I had a fire nine days ago.

My archive:

175 films, my 16-millimeter negative,

all my books, my dad's books, my photographs.

I'd collected --

စုစောင်းထားခဲ့တာတွေ ....

I was a collector, major, big-time.

ကျွန်တော်က စုစောင်းသူ၊ အဓိက စန်းထချိန်

It's gone.

သွားပြီလေ။

I just looked at it,

ဒါကို ကြည့်ပဲကြည့်လိုက်တယ်၊

and I didn't know what to do.

ဘာလုပ်ရမှန်း မသိခဲ့ဘူး။

I mean, this was --

ဆိုလိုတာက ဒါက ..

was I my things?

ငါဟာ ငါ့ပစ္စည်းတွေလား။

I always live in the present -- I love the present.

ကျွန်တော် ပစ္စုပ္ပန်မှာပဲ အမြဲနေတယ်။ ပစ္စုပ္ပန်ကို ချစ်တယ်။

I cherish the future.

အနာဂတ်ကို မြတ်နိုးတယ်။

And I was taught some strange thing as a kid,

ကလေးတုန်းက ထူးဆန်းတာတစ်ခု သင်ခဲ့ရတယ်၊

like, you've got to make something good out of something bad.

This was bad! Man, I was --

That's my camera lens. The first one --

the one I shot my Bob Dylan film with 35 years ago.

That's my feature film. "King, Murray"

won Cannes Film Festival 1970 --

Cannes ရုပ်ရှင်ပွဲတော်မှာ ဆုရခဲ့တာ...

the only print I had.

ကိုယ်မှာရှိတဲ့ တစ်ခုတည်းသော ပုံနှိပ်လက်ရာ။

That's my papers.

ဒါက သတင်းစာတွေ။

That was in minutes -- 20 minutes.

မိနစ်ပိုင်းပဲ၊ မိနစ် ၂၀ ပါ။

Epiphany hit me. Something hit me.

နိမိတ်ပြတာ၊ တစ်ခုခုက ရိုက်ခတ်လိုက်တာပါ။

"You've got to make something good out of something bad,"

"အဆိုးကနေ အကောင်းလုပ်ဖို့လိုတယ်။"

I started to say to my friends, neighbors, my sister.

မိတ်ဆွေတွေ၊ အိမ်နီးချင်းတွေ၊ ညီမကိုပြောတယ်

By the way, that's "Sputnik." I ran it last year.

ဒါနဲ့နေဦး၊ ဒါက Sputnik မနှစ်က ပြခဲ့တာ။

"Sputnik" was downtown, the negative. It wasn't touched.

Sputnik က မြို့ထဲမှာ၊ နက်ဂတစ်လေ၊ ဒါ မထိသွားဘူး။

These are some pieces of things I used in my Sputnik feature film,

Sputnik ကားထဲမှာ သုံးခဲ့တဲ့ အပိုင်းတွေရှိတယ်။

which opens in New York in two weeks

downtown.

၂ ပတ်အတွင်း ထွက်မှာ။

I called my sister. I called my neighbors. I said, "Come dig."

ညီမကို၊ အိမ်နီးနာချင်းတွေကို ဖုန်းဆက်၊

That's me at my desk.

လာကြ၊ တူးကြ။ ငါ အခု စားပွဲမှာ။

That was a desk took 40-some years to build.

ဒါက ဆောက်ဖို့ နှစ် ၄၀ ချိန်ယူရတဲ့ စားပွဲ။

You know -- all the stuff.

သိတဲ့အတိုင်း၊ အကုန်လုံးလေ၊။

That's my daughter, Jean.

She came. She's a nurse in San Francisco.

San Francisco က သူနာပြုပါ။

"Dig it up," I said. "Pieces.

I want pieces. Bits and pieces."

I came up with this idea: a life of bits and pieces,

which I'm just starting to work on -- my next project.

That's my sister. She took care of pictures,

because I was a big collector of snapshot photography

that I believed said a lot.

And those are some of the pictures that --

something was good about the burnt pictures.

I didn't know. I looked at that --

မသိဘူးဗျာ၊ ဒါကို မကြည့်ဘူး။ ပြောမိတာက

I said, "Wow, is that better than the --"

ဟာ ... ထက်တော့ သာပါတယ်။ Jimmy Doolittle

That's my proposal on Jimmy Doolittle. I made that movie for television.

မှာတင်ပ​ြခဲ့တာ၊ တီဗီအတွက် ရိုက်ခဲ့တာလေ။

It's the only copy I had. Pieces of it.

ကျွန်တော့မှာရှိတဲ့ တစ်ခုတည်းသော ကော်ပီပါ။ အစိတ်အပိုင်းတွေပါ။

Idea about women.

မိန်းမတွေအကြောင်း စိတ်ကူးပါ။

So I started to say, "Hey, man, you are too much!

ဒါနဲ့ စပြောလိုက်တယ် ဟေ့လူ၊ များလွန်းတယ်၊

You could cry about this." I really didn't.

ဒါနဲ့အတွက် ခင်ဗျား အော်ငိုလို့ရတယ်။ တကယ်တော့ မငိုခဲ့ပါဘူး။

I just instead said,

ဒီအစား ပြောတာက

"I'm going to make something out of it, and maybe next year ... "

"ဒါကနေတစ်ခုခုလုပ်မယ်၊ နောင်နှစ်လားပဲပေါ့"

And I appreciate this moment

ဒီအခိုက်အတန့်မှာ ကိုယ့်ကို

to come up on this stage with so many people

ဖြေသိမ့်မှုပေးခဲ့ကြတဲ့လူတွေအများကြီးနဲ့

who've already given me so much solace,

ဒီစင်ပေါ်လာရတာ ဝမ်းသာမိပါတယ်။

and just say to TEDsters:

ဒါ TED က ပုဂ္ဂိုလ်တွေကိုပဲ ပြောတာပါ။

I'm proud of me. That I take something bad,

ကိုယ့်ကိုယ်ကို ဂုဏ်ယူတယ်ဗျာ။ အဆိုးဖြစ်တာကိုယူပြီး ပြောင်းမယ်၊

I turn it, and I'm going to make something good out of this,

all these pieces.

I was a big record collector --

the records didn't make it. Boy, I tell you,

film burns. Film burns.

I mean, this was 16-millimeter safety film.

The negatives are gone.

နက်ဂတစ်တွေကတော့ သွားပြီပေါ့။

That's my father's letter to me, telling me to

အဖေစာရေးပြီး ပြောတာက

marry the woman I first married when I was 20.

အသက် ၂၀ တုန်းက ပထမဆုံး လက်ထပ်ခဲ့တဲ့ မိန်းမကို လက်ထပ်လိုက်တဲ့။

That's my daughter and me.

She's still there. She's there this morning, actually.

That's my house.

My family's living in the Hilton Hotel in Scotts Valley.

That's my wife, Heidi,

who didn't take it as well as I did.
