In many patriarchal societies and tribal societies,

and I am proud of it.

Malala started her campaign for education

マララが教育のための キャンペーンを始めて

and stood for her rights in 2007,

女性の権利を求めて立ち上がったのは 2007年のことでした

and when her efforts were honored in 2011,

彼女の努力が認められたのは 2011年のことです

and she was given the national youth peace prize,

パキスタン政府から 「国民平和賞」を授与されると

and she became a very famous,

一躍有名になりました

very popular young girl of her country.

パキスタンを代表する 有名な女の子になったのです

Before that, she was my daughter,

それまでマララは 「ジアウディンの娘」でしたが

but now I am her father.

今では私が 「マララの父親」と呼ばれます

Ladies and gentlemen,

ご来場の皆さま

if we glance to human history,

人類の歴史を振り返ってまいりますと

the story of women

女性の歴史とは

is the story of injustice,

不公正の物語であり

inequality,

不平等

violence and exploitation.

暴力､搾取がつきものでした

You see,

ご存知のとおり

in patriarchal societies,

家父長社会は

right from the very beginning,

子どもが産声を上げた時から 始まります

when a girl is born,

女の子が生まれると

her birth is not celebrated.

その誕生は祝福されません

She is not welcomed,

誰からも歓迎されず

neither by father nor by mother.

実の両親にすら 喜ばれません

The neighborhood comes

近所の人たちが訪れては

and commiserates with the mother,

母親をなぐさめます

and nobody congratulates the father.

父親に「おめでとう」と 言う人はいません

And a mother is very uncomfortable

女の子を産んだことで 母親は―

for having a girl child.

とても肩身の狭い思いをします

When she gives birth to the first girl child,

初めての子供が 女の子だった時

first daughter, she is sad.

母親は悲しみにくれ

When she gives birth to the second daughter,

２人目の子供が女の子だと

she is shocked,

母親はショックを受けます

and in the expectation of a son,

今度こそ息子でありますようにと 願いながら

when she gives birth to a third daughter,

３人目の子供も女の子だと

she feels guilty like a criminal.

犯罪者のごとく 罪悪感にかられます

Not only the mother suffers,

この苦しみは 母親だけのものではありません

but the daughter, the newly born daughter,

娘に受け継がれます 生まれた女の子が

when she grows old,

大きくなると

she suffers too.

また苦しみをうけるのです

At the age of five,

彼女が５歳になると

while she should be going to school,

就学すべき年齢なのに

she stays at home

家にいなければいけません

and her brothers are admitted in a school.

彼女の兄弟達は 学校に行けるのにです

Until the age of 12, somehow,

彼女が12歳になるまでは

she has a good life.

どうにか良い生活を送ります

She can have fun.

楽しいことができます

She can play with her friends in the streets,

道端で友達と一緒に遊んだり

and she can move around in the streets

一人で外を歩いたりできるのです

like a butterfly.

蝶々みたいに自由です

But when she enters her teens,

ところが十代になると

when she becomes 13 years old,

―13歳になると

she is forbidden to go out of her home

女性は男性のつきそいなしに

without a male escort.

出かけることを禁じられます

She is confined under the four walls of her home.

家の中に閉じ込められるのです

She is no more a free individual.

もはや自由を謳歌できる 一個人ではなくなります

She becomes the so-called honor

女性は父親や兄弟

of her father and of her brothers

そして家族にとっての

and of her family,

いわゆる「名誉」になるのです

and if she transgresses

ですから女性が

the code of that so-called honor,

この「名誉」を傷つけると

she could even be killed.

殺されることすらあります

And it is also interesting that this so-called

面白いことに この「名誉」と呼ばれるものが

code of honor,

女の子の人生に

it does not only affect the life of a girl,

影響を及ぼすだけでなく

it also affects the life

家族の男性陣の人生にまで

of the male members of the family.

影響を与えるのです

I know a family of seven sisters and one brother,

７人の娘たちと１人の息子から成る 家族がいまして

and that one brother,

この１人の息子は

he has migrated to the Gulf countries,

湾岸諸国に出稼ぎに出ています

to earn a living for his seven sisters

７人の姉妹と両親を

and parents,

食べさせるためです

because he thinks that it will be humiliating

なぜかというと ７人の姉妹が

if his seven sisters learn a skill

スキルを磨いて

and they go out of the home

家を出て生活費を得ることが

and earn some livelihood.

恥だと考えているからです

So this brother,

ですから彼は

he sacrifices the joys of his life

「名誉」と呼ばれるもののために

and the happiness of his sisters

自身の生きる喜びや

at the altar of so-called honor.

姉妹の幸せを犠牲にしているのです

And there is one more norm

家父長社会にある

of the patriarchal societies

もう一つの規範が

that is called obedience.

「服従」と呼ばれるものです

A good girl is supposed to be

良い女の子として 求められるのは

very quiet, very humble

とても物静かで慎ましく

and very submissive.

とても従順なことです

It is the criteria.

これが良い条件です

The role model good girl should be very quiet.

良い女の子とは おとなしくなければいけません

She is supposed to be silent

彼女達に求められるのは

and she is supposed to accept the decisions

父親や母親､年長者による決定を

of her father and mother

黙って

and the decisions of elders,

受け入れることです

even if she does not like them.

たとえ本人が嫌だったとしてもです

If she is married to a man she doesn't like

ですから自分が気に入らない男性や

or if she is married to an old man,

年の離れた男性との結婚でも

she has to accept,

受け入れざるをえないのです

because she does not want to be dubbed

従順さに欠けると

as disobedient.

受け取られたくないからです

If she is married very early,

まだ幼くして結婚させられても

she has to accept.

受け入れなくてはいけません

Otherwise, she will be called disobedient.

さもないと従順ではないという 烙印を押されるからです

And what happens at the end?

すると どうなると思いますか？

In the words of a poetess,

ある女流詩人の言葉を借りるなら

she is wedded, bedded,

「結婚を強いられ 夫婦関係を強いられ

and then she gives birth to more sons and daughters.

次から次へと 息子や娘を産んだ」と

And it is the irony of the situation

この状況で皮肉なのは

that this mother,

この母親が

she teaches the same lesson of obedience

同じ「服従」の大切さを

to her daughter

娘に説いて

and the same lesson of honor to her sons.

同じ「名誉」の重要さを 息子に教えるのです

And this vicious cycle goes on, goes on.

こうやって悪しきサイクルが 果てしなく続いていくのです

Ladies and gentlemen,

ご来場の皆さま

this plight of millions of women

何百万人の女性の このような窮状を

could be changed

変えるためには

if we think differently,

違う考え方を持つことです

if women and men think differently,

男性と女性が これまでの考え方を変えること

if men and women in the tribal and patriarchal societies

開発途上国の 部族社会や家父長社会にいる

in the developing countries,

男性と女性が

if they can break a few norms

家族や社会にある いくつかの規範を

of family and society,

断ち切ることです

if they can abolish the discriminatory laws

国内にはびこる 女性の基本的人権に反する

of the systems in their states,

社会の体制を作る

which go against the basic human rights

差別的な規範を

of the women.

廃止することです

Dear brothers and sisters, when Malala was born,

親愛なる兄弟姉妹の皆さま マララが生まれた日のことです

and for the first time,

初めて溢れてきた思いは

believe me,

―実のところ

I don't like newborn children, to be honest,

生まれたての子どもは 苦手な私でしたが―

but when I went and I looked into her eyes,

生まれたばかりの マララの目を見ると

believe me,

心から

I got extremely honored.

とても誇らしい気持ちになりました

And long before she was born,

彼女が生まれる ずっと前から

I thought about her name,

名前は決めていました

and I was fascinated with a heroic

私はアフガニスタンで 自由のために戦った

legendary freedom fighter in Afghanistan.

伝説のヒロインに魅せられていました

Her name was Malalai of Maiwand,

彼女はマイワンドのマラライと呼ばれました

and I named my daughter after her.

娘の名前は 彼女にちなんだものです

A few days after Malala was born,

マララが生まれて

my daughter was born,

数日後のことです

my cousin came --

私のいとこが

and it was a coincidence --

我が家にやって来て

he came to my home

偶然にも

and he brought a family tree,

家系図を持ってきたのです

a family tree of the Yousafzai family,

ユスフザイ家の家系図で

and when I looked at the family tree,

それを見ると

it traced back to 300 years of our ancestors.

300年前の祖先まで さかのぼるものでした

But when I looked, all were men,

でも そこに書かれているのは 男の名前だけで

and I picked my pen,

ペンを手にした私は

drew a line from my name,

私の名前から線を引いて

and wrote, "Malala."

「マララ」と書きました

And when she grow old,

彼女が成長し

when she was four and a half years old,

４歳半になると

I admitted her in my school.

私が経営する学校への 入学を認めました

You will be asking, then, why should I mention about

皆さんは私が 女児の入学許可について

the admission of a girl in a school?

あえて申し上げるのを 不思議に思われるでしょうか

Yes, I must mention it.

そう 話さなければいけないんです

It may be taken for granted in Canada,

カナダやアメリカ

in America, in many developed countries,

その他の多くの先進国では 当たり前のことかもしれませんが

but in poor countries,

貧しい国々や

in patriarchal societies, in tribal societies,

家父長社会､部族社会では

it's a big event for the life of girl.

就学とは女の子にとって 一大事です

Enrollment in a school means

学校に通えるということは

recognition of her identity and her name.

自分のアイデンティティや名前を 認めてもらえること

Admission in a school means

学校に通えるということは

that she has entered the world of dreams

将来のために 自分の可能性を

and aspirations

探せる

where she can explore her potentials

夢や希望をかなえる場所に

for her future life.

足を踏み入れることです

I have five sisters,

私には５人の姉妹がおりますが

and none of them could go to school,

誰一人として 学校に通えませんでした

and you will be astonished,

皆さん驚かれるでしょうが

two weeks before,

２週間前のことです

when I was filling out the Canadian visa form,

カナダビザの申請書を 作成していたんですが

and I was filling out the family part of the form,

自分の家族について 記載する箇所があり

I could not recall

姉妹の内 何人かの

the surnames of some of my sisters.

名字を思い出せませんでした

And the reason was

といいますのも

that I have never, never seen the names

私の姉妹の氏名が書かれた書類を

of my sisters written on any document.

一度たりとも見たことがなかったのです

That was the reason that

こういったことから

I valued my daughter.

私は娘を大切にしました

What my father could not give to my sisters

父が私の姉妹 つまり父の娘達に

and to his daughters,

与えられなかったもの

I thought I must change it.

これを変えなければと思いました

I used to appreciate the intelligence

私は娘の知性と聡明さを

and the brilliance of my daughter.

大事にしてきました

I encouraged her to sit with me

私の友人が来ると

when my friends used to come.

娘をそばに座らせ

I encouraged her to go with me to different meetings.

様々な会合に 一緒に連れて行きました

And all these good values,

これら全ての良い価値観が

I tried to inculcate in her personality.

彼女自身に根付けばと願いました

And this was not only she, only Malala.

これはマララだけに 願ったことではありません

I imparted all these good values

こうした良い価値観全てを

to my school, girl students and boy students as well.

男女分け隔てなく 私の学校の全生徒に教えました

I used education for emancipation.

教育を通して 子ども達を解き放ちました

I taught my girls,

私が女の子達

I taught my girl students,

女子生徒に教えたのは

to unlearn the lesson of obedience.

服従の教えを学ばないこと

I taught my boy students

男子生徒に教えたのは

to unlearn the lesson of so-called pseudo-honor.

偽りの名誉の教えを 学ばないことです

Dear brothers and sisters,

親愛なる兄弟姉妹の皆さん

we were striving for more rights for women,

私達は女性の権利のために 戦ってきました

and we were struggling to have more,

そして社会に もっともっと沢山の

more and more space for the women in society.

女性の居場所を作るため 努力してきました

But we came across a new phenomenon.

ところが新しい障壁が 立ちはだかりました

It was lethal to human rights

人権を脅かし

and particularly to women's rights.

特に女性の権利を危険にさらしている

It was called Talibanization.

タリバン化と呼ばれたものです

It means a complete negation

タリバン支配下では

of women's participation

全ての政治､経済

in all political, economical and social activities.

社会活動において 女性の参画が完全に否定されます

Hundreds of schools were lost.

数百にのぼる学校が破壊されました

Girls were prohibited from going to school.

女の子は学校に通うことを 禁じられます

Women were forced to wear veils

女性はベールをかぶるよう強要され

and they were stopped from going to the markets.

市場に買い物に行くことすら 禁じられました

Musicians were silenced,

音楽は取り上げられ

girls were flogged

女の子が鞭で打たれ

and singers were killed.

歌手が殺されました

Millions were suffering,

何百万もの人々が苦しみましたが

but few spoke,

声をあげた人は ほとんどいませんでした

and it was the most scary thing

一番恐ろしかったのは

when you have all around such people

殺人や鞭打ちが横行している

who kill and who flog,

そんな中で 自分達の権利のために

and you speak for your rights.

声をあげることでしょう

It's really the most scary thing.

本当に本当に怖かったです

At the age of 10,

マララは10歳になると

Malala stood, and she stood for the right

教育を受ける権利のため

of education.

立ち上がりました

She wrote a diary for the BBC blog,

英BBC放送のブログに日記を投稿し

she volunteered herself

米ニューヨーク・タイムズの

for the New York Times documentaries,

短編ドキュメンタリー制作に協力し

and she spoke from every platform she could.

あらゆる場所で声をあげました

And her voice was the most powerful voice.

マララの声が一番パワフルでした

It spread like a crescendo all around the world.

その声は勢いを増しながら 世界中に広がり

And that was the reason the Taliban

これがタリバンが 彼女の活動を

could not tolerate her campaign,

容認できなくなった理由でした

and on October 9 2012,

2012年10月9日のことです

she was shot in the head at point blank range.

マララは至近距離で 額を撃たれました

It was a doomsday for my family and for me.

私と私の家族にとって まさに世界の終わりでした

The world turned into a big black hole.

世界が大きなブラックホールに 飲み込まれたのです

While my daughter was

私の娘が

on the verge of life and death,

生と死のはざまを さまよっている間

I whispered into the ears of my wife,

私は妻の耳元で つぶやきました

"Should I be blamed for what happened

「私達の娘に起こったことは

to my daughter and your daughter?"

私の責任だろうか？」

And she abruptly told me,

彼女はすぐに

"Please don't blame yourself.

「どうか自分を責めないで

You stood for the right cause.

あなたは正義のために立ち上がった

You put your life at stake

自分の命の危険をさらしてまで

for the cause of truth,

真実を求めて

for the cause of peace,

平和を求めて

and for the cause of education,

教育を求めた

and your daughter in inspired from you

そんなあなたに感化されて

and she joined you.

娘は後に続いたのよ

You both were on the right path

２人とも正しい道を歩んできたから

and God will protect her."

神様はきっとマララを守ってくださる」

These few words meant a lot to me,

この言葉に助けられて

and I didn't ask this question again.

自分を責めることは 二度とありませんでした

When Malala was in the hospital,

マララが病院で

and she was going through the severe pains

耐え難い苦痛を経験し

and she had had severe headaches

顔の神経損傷による

because her facial nerve was cut down,

重度の頭痛を抱えていた時

I used to see a dark shadow

妻の顔に

spreading on the face of my wife.

暗い影がさしたのを見かけたものです

But my daughter never complained.

そんな時でさえ 娘は不満をもらしませんでした

She used to tell us,

よく私達に言ってくれたのは

"I'm fine with my crooked smile

「笑えなくたって

and with my numbness in my face.

顔が麻痺していても大丈夫

I'll be okay. Please don't worry."

よくなるから どうか心配しないでね」

She was a solace for us,

彼女は私達をなぐさめ

and she consoled us.

癒してくれました

Dear brothers and sisters,

親愛なる兄弟姉妹の皆さん

we learned from her how to be resilient

私達がマララから学んだことは

in the most difficult times,

最も困難な時でさえ 立ち向かっていく力です

and I'm glad to share with you

皆さんに ぜひお伝えしたいのは

that despite being an icon

マララが 子供と女性の権利を取り戻す

for the rights of children and women,

希望の象徴であったとしても

she is like any 16-year old girl.

普通の16歳の女の子と 何ら変わりないことです

She cries when her homework is incomplete.

宿題が終わらない時は 泣きますし

She quarrels with her brothers,

弟達と喧嘩します

and I am very happy for that.

私には それがとても嬉しいんです

People ask me,

周りの人達から

what special is in my mentorship

マララみたいに強くて

which has made Malala so bold

勇敢で雄弁で

and so courageous and so vocal and poised?

落ちついた子供の 育て方の秘訣を聞かれます

I tell them, don't ask me what I did.

私の答えは 「私が何かしてあげたのではなく

Ask me what I did not do.

あることをしなかったお陰でしょう

I did not clip her wings, and that's all.

彼女の『翼』を切り取らなかった それだけです」
