In many patriarchal societies and tribal societies,

अनेक पितृसत्ताक समाज आणि जमातींमध्ये

fathers are usually known by their sons,

but I'm one of the few fathers

Malala started her campaign for education

and stood for her rights in 2007,

if we glance to human history,

is the story of injustice,

inequality,

violence and exploitation.

You see,

असं पहा,

in patriarchal societies,

पितृसत्ताक समाजामध्ये

right from the very beginning,

अगदी सुरुवातीच्या कालपासूनच,

when a girl is born,

मुलीचा जन्म

her birth is not celebrated.

साजरा केला जात नाही.

She is not welcomed,

तिचं स्वागत होत नाही.

neither by father nor by mother.

ना मातेकडून, ना पित्याकडून.

The neighborhood comes

शेजारपाजारचे लोक येऊन

and commiserates with the mother,

मातेजवळ सहानुभूती व्यक्त करतात.

and nobody congratulates the father.

कोणीही पित्याचं अभिनंदन करीत नाही.

And a mother is very uncomfortable

कन्या जन्मल्यामुळे

for having a girl child.

माताही अस्वस्थ असते.

When she gives birth to the first girl child,

पहिल्या कन्येला जन्म देताच

first daughter, she is sad.

माता दुःखी होते.

When she gives birth to the second daughter,

दुसऱ्या कन्येचा जन्म

she is shocked,

तिच्यावर आघात करतो.

and in the expectation of a son,

आणि पुत्रजन्माची आशा करताना,

when she gives birth to a third daughter,

जेव्हा तिसऱ्या कन्येचा जन्म होतो,

she feels guilty like a criminal.

तेव्हा मातेला एखाद्या गुन्हेगाराप्रमाणे अपराधी वाटतं

Not only the mother suffers,

हे मातेला तर सहन करावं लागतंच,

but the daughter, the newly born daughter,

पण त्या नवजात कन्येलाही,

when she grows old,

she suffers too.

At the age of five,

वयाच्या पाचव्या वर्षी,

while she should be going to school,

she stays at home

त्यावेळी ती घरीच राहते

and her brothers are admitted in a school.

आणि तिच्या भावांना शाळेत घातलं जातं.

Until the age of 12, somehow,

वयाला बारा वर्षं होईपर्यंत

she has a good life.

तिचं आयुष्य तसं सुखाचं जातं.

She can have fun.

तिला मौज करता येते.

She can play with her friends in the streets,

ती भर रस्त्यात तिच्या मैत्रिणींशी खेळू शकते.

and she can move around in the streets

रस्त्यांवरून चालू फिरू शकते.

like a butterfly.

जणु एखादं फुलपाखरुच.

But when she enters her teens,

पण तिने पौगंडावस्थेत प्रवेश करताच,

when she becomes 13 years old,

ती १३ वर्षांची होताच ,

she is forbidden to go out of her home

तिला एखाद्या पुरुषाच्या सोबतीशिवाय

without a male escort.

घराबाहेर पडायला बंदी केली जाते.

She is confined under the four walls of her home.

घराच्या चार भिंतींमध्ये ती बंदिस्त होते.

She is no more a free individual.

यानंतर एक स्वतंत्र व्यक्ती म्हणून तिचं अस्तित्व संपतं.

She becomes the so-called honor

आता ती फक्त तथाकथित अब्रू म्हणून जगते.

of her father and of her brothers

तिच्या पित्याची आणि भावांची.

and of her family,

आणि तिच्या घराण्याची.

and if she transgresses

आणि तिने जर मर्यादा ओलांडून

the code of that so-called honor,

त्या तथाकथित अब्रूचे नियम मोडले,

she could even be killed.

तर ती आपला जीवही गमावू शकते.

And it is also interesting that this so-called

आणि यातली लक्षवेधक बाब अशी,

code of honor,

की या तथाकथित अब्रूचा परिणाम

it does not only affect the life of a girl,

केवळ मुलीवरच नव्हे,

it also affects the life

तर घरातल्या

of the male members of the family.

पुरुषांवरही होतो.

I know a family of seven sisters and one brother,

सात बहिणी आणि एक भाऊ असलेल्या एका कुटुंबातला

and that one brother,

तो भाऊ

he has migrated to the Gulf countries,

देशांतर करून आखाती देशांत गेला आहे.

to earn a living for his seven sisters

आपल्या सात बहिणी आणि मातापित्यांचा

and parents,

चरितार्थ चालवण्यासाठी.

because he thinks that it will be humiliating

कारण, आपल्या सात बहिणींनी

if his seven sisters learn a skill

काही विद्या शिकून

and they go out of the home

घराबाहेर पडून कमाई करणं

and earn some livelihood.

हे त्याला अपमानास्पद वाटतं.

So this brother,

म्हणून त्या भावाने

he sacrifices the joys of his life

तथाकथित अब्रूच्या वेदीवर आपल्या सुखांचा

and the happiness of his sisters

आणि बहिणींच्या आनंदाचा

at the altar of so-called honor.

बळी दिला आहे.

And there is one more norm

पितृसत्ताक समाजांत आणखी एक गोष्ट

of the patriarchal societies

प्रमाण मानली जाते,

that is called obedience.

ती म्हणजे आज्ञाधारकता.

A good girl is supposed to be

गुणी मुलगी अगदी शांत,

very quiet, very humble

अतिशय नम्र आणि

and very submissive.

अत्यंत मवाळ असावी,

It is the criteria.

असे निकष असतात.

The role model good girl should be very quiet.

आदर्श गुणी मुलगी ही खूप शांत असते.

She is supposed to be silent

तिने गप्प बसायचं असतं.

and she is supposed to accept the decisions

आणि आपल्या मात्यापित्यांचे निर्णय

of her father and mother

स्वीकारायचे असतात.

and the decisions of elders,

आणि वयस्कर लोकांचे निर्णयही,

even if she does not like them.

तिला ते आवडले नाहीत तरीही.

If she is married to a man she doesn't like

तिला न आवडणाऱ्या पुरुषाशी किंवा एखाद्या म्हाताऱ्याशी

or if she is married to an old man,

तिचं लग्न लावलं गेलं,

she has to accept,

तरी तिला ते मान्य करावं लागतं.

because she does not want to be dubbed

कारण तिला, अवज्ञा करणारी,

as disobedient.

असं बिरूद नको असतं.

If she is married very early,

तिचं लग्न बालवयात लावलं गेलं,

she has to accept.

तरी तिला ते मान्य करावं लागतं.

Otherwise, she will be called disobedient.

नाहीतर तिला अवज्ञा करणारी म्हणतात.

And what happens at the end?

आणि शेवटी काय घडतं?

In the words of a poetess,

एका कवयित्रीच्या शब्दांत,

she is wedded, bedded,

तिचं लग्न होतं, मग संभोग, आणि मग ती

and then she gives birth to more sons and daughters.

आणखी मुलांना आणि मुलींना जन्म देते.

And it is the irony of the situation

आणि परिस्थितीतलं व्यंग पहा,

that this mother,

हीच माता आपल्या मुलींना

she teaches the same lesson of obedience

तोच आज्ञापालनाचा धडा देते.

to her daughter

आणि आपल्या मुलांना

and the same lesson of honor to her sons.

तोच अब्रूरक्षणाचा धडा देते.

And this vicious cycle goes on, goes on.

हे दुष्ट चक्र असंच चालत राहतं.

Ladies and gentlemen,

सभ्य स्त्रीपुरुषहो,

this plight of millions of women

लक्षावधी स्त्रियांची दुर्दशा

could be changed

आपल्याला थांबवता येईल.

if we think differently,

आपली विचारसरणी बदलली तर.

if women and men think differently,

स्त्रियांची आणि पुरुषांची विचारसरणी बदलली तर.

if men and women in the tribal and patriarchal societies

विकसनशील देशांमधल्या पितृसत्ताक

in the developing countries,

समाज आणि जमातींतल्या स्त्रीपुरुषांनी

if they can break a few norms

जर काही कौटुंबिक आणि सामजिक

of family and society,

मानदंड मोडले, तर.

if they can abolish the discriminatory laws

आपापल्या राज्यव्यवस्थेतले

of the systems in their states,

स्त्रियांच्या मूलभूत हक्कांवर गदा आणणारे

which go against the basic human rights

पक्षपाती कायदे

of the women.

जर ते रद्द करू शकले, तर.

Dear brothers and sisters, when Malala was born,

प्रिय बंधूभगिनींनो, मलाला जन्मली तेव्हा

and for the first time,

प्रथमच,

believe me,

विश्वास ठेवा,

I don't like newborn children, to be honest,

खरं तर मला नवजात अर्भकं आवडत नाहीत.

but when I went and I looked into her eyes,

पण जेव्हा मी जाऊन तिच्या डोळ्यांत पाहिलं,

believe me,

तेव्हा, विश्वास ठेवा,

I got extremely honored.

मला खूप सन्मानित झाल्यासारखं वाटलं.

And long before she was born,

I thought about her name,

and I was fascinated with a heroic

legendary freedom fighter in Afghanistan.

Her name was Malalai of Maiwand,

तिचं नाव होतं मैवंद ची मलालाई.

and I named my daughter after her.

तिच्यावरून मी माझ्या मुलीचं नाव ठेवलं.

A few days after Malala was born,

मलालाच्या, माझ्या मुलीच्या,

my daughter was born,

जन्मानंतर काही दिवसांनी,

my cousin came --

माझा एक भाऊ मला भेटायला आला.

and it was a coincidence --

हा एक योगायोगच म्हणायला हवा.

he came to my home

तो माझ्या घरी आला,

and he brought a family tree,

एक वंशावळी घेऊन.

a family tree of the Yousafzai family,

युसफ़झई घराण्याची वंशावळी.

and when I looked at the family tree,

आणि मी त्या वंशावळीकडे पाहिलं,

it traced back to 300 years of our ancestors.

तर ती ३०० वर्षं मागे जाऊन आमच्या पूर्वजांचा मागोवा घेत होती.

But when I looked, all were men,

पण मी पाहिलं, की ते सगळे पूर्वज पुरुष होते.

and I picked my pen,

मी माझी लेखणी उचलली,

drew a line from my name,

माझ्या नावापुढे एक ओळ काढली,

and wrote, "Malala."

आणि लिहिलं, "मलाला".

And when she grow old,

when she was four and a half years old,

I admitted her in my school.

You will be asking, then, why should I mention about

the admission of a girl in a school?

Yes, I must mention it.

हो, मला त्याचा उल्लेख केलाच पाहिजे.

It may be taken for granted in Canada,

कॅनडात ते गृहित धरलं जात असेल,

in America, in many developed countries,

अमेरिकेत आणि अनेक विकसित देशांतही.

but in poor countries,

पण गरीब देशांत,

in patriarchal societies, in tribal societies,

पितृसत्ताक समाज आणि जमातींमध्ये

it's a big event for the life of girl.

मुलीच्या आयुष्यातली ही मोठी घटना आहे.

Enrollment in a school means

शाळाप्रवेश म्हणजे,

recognition of her identity and her name.

तिच्या नावाची आणि व्यक्तित्वाची ओळख.

Admission in a school means

शाळाप्रवेश म्हणजे,

that she has entered the world of dreams

स्वप्नांच्या आणि आशांच्या दुनियेत

and aspirations

तिचा प्रवेश,

where she can explore her potentials

जिथे ती भावी आयुष्यासाठी

for her future life.

आपल्या सामर्थ्याचा शोध घेऊ शकेल.

I have five sisters,

मला पाच बहिणी आहेत.

and none of them could go to school,

त्यातल्या कुणालाच शाळेत जाता आलं नाही.

and you will be astonished,

तुम्हाला आश्चर्य वाटेल,

two weeks before,

दोन आठवड्यांपूर्वी मी जेव्हा

when I was filling out the Canadian visa form,

कॅनेडियन व्हिसाचा फॉर्म भरत होतो,

and I was filling out the family part of the form,

तेव्हा कौटुंबिक माहितीचा भाग भरताना,

I could not recall

माझ्या काही बहिणींची आडनावंच

the surnames of some of my sisters.

मला आठवेनात.

And the reason was

आणि याचं कारण म्हणजे,

that I have never, never seen the names

मी माझ्या बहिणींची नावं कधीच कोणत्याही कागदपत्रांवर

of my sisters written on any document.

लिहिलेली पाहिली नाहीत.

That was the reason that

याच कारणाने मी माझ्या मुलीला

I valued my daughter.

प्रतिष्ठेने वागवलं.

What my father could not give to my sisters

माझे वडील माझ्या बहिणींना, म्हणजे त्यांच्या मुलींना,

and to his daughters,

जे देऊ शकले नाहीत,

I thought I must change it.

ते मी बदललंच पाहिजे, असं मला वाटत होतं.

I used to appreciate the intelligence

मी माझ्या मुलीच्या बुद्धिमत्तेची

and the brilliance of my daughter.

आणि प्रतिभेची कदर केली.

I encouraged her to sit with me

माझे मित्र येत त्यावेळी मी तिला आमच्याबरोबर बसण्यास

when my friends used to come.

प्रोत्साहन देत असे.

I encouraged her to go with me to different meetings.

माझ्याबरोबर वेगवेगळ्या सभांना जाण्यास उत्तेजन देत असे.

And all these good values,

तिच्या व्यक्तिमत्वात

I tried to inculcate in her personality.

हे चांगले गुण भिनवण्याचा मी प्रयत्न केला.

And this was not only she, only Malala.

आणि फक्त मलालाच्या बाबतीतच नव्हे.

I imparted all these good values

माझ्या शाळेतल्या

to my school, girl students and boy students as well.

विद्यार्थिनी आणि विद्यार्थ्यांना मी हे गुण शिकवले.

I used education for emancipation.

शिक्षणाचा वापर मी उद्धारासाठी केला.

I taught my girls,

माझ्या मुलींना,

I taught my girl students,

माझ्या विद्यार्थिनींना,

to unlearn the lesson of obedience.

मी आज्ञापालनाचा धडा विसरायला शिकवलं.

I taught my boy students

माझ्या विद्यार्थ्यांना मी तथाकथित

to unlearn the lesson of so-called pseudo-honor.

दांभिक अब्रूचा धडा विसरायला शिकवलं.

Dear brothers and sisters,

प्रिय बंधुभगिनींनो,

we were striving for more rights for women,

आम्ही स्त्रियांना जास्त हक्क मिळावेत म्हणून झगडत होतो.

and we were struggling to have more,

आणि स्त्रियांना समाजात जास्तीत जास्त

more and more space for the women in society.

स्थान मिळावं म्हणून झगडत होतो.

But we came across a new phenomenon.

पण आम्हाला एक नवीनच प्रकार आढळून आला.

It was lethal to human rights

तो मानवी हक्कांसाठी प्राणघातक होता.

and particularly to women's rights.

खासकरून, स्त्रियांच्या हक्कांसाठी.

It was called Talibanization.

त्याचं नाव तालिबानीकरण.

It means a complete negation

म्हणजे स्त्रियांना सर्व

of women's participation

राजकीय, आर्थिक आणि सामाजिक घडामोडींमध्ये

in all political, economical and social activities.

भाग घेण्यापासून बंदी.

Hundreds of schools were lost.

शेकडो शाळा नष्ट झाल्या.

Girls were prohibited from going to school.

मुलींना शाळेत जायला बंदी केली गेली.

Women were forced to wear veils

स्त्रियांना बुरखा वापरण्याची सक्ती झाली.

and they were stopped from going to the markets.

त्यांचं बाजारहाट करणं बंद झालं.

Musicians were silenced,

संगीतकारांचं संगीत बंद करण्यात आलं.

girls were flogged

मुलींना फटके देण्यात आले

and singers were killed.

आणि गायकांना ठार मारण्यात आलं.

Millions were suffering,

लक्षावधी लोक हे सहन करीत होते.

but few spoke,

पण फार थोड्या लोकांनी याविरुद्ध आवाज उठवला.

and it was the most scary thing

जेव्हा सभोवती फटके देणारे आणि

when you have all around such people

ठार मारणारे लोक असतात,

who kill and who flog,

तेव्हा त्याविरुद्ध आवाज उठवणं

and you speak for your rights.

It's really the most scary thing.

At the age of 10,

वयाच्या दहाव्या वर्षी,

Malala stood, and she stood for the right

मलाला शिक्षणाच्या हक्कासाठी

of education.

She wrote a diary for the BBC blog,

बी बी सी च्या ब्लॉगसाठी तिने रोजनिशी लिहिली.

she volunteered herself

न्यूयॉर्क टाईम्सच्या माहितीपटांसाठी

for the New York Times documentaries,

and she spoke from every platform she could.

And her voice was the most powerful voice.

It spread like a crescendo all around the world.

And that was the reason the Taliban

could not tolerate her campaign,

and on October 9 2012,

she was shot in the head at point blank range.

It was a doomsday for my family and for me.

आमच्या कुटुंबासाठी तो प्रलयाचाच दिवस होता.

The world turned into a big black hole.

आमचं जग म्हणजे एक मोठं कृष्णविवर बनलं.

While my daughter was

जेव्हा माझी कन्या

on the verge of life and death,

जीवनमरणाच्या सीमेवर होती, तेव्हा

I whispered into the ears of my wife,

मी माझ्या पत्नीला हलकेच विचारलं,

"Should I be blamed for what happened

आपल्या मुलीला जे सहन करावं लागलं,

to my daughter and your daughter?"

त्यासाठी मी दोषी आहे ना?

And she abruptly told me,

आणि ती लगेच म्हणाली,

"Please don't blame yourself.

कृपा करून स्वतःला दोष देऊ नका.

You stood for the right cause.

तुम्ही योग्य कारणासाठी उभे राहिलात.

You put your life at stake

तुम्ही तुमचं आयुष्य पणाला लावलंत.

for the cause of truth,

सत्यासाठी,

for the cause of peace,

शांततेसाठी,

and for the cause of education,

शिक्षणासाठी.

and your daughter in inspired from you

तुमची कन्या तुमच्यापासून

and she joined you.

प्रेरणा घेऊन तुम्हाला साथ देते आहे.

You both were on the right path

तुमचा दोघांचा मार्ग योग्यच होता.

and God will protect her."

देव तिचं रक्षण करील.

These few words meant a lot to me,

हे शब्द माझ्यासाठी फार मोलाचे होते.

and I didn't ask this question again.

तो प्रश्न मी पुन्हा विचारला नाही.

When Malala was in the hospital,

जेंव्हा मलाला हॉस्पिटलमध्ये होती,

and she was going through the severe pains

आत्यंतिक वेदना सहन करीत होती.

and she had had severe headaches

चेहऱ्याची नस कापली गेल्यामुळे

because her facial nerve was cut down,

तिचं डोकं प्रचंड दुखत होतं.

I used to see a dark shadow

त्यावेळी मला माझ्या पत्नीच्या चेहऱ्यावर

spreading on the face of my wife.

एक गडद छाया पसरलेली दिसायची.

But my daughter never complained.

पण माझ्या मुलीने कधीच तक्रार केली नाही.

She used to tell us,

ती आम्हाला सांगायची,

"I'm fine with my crooked smile

मी मजेत आहे. जरी वेडीवाकडी हसत असले

and with my numbness in my face.

आणि माझा चेहरा बधीर झाला असला तरीही.

I'll be okay. Please don't worry."

मी बरी होईन. काळजी करू नका.

She was a solace for us,

तीच जणु आमचा आधार होती.

and she consoled us.

तिने आमचं सांत्वन केलं.

Dear brothers and sisters,

प्रिय बंधुभगिनींनो,

we learned from her how to be resilient

अत्यंत कठीण परीस्थितीतून लवचिकपणे बाहेर कसं यायचं

in the most difficult times,

ते आम्ही तिच्याकडून शिकलो.

and I'm glad to share with you

तुम्हाला सांगताना आनंद वाटतो, की

that despite being an icon

स्त्रियांच्या आणि मुलांच्या

for the rights of children and women,

हक्कांचं प्रतीक म्हणून वावरत असतानाही ती

she is like any 16-year old girl.

कोणत्याही १६ वर्षांच्या मुलीसारखीच वागते.

She cries when her homework is incomplete.

गृहपाठ अपूर्ण राहिला तर रडते.

She quarrels with her brothers,

आपल्या भावांशी भांडते.

and I am very happy for that.

याचा मला फार आनंद वाटतो.

People ask me,

लोक मला विचारतात,

what special is in my mentorship

मी असं कोणतं खास मार्गदर्शन केलं,

which has made Malala so bold

की ज्यामुळे मलाला इतकी धीट आणि निर्भय बनली?

and so courageous and so vocal and poised?

आत्मविश्वासाने इतकं बोलू शकली?

I tell them, don't ask me what I did.

मी त्यांना सांगतो, मी काय केलं हे मला विचारू नका.

Ask me what I did not do.

मी काय केलं नाही ते विचारा.

I did not clip her wings, and that's all.

मी फक्त तिचे पंख छाटले नाहीत, इतकंच.
