਨ ਸੁਤੰਤਰਤਾ ਸੈਨਾਨੀ ਤੋਂ।

Her name was Malalai of Maiwand,

and I named my daughter after her.

A few days after Malala was born,

my daughter was born,

my cousin came --

and it was a coincidence --

he came to my home

and he brought a family tree,

ਅਤੇ ਇਕ ਫੈਮਿਲੀ ਟ੍ਰੀ ਨਾਲ ਲਿਆਏ

a family tree of the Yousafzai family,

and when I looked at the family tree,

ਹਾਂ, ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਸਦਾ ਜ਼ਿਕਰ ਕਰਨਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।

It may be taken for granted in Canada,

ਇਹ ਭਲੇ ਹੀ ਕੋਈ ਵੱਡੀ ਗੱਲ ਨਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਕਨੈਡਾ ਵਿੱਚ

ਅਮਰੀਕਾ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਤੇ ਕਈ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਕਸਿਤ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿਚ

in America, in many developed countries,

but in poor countries,

ਪਰ ਗਰੀਬ ਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਵਿਚ,

in patriarchal societies, in tribal societies,

ਮਰਦ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਸਮਾਜਾਂ ਵਿਚ, ਆਦਿਵਾਸੀ ਸਮਾਜਾਂ ਵਿਚ

it's a big event for the life of girl.

ਇਹ ਇਕ ਕੁੜੀ ਦੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਵੱਡਾ ਦਿਨ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ।

Enrollment in a school means

ਇਕ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿਚ ਨਾਮ ਦਰਜ ਹੋਣ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ

ਉਸਦੀ ਪਹਿਚਾਣ ਤੇ ਉਸਦੇ ਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਨਤਾ ਮਿਲਣਾ।

recognition of her identity and her name.

Admission in a school means

ਇਕ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿਚ ਦਾਖਿਲੇ ਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਹੈ

that she has entered the world of dreams

ਕਿ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੇ ਸੁਪਨਿਆਂ

and aspirations

ਅਤੇ ਸੱਧਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦੁਨੀਆਂ ਵਿਚ ਦਾਖਿਲਾ ਲੈ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ

where she can explore her potentials

ਜਿੱਥੇ ਉਹ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਯੋਗਤਾਵਾਂ ਦਾ ਪਤਾ ਲਗਾ ਸਕਦੀ ਹੈ

for her future life.

ਆਪਣੇ ਭਵਿੱਖ ਦੇ ਲਈ।

I have five sisters,

and none of them could go to school,

and I was filling out the family part of the form,

I could not recall

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਯਾਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਆ ਰਹੇ

the surnames of some of my sisters.

ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਕੁਝ ਭੈਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਪੱਕੇ ਨਾਂ।

And the reason was

ਅਤੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਸੀ

that I have never, never seen the names

ਮੈਂ ਕਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਿਖੇ ਦੇਖੇ

of my sisters written on any document.

ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਭੈਣਾਂ ਦੇ, ਕਦੇ ਵੀ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਸਤਾਵੇਜ਼ ਉੱਪਰ।

That was the reason that

ਇਹੀ ਕਾਰਨ ਸੀ ਕਿ

I valued my daughter.

ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਧੀ ਨੂੰ ਤੱਵਜੋ ਦਿੱਤੀ।

What my father could not give to my sisters

ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਤਾ ਮੇਰੀਆਂ ਭੈਣਾਂ

and to his daughters,

ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਧੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੋ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇ ਸਕੇ

I thought I must change it.

ਮੈਂ ਸੋਚਿਆ ਕਿ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਬਦਲਣਾ ਚਾਹੀਦਾ ਹੈ।

I used to appreciate the intelligence

and the brilliance of my daughter.

I encouraged her to sit with me

ਮੈਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਹੱਲਾਸ਼ੇਰੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਬੈਠੇ

when my friends used to come.

ਜਦ ਮੇਰੇ ਦੋਸਤ ਘਰ ਆਉਣ।

I encouraged her to go with me to different meetings.

ਮੈਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਹੱਲਾਸ਼ੇਰੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਕਿ ਉਹ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਬੈਠਕਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਉਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਨਾਲ ਚੱਲੇ।

And all these good values,

ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ

I tried to inculcate in her personality.

ਮੈਂ ਉਸਦੀ ਸ਼ਖਸੀਅਤ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕੀਤੀ।

ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਸਿਰਫ ਮਲਾਲਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਹੁੰਦਾ

And this was not only she, only Malala.

I imparted all these good values

ਮੈਂ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਸੰਸਕਾਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਹਨ

to my school, girl students and boy students as well.

ਆਪਣੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਵਿਚ, ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ।

ਮੈਂ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਨੂੰ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਲਈ ਵਰਤਿਆ।

I used education for emancipation.

I taught my girls,

ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਬੱਚੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਖਾਇਆ,

I taught my girl students,

ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀਆਂ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥਣਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਖਾਇਆ

to unlearn the lesson of obedience.

ਕਿ ਉਹ ਆਗਿਆਕਾਰਿਤਾ ਦਾ ਸਬਕ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਣ।

I taught my boy students

ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਖਾਇਆ

to unlearn the lesson of so-called pseudo-honor.

ਉਹ ਝੂਠੀ ਅਣਖ ਦਾ ਸਬਕ ਭੁੱਲ ਜਾਣ।

Dear brothers and sisters,

ਪਿਆਰੇ ਭੈਣ ਤੇ ਭਰਾਵੋ

we were striving for more rights for women,

ਅਸੀਂ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਦਿਆਂ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਸੀ

and we were struggling to have more,

ਅਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਸੀ

more and more space for the women in society.

ਤਾਂ ਕਿ ਕਿ ਸਮਾਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਧ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਧ ਸਥਾਨ ਮਿਲ ਸਕੇ।

ਪਰ ਸਾਡੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਇਕ ਨਵੀਂ ਸਮੱਸਿਆ ਆਣ ਪਈ।

But we came across a new phenomenon.

It was lethal to human rights

ਇਹ ਮਨੁੱਖੀ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਜਾਨਲੇਵਾ ਸੀ

and particularly to women's rights.

ਅਤੇ ਖਾਸ ਤੌਰ ਉੱਤੇ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਦੇ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਲਈ।

It was called Talibanization.

ਇਹ ਸੀ ਤਾਲਿਬਾਨ।

It means a complete negation

ਇਸਦਾ ਮਤਲਬ ਸੀ ਪੂਰੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਰੋਕ

of women's participation

ਔਰਤਾਂ ਦੀ ਭਾਗੀਦਾਰੀ ਉੱਪਰ

in all political, economical and social activities.

ਸਾਰੇ ਰਾਜਨੀਤਿਕ, ਆਰਥਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਾਜਿਕ ਗਤੀਵਿਧੀਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ।

ਸੈਂਕੜੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਤਬਾਹ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤੇ ਗਏ।

Hundreds of schools were lost.

Girls were prohibited from going to school.

ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਕੂਲ ਜਾਣ ਉੱਪਰ ਰੋਕ ਲਗਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ।

Women were forced to wear veils

ਔਰਤਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਬੁਰਕਾ ਪਹਿਨਣ ਲਈ ਮਜਬੂਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ

and they were stopped from going to the markets.

ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਬਾਜ਼ਾਰ ਜਾਣ ਉੱਪਰ ਵੀ ਰੋਕ ਲਗਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ।

ਸੰਗੀਤਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਚੁੱਪ ਕਰਵਾ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ,

Musicians were silenced,

girls were flogged

ਕੁੜੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਕੋੜੇ ਮਾਰੇ ਗਏ

and singers were killed.

ਅਤੇ ਗਾਇਕਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਗਿਆ।

ਲੱਖਾਂ ਪੀੜਤ ਸਨ,

Millions were suffering,

but few spoke,

ਪਰ ਕੁਝ ਕੁ ਨੇ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਉਠਾਈ,

and it was the most scary thing

ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਡਰਾਉਣੀ ਗੱਲ ਸੀ

when you have all around such people

ਜਦ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਨੇੜੇ ਤੇੜੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਐਸੇ ਲੋਕ ਹੋਣ

who kill and who flog,

ਜੋ ਹੱਤਿਆ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਣ ਅਤੇ ਕੋੜੇ ਲਗਾਉਂਦੇ ਹੋਣ

and you speak for your rights.

ਤੇ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਕਾਂ ਲਈ ਬੋਲੋ

It's really the most scary thing.

ਇਹੀ ਅਸਲ ਵਿਚ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਡਰਾਉਣੀ ਗੱਲ ਹੈ।

10 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿਚ,

At the age of 10,

Malala stood, and she stood for the right

ਮਲਾਲਾ ਖੜੀ ਹੋਈ

of education.

ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਲਈ।

She wrote a diary for the BBC blog,

ਉਹਨੇ ਬੀਬੀਸੀ ਬਲੌਗ ਲਈ ਇਕ ਡਾਇਰੀ ਲਿਖੀ

she volunteered herself

ਉਹਨੇ ਖੁਦ ਨੂੰ ਨਾਮਜ਼ਦ ਕੀਤਾ

for the New York Times documentaries,

ਨਿਊਯੌਰਕ ਟਾਈਮਸ ਵਿਚ ਵਲੰਟੀਅਰ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ

ਅਤੇ ਉਸਨੇ ਹਰ ਸੰਭਵ ਮੰਚ ਨਾਲ ਗੱਲ ਕੀਤੀ।

and she spoke from every platform she could.

And her voice was the most powerful voice.

ਅਤੇ ਉਸਦੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਬੁਲੰਦ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਸੀ।

It spread like a crescendo all around the world.

ਉਹ ਰੌਸ਼ਨੀ ਵਾਂਗ ਸਾਰੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਿਚ ਫੈਲ ਗਈ।

And that was the reason the Taliban

ਅਤੇ ਇਹੀ ਕਾਰਨ ਸੀ ਕਿ ਤਾਲਿਬਾਨ

could not tolerate her campaign,

ਉਸਦੀ ਮੁਹਿੰਮ ਨੂੰ ਬਰਦਾਸ਼ਤ ਨਾ ਕਰ ਸਕਿਆ,

and on October 9 2012,

ਅਤੇ 9 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ 2012 ਨੂੰ

she was shot in the head at point blank range.

ਉਸਨੂੰ ਬਿੰਦ ਦੇ ਫਰਕ ਤੋਂ ਸਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਗੋਲੀ ਮਾਰ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਗਈ।

It was a doomsday for my family and for me.

ਇਹ ਮੇਰੇ ਅਤੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਲਈ ਕਿਆਮਤ ਦਾ ਦਿਨ ਸੀ।

The world turned into a big black hole.

ਦੁਨੀਆ ਇਕ ਵੱਡੇ ਬਲੈਕ ਹੋਲ ਵਰਗੀ ਜਾਪਣ ਲੱਗੀ।

While my daughter was

ਜਦ ਮੇਰੀ ਧੀ

ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਅਤੇ ਮੌਤ ਨਾਲ ਜੂਝ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ

on the verge of life and death,

I whispered into the ears of my wife,

ਤਾਂ ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਘਰਵਾਲੀ ਨੂੰ ਪੁੱਛਿਆ

"Should I be blamed for what happened

“ਕੀ ਉਸ ਸਭ ਦਾ ਮੈਂ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਹਾਂ

to my daughter and your daughter?"

ਜੋ ਸਾਡੀ ਧੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਇਆ?”

ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਸਹਿਜਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਕਿਹਾ

And she abruptly told me,

"Please don't blame yourself.

“ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰਕੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਦੋਸ਼ੀ ਨਾ ਮੰਨੋ।

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਸਹੀ ਕੰਮ ਲਈ ਖੜੇ ਹੋਏ।

You stood for the right cause.

You put your life at stake

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀ ਦਾਅ ਉੱਤੇ ਲਗਾ ਦਿੱਤੀ

for the cause of truth,

ਸੱਚਾਈ ਲਈ,

for the cause of peace,

ਸ਼ਾਂਤੀ ਲਈ

ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਲਈ,

and for the cause of education,

and your daughter in inspired from you

ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਧੀ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਤੋਂ ਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੇਰਿਤ ਹੋਈ

and she joined you.

ਅਤੇ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਨਾਲ ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹੋ ਗਈ।

You both were on the right path

ਤੁਸੀਂ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਸਹੀ ਰਾਸਤੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਚੱਲ ਰਹੇ ਸੀ

ਅਤੇ ਰੱਬ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਬਚਾਵੇਗਾ।”

and God will protect her."

These few words meant a lot to me,

ਇਹ ਕੁਝ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਮੇਰੇ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਮਾਅਨੇ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਹਨ

and I didn't ask this question again.

When Malala was in the hospital,

because her facial nerve was cut down,

ਮੈਨੂੰ ਹਨੇਰੇ ਭਰੇ ਪਰਛਾਵੇਂ ਦਿਖਦੇ ਸਨ

I used to see a dark shadow

spreading on the face of my wife.

ਆਪਣੀ ਘਰਵਾਲੀ ਦੇ ਚਿਹਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ।

ਪਰ ਮੇਰੀ ਬੇਟੀ ਨੇ ਕਦੇ ਸ਼ਿਕਾਇਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੀ।

But my daughter never complained.

She used to tell us,

"I'm fine with my crooked smile

“ਮੈਂ ਆਪਣੀ ਟੇਢੀ ਮੁਸਕਾਨ ਨਾਲ ਠੀਕ ਹਾਂ

and with my numbness in my face.

ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੇ ਚਿਹਰੇ ਦੀ ਅਕੜ ਨਾਲ।

I'll be okay. Please don't worry."

ਮੈਂ ਠੀਕ ਹੋ ਜਾਵਾਂਗੀ। ਬਸ, ਤੁਸੀਂ ਫਿਕਰ ਨਾ ਕਰੋ।”

ਉਹ ਸਾਡਾ ਸਬਰ ਸੀ

She was a solace for us,

and she consoled us.

ਤੇ ਉਹੀ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਹੌਂਸਲਾ ਦੇ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ।

we learned from her how to be resilient

ਅਸੀਂ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਮਜਬੂਤ ਬਣਿਆ ਜਾਏ

in the most difficult times,

ਸਭ ਤੋਂ ਔਖੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਵਿਚ ਵੀ

and I'm glad to share with you

ਅਤੇ ਮੈਨੂੰ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਦੱਸਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਹੋ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ

that despite being an icon

ਐਸਾ ਸਾਹਸੀ, ਐਸਾ ਬੁਲਾਰਾ ਅਤੇ ਐਸਾ ਸੰਤੁਲਿਤ ਬਣਾਇਆ ?
