I'm an artist and a dad -- second time around.

من هونەرمەندم و باوکم. دووەم جار

سوپاس بۆ تۆ.

And I want to share with you my latest art project.

دەمەوێت پڕۆژەی هونەریخۆمت لەگەڵ بەش بکەم

It's a children's book for the iPad.

کتێبی منداڵانە بۆ ئایپاد

It's a little quirky and silly.

ئەوە کەمێک نامۆ و بێئامە

It's called "Pop-It,"

پێی دەوترێت "پۆپ-ئەو"

And it's about the things little kids do with their parents.

منداڵی بچووک لەگەڵ دایک و باوکیان دەیکەن.

(Music)

(مۆسیقا)

So this is about potty training --

کەواتە ئەمە دەربارەی ڕاهێنانی بێمێشکە

as most of you, I hope, know.

وەک زۆربەی ئێوە، هیوادارم.

You can tickle the rug.

دەتوانی تلەی سەر مافوورەکە ببەیت.

You can make the baby poop.

دەتوانیت بە وینە بچووکەکە بکەیت.

You can do all those fun things.

دەتوانیت هەموو ئەو شتە خۆشانە بکەیت

You can burst bubbles.

دەتوانیت بڵق بتەقێنێت.

You can draw, as everyone should.

دەتوانیت وێنە بکێشیت، وەک هەموو کەسێک.

But you know, I have a problem with children's books:

من کێشەم لەگەڵ کتێبی منداڵاندا هەیە:

I think they're full of propaganda.

وابزانم پڕن لە پڕوپاگەندە.

At least an Indian trying to get one of these American books in Park Slope, forget it.

ھیندیەک ھەوڵیدا کتێبێکی ئەمریکی دەستبکەوئ لە پارک،لەبیریبکە

It's not the way I was brought up.

ئەوە ئەو شێوەیە نییە کە من هێنرامە سەرەوە

So I said, "I'm going to counter this with my own propaganda."

"من بە پڕوپاگەندەی خۆم ئەمە دەژمێرم.

If you notice carefully,

ئەگەر بە وردی تێبینیت ،کرد

it's a homosexual couple bringing up a child.

ئەوە دوو هاوسەرێکی هاوڕەگەزخوازن کە منداڵیان بۆ دەهێنێت.

You don't like it?

بەدڵت نییە؟

Shake it, and you have a lesbian couple.

بیلەرزە، وە جووتێکی هاورەگەزبازت هەیە.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

Shake it, and you have a heterosexual couple.

بیلەرزە، وە دوو ھاوڕەگەزبازت ھەیە.

You know, I don't even believe in the concept of an ideal family.

دەزانی،من باوەڕم بەبیرۆکەی خێزان نیە

I have to tell you about my childhood.

دەبێت باسی سەردەمی منداڵیم بکەم.

I went to this very proper Christian school

من چوم بۆ قوتابخانەیەکی بەناوبانگی مەسیحی

taught by nuns, fathers, brothers, sisters.

راھیبەکان فێری دەکردن،باوک،برا،خوشک.

Basically, I was brought up to be a good Samaritan,

هێنرامە سەرئەوەی ببمەسمارتاینێکی باش

and I am.

وە منیش.

And I'd go at the end of the day to a traditional Hindu house,

من لە کۆتایی ڕۆژ دەچمە ماڵی ھیندیەکۆنەکان

which was probably the only Hindu house

لەوانەیە تەنھا خانوی ھیندیەکان بێت

in a predominantly Islamic neighborhood.

دراوسێکان زۆربەی ئیسلامین.

Basically, I celebrated every religious function.

لە بنەڕەتدا،ھەمو ئاینێکم پیرۆز کرد

In fact, when there was a wedding in our neighborhood,

لەڕاستیدا کاتێک ئاھەنگی ھاسەرگیری لەگەڕەکێک ھەبوو،

all of us would paint our houses for the wedding.

لەسەر ھەموو خانوەکان وێنە دەکێشرا.

I remember we cried profusely

لە بیرمە زۆر گریام

when the little goats we played with in the summer

لەگەڵ بتەبچوکەکان یاریمان دەکرد لە ھاوین

became biriani.

بوو بە بریانی.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

We all had to fast during Ramadan.

ھەمومان دەبوایە لە ڕەمەزان بەڕۆژوبین.

It was a very beautiful time.

ئەوە کاتێکی زۆر جوانە

But I must say,

بەڵام،پێویستە بڵێم،

I'll never forget, when I was 13 years old, this happened.

ھەرگیزلە بیری ناکەم،کاتێک ١٣ ساڵ بوم ئەمە رویدا.

Babri Masjid --

بابری مەسجید--

one of the most beautiful mosques in India,

یەکێک لەجوانترین مزگەوتەکان لە ھیندستانە،

built by King Babur, I think, in the 16th century --

پاشا بابور بنیادی ناوە ،لە سەدەی شانزە--

was demolished by Hindu activists.

وێرانکرا لە لایەن چالاکوانی ھیندستان.

This caused major riots in my city.

بوە ھۆی ئاژاوەی گەورە لە شار

And for the first time,

بەڵام بۆ یەکەم جار،

I was affected

کاریگەریم لە سەر دروست بوو

by this communal unrest.

بەو نائارامیە گشیتیە.

My little five-year-old kid neighbor

دراوسئ بچوکە پێنج ساڵانەکام

comes running in,

کە دێتە ژورەوە،

and he says, "Rags, Rags.

دەڵێت ڕاگس،ڕاگس.

You know the Hindus are killing us Muslims. Be careful."

دەزانی ھیندیەکان ئێمەی موسڵمان دەکوژن .ئاگاداربە!

I'm like, "Dude, I'm Hindu."

من وەک،دودی وام،من ھیندم.

(Laughter)

(پێکەنین)

He's like, "Huh!"

وەک ئەوە وایە،ھھھ!

You know, my work is inspired

دەزانی ،کارەکەم ئیلھامی پێدەدرێت

by events such as this.

بە ڕوداوەکانی وەک ئەمە.

Even in my gallery shows,

تەنانەت لە پێشەنگاکەمدا،

I try and revisit historic events

ھەوڵ دەدەم روداوە مێژویەکان بەسەربکەمەوە

like Babri Masjid,

وەک بابری مەسجید،

distill only its emotional residue

تەنها لەکەمی ھەستی کار

and image my own life.

وە وێنەی ژیانی خۆم.

Imagine history being taught differently.

وێنەی مێژو جیاواز فێردەکرێت.

Remember that children's book

لەبیرتە کتێبی منداڵان

where you shake and the sexuality of the parents change?

کاتێک تۆ دەلەرزێنئ گۆرانی دایک و باوک؟

I have another idea.

بیرۆکەیەکی ترم ھەیە.

It's a children's book about Indian independence --

ئەوە کتێبێکی منداڵانە دەربارەی سەربەخۆی ھیندستان

very patriotic.

زۆر نیشتمانپەروەرانە.

But when you shake it, you get Pakistan's perspective.

کاتێک دەلەرزیت، روانگەی پاکستانەکان .

Shake it again, and you get the British perspective.

دوبارە دەیلەرزێنئ،وە ڕوانگەی بەریتانیەکان بە دەستدێنیت

(Applause)

You have to separate fact from bias, right.

دەبێت ڕاستیەکان جیابکەیەوە لایەنگری ڕاست.

Even my books on children

تەنانەت کتێبەکەم لە سەر منداڵ

have cute, fuzzy animals.

ئاژەڵی جوان،بێسەروبەرت ھەبێت.

But they're playing geopolitics.

بەڵام ئەوان یاری جیۆپۆلەتیک دەکەن.

They're playing out Israel-Palestine,

ئەوان یاری ئیسرائیل-فەلەستین دەکەن،

India-Pakistan.

ھیندستان،-پاکستان.

You know, I'm making a very important argument.

دەزانی،من گفتوگۆیەکی زۆر گرنگ دروستدەکەم.

And my argument [is]

وە گفتوگۆیەکەم

that the only way for us to teach creativity

کە تاکە ڕێگە بۆ ئێمە بۆ فێربون وداھێنان

is by teaching children perspectives

فێرکردنی تێروانینی منداڵان

at the earliest stage.

لە سەرەتاترین قۆناغدا.

After all, children's books are manuals on parenting,

دوای ھەمویان،

so you better give them children's books that teach them perspectives.

تۆ باشترە کتێبی منداڵانیان پێبدەکە کە فێری تێڕوانینیان دەکات

And conversely,

بە پێچەوانەوە،

only when you teach perspectives

تەنھا کاتێک تێروانینیان فێردەکەیت

will a child be able to imagine

منداڵ دەتوانێت خەیاڵ بکات

and put themselves in the shoes

خۆیان خستە ناوپێڵاوەکان

of someone who is different from them.

کەسێک جیاوازە لە وان.

I'm making an argument that art and creativity

گفتوگۆیەک دروست دەکەم لەسەر ھونەروداھێنان

are very essential tools in empathy.

ئامرازە زۆر گرنگەکانن لە هاودەردی.

You know, I can't promise my child

دەزانی،ناتوانم بەڵێن بە منداڵەکەم بدەم

a life without bias --

ژیانێک بەبێ لایەنگری--

we're all biased --

ئێمە هەموومان لایەنگرین--

but I promise to bias my child with multiple perspectives.

بەڵام بەڵێن دەدەم کە منداڵەکەم لایەنگری چەند ڕوانگەیەک بکەم
