My Daughter, Malala | Ziauddin Yousafzai | TED Talks

In many patriarchal societies and tribal societies,

fathers are usually known by their sons,

په ډېرو نرواکو او قبايلي ټولنو کې

but I'm one of the few fathers

who is known by his daughter,

and I am proud of it.

(Applause)

پلرونه معمولاً په زامنو پېژندل کېږي

Malala started her campaign for education

خو زه يو له هغو څو پلرونو يم

چي د خپلې لور په نامه پېژندل کېږي

and stood for her rights in 2007,

او زه په دې وياړم

and when her efforts were honored in 2011,

and she was given the national youth peace prize,

ملالې د تعليم لپاره مبارزه پيل کړه

and she became a very famous,

very popular young girl of her country.

او په ٢٠٠٧م کې د خپل حق لپاره را پاڅېده

Before that, she was my daughter,

او چي هڅې يې په ٢٠١١م کال کې وستايل شوې

او د سولې قومي ايوارډ ورکړل شو

but now I am her father.

او په خپل هېواد کې د ډېرې کم عمره

Ladies and gentlemen,

if we glance to human history,

نجلۍ په توګه و پېژندل شوه

the story of women

تر هغه مخکې دا زما لور وه

is the story of injustice,

خو اوس زه د دې پلار يم

inequality,

ښاغليو آغليو!

violence and exploitation.

که موږ انساني تاريخ و ګورو

د ښځې داستان

د ښځې داستان د ستم او تېري

You see,

in patriarchal societies,

د نابرابرۍ

right from the very beginning,

تشدد او محروميت داستان دى

when a girl is born,

تاسې و ګورئ!

her birth is not celebrated.

په نرواکو ټولنو کې

She is not welcomed,

بنسټيزو حقونو ته پام وکړئ

neither by father nor by mother.

The neighborhood comes

کله چي يوه نجلۍ و زېږي

and commiserates with the mother,

پر زېږېدو يې خوشالي نه کېږي

and nobody congratulates the father.

نړۍ ته د راتګ هرکلى يې نه کېږي

نه د پلار او نه هم د مور له خوا

And a mother is very uncomfortable

څنګلوري راځي

for having a girl child.

له مور سره خواخوږي کوي

او پلار ته هيڅوک هم مبارکي نه ورکوي

When she gives birth to the first girl child,

او مور يې ځان ډېر ناارامه ګڼي

first daughter, she is sad.

When she gives birth to the second daughter,

چي ګواکې لور يې زېږولې ده

she is shocked,

and in the expectation of a son,

کله يې چي لومړى اولاد نجلۍ وي

لور و زېږوي، نو غمجنه شي

when she gives birth to a third daughter,

کله چي دويمه هم لور و زېږوي

she feels guilty like a criminal.

نو ټکان و خوري

Not only the mother suffers,

او چي د زوى په هيله يې

but the daughter, the newly born daughter,

دريمه لور و زېږي

when she grows old,

نو ځان د مجرمې غوندې ګناهګاره ګڼي

she suffers too.

At the age of five,

while she should be going to school,

نه يواځې يې مور ستونځې ګالي

she stays at home

لور يې هم، زېږولې لور يې هم

and her brothers are admitted in a school.

چي لويه شي

ستونځې ګالي

Until the age of 12, somehow,

چي لا پينځه کلنه وي

she has a good life.

او بايد ښوونځي ته لاړه شي

She can have fun.

دا په کور کې ناسته وي

She can play with her friends in the streets,

او وروڼه يې په ښوونځي کې داخل شي

and she can move around in the streets

تر دوولس کلنۍ يې لا ژوند

like a butterfly.

ښه وي

But when she enters her teens,

شوخي کولاى ش

له خوندکيو سره

when she becomes 13 years old,

she is forbidden to go out of her home

په کوڅو کې شاوخوا ګرځېداى شي

لکه پتنګ

without a male escort.

خو چي پېغلتوب يې پيل شي

She is confined under the four walls of her home.

چي کله دا ديارلس کلنه شي

She is no more a free individual.

نو له نارينه محافظ پرته يې

له کوره پر وتلو بنديز و لګېږي

She becomes the so-called honor

د کور په څلورو دېوالونو کې بندۍ شي

of her father and of her brothers

and of her family,

دا نوره يوه ازاده انسانه نه وي

and if she transgresses

the code of that so-called honor,

دا د خپل پلار، ورور او کورنۍ تش په نامه پت او عزت وګرځي

she could even be killed.

And it is also interesting that this so-called

او که دا له دې تش په نامه عزته سرغړونه وکړي

code of honor,

it does not only affect the life of a girl,

نو حتى وژل کېداى هم شي

it also affects the life

of the male members of the family.

او دا هم ډېره جالبه ده چي دا تش په نامه پت

I know a family of seven sisters and one brother,

نه يواځې د نجلۍ ژوند اغېزمنوي

د کورنۍ د نارينوو ژوند هم اغېزمنوي

and that one brother,

he has migrated to the Gulf countries,

زه يوه کورنۍ پېژنم

to earn a living for his seven sisters

and parents,

اووه خويندې دي، يو ورور يې دى

because he thinks that it will be humiliating

او هغه يو ورور يې، د خليج هېوادونو مسافر دى

if his seven sisters learn a skill

د خپلو اوو خويندو، مور و پلار د ساتنې لپاره

and they go out of the home

and earn some livelihood.

ځکه دى فکر کوي، چي دا به سپکاوى وي

So this brother,

he sacrifices the joys of his life

که يې اووه خويندې تعليم او هنر زده کړي او له کوره دباندې ووځي

and the happiness of his sisters

او ځان ته څه پيسې و ګټي

at the altar of so-called honor.

نو دغه ورور د خپل ژوند خوند قربانوي

And there is one more norm

of the patriarchal societies

that is called obedience.

او د خويندو خوشالي په اوبو لاهو کوي

د تش په نامه پت او عزت د قربانۍ پر ډګر

A good girl is supposed to be

او د نرواکې ټولنې يو بل دود دى

very quiet, very humble

چي اطاعت او فرمانبرداري بلل کېږي

and very submissive.

يوه ښه نجلۍ هغه نجلۍ ګڼل کېږي

It is the criteria.

The role model good girl should be very quiet.

چي ډېره پټخولې، ډېره عاجزه

She is supposed to be silent

او ډېره د خبرې منونکې وي

and she is supposed to accept the decisions

of her father and mother

دا يو نرخ دى چي اصيله نجلۍ بايد ډېره پټخولې وي

and the decisions of elders,

even if she does not like them.

دا مجبوره وي چي پټه خوله و اوسي

If she is married to a man she doesn't like

او د خپل پلار، مور او مشرانو پرېکړه ومني

or if she is married to an old man,

she has to accept,

because she does not want to be dubbed

حتى که يې خوښه هم نه وي

as disobedient.

If she is married very early,

که دا داسې چاته ودېږي چي خوښ يې نه وي

she has to accept.

Otherwise, she will be called disobedient.

او که پر زاړه سړي ودېږي، بايد ويې مني

And what happens at the end?

ځکه دا نه غواړي چي سرغړوونکې وبلل شي

In the words of a poetess,

she is wedded, bedded,

که په کم عمرۍ ودېږي بايد ويې مني

and then she gives birth to more sons and daughters.

که نه وي سپين سترګې او نامنونکې به بلل کېږي

او نتيجه يې څه وي؟

And it is the irony of the situation

يوه شاعره وايي: نجلۍ ودېږي، مجبورېږي او بيا ډېر زامن او لوڼې راوړي

that this mother,

she teaches the same lesson of obedience

to her daughter

and the same lesson of honor to her sons.

او دا عجيبه د ملنډو يو حالت دى

And this vicious cycle goes on, goes on.

دغه مور خپلې لور ته هم

د ځان غوندې د اطاعت درس ورکوي

Ladies and gentlemen,

او زوى ته هم د غيرت همدغه درس ورکوي

this plight of millions of women

او د شومو ارمانونو دا پهيه روانه- روانه وي

could be changed

if we think differently,

ښاغليو او آغليو!

if women and men think differently,

د ميلينونو مېرمنو دا بد حالت بدلېداى شي

if men and women in the tribal and patriarchal societies

in the developing countries,

که موږ لږ بېل فکر وکړو

if they can break a few norms

که ښځه او نارينه لږ بېل فکر وکړي

of family and society,

که نارينه او ښځه په نرواکو- قبايلي ټولنو کې په پرمختلونکيو هېوادونو کې

if they can abolish the discriminatory laws

که دوى د خپلې کورنۍ او ټولنې ځينې [تاواني] دودونه ماتولاى شي

of the systems in their states,

which go against the basic human rights

of the women.

که دوى توپيري قوانين له منځه يوسي

Dear brothers and sisters, when Malala was born,

چي د دوى د هېوادونو د نظامونو برخه دي

and for the first time,

او د ښځو د اساسي حقونو خلاف دي

believe me,

I don't like newborn children, to be honest,

ګرانو ورورڼو او خويندو!

but when I went and I looked into her eyes,

ملاله چي زېږېدلې وه

په لومړي ځل ___ باور وکړئ له زړه وايم نوى زېږېدلى ماشوم مي نه خوښېږي

believe me,

I got extremely honored.

And long before she was born,

هـــاهـــاهـــا

I thought about her name,

خو زه چي ورغلم او د دې سترګې مي وليدې

and I was fascinated with a heroic

باور وکړئ

legendary freedom fighter in Afghanistan.

ډېر زيات وياړ مي وکړ

او د دې تر زوکړې ډېر مخکې

Her name was Malalai of Maiwand,

ما د دې پر نامه فکر کاوه

and I named my daughter after her.

او زما زړه د افغانستان د ازادۍ د جګړې له اتلې سره تړلى وو

A few days after Malala was born,

my daughter was born,

چي د ميوند ملالۍ نومېدله

my cousin came --

and it was a coincidence --

او ما پر خپلې لور همدغه نوم کښېښوو

he came to my home

and he brought a family tree,

د ملالې تر زېږېدو څو ورځې وروسته

a family tree of the Yousafzai family,

زما يو تربور زموږ کور ته راغى او دا هسې يو ناڅاپي خبره وه

and when I looked at the family tree,

it traced back to 300 years of our ancestors.

ده زموږ د ټبر شجره راوړه

But when I looked, all were men,

د يوسفزيو د ټبر شجره

ما چي دغه شجره وکتله

and I picked my pen,

drew a line from my name,

زموږ د تېرو درې سوه کلونو د پلرونو- نيکونو نومونه پکې ليکلي وو

and wrote, "Malala."

خو ما چي وکتل، ټول سړي وو

And when she grow old,

when she was four and a half years old,

ما خپل قلم را واخيست

زما له نامه مي کرښه و ايستله

I admitted her in my school.

او ومي ليکل: ملاله

You will be asking, then, why should I mention about

او کله چي دا لږ را لويه شوه

the admission of a girl in a school?

Yes, I must mention it.

چي لا د څلورنيمو کلونو وه

It may be taken for granted in Canada,

نو ما پخپل ښوونځي کې داخله کړه

in America, in many developed countries,

تاسې به واياست چي ولې په ښوونځي کې د نجلۍ د داخلېدو ذکر کوم

but in poor countries,

in patriarchal societies, in tribal societies,

هو، دا يادونه زه بايد وکړم

it's a big event for the life of girl.

کېداى شي دا يو ساده رسمي کار وي

په کينېډا، امريکا او ډېرو پرمختلليو وطنو کې

Enrollment in a school means

خو په غريبو هېوادونو کې

recognition of her identity and her name.

په نرواکو او قبايلي ټولنو کې

دا د نجلۍ د ژوند يوه ډېره لويه پېښه ده

Admission in a school means

that she has entered the world of dreams

په ښوونځي کې داخلېدل، مانا

and aspirations

د نجلۍ خپل ځان او خپل نوم پېژندل

where she can explore her potentials

for her future life.

په ښوونځي کې داخلېدل مانا دا د خوبونو او الهامونو نړۍ ته داخله شوه

I have five sisters,

and none of them could go to school,

and you will be astonished,

چي هلته دا له خپل استعداده کار اخيستلاى شي

two weeks before,

د خپل راتلونکي ژوند لپاره

when I was filling out the Canadian visa form,

زما پينځه خويندې دي

خو يوې هم ښوونځى نه دى ويلى

and I was filling out the family part of the form,

تاسې به حيران ياست _ کله چي ما فارم ډکاوه

I could not recall

the surnames of some of my sisters.

دوې اوونۍ مخکې چي مي د کېنېډا د ويزې فارم ډکاوه

And the reason was

او ما په فارم کې د خپلې کورنۍ برخه ډکوله

that I have never, never seen the names

of my sisters written on any document.

ماته د خپلو ځينو خويندو نومونه نه را يادېدل

That was the reason that

ځکه چي ما کله هم د خپلو خويندو نومونه په ليکلې بڼه پر هيڅ کوم کاغذ نه وو ليدلي

I valued my daughter.

What my father could not give to my sisters

and to his daughters,

همدغه سبب وو، چي

I thought I must change it.

ما خپله لور قدرمنه راکړه

I used to appreciate the intelligence

څه چي زما پلار زما خويندو ته يانې خپلو لوڼو ته ور نه کړل

and the brilliance of my daughter.

I encouraged her to sit with me

زه فکر کوم، زه يې بايد ضرور بدل کړم

when my friends used to come.

I encouraged her to go with me to different meetings.

ما به د خپلې لور استعداد او ځيرکتيا ستايل

And all these good values,

I tried to inculcate in her personality.

ما به دا هڅوله چي له ما سره کښېني چي زما ملګري به ماته راتلل

And this was not only she, only Malala.

ما هڅوله چي مختلفو غونډو ته راسره لاړه شي

ما هڅوله چي مختلفو غونډو ته راسره لاړه شي

I imparted all these good values

to my school, girl students and boy students as well.

او داسې ټول ارزښتونه، ما غوښتل چي د دې د شخصيت برخه شي

I used education for emancipation.

او دا يواځې دا، يواځې ملاله نه وه

I taught my girls,

ما دغه ټول غوره ارزښتونه، د خپل ښوونځي نجونو او هلکانو زده کوونکو ته هم ور و سپارل

I taught my girl students,

to unlearn the lesson of obedience.

ما تعليم د ازادۍ لپاره و کاراوه

I taught my boy students

to unlearn the lesson of so-called pseudo-honor.

ما خپلو نجونو شاګردانو ته درس ورکړ، چي د اطاعت او غلامۍ سبق هېر کړي

ما خپلو هلکانو شاګردانو ته درس ورکړ

Dear brothers and sisters,

چي د تش په نامه درواغجن پت سبق هېر کړي

we were striving for more rights for women,

and we were struggling to have more,

ګرانو وروڼو او خويندو!

more and more space for the women in society.

But we came across a new phenomenon.

موږ د ښځو د لا نورو حقونو لپاره مبارزه کوله

It was lethal to human rights

او موږ هڅه کوله چي په ټولنه کې د ښځې لپاره نور او نور ځاى پيدا کړو

and particularly to women's rights.

It was called Talibanization.

خو موږ له يوه نوي رجحان سره مخامخ شوو

It means a complete negation

چي د انساني حقونو، خصوصاً د ښځو د حقونو لپاره مرګونى وو

of women's participation

in all political, economical and social activities.

او هغه رجحان طالبانيت نومېږي

Hundreds of schools were lost.

مانا دا چي د ښځې د برخې اخيستو بشپړ مخنيوى

Girls were prohibited from going to school.

په ټولو سياسي، اقتصادي او ټولنيزو چارو کې

Women were forced to wear veils

سلګونه ښوونځي په بمونو والوځول شول

and they were stopped from going to the markets.

ښوونځيو ته د نجونو د تګ مخنيوى وشو

Musicians were silenced,

girls were flogged

and singers were killed.

په ښځو په زوره چادرۍ واغوستل شوې

Millions were suffering,

او بازار ته پر تلو يې بنديز ولګېد

but few spoke,

موسيقاران پټه خوله کړاى شول

and it was the most scary thing

نجونې په لښتو- په دُرو و وهل شوې

when you have all around such people

او سندرغاړي و وژل شول

ميلينونه خلک رنځېدل، خو ځينو ږغ اوچت کړ

who kill and who flog,

and you speak for your rights.

It's really the most scary thing.

او دا ډېر ډاروونکى حالت وو

چي شاوخوا ته داسې خلک وي

At the age of 10,

Malala stood, and she stood for the right

چي خلک وژني، په دُرو يې وهي او ته د خپل حق خبره وکړې، دا ډېر ډاروونکى وخت وي

of education.

She wrote a diary for the BBC blog,

ملاله په لس کلنۍ کې را پاڅېده او د تعليم د حق لپاره را پاڅېده

she volunteered herself

for the New York Times documentaries,

and she spoke from every platform she could.

دې د بي بي سي د بلاګ لپاره ډايري وليکله

And her voice was the most powerful voice.

دې د نيويارک ټايمز په ډاکومينټريو کې پخپله خوښه برخه واخيسته

It spread like a crescendo all around the world.

او په هر ځاى کې چي امکان وو، خبره يې وکړه

And that was the reason the Taliban

او د دې ږغ ډېر زورور ږغ وو

could not tolerate her campaign,

لکه ازانګه په ټوله نړۍ کې خپره شوه

and on October 9 2012,

she was shot in the head at point blank range.

ځکه نو طالبانو د دې مبارزه نه شواى زغملاى

It was a doomsday for my family and for me.

او پر ٩ نومبر ٢٠١٢م له نيژدې پر سر په ډزو و ويشتل شوه

The world turned into a big black hole.

While my daughter was

on the verge of life and death,

دا زما کورنۍ او ماته د محشر ورځ وه

I whispered into the ears of my wife,

نړۍ راته په لويې تيارې خونې بدله شوه

"Should I be blamed for what happened

to my daughter and your daughter?"

هغه وخت چي لور مي د مرګ او ژوند تر منځ وه

And she abruptly told me,

زه د خپلې مېرمنې پر غوږ ور پرېوتم

"Please don't blame yourself.

You stood for the right cause.

زما او ستا له لور سره چي څه وشول آيا دا زما ملامتيا نه ده؟

You put your life at stake

for the cause of truth,

for the cause of peace,

دې سمدستي راته وويل

and for the cause of education,

مهرباني وکه ته ولې ځان ملامتوې

and your daughter in inspired from you

and she joined you.

ته خو د ښه کار لپاره را پاڅېدې

You both were on the right path

تا خو خپل ژوند له ريښتيا، امن او تعليم سره پيوند کړ

and God will protect her."

These few words meant a lot to me,

او لور دي له تا الهام واخيست، ستا ملګرې شوه

and I didn't ask this question again.

When Malala was in the hospital,

ستاسې دواړو لاره سمه وه او خداى به دا و ژغوري

and she was going through the severe pains

دغو څو توريو ماته ډېره مانا لرله

and she had had severe headaches

او دا پوښتنه مي بيا ترې ونه کړه

because her facial nerve was cut down,

ملاله چي په روغتون کې وه

I used to see a dark shadow

spreading on the face of my wife.

او دا په شديد درد اخته وه

سر يې شديد دردونه کول

But my daughter never complained.

ځکه چي د مخ رګونه يې غوڅ وو

ما ليدل د مېرمنې پر مخ مي تور سيورى خپور وو

She used to tell us,

"I'm fine with my crooked smile

and with my numbness in my face.

I'll be okay. Please don't worry."

خـو

لور مي هيڅ شکايت ونه کړ

She was a solace for us,

and she consoled us.

دې موږ ته ويل، چي

زه له دې کږې موسکا او بې حسې څېرې سره ښه يم

Dear brothers and sisters,

زه به ښه شم ګورئ تاسې اندېښنه مه کوئ

we learned from her how to be resilient

دا موږ ته يو ډاډ وه او موږ ته يې تسلي راکړه

in the most difficult times,

and I'm glad to share with you

ګرانو وروڼو او خويندو!

that despite being an icon

موږ له دې زده کړل، چي په سختۍ کې څوک څنګه بايد هيله من و اوسي

for the rights of children and women,

she is like any 16-year old girl.

خوشالېږم چي له تاسې سره دا خبره شريکوم

ملاله، پرته له دې چي د ماشومانو او د ښځو د حقونو لپاره يو مثال ده

She cries when her homework is incomplete.

دا د هرې شپاړس کلنې نجلۍ غوندې نجلۍ ده

She quarrels with her brothers,

and I am very happy for that.

دا د هرې شپاړس کلنې نجلۍ غوندې نجلۍ ده

People ask me,

دا ژاړي چي د کور کار يې نه وي کړى

what special is in my mentorship

which has made Malala so bold

دا له خپلو وروڼو سره جګړې کوي او زه په دې ډېر خوشاله يم

and so courageous and so vocal and poised?

خلک له ما پوښتنه کوي

I tell them, don't ask me what I did.

زما په لارښوونه کې خاص څه وو

چي ملاله يې زړوره، باجرئته، خولوره او درنه کړه

Ask me what I did not do.

I did not clip her wings, and that's all.

زه ورته وايم، دا مه پوښته چي څه مي وکړل
