175 films, my 16-millimeter negative,

मैं चीज़ें इकट्ठी करता था, ख़ूब, जम के।

all my books, my dad's books, my photographs.

वो सब चला गया।

I'd collected --

मैं बस देखता रहा गया,

I was a collector, major, big-time.

और कुछ समझ नहीं आ रहा था की क्या करूँ।

It's gone.

मतलब, ऐसे की --

I just looked at it,

क्या मेरा वजूद सिर्फ़ उन चीज़ों भर का था?

and I didn't know what to do.

मैं तो हमेशा आज में जीता हूँ - आज से प्यार करता हूँ।

I mean, this was --

मैं भविष्य को ले कर ख़ुश रहता हूँ।

was I my things?

और बचपन में मुझे कुछ अलग सी बातें सिखायी गयी थीं।

I always live in the present -- I love the present.

जैसे, ख़राब चीज़ से कुछ बढ़िया बनाओ

I cherish the future.

जहाँ गड़बड़ हो, उस से कुछ बेहतर निकालो।

And I was taught some strange thing as a kid,

और ये बहुत कठिन था, मेरे लिए --

like, you've got to make something good out of something bad.

Epiphany hit me. Something hit me.

I started to say to my friends, neighbors, my sister.

ये टुकड़े मेरी फ़िल्म स्पुटनिक में इस्तेमाल हुई चीज़ों के हैं।

By the way, that's "Sputnik." I ran it last year.

"Sputnik" was downtown, the negative. It wasn't touched.

These are some pieces of things I used in my Sputnik feature film,

which opens in New York in two weeks

I called my sister. I called my neighbors. I said, "Come dig."

I came up with this idea: a life of bits and pieces,

It's the only copy I had. Pieces of it.

So I started to say, "Hey, man, you are too much!

You could cry about this." I really didn't.

I just instead said,

And I appreciate this moment

I mean, this was 16-millimeter safety film.

The negatives are gone.

That's my father's letter to me, telling me to

marry the woman I first married when I was 20.

She's still there. She's there this morning, actually.
