I'm an artist and a dad -- second time around.

ကျွန်တော်က ပန်းချီဆရာနဲ့ ဖခင်တစ်ယောက်၊ နှစ်ကြိမ်မြောက်ခါနီးပါ။

And I want to share with you my latest art project.

ကျွန်တော့ နောက်ဆုံး အနုပညာ ပရောဂျက်ကို သင်တို့နဲ့ မျှဝေချင်တယ်။

It's a children's book for the iPad.

ဒါက iPad အတွက် ကလေးစာအုပ်တစ်အုပ်ပါ။

It's a little quirky and silly.

နည်းနည်း တစ်မူထူးပြီး ကလေးကလားဆန်တယ်။

It's called "Pop-It,"

ဒါကို "Pop-It" လို့ ခေါ်ပါတယ်။

And it's about the things little kids do with their parents.

ကလေးငယ်လေးတွေ သူတို့ရဲ့ မိဘတွေနဲ့အတူ လုပ်ကြတာတွေ အကြောင်းပါ။

So this is about potty training --

ဒါက ရှူရှူးတည်တဲ့ လေ့ကျင့်ခန်းပါ

as most of you, I hope, know.

သင်တို့ အများစု သိတယ်လို့ မျှော်လင့်ပါတယ်။

You can tickle the rug.

ကော်ဇောကြမ်းကို တို့ထိလို့ရတယ်။

You can make the baby poop.

ကလေးငယ်ကို အီအီးပါအောင် လုပ်လို့ရတယ်။

You can do all those fun things.

ဒီပျော်စရာတွေ အားလုံး လုပ်လို့ရတယ်။

You can burst bubbles.

ပူဖောင်းတွေကို ဖောက်လို့ရတယ်။

You can draw, as everyone should.

ပုံဆွဲလို့ရတယ်၊ လူတိုင်း လုပ်မယ့်ဟာပေါ့။

But you know, I have a problem with children's books:

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကလေးစာအုပ်တွေနဲ့ ပြဿနာတစ်ခုရှိတယ်။

I think they're full of propaganda.

ဝါဒဖြန့်တာတွေနဲ့ ပြည့်နေတယ် ထင်တယ်။

At least an Indian trying to get one of these American books in Park Slope, forget it.

အနည်းဆုံး Park Slope တစ်အုပ် ဝယ်ဖို့ လုပ်တဲ့ အိန္ဒိယ​ေပေါ့၊

It's not the way I was brought up.

ဒါက ကျွန်တော်ကို ပျိုးထောင်ပေးခဲ့ပုံတော့ မဟုတ်ဘူး။

So I said, "I'm going to counter this with my own propaganda."

"ကိုယ်ပိုင်ဝါဒဖြန့်မှုနဲ့ တန်ပြန်မယ်"ပေါ့

If you notice carefully,

သင်တို့ သေသေချာချာ ကြည့်ရင်

it's a homosexual couple bringing up a child.

ကလေးတစ်ယောက်ကို ပျိုးထောင်နေတဲ့ အမျိုးသား လိင်တူဆက်ဆံတဲ့စုံတွဲပါ

You don't like it?

မကြိုက်ကြဘူးမို့လား။

Shake it, and you have a lesbian couple.

လှုပ်ခါလိုက်ပါ။ အမျိုးသမီး လိင်တူဆက်ဆံတဲ့ စုံတွဲတစ်တွဲကို ရတယ်၊

(Laughter)

Shake it, and you have a heterosexual couple.

လှုပ်ခါလိုက်ပါ။ လိင်မတူဆက်ဆံတဲ့ စုံတွဲတစ်တွဲကို ရတယ်၊

You know, I don't even believe in the concept of an ideal family.

သိတဲ့အတိုင်း စံမိသားစု အယူအဆကို ကျွန်တော် ယုံတောင် မယုံကြည်ဘူး။

I have to tell you about my childhood.

ကျွန်တော့ ကလေးဘဝအကြောင်း ပြောဖို့လိုတယ်။

I went to this very proper Christian school

သီလရှင်တွေ၊ ဖာသာ၊ ဘရာသာတွေ၊ စစ္စတာတွေ သင်ကြားပေးတဲ့

taught by nuns, fathers, brothers, sisters.

အင်မတန် ကောင်းမွန်တဲ့ ခရစ်ယာန် ကျောင်းကို တက်ခဲ့တယ်။

Basically, I was brought up to be a good Samaritan,

အဓိကက အများကိုကူညီသူဖြစ်ဖို့ ကျွန်တော့ကို

and I am.

ပျိုးထောင်ခဲ့တာပါ၊ ကျွန်တော် ဖြစ်ခဲ့တယ်။

And I'd go at the end of the day to a traditional Hindu house,

နောက်ဆုံးမှာ အစဉ်အလာ ဟိန္ဒူ အိမ်ကို ကျွန်တော်သွားမယ်၊

which was probably the only Hindu house

အစ္စလမ် အများဆုံးရှိတဲ့ ဝန်းကျင်ထဲက

in a predominantly Islamic neighborhood.

တစ်ခုတည်းသော ဟိန္ဒူ အိမ်ဖြစ်လောက်တယ်။

Basically, I celebrated every religious function.

အခြေခံကတော့ ဘာသာရေး အခမ်းအနားတိုင်းကို ကျွန်တော် ကျင်းပတယ်။

In fact, when there was a wedding in our neighborhood,

တကယ်ဆို အနီးဝန်းကျင်မှာ မင်္ဂလာဆောင်တစ်ခုရှိရင်

all of us would paint our houses for the wedding.

မင်္ဂလာဆောင်အတွက် အားလုံး ဆေးခြယ်ကြမယ်။

I remember we cried profusely

ကျွန်တော်တို့ အသည်းအသန် ငိုခဲ့တာ မှတ်မိတယ်

when the little goats we played with in the summer

နွေရာသီမှာ အတူ ကစားခဲ့တဲ့ ဆီတ်ကလေးတွေ

became biriani.

ဒံပေါက်ဖြစ်သွားတဲ့အခါမှာပေါ့။

(Laughter)

We all had to fast during Ramadan.

ရာမာဒန်ကာလမှာ အားလုံး ဥပုသ်စောင့်ခဲ့ရတယ်။

It was a very beautiful time.

But I must say,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကျွန်တော် ပြောရမှာက

I'll never forget, when I was 13 years old, this happened.

အသက် ၁၃ နှစ်မှာ ဒါဖြစ်ခဲ့တာကို ဘယ်တော့မှ မမေ့ဘူးဆိုတာပါ။

Babri Masjid --

Babri Masjid က

one of the most beautiful mosques in India,

အိန္ဒိယမှာ အလှဆုံး ဗလီတွေထဲက တစ်ခုပါ။

built by King Babur, I think, in the 16th century --

King Babur က ၁၆ ရာစုမှာ ဆောက်ခဲ့ပြီး ဟိန္ဒူ

was demolished by Hindu activists.

တက်ကြွလှုပ်ရှားသူတွေက ဖြိုခဲ့တယ်ထင်တယ်။

This caused major riots in my city.

ဒါက မြို့မှာ အဓိကရုဏ်းကြီးတွေ ဖြစ်စေတယ်။

And for the first time,

ပထမဆုံးအနေနဲ့

I was affected

by this communal unrest.

My little five-year-old kid neighbor

ကျွန်တော့ ငါးနှစ်သား ကလေး အိမ်နီးချင်းက

comes running in,

ပြေးဝင်လာပြီး

and he says, "Rags, Rags.

ပြောတာက "Rags, Rags ရေ၊

You know the Hindus are killing us Muslims. Be careful."

ဟိန္ဒူတွေက ကျွန်တော်တို့ မွတ်ဆလင်တွေကို သတ်နေတယ်။ သတိထား"တဲ့။

I'm like, "Dude, I'm Hindu."

ကျွန်တော်က "ကောင်လေး၊ ငါက ဟိန္ဒူကွ"။

(Laughter)

He's like, "Huh!"

သူက "ဟာ"

You know, my work is inspired

ကျွန်တော့လက်ရာကို ဒီလိုအဖြစ်တွေက

by events such as this.

စေ့ဆော်ပေးတာ သိကြပါတယ်။

Even in my gallery shows,

ပန်းချီပြပွဲတွေမှာတောင်

I try and revisit historic events

သမိုင်းဝင်အဖြစ်တွေကို ကြိုးစားကာပြန်လည်တယ်

like Babri Masjid,

ဥပမာ Babri Masjid ပေါ့

distill only its emotional residue

၎င်းရဲ့ စိတ်ပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာ အကြွင်းအကျန်ကိုပဲ

and image my own life.

အနှစ်ချုပ်ကာ ကိုယ်ပိုင်ဘဝကို ပုံဖော်တယ်။

Imagine history being taught differently.

သမိုင်းကို ကွဲပြားစွာ သင်တာကို စိတ်ကူးပါ။

Remember that children's book

လှုပ်ပြီး မိဘတွေရဲ့

where you shake and the sexuality of the parents change?

ဖိုမလက္ခဏာ ပြောင်းသွားတဲ့ ကလေးစာအုပ်တွေကို သတိရလား။

I have another idea.

နောက် စိတ်ကူးရှိတယ်။

It's a children's book about Indian independence --

ဒါက အိန္ဒိယ လွတ်လပ်ရေးအကြောင်း ကလေးစာအုပ်တစ်အုပ်ပါ။

very patriotic.

အင်မတန် မျိုးချစ်စိတ်ရှိတာပေါ့။

But when you shake it, you get Pakistan's perspective.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ဒါကို လှုပ်ရင် ပါကစ္စတန် ရှုထောင့်၊

Shake it again, and you get the British perspective.

ထပ်လှုပ်ပါ၊ ဗြိတိသျှ ရှုထောင့်ကို ရတယ်။

You have to separate fact from bias, right.

ဘက်လိုက်မှုကနေ အချက်ကို ခွဲခြားဖို့လိုတယ်။

Even my books on children

ကျွန်တော့ ကလေး စာအုပ်တွေတောင်

have cute, fuzzy animals.

ချစ်စရာ၊ အမွေးပွ အကောင်လေးတွေပါတယ်။

But they're playing geopolitics.

ဒါပေမဲ့ သူတိုက ပထဝီနိုင်ငံရေးကို ကစားနေတာ။

They're playing out Israel-Palestine,

အစ္စရေး ပါလက်စတိုင်း၊ အိန္ဒိယ ပါကစ္စတန်ကို

India-Pakistan.

သရုပ်ဖော်နေတာပါ။

You know, I'm making a very important argument.

အရေးပါတဲ့ ဆွေးနွေးချက်တစ်ခု လုပ်နေတာပါ။

And my argument [is]

ကျွန်တော့ ဆွေးနွေးချက်က

that the only way for us to teach creativity

ကျွန်တော်တို့အတွက် ဖန်တီးနိုင်မှုကို သင်ကြားဖို့ တစ်ခုတည်းသော နည်းလမ်းက

is by teaching children perspectives

ကလေးတွေကို အစောဆုံး အဆင့်မှာ ရှုထောင့်တွေ

at the earliest stage.

သင်ပေးခြင်းအားဖြင့်ပါ။

After all, children's books are manuals on parenting,

နောက်ဆုံး ကလေးစာအုပ်တွေဟာ မိဘ လက်စွဲတွေပါ

so you better give them children's books that teach them perspectives.

ကလေးတွေကို ရှုထောင့်တွေ သင်ဖို့ ကလေးစာအုပ်တွေ ပေးတာပိုကောင်းတယ်။

And conversely,

ဆန့်ကျင်ဘက်အားဖြင့်

only when you teach perspectives

ကလေးတစ်ယောက် စိတ်ကူးနိုင်မယ့်

will a child be able to imagine

ရှုထောင့်တွေကို သင်ကြားပေးပြီး

and put themselves in the shoes

သူတို့နဲ့ ကွဲပြားတဲ့ လူတွေရဲ့ နေရာကို

of someone who is different from them.

ဝင်ကြည့်ခိုင်းမှသာပါ။

I'm making an argument that art and creativity

အနုပညာနဲ့ ဖန်တီးမှုဟာ စာနာမှုမှာ ပဓာနကျတဲ့

are very essential tools in empathy.

ကိရိယာတွေဖြစ်တဲ့ အကြောင်း ယေဘုယျ ဆွေးနွေးချက်တစ်ခု လုပ်နေတာပါ။

You know, I can't promise my child

ကျွန်တော့ ကလေးကို ဘက်လိုက်မှုမရှိတဲ့

a life without bias --

ဘဝတစ်ခုကို ကတိပပေးနိုင်ဘူး။

we're all biased --

ကျွန်တော်တို့ အားလုံး ဘက်လိုက်ကြတယ်။

but I promise to bias my child with multiple perspectives.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကလေးကို ရှုထောင့်မျိုးစုံနဲ့ ဘက်လိုက်ဖို့တော့ ကတိပေးတယ်။
