In many patriarchal societies and tribal societies,

very popular young girl of her country.

Before that, she was my daughter,

but now I am her father.

Ladies and gentlemen,

if we glance to human history,

the story of women

is the story of injustice,

अन्याय,

inequality,

असमानता,

violence and exploitation.

हिंसा और शोषण की कहानी है |

You see,

in patriarchal societies,

पुरुष प्रधान समाजों में,

right from the very beginning,

शुरू से ही,

when a girl is born,

her birth is not celebrated.

She is not welcomed,

neither by father nor by mother.

The neighborhood comes

and commiserates with the mother,

and nobody congratulates the father.

और कोई भी पिता को बधाई नहीं देता |

And a mother is very uncomfortable

और एक माँ बहुत असहज महसूस करती है

for having a girl child.

एक लड़की को जन्म दे कर |

When she gives birth to the first girl child,

जब वो पहली बार एक लड़की को जन्म देती है,

first daughter, she is sad.

उसकी पहली बेटी, वो दुखी होती है |

When she gives birth to the second daughter,

जब वो दूसरी बेटी को जन्म देती है,

she is shocked,

वो भयभीत हो जाती है,

and in the expectation of a son,

और एक पुत्र की आशा में,

when she gives birth to a third daughter,

जब वो तीसरी बेटी को जन्म देती है,

she feels guilty like a criminal.

वो एक अपराधी की तरह दोषी महसूस करती है |

Not only the mother suffers,

न सिर्फ माँ को भुगतना पड़ता है,

but the daughter, the newly born daughter,

बल्कि वो बेटी, वो नवजात बच्ची,

when she grows old,

जब बड़ी हो जाती है,

she suffers too.

तब वो भी सहती है |

At the age of five,

पांच वर्ष की आयु में,

while she should be going to school,

जब उसे विद्यालय जाना चाहिए,

she stays at home

वो घर पर रहती है

and her brothers are admitted in a school.

और उसके भाइयों का स्कूल में दाखिला करा दिया जाता है |

Until the age of 12, somehow,

१२ वर्ष की आयु तक, किसी तरह,

she has a good life.

वो एक अच्छा जीवन बिताती है |

She can have fun.

वो मस्ती कर सकती है |

She can play with her friends in the streets,

वो दोस्तों के साथ सड़कों पर खेल सकती है,

and she can move around in the streets

और वो गलियों में घूम सकती है

like a butterfly.

But when she enters her teens,

लेकिन जब वो किशोरावस्था मे प्रवेश करती है,

when she becomes 13 years old,

जब वो १३ साल की हो जाती है,

she is forbidden to go out of her home

तब उसे एक पुरुष के बिना घर से बाहर निकलने से मना कर दिया जाता है |

without a male escort.

She is confined under the four walls of her home.

उसे घर की चारदिवारी तक सीमित कर दिया जाता है |

She is no more a free individual.

वो अब एक स्वतंत्र व्यक्ति नहीं रहती |

वो तथाकथित सम्मान का पर्याय बन जाती है

She becomes the so-called honor

of her father and of her brothers

अपने पिता और भाइयों

and of her family,

और परिवार के लिये,

and if she transgresses

और अगर वो उस तथाकथित सम्मान का उल्लंघन करती है,

the code of that so-called honor,

she could even be killed.

तो उसकी हत्या भी की जा सकती है |

And it is also interesting that this so-called

और यह भी दिलचस्प है कि

ये तथाकथित सम्मान,

code of honor,

it does not only affect the life of a girl,

न सिर्फ एक लड़की के जीवन पर असर डालता है,

it also affects the life

ये परिवार के पुरुषों की जिंदगी को भी प्रभावित करता है |

of the male members of the family.

I know a family of seven sisters and one brother,

मैं ७ बहनों और १ भाई के एक परिवार को जानता हूँ,

and that one brother,

और वो एक भाई,

he has migrated to the Gulf countries,

वह खाड़ी देशों में जाकर बस गया है,

to earn a living for his seven sisters

जिससे वो अपनी ७ बहनों

and parents,

और माता पिता के लिये रोज़ी रोटी कमा सके,

because he thinks that it will be humiliating

क्योंकि वो ऐसा सोचता है कि यह बहुत ही अपमानजनक होगा

if his seven sisters learn a skill

अगर उसकी बहनें कोई कौशल सीख जायें

and they go out of the home

और वो घर से बाहर जाकर

and earn some livelihood.

कुछ कमाने लगें |

So this brother,

तो ये भाई,

he sacrifices the joys of his life

अपने जीवन के सुख,

and the happiness of his sisters

और अपनी बहनों की खुशियों का,

at the altar of so-called honor.

इस तथाकथित सम्मान की वेदी पर, बलिदान कर देता है |

And there is one more norm

और पुरुष प्रधान समाजों का एक और आदर्श है

of the patriarchal societies

that is called obedience.

जिसे आज्ञाकारिता कहा जाता है |

A good girl is supposed to be

एक अच्छी लड़की उसको माना जाता है

very quiet, very humble

जो बहुत शांत, बहुत विनीत

and very submissive.

और बहुत विनम्र हो |

It is the criteria.

यही मापदंड है |

The role model good girl should be very quiet.

एक आदर्श अच्छी लड़की को बहुत ही शांत होना चाहिए |

She is supposed to be silent

उसे चुप रहना चाहिए

and she is supposed to accept the decisions

और उसे अपने माता पिता

of her father and mother

and the decisions of elders,

और बड़ों के फैसलों को स्वीकार कर लेना चाहिए

even if she does not like them.

भले ही उसे वह पसंद न हों |

If she is married to a man she doesn't like

अगर उसकी शादी किसी ऐसे आदमी से होती है जिसे वो पसंद नहीं करती

or if she is married to an old man,

या फिर अगर उसकी शादी किसी बूढ़े आदमी से होती है,

she has to accept,

उसे स्वीकार करना पड़ेगा,

because she does not want to be dubbed

क्योंकि वो नहीं चाहती

कि उसे अवज्ञाकारी करार दिया जाये |

as disobedient.

If she is married very early,

अगर उसकी शादी बहुत छोटी उम्र में करा दी जाती है,

she has to accept.

उसे स्वीकार करना पड़ेगा,

Otherwise, she will be called disobedient.

नहीं तो, उसे अवज्ञाकारी कहा जायेगा |

And what happens at the end?

अंत में क्या होता है?

In the words of a poetess,

किसी कवयित्री के लफ्ज़ों में,

she is wedded, bedded,

उसकी शादी होती है, फिर सम्भोग,

and then she gives birth to more sons and daughters.

और फिर वो जन्म देती है, और भी बेटों और बेटियों को |

And it is the irony of the situation

और ये स्थिति की विडम्बना है,

that this mother,

कि यही माँ,

she teaches the same lesson of obedience

फिर अपनी बेटियों को वही आज्ञाकारिता

to her daughter

and the same lesson of honor to her sons.

और बेटों को वही सम्मान का पाठ पढ़ाती है |

And this vicious cycle goes on, goes on.

और यह कुचक्र चलता चला जाता है |

Ladies and gentlemen,

देवियों और सज्जनों,

this plight of millions of women

लाखों स्त्रियों की इस दुर्दशा को

could be changed

बदला जा सकता है,

if we think differently,

अगर हम अपनी सोच को बदलें,

if women and men think differently,

अगर स्त्री और पुरुष अपनी सोच विकसित करें,

if men and women in the tribal and patriarchal societies

अगर पुरुष और स्त्री,

उन विकासशील देशों के आदिवासी और पुरुष प्रधान समाजों में,

in the developing countries,

if they can break a few norms

यदि वो, कुछ परिवार और समाज सम्बन्धी मानदंडों को तोड़ सकें,

of family and society,

if they can abolish the discriminatory laws

यदि वो अपने राज्यों मे भेदभावपूर्ण कानूनों की उन व्यवस्थाओं को ख़त्म कर सकें,

of the systems in their states,

which go against the basic human rights

जो महिलाओं के मूलभूत मानव अधिकारों के खिलाफ जाते हैं |

of the women.

Dear brothers and sisters, when Malala was born,

प्रिय भाइयों और बहनों,

जब मलाला का जन्म हुआ था,

and for the first time,

और जब पहली बार,

believe me,

मेरा विश्वास कीजिये,

I don't like newborn children, to be honest,

मुझे नवजात बच्चे पसंद नहीं हैं, सच में,

but when I went and I looked into her eyes,

पर जब मैं गया और मैने उसकी आँखों में देखा,

believe me,

मेरा विश्वास कीजिये,

I got extremely honored.

मैंने अत्यंत सम्मानित महसूस किया |

And long before she was born,

और उसके पैदा होने के काफी समय पहले

I thought about her name,

मैंने उसका नाम सोचा था,

and I was fascinated with a heroic

और मै अफगानिस्तान की एक वीर महान स्वतंत्रता सेनानी से प्रभावित था|

legendary freedom fighter in Afghanistan.

Her name was Malalai of Maiwand,

उनका नाम था मलालाई ऑफ़ मैवंद,

and I named my daughter after her.

और मैने उनके नाम से अपनी बेटी का नाम रख दिया |

A few days after Malala was born,

मलाला के जन्म के कुछ दिन बाद,

my daughter was born,

मेरी बेटी के जन्म के बाद,

my cousin came --

मेरे भाई आये -

and it was a coincidence --

और संयोग से -

he came to my home

वो मेरे घर आये,

and he brought a family tree,

और एक वंश-वृक्ष साथ लाये

a family tree of the Yousafzai family,

- युसुफजई परिवार का वंश-वृक्ष -

and when I looked at the family tree,

और जब मैंने उस वंश-वृक्ष को देखा,

it traced back to 300 years of our ancestors.

तो उसमें ३०० साल पुराने पूर्वजों का भी जिक्र था |

But when I looked, all were men,

पर जब मैने ध्यान दिया,

तो सभी पुरुष थे |

and I picked my pen,

और मैने अपनी कलम उठायी,

drew a line from my name,

अपने नाम से एक रेखा खींची,

and wrote, "Malala."

और लिखा, "मलाला" |

And when she grow old,

और जब वो थोड़ी बड़ी हुई,

when she was four and a half years old,

जब वो साढ़े चार साल की थी,

I admitted her in my school.

मैने उसे अपने स्कूल में भर्ती कराया |

You will be asking, then, why should I mention about

the admission of a girl in a school?

Yes, I must mention it.

हाँ , मुझे इसका जिक्र करना चाहिये |

It may be taken for granted in Canada,

कनाडा, अमेरिका और कई विकसित देशों में ये भले ही कोई बड़ी बात न हो,

in America, in many developed countries,

but in poor countries,

लेकिन गरीब देशों में,

पुरुष प्रधान समाजों में,

in patriarchal societies, in tribal societies,

आदिवासी समाजों में,

it's a big event for the life of girl.

ये एक लड़की की जिंदगी का बहुत बड़ा दिन होता है |

Enrollment in a school means

एक स्कूल में नामांकन का मतलब है

recognition of her identity and her name.

उसकी पहचान और उसके नाम को मान्यता मिलना |

Admission in a school means

एक स्कूल में दाखिले का मतलब है

that she has entered the world of dreams

कि उसने अपने सपनों और आकांक्षाओं की दुनिया में प्रवेश किया है

and aspirations

where she can explore her potentials

जहाँ वह भविष्य के लिए अपनी क्षमताओं का पता लगा सकती हैं |

for her future life.

I have five sisters,

मेरी ५ बहनें हैं,

and none of them could go to school,

और उनमें से एक भी स्कूल नहीं जा सकीं,

and you will be astonished,

और आपको आश्चर्य होगा,

two weeks before,

दो हफ्ते पहले,

when I was filling out the Canadian visa form,

जब मै कनाडा का वीजा फार्म भर रहा था,

and I was filling out the family part of the form,

और मै फार्म में परिवार खंड को भर रहा था,

I could not recall

मुझे अपनी कुछ बहनों के कुलनाम याद नहीं आए|

the surnames of some of my sisters.

And the reason was

और उसका कारण ये था

that I have never, never seen the names

कि मैने कभी भी

अपनी बहनों का नाम

of my sisters written on any document.

किसी भी दस्तावेज पर लिखा हुआ नहीं देखा है|

That was the reason that

यही वजह है कि

I valued my daughter.

मैने अपनी बेटी को महत्व दिया |

What my father could not give to my sisters

जो मेरे पिता

मेरी बहनों और अपनी बेटियों को नहीं दे सके,

and to his daughters,

I thought I must change it.

मैने सोचा कि मुझे ये बदलना चाहिये |

I used to appreciate the intelligence

मै अपनी बेटी की अक्लमंदी और प्रतिभा की सराहना करता था |

and the brilliance of my daughter.

I encouraged her to sit with me

मैने उसे प्रोत्साहित किया

कि जब मेरे दोस्त आयें तो वो मेरे साथ बैठे|

when my friends used to come.

I encouraged her to go with me to different meetings.

मैने उसे प्रोत्साहित किया

कि विभिन्न बैठकों में वो मेरे साथ चले |

And all these good values,

और ये सभी अच्छे संस्कार,

I tried to inculcate in her personality.

मैने उसके व्यक्तित्व में विकसित करने की कोशिश की |

And this was not only she, only Malala.

और यह केवल मलाला के साथ ही नहीं था |

I imparted all these good values

मैने ये सभी अच्छे संस्कार,

to my school, girl students and boy students as well.

अपने स्कूल में,

छात्रों और छात्राओं को भी दिये |

I used education for emancipation.

मैने शिक्षा का इस्तेमाल उद्धार लिये किया |

I taught my girls,

मैने अपनी लड़कियों को सिखाया,

I taught my girl students,

मैने अपनी छात्राओं को सिखाया,

to unlearn the lesson of obedience.

कि वो आज्ञाकारिता का पाठ भुला दें |

I taught my boy students

मैने अपने छात्रों को सिखाया,

to unlearn the lesson of so-called pseudo-honor.

कि वो तथाकथित झूठे सम्मान का पाठ भुला दें|

Dear brothers and sisters,

प्रिय भाईयों और बहनों,

we were striving for more rights for women,

हम महिलाओं के अधिक अधिकारों के लिए प्रयास कर रहे थे

and we were struggling to have more,

और हम संघर्ष कर रहे थे

कि समाज में महिलाओं को अधिक से अधिक स्थान मिल सके |

more and more space for the women in society.

But we came across a new phenomenon.

लेकिन हम एक नई घटना के पार आये |

It was lethal to human rights

यह मानव अधिकारों के लिए

and particularly to women's rights.

और विशेष रूप से महिलाओं के अधिकारों के लिए घातक थी |

It was called Talibanization.

उसको तालिबान-निर्माण कहा गया |

It means a complete negation

इसका मतलब है - महिलाओं की भागीदारी का पूरा निषेध,

of women's participation

in all political, economical and social activities.

सभी राजनीतिक, आर्थिक और सामाजिक गतिविधियों से |

Hundreds of schools were lost.

सैकड़ों स्कूल नष्ट कर दिये गये |

Girls were prohibited from going to school.

लड़कियों के स्कूल जाने पर रोक लगा दी गयी |

Women were forced to wear veils

महिलाओं को बुर्का पहनने के लिये मजबूर किया गया

and they were stopped from going to the markets.

और उनके बाजार जाने पर रोक लगा दी गयी |

Musicians were silenced,

संगीतकारों को खामोश कर दिया गया,

girls were flogged

लड़कियों पर कोड़े बरसाये गये

and singers were killed.

और गायकों को मार दिया गया |

Millions were suffering,

लाखों पीड़ित थे ,

but few spoke,

लेकिन कुछ ने आवाज़ उठायी,

and it was the most scary thing

और ये सबसे डरावनी बात होती थी

when you have all around such people

जब आपके आसपास सभी ऐसे लोग हों

who kill and who flog,

जो मारते हों और कोड़े लगाते हों,

and you speak for your rights.

और आप अपने अधिकारों के लिए बोलो |

It's really the most scary thing.

यह वास्तव में सबसे डरावनी बात है |

At the age of 10,

१० साल की उम्र में,

Malala stood, and she stood for the right

मलाला खड़ी हुई,

और वह अपने शिक्षा के अधिकार के लिये खड़ी हुई |

of education.

She wrote a diary for the BBC blog,

उसने बीबीसी ब्लॉग के लिए एक डायरी लिखी,

she volunteered herself

उसने न्यूयॉर्क टाइम्स वृत्तचित्रों के लिए खुद को नामांकित किया,

for the New York Times documentaries,

and she spoke from every platform she could.

और उसने हर-संभव मंच से बात की |

And her voice was the most powerful voice.

It spread like a crescendo all around the world.

And that was the reason the Taliban

could not tolerate her campaign,

and on October 9 2012,

she was shot in the head at point blank range.

उसे बिंदु रिक्त सीमा से सिर में गोली मार दी गयी |

It was a doomsday for my family and for me.

यह मेरे और मेरे परिवार के लिए प्रलय का दिन था |

The world turned into a big black hole.

दुनिया एक बड़े ब्लैक होल जैसी लगने लगी |

While my daughter was

जब मेरी बेटी

on the verge of life and death,

जिंदगी और मौत के कगार पर थी,

I whispered into the ears of my wife,

मैने अपनी पत्नी से धीरे से पूछा,

"Should I be blamed for what happened

" क्या मुझे उस सब का दोषी माना जाना चाहिये

to my daughter and your daughter?"

जो हमारी बेटी के साथ हुआ ? "

And she abruptly told me,

और उन्होंने अचानक मुझसे कहा,

"Please don't blame yourself.

"कृपया अपने आप को दोषी न ठहरायें |

You stood for the right cause.

आप सही कारण के लिए खड़े हुए |

You put your life at stake

आपने अपना जीवन दांव पे लगा दिया -

for the cause of truth,

सच्चाई के लिये,

for the cause of peace,

शांति के लिये,

and for the cause of education,

और शिक्षा के लिये,

and your daughter in inspired from you

और आपकी बेटी आपसे प्रेरित हो गयी

and she joined you.

और आपके साथ शामिल हो गयी |

You both were on the right path

आप दोनों सही रास्ते पर चल रहे थे

and God will protect her."

और ईश्वर उसकी रक्षा करेंगे | "

These few words meant a lot to me,

ये कुछ शब्द मेरे लिये बहुत मायने रखते हैं

and I didn't ask this question again.

और मैंने फिर कभी ये प्रश्न नहीं पूछा |

When Malala was in the hospital,

जब मलाला अस्पताल में थी,

and she was going through the severe pains

और वो गंभीर पीड़ा से गुज़र रही थी,

and she had had severe headaches

और उसको तीव्र सिर दर्द होता था,

because her facial nerve was cut down,

क्योंकि उसके चेहरे की नस कट गयी थी,

I used to see a dark shadow

मुझे एक अँधेरी छाया दिखाई पड़ती थी

spreading on the face of my wife.

अपनी पत्नी के चेहरे पर |

But my daughter never complained.

लेकिन मेरी बेटी ने कभी शिकायत नहीं की |

She used to tell us,

वो कहती थी,

"I'm fine with my crooked smile

" मै अपनी टेढ़ी मुस्कान

and with my numbness in my face.

और अपने चेहरे की अकड़न के साथ ठीक हूँ |

I'll be okay. Please don't worry."

मैं ठीक हो जाऊँगी | चिंता मत करिये | "

She was a solace for us,

वो हमारा धीरज थी

and she consoled us.

और उसने हमें सांत्वना दी |

Dear brothers and sisters,

प्रिय भाईयों और बहनों,

we learned from her how to be resilient

हमने उससे सीखा

कि सबसे कठिन समय में भी कैसे मजबूत बना जाए

in the most difficult times,

and I'm glad to share with you

और मुझे आपको यह बताते हुए ख़ुशी होगी

that despite being an icon

कि बच्चों और महिलाओं के अधिकारों के लिए एक आदर्श होने के बावजूद,

for the rights of children and women,

she is like any 16-year old girl.

वह किसी भी 16 साल की लड़की की तरह है |

She cries when her homework is incomplete.

होमवर्क अधूरा रह जाने पर वो रोती है |

She quarrels with her brothers,

वो अपने भाइयों के साथ झगड़ती है

and I am very happy for that.

और मै इस बात से बहुत खुश हूँ |

People ask me,

लोग मुझसे पूछते हैं ,

what special is in my mentorship

मेरे पालन पोषण में ऐसा क्या विशेष है

which has made Malala so bold

जिसने मलाला को इतना निर्भीक,

and so courageous and so vocal and poised?

इतना साहसी, इतना मुखर और इतना संतुलित बना दिया ?

I tell them, don't ask me what I did.

मै उनसे कहता हूँ, मुझसे ये मत पूछो कि मैने क्या किया |

Ask me what I did not do.

मुझसे ये पूछो कि मैने क्या नहीं किया |

I did not clip her wings, and that's all.

मैने उसके पर नहीं काटे, बस इतना ही |
