you're actually using a form of telemetry

not so different

from the remote control device for your television.

It's just that, whereas that device

relies on pulses of infrared light,

بۆئه‌وه‌ی له‌گه‌ڵ حەزەکانتا بگونجێ

Languages are genes talking,

زمانه‌کان جیناتی قسه‌کردنن

getting things that they want.

ئه‌و شتانه‌ به‌ده‌ست ده‌هێنن که‌ ده‌یانه‌وێت

And just imagine the sense of wonder in a baby

ته‌نها ئەو هه‌ستە سەیرە له‌ منداڵدا بێنه‌ به‌رچاوی خۆت

when it first discovers that, merely by uttering a sound,

کاتێک بۆ یەکەم جار منداڵ ئه‌و هەستەی بۆ دێت، بۆت ده‌رده‌که‌وێت ته‌نها به‌وتنی ده‌نگێک

it can get objects to move across a room

ده‌توانێت شتێکی ده‌ست بکه‌وێت و به‌ژوره‌که‌دا بڕوات

as if by magic,

and maybe even into its mouth.

Now language's subversive power

ئێستا زمان هێزی ڕوخێنەرە

has been recognized throughout the ages

به‌درێژایی سەردەمەکان هه‌ستی پێکرابوو

in censorship, in books you can't read,

له‌ چاودێری، له‌ ناو کتێبه‌کاندا ناتوانن بیخوێننه‌وه‌

phrases you can't use

وه‌ ناتوانن ده‌سته‌واژه‌کان به‌کاربهێنن

and words you can't say.

وه‌ ئه‌و وشانه‌ی که‌ ناتوانن بیڵێن

In fact, the Tower of Babel story in the Bible

له‌ڕاستیدا، چیرۆکی تاوەرەکەی بابل له‌ کتێبی پیرۆزدا

is a fable and warning

ئه‌فسانه‌ و ئاگادارکه‌ره‌وه‌یه‌

about the power of language.

ده‌رباره‌ی هێزی زمان

According to that story, early humans developed the conceit

به‌گوێره‌ی ئه‌و چیرۆکه‌، مرۆڤەکانی پێشوو ده‌سته‌واژه‌ی زمانیان په‌ره‌ پێداوە

that, by using their language to work together,

ئه‌وه‌ بوو، زمانی خۆیان بەکارەدهێنا بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی به‌یه‌که‌وه‌ ئیش بکه‌ن

they could build a tower

ده‌یانتوانی بورجێک دروست بکه‌ن

that would take them all the way to heaven.

که‌ له‌وانه‌یه‌ بورجه‌که‌ له‌توانایدا ببوایه‌ هه‌مویان ببات بۆبەهەشت

Now God, angered at this attempt to usurp his power,

لە ئێستادا خوا توڕه‌ ده‌بوو له‌ هه‌وڵدانمان بۆ زه‌وت کردنی هێزه‌که‌ی

destroyed the tower,

بورجه‌که‌ی تێک ده‌شکاند و

and then to ensure

جەختی لەسەر ئەوە دەکردەوە

that it would never be rebuilt,

که‌ بورجه‌که‌ دەبێت وا بشکێت هه‌رگیز دوباره‌ دروست نه‌کرێته‌وه‌

he scattered the people by giving them different languages --

خوا خه‌ڵکانی پەرشوو بڵاو کردوه‌ و زمانی جیاوازی پێدان

confused them by giving them different languages.

وه‌سه‌ری لێ تێک داون بە پێدانی زمانی جیاواز

And this leads to the wonderful irony

ئەم پێشەنگیەش بوە هۆی جیاوازییەکی جوان

that our languages exist to prevent us from communicating.

زمانه‌کانمان بۆتە هۆی ئەوەی بتوانین پەیوەندی بەیەکترەوە بکەین

Even today,

هه‌تاوه‌کو ئه‌مڕۆش

we know that there are words we cannot use,

ئێمه‌ ده‌زانین که‌ زۆرێک لە وشه‌ هەن کە ناتوانین به‌کاریان بێنین

phrases we cannot say,

ده‌سته‌واژه‌کانیش که‌ ناتوانین دەریان ببڕین

because if we do so,

لەبەرئەوەی ئه‌گه‌ر ئێمه‌ ئه‌وه‌ بکه‌ین

we might be accosted, jailed,

له‌وانه‌یه‌ به‌رۆکمان بگرن، زیندانیمان بکەن

or even killed.

And all of this from a puff of air

هه‌موو ئه‌مانە له‌ده‌رکردنیکی هه‌واوه‌یه‌

emanating from our mouths.

که‌ له‌ ده‌ممان دێته‌ ده‌ره‌وه‌

Now all this fuss about a single one of our traits

ئێستا هه‌موو ئه‌م ژاوەژاوە ده‌رباره‌ی یه‌کێک لە خاسیەتەکانی ئێمەیە

tells us there's something worth explaining.

کە پێمان ده‌ڵێت شتێک هه‌یه‌ شایه‌نی ئەوەیە شیکردنه‌وه‌ ی بۆ بکرێت

And that is how and why

وه‌ ئه‌وشته‌ چۆن و بۆچی

did this remarkable trait evolve,

ئایا ئه‌مه‌ په‌ره‌سه‌ندنێکی نائاسایی خاسیەتەکە بوو

and why did it evolve

وه‌ بۆخاسیەتەکە په‌ره‌ی سه‌ند

only in our species?

ته‌نها له‌ڕه‌گه‌زی ئێمه‌دا

Now it's a little bit of a surprise

ئێستا ئه‌مه‌ که‌مێک سه‌رسوڕهێنه‌ره‌

that to get an answer to that question,

بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی وەڵامێک بۆ ئه‌م پرسیاره‌ ده‌ست بکه‌وێت

we have to go to tool use

پێویسته‌ له‌سه‌رمان بچین ئامێر به‌کاربهێنین

in the chimpanzees.

له‌ شەمپانزییەکان

Now these chimpanzees are using tools,

ئێستا ئه‌م شەمپانزیانه‌ ئامێر به‌کارده‌هێنن

and we take that as a sign of their intelligence.

ئێمه‌ به‌کارهێنانی ئه‌م ئامێرانه‌ له‌ لایان شەمپانزیه‌کانه‌وه‌ به‌ نیشانه‌ی زیره‌کیان داده‌نێین

But if they really were intelligent,

به‌ڵام ئه‌گه‌ر شەمپانزیەکان به‌ڕاستی زیره‌ک بونایه‌

why would they use a stick to extract termites from the ground

بۆچی چیلکەیان بەکاردەهێنا بۆ ئەوەی مێروولە سپیەکان دەربهێنن لە زەوی

rather than a shovel?

ئەی بۆ خاکەنازیان بەکارنەهێناوە؟

And if they really were intelligent,

ئه‌گه‌ر به‌ڕاستی زیره‌ک بونایه‌

why would they crack open nuts with a rock?

بۆ شەمپانزیه‌کان گوێزی شکاو به‌به‌رد ئه‌شکێنن؟

Why wouldn't they just go to a shop and buy a bag of nuts

ئه‌گه‌ر شەمپانزیه‌کان زیره‌ک بن بۆ ناچن بۆ دوکانێک و عه‌لاگه‌یه‌ک گوێز بکڕن

that somebody else had already cracked open for them?

که‌ که‌سێکی تر پێشتر گوێزه‌کانی شکاندوه‌ بۆیان؟

Why not? I mean, that's what we do.

بۆ نا؟ مه‌به‌ستم ئه‌وه‌یه‌،لەبەرئەوە ئێمەش وادەکەین

Now the reason the chimpanzees don't do that

ئێستا هۆکاری ئه‌وه‌ی که‌ شەمپانزیه‌کان ئەوە ناکەن

is that they lack what psychologists and anthropologists call

ئه‌وه‌یه‌ که‌ ده‌رونناسەکان و مرۆڤناسەکان پێی ده‌ڵێن که‌م و کوڕی

social learning.

له‌فێربونی کۆمه‌ڵایه‌تی

They seem to lack the ability

دیاره‌ ئه‌وان که‌موکوڕیان له‌توانادا هه‌یه‌

to learn from others

تاکو لە کەسانی ترەوە فێرببن

by copying or imitating

به‌لاسایی کردنه‌وه‌ی یان چاولێکردن

or simply watching.

یان ته‌نها به‌سه‌یرکردن

As a result,

وه‌ک ده‌رئه‌نجامێک

they can't improve on others' ideas

شەمپانزیه‌کان ناتوانن که‌ڵک وه‌ر گرن له‌بیرۆکه‌ی که‌سانی تر

or learn from others' mistakes --

یان له‌ هه‌ڵه‌ی که‌سانی تره‌وه‌ فێربن

benefit from others' wisdom.

یاخود سود له‌ ژیری که‌سانی تره‌وه‌ وه‌ربگرن

And so they just do the same thing

له‌به‌رئه‌مه‌یه‌ شەمپانزیه‌کان هه‌مان شت دەکەنەوە

over and over and over again.

دوباره‌ و دوباره‌ و دوباره‌

In fact, we could go away for a million years and come back

له‌ ڕاستیدا، ده‌توانین بۆ ملیۆنه‌ها ساڵ لەمەوپێش بڕۆین و بگه‌ڕێینه‌وه‌

and these chimpanzees would be doing the same thing

Now this may sound arrogant, or even full of hubris.

ئێستا له‌وانه‌یه‌ ئه‌مه‌ لوت به‌رزی بێت، یاخود شانازی به‌خۆوه‌ کردنێکی ته‌واو بێت

How do we know this?

ئێمه‌ چۆن بزانین ئه‌مه‌ وایە؟

Because this is exactly what our ancestors, the Homo erectus, did.

چونکە ئەمە بەتەواوەتی ئەوەیە که‌ باو و باپیرانمان لە مێژەوە کردویانە

These upright apes

ئه‌م مه‌یمونانه‌ی کە لێرەدا وەستاون

evolved on the African savanna

له‌ ساڤانا له‌ ئه‌فه‌ریقا په‌ره‌ی سه‌ند

about two million years ago,

دوو ملیۆن ساڵ له‌مه‌وبه‌ر

and they made these splendid hand axes

that fit wonderfully into your hands.

کە بەشێوەیەکی زۆر جوان دەگونجێت بگیرێت بەدەستەوە

But if we look at the fossil record,

به‌ڵام ئه‌گه‌ر سه‌یری تۆماری پاشماوه‌ی بەبەردبوەکان بکەین

we see that they made the same hand axe

ده‌بینین که‌ ئه‌وانیش هه‌مان ده‌سکی ته‌وریان دروست کردوه‌

over and over and over again

دوباره‌ و دوباره‌ ودوباره‌

for one million years.

بۆ یه‌ک ملیۆن ساڵ

You can follow it through the fossil record.

ده‌توانن شوێنیان بکه‌ون به‌نێو تۆماری بەبەردبوەکان

Now if we make some guesses about how long Homo erectus lived,

ئێستا ئه‌گه‌ر ئێمه‌ هه‌ندێک خه‌مڵاندن بکه‌ین که‌ بۆماوه‌ی چه‌ند ئه‌و مرۆڤانه‌ی ملیۆنه‌ها ساڵ له‌مه‌و به‌ر هه‌بوون ژیاون

what their generation time was,

that's about 40,000 generations

of parents to offspring, and other individuals watching,

له‌ دایک و باوکه‌وه‌ بۆ وه‌چه‌، وە بەسەیرکردنی تاکەکەسی

in which that hand axe didn't change.

بۆمان دەردەکەوێت ده‌سکی ته‌وره‌که‌ گۆڕانی به‌سه‌ردا نه‌هاتبوو

It's not even clear

هه‌تاوه‌کو ئه‌مه‌ ڕوون نیه‌

that our very close genetic relatives, the Neanderthals,

که‌ نزیکترین خزمه‌ ڕه‌چه‌ڵه‌کیه‌کانمان، نیارده‌رتاڵیه‌کانە

had social learning.

فێربوونی کۆمه‌ڵایه‌تیان هه‌بوو

Sure enough, their tools were more complicated

than those of Homo erectus,

Okay, so what this tells us

is that, contrary to the old adage,

"monkey see, monkey do,"

the surprise really is

that all of the other animals

really cannot do that -- at least not very much.

We can learn by watching other people

We can then choose, from among a range of options,

the best one.

We can benefit from others' ideas.

We can build on their wisdom.

And as a result, our ideas do accumulate,

and our technology progresses.

And this cumulative cultural adaptation,

as anthropologists call

this accumulation of ideas,

is responsible for everything around you

all are a result

of cumulative cultural adaptation.

Now to many commentators,

ئێستا بۆ زۆرێک له‌ لێدوانەکان

cumulative cultural adaptation, or social learning,

ڕاهاتنی کەڵەکەبونی که‌لتوری، یان فێربونی کۆماڵه‌یاتی

is job done, end of story.

کارێکه‌ ته‌واو کراوه‌، وه‌ ئه‌مه‌ کۆتایی چیرۆکه‌که‌یه‌

Our species can make stuff,

therefore we prospered in a way that no other species has.

In fact, we can even make the "stuff of life" --

as I just said, all the stuff around us.

But in fact, it turns out

that some time around 200,000 years ago,

Because our acquisition of social learning

would create a social and evolutionary dilemma,

the resolution of which, it's fair to say,

would determine not only the future course of our psychology,

is, it turns out, that social learning is visual theft.

If I can learn by watching you,

I can steal your best ideas,

ئه‌گه‌ر بتوانم چاودێری و بکه‌م چ فێڵێک به‌کارده‌هێنی بۆگرتنی ماسیه‌ک

or I can watch how you flake your hand axe

یاخود ده‌توانم چاودێریت بکه‌م که‌چۆن پارچه‌ی ده‌سکی ته‌وره‌که‌ لێده‌که‌یته‌وه‌

to make it better,

بۆئه‌وه‌ی ده‌سکه‌که‌ باشتر بکه‌ی

or if I follow you secretly to your mushroom patch,

یان ئه‌گه‌ر به‌نهێنیه‌وه‌ به‌دواتابێم بۆئه‌و پارچه‌ زه‌ویه‌ و که‌ قارچکی تێدایه‌

I can benefit from your knowledge and wisdom and skills,

and maybe even catch that fish

Social learning really is visual theft.

And in any species that acquired it,

it would behoove you

to hide your best ideas,

lest somebody steal them from you.

And so some time around 200,000 years ago,

our species confronted this crisis.

And we really had only two options

له‌ڕاستیدا ته‌نها دوو هه‌ڵبژاردنمان هه‌بوو

for dealing with the conflicts

بۆئه‌وه‌ی ڕێبکه‌وین له‌گه‌ڵ ئه‌م ناکۆکیانه‌دا

that visual theft would bring.

که‌ له‌وانه‌یه‌ دزینی بیرۆکه‌ ئه‌م ناکۆکیانه‌مان بۆ بێنێت

One of those options

یه‌کێک له‌و هه‌ڵبژاردنانە

was that we could have retreated

ئه‌وه‌ بوو که‌ ده‌مانتوانی بگه‌ڕێینه‌ دواوه‌

into small family groups.

بۆ پۆلی خێزانه‌ بچوکه‌کان

Because then the benefits of our ideas and knowledge

له‌به‌رئه‌وه‌ی دواتر سودی بیرۆکه‌ و زانیاریه‌کانمان

would flow just to our relatives.

هه‌ڵده‌قوڵێت بۆ خزمه‌کانمان

Had we chosen this option,

ئێمه‌ ئه‌م هه‌ڵبژارده‌یه‌مان هه‌ڵبژاردوه‌

sometime around 200,000 years ago,

٢٠٠،٠٠٠هەزار ساڵ له‌مه‌وبه‌ر

we would probably still be living like the Neanderthals were

له‌وانه‌بوو هێشتا وه‌ک و نیارده‌رتاڵیه‌کان ژیانمان بەسەربردایە

when we first entered Europe 40,000 years ago.

کاتێک بۆ یه‌که‌م جار پێش (٤٠،٠٠٠) هەزار ساڵ له‌مه‌وبه‌ر چوینه‌ ئه‌وروپاوه‌

And this is because in small groups

ئه‌مه‌ له‌به‌رئه‌وه‌ی له‌پۆله‌ بچوکه‌کاندا

there are fewer ideas, there are fewer innovations.

بیرۆکه‌کان کەمترن، وه‌ داهێنان کەمترە

And small groups are more prone to accidents and bad luck.

وه‌ پۆله‌ بچوکه‌کان زیاتر نزیکن بۆ ئەوەی ڕوبەڕوی به‌ختی خراپ و ڕوداوه‌کان ببنەوە

So if we'd chosen that path,

ئه‌گه‌ر ئیمه‌ ئه‌م ڕێچکه‌یه‌مان هه‌ڵبژاردایه‌

our evolutionary path would have led into the forest --

ڕێچکه‌ په‌ره‌سه‌ندوه‌کانمان پێشڕه‌وی ده‌کردین به‌ره‌و دارستان

and been a short one indeed.

له‌ڕاستیدا ده‌بوو بەیه‌ک ڕێچکه‌ی کورت

The other option we could choose

هه‌ڵبژاردنەکه‌ی تر که‌ ده‌مانتوانی هه‌ڵیبژێرین

was to develop the systems of communication

هه‌ڵبژاردنی به‌ره‌و پێش بردنی سیسته‌می په‌یوه‌ندی کردن بوو

that would allow us to share ideas

که‌ ڕێگای پێده‌داین بۆ به‌شداری پێکردنی بیرۆکه‌کانمان

and to cooperate amongst others.

وه‌ بۆ هاوکاری کردن لەگەڵ ئەوانی تردا

Choosing this option would mean

هه‌ڵبژاردنی ئه‌م هه‌ڵبژارده‌یه‌ مانای ئه‌وه‌یه‌

that a vastly greater fund of accumulated knowledge and wisdom

که‌ قەبارەیەکی ئێجگار زۆر گه‌وره‌ی زانیاری و ژیری که‌ڵه‌که‌بوو

would become available to any one individual

به‌ده‌ست ده‌هات بۆ هه‌رتاکه‌ که‌سێک

than would ever arise from within an individual family

بەبەراورد لەگەڵ هه‌ر تاکێکی ناو خێزان

or an individual person on their own.

یاخود هه‌ر تاکه‌ که‌سێک کە خۆی خاوەنی ئەوە بێت

Well, we chose the second option,

که‌واته‌، هه‌ڵبژاردنی دووه‌م هه‌ڵده‌بژێرین

and language is the result.

وه‌ ئه‌نجامی هه‌ڵبژاردنه‌که‌ زمانه‌

Language evolved to solve the crisis

زمان به‌ره‌و پێشچوو بۆ چاره‌سه‌رکردنی قه‌یرانه‌که‌

of visual theft.

قه‌یرانی دزینی بیرۆکه

Language is a piece of social technology

زمان به‌شێکە لە ته‌کنه‌لۆژیای کۆمه‌ڵ

for enhancing the benefits of cooperation --

بۆ په‌رەسه‌ندنی سوده‌کانی هاوکاریکردن

for reaching agreements, for striking deals

بۆ گه‌یشنت به‌ڕێکه‌وتنه‌کان، بۆسه‌رنج ڕاکێشانی ڕێککه‌وتنه‌کان

and for coordinating our activities.

وه‌ بۆ هاوتاکردنی چالاکیه‌کانمان

And you can see that, in a developing society

ئێوه‌ ده‌توانن ئه‌وه‌ ببینن، له‌ کۆمه‌ڵگایه‌کی گەشەسەندودا

that was beginning to acquire language,

ئەوە سه‌ره‌تایه‌ک بوو بۆ به‌ده‌ست هێنانی زمان

not having language

نه‌بوونی زمان

would be a like a bird without wings.

وه‌ک و باڵنده‌یه‌کی بێ باڵ ده‌بێت

Just as wings open up this sphere of air

هه‌روه‌ک و باڵه‌کان مه‌ودای هه‌وای کردۆته‌وه‌

for birds to exploit,

بۆ باڵنده‌کان بۆ به‌کارهێنانی ئامانجی خۆیان

language opened up the sphere of cooperation

زمان مه‌ودای هاریکاریکردنی یه‌کتری کردۆته‌وه‌

for humans to exploit.

بۆ مرۆڤه‌کان بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی ئامانجی خۆیانیان پێ بهێننه‌دی

And we take this utterly for granted,

به‌ته‌واوی ئێمە زمان بۆ پێدانی خواستێک داده‌نێین

because we're a species that is so at home with language,

له‌به‌رئه‌وه‌ی ئێمه‌ له‌و ڕه‌گه‌زانه‌ین کە تاکو ماڵیشەوە زمانمان لەگەڵدایە

but you have to realize

بەڵام دەبێت ئەوە بزانین

that even the simplest acts of exchange that we engage in

تەنانەت ساده‌ترین نواندنەکانی گۆڕانکاری لە ئێمەدا

are utterly dependent upon language.

به‌ته‌واوه‌تی پشتی به‌ستوه‌ به‌زمانه‌وه‌

And to see why, consider two scenarios

بۆئه‌وه‌ی بزانن بۆچی، ڕه‌چاوی دوو سیناریۆ بکه‌ن

from early in our evolution.

هەر لە کاتی زووی پەرەسەندنی ئێمەوە

Let's imagine that you are really good

با ئەوە بهێنینە پێش چاوی خۆمان که‌ ئێوه‌ به‌ڕاستی باشن

at making arrowheads,

له‌ دروستی کردنی سه‌ری تیردا

but you're hopeless at making the wooden shafts

به‌ڵام بێهیوان له‌ دروستکردنی ڕم و تیری داردا

with the flight feathers attached.

له‌گه‌ڵ پێوه‌ره‌کان و کەرەستەکانی فڕیندا

Two other people you know are very good at making the wooden shafts,

دووکه‌سی تر که‌ زۆر باشن له‌دروست کردنی قه‌دی تیر و ڕمدا

but they're hopeless at making the arrowheads.

به‌ڵام بێهیوان له‌دروست کردنی سه‌ری تیر

So what you do is --

که‌واته‌ ئه‌وه‌ی ئێوه‌ ده‌یکه‌ن ئه‌وه‌یه‌

one of those people has not really acquired language yet.

له‌ڕاستیدا، یه‌کێک له‌و دوو که‌سه‌ هێشتا زمانی به‌ده‌ست نه‌هێناوه‌

And let's pretend the other one is good at language skills.

باوای دابنێین که‌سه‌که‌ی تر باشه‌ له‌به‌هره‌کانی زماندا

So what you do one day is you take a pile of arrowheads,

ئەوەی پێویستە ڕۆژێک بیکه‌یت ئه‌وه‌یه‌ که‌ ڕێژه‌یه‌کی زۆر سه‌ری تیر ببەی

and you walk up to the one that can't speak very well,

بڕۆی بۆ لای ئه‌و که‌سه‌ی که‌ زۆر باش ناتوانێت قسه‌ بکات

and you put the arrowheads down in front of him,

وه‌ سه‌ری تیره‌کان له‌به‌رده‌می ئه‌و که‌سه‌دا داده‌نێیت

hoping that he'll get the idea that you want to trade your arrowheads

هیوای ئه‌وه‌ ده‌خوازی که‌ ئەو بیرۆکه‌ی بۆبێت که‌ تۆ ده‌ته‌وێت، تاکو بتوانیت بازرگانی به‌سه‌ری تیره‌کانته‌وه‌ بکه‌یت

for finished arrows.

بۆ ئه‌وه‌ی تیره‌کان تەواو بکات

But he looks at the pile of arrowheads, thinks they're a gift,

به‌ڵام ئه‌و که‌سه‌ سه‌یری ڕێژه‌ زۆره‌که‌ی سه‌ره‌ تیره‌کان ده‌کات. واده‌زانێت ئەوانە دیارین

picks them up, smiles and walks off.

سه‌ره‌ تیره‌کان هه‌ڵده‌گرێت و پێده‌که‌نێت، و ده‌ڕوات

Now you pursue this guy, gesticulating.

ئێستا تۆ دوای ئه‌م که‌سه‌ ده‌که‌ویت،دەست دەکەیت بە ئیشارەت کردن

A scuffle ensues and you get stabbed

له‌ ئه‌نجامدا شەڕێک ڕووده‌دات و چه‌قۆیه‌کت لێ ده‌درێت

with one of your own arrowheads.

به‌یه‌کێک له‌ سه‌ره‌ تیره‌کانی خۆت

Okay, now replay this scene now, and you're approaching the one who has language.

باشه‌، ئێستا هه‌مان دیمه‌ن دووبارە بکەرەوە، تۆ له‌یه‌کێک نزیک ده‌بیته‌وه‌ که‌ زمانی هه‌یه‌

You put down your arrowheads and say,

سه‌ره‌تیره‌کان داده‌نێیت و ده‌ڵێیت

"I'd like to trade these arrowheads for finished arrows. I'll split you 50/50."

ده‌مه‌وێت بازرگانی به‌م سه‌ره‌ تیرانه‌وه‌ بکه‌م بۆئه‌وه‌ی تیره‌کانی پێ ته‌واو بکرێت. به‌شی دەکەم لەگەڵتا ٥٠ بە ٥٠

The other one says, "Fine. Looks good to me.

که‌سه‌که‌ی تر ده‌ڵێت، باشه‌، وادیارە باشە بۆ من

We'll do that."

که‌واته‌ بەو شێوەیە دەکەین

Now the job is done.

ئێستا کارەکە کۆتایی پێهات

Once we have language,

جارێکی تر زمانمان هەیە

we can put our ideas together and cooperate

ده‌توانین به‌یه‌که‌وه‌ بیرۆکه‌کانمان دابڕێژین و هاریکاری یه‌کتر بکه‌ین

to have a prosperity

بۆئه‌وه‌ی خۆشگوزه‌رانی هه‌بێت

that we couldn't have before we acquired it.

که‌ ئێمه‌ پێشتر ئه‌و خۆشگوزه‌رانیەمان نه‌بوه‌ که‌ ئێستا به‌ده‌ستمان هیناوه‌

And this is why our species

وه‌ له‌به‌رئه‌م هۆیه‌ ڕه‌گه‌زه‌کانی ئێمه‌

has prospered around the world

خۆش گوزه‌ران بوون له‌هه‌موو جیهاندا

while the rest of the animals

له‌کاتێکدا گیانله‌به‌ره‌کانی دیکه‌

sit behind bars in zoos, languishing.

له‌ پشت مه‌یخانه‌ی باخچه‌ی ئاژه‌ڵانه‌وه‌ دانیشتون، به‌سستی و لاوازی

That's why we build space shuttles and cathedrals

له‌به‌رئه‌وه‌یه‌ ئامێری هاتوچۆکردن بە بۆشایدا و کڵێسای گه‌وره‌ دروست ده‌که‌ین

while the rest of the world sticks sticks into the ground

له‌ کاتێکدا هه‌موو جیهان به‌زه‌وییه‌وه‌ نوساوه‌

to extract termites.

بۆ دەرهێنانی مێروولە سپیەکان

All right, if this view of language

زۆرباشه‌، ئه‌گه‌ر ئه‌مه‌ دیمه‌نی زمان بێت

and its value

وە ئەوە بەهاکەی بێت

in solving the crisis of visual theft is true,

له‌ چاره‌سه‌رکردنی قه‌یرانی دزینی بیرۆکه‌دا ڕاسته‌

any species that acquires it

هه‌ر ڕه‌گه‌زێک که‌ به‌ده‌ستی ده‌هێنێت

should show an explosion of creativity and prosperity.

پێویسته‌ ته‌قینه‌وەیەکی توانای داهێنان و خۆشگوزه‌رانی نیشان بدات

And this is exactly what the archeological record shows.

به‌دڵنیاییه‌وه‌ ئه‌مه‌ تۆماره‌ شوێنه‌واریه‌کان ده‌ریده‌خات بۆمان

If you look at our ancestors,

ئه‌گه‌ر سه‌یری باو باپیرانمان بکه‌ین

the Neanderthals and the Homo erectus, our immediate ancestors,

نیارده‌رتاڵه‌کان و ئه‌وڕه‌گه‌زانه‌ی ملیۆنه‌ها ساڵ له‌مه‌وبه‌ر پێش مرۆڤ ژیاون، نزیکترین باو باپیرانمانن

they're confined to small regions of the world.

ئه‌و مرۆڤانه‌ به‌ندکراون له‌ هه‌رێمی بچوکدا لە جیهان

But when our species arose

به‌ڵام کاتێک ڕه‌گه‌زه‌کانی ئێمه‌ په‌یدا بوون

about 200,000 years ago,

نزیکه‌ی (٢٠٠،٠٠٠) هەزار ساڵ له‌مه‌وبه‌ر

sometime after that we quickly walked out of Africa

هه‌ندێ کات دوای ئەوە ئێمە بەخێرایی چوینه‌ ده‌ره‌وه‌ی ئه‌فه‌ریقا

and spread around the entire world,

وه‌ بڵاوبوینه‌وه‌ به‌هه‌موو جیهاندا

occupying nearly every habitat on Earth.

وه‌ به‌نزیکه‌یی له‌ هه‌موو شوێنێکی سه‌رزه‌ویدا نیشته‌ جێبووین

Now whereas other species are confined

ئێستا ڕه‌گه‌زه‌کانی تر به‌ندکراون

to places that their genes adapt them to,

بۆئه‌و شوێنانه‌ی که‌ له‌گه‌ڵ جیناتەکانی خۆیاندا بگونجێن

with social learning and language,

له‌گه‌ڵ فێربوونی کۆمه‌ڵایه‌تی و زمان

we could transform the environment

ئێمه‌ ده‌توانین ژینگه‌ بگۆڕین

to suit our needs.

بۆئه‌وه‌ی له‌گه‌ڵ پێداویستیه‌کانماندا بگونجێت

And so we prospered in a way

که‌واته‌ ئێمه‌ به‌ڕێگایه‌ک سه‌رکه‌وتوبوین

that no other animal has.

که‌هیچ جۆرێکی تری ئاژەڵ به‌م شێوه‌یه‌ سه‌رکه‌وتوو نه‌بوون

Language really is

زمانی ڕاستی

the most potent trait that has ever evolved.

به‌هێزترین نیشانه‌یه‌ که‌ هه‌تا ئێستا په‌ره‌ی سه‌ندبێت

It is the most valuable trait we have

زمان به‌هاترین نیشانه‌یه‌ که‌ ئێمه‌ هه‌مانه‌

for converting new lands and resources

بۆ گۆڕینی زه‌ویه‌ تازه‌کان و داهاته‌کان

into more people and their genes

بۆ خه‌ڵکی زیاتر و بۆجیناتەکانیان

that natural selection has ever devised.

که‌ هه‌ڵبژاردنی سروشتی پڵانی بۆ داناوه‌

Language really is

زمانی ڕاستی ئەوەیە

the voice of our genes.

ده‌نگی جیناتەکانی ئێمه‌یه‌

Now having evolved language, though,

ئێستا زمانی پەرەسەندومان هەیە، هه‌رچه‌نده‌

we did something peculiar,

ئێمه‌ شتێکی تایبه‌تمان کرد

even bizarre.

تەنانەت شتێکی سه‌یرمان کرد

As we spread out around the world,

ئێمه‌ بڵاوبووینه‌وه‌ به‌ده‌وری جیهاندا

we developed thousands of different languages.

هه‌زاره‌ها زمانی جیاوازمان گه‌شه‌ پێکرد

Currently, there are about seven or 8,000

به‌شێوه‌یه‌کی گشتی، زیاتر له‌ حه‌وت یاخود هه‌شت هه‌زار

different languages spoken on Earth.

زمانی جیاوازی قسه‌کردن له‌سه‌ر زه‌وی هه‌یه‌

Now you might say, well, this is just natural.

ئێستا له‌وانه‌یه‌ بڵێیت، باشه‌، هه‌بوونی ئه‌م زمانانه‌ سروشتیه‌

As we diverge, our languages are naturally going to diverge.

هەروەک چۆن ئێمه‌ جیاوازین، زمانه‌کانیشمان به‌شێوه‌یه‌کی سروشتی جیاواز ده‌بێت

But the real puzzle and irony

به‌ڵام مەتەڵە ڕاستیەکەو گاڵتەکە

is that the greatest density of different languages on Earth

ئه‌وه‌یه‌ که‌ گه‌وره‌ترین چڕی جیاوازی زمانه‌کان له‌سه‌ر زه‌وی هه‌یه‌

is found where people are most tightly packed together.

دۆزراوه‌ته‌وه‌ به‌زۆری خه‌ڵک له‌ کوێ به‌یه‌که‌وه‌ کۆده‌بنه‌وه‌

If we go to the island of Papua New Guinea,

ئه‌گه‌ر بچین بۆ دورگه‌ی (پاپوا) له‌ نیو غینیا

we can find about 800 to 1,000

ده‌توانین نزیکه‌ی (٨٠٠) بۆ (١٠٠٠) زمان بدۆزینه‌وه‌

distinct human languages,

له‌ زمانی جیاوازی مرۆڤ

different human languages,

زمانه‌ جیاوازه‌کانی مرۆڤ

spoken on that island alone.

که‌ به‌ته‌نها له‌دورگه‌یه‌کدا ئه‌و زمانه‌ جیاوازانه‌ قسه‌ی پێده‌کرێت

There are places on that island

چه‌نده‌ها شوێن هه‌یه‌ له‌سه‌ر ئه‌و دورگه‌یه‌

where you can encounter a new language

دەگەیت بە زمانێکی تازە

every two or three miles.

له‌هه‌ر دوو یاخود سێ میلێکدا

Now, incredible as this sounds,

ئێستا، وه‌ک ئه‌م ده‌نگانه‌ سه‌یره‌

I once met a Papuan man, and I asked him if this could possibly be true.

جارێکیان چاوم که‌وت به‌ پیاوێکی (پاپوان)ی، پرسیارم لێکرد ئه‌گه‌ر ئه‌مه‌ ڕاست بێت

And he said to me, "Oh no.

ئه‌و پێی وتم، ئۆو نه‌خێر

They're far closer together than that."

له‌و دووریه‌ که‌متریش زمانی جیاواز هه‌یه‌

And it's true; there are places on that island

ئه‌وه‌ ڕاسته‌ چه‌نده‌ها شوێن هه‌یه‌ له‌سه‌ر ئه‌و دورگه‌یه‌

where you can encounter a new language in under a mile.

له‌ژێر هه‌موو میلێکدا زمانێکی تازه‌ت توش دەبێت

And this is also true of some remote oceanic islands.

هه‌روه‌ها ئه‌مه‌ ڕاسته‌ بۆ هه‌ندێک له‌دورگه‌ دەریاییه‌ دوورەکان

And so it seems that we use our language,

بۆیە وادەردەکەوێت کە ئێمە زمانی خۆمان بەکاربهێنین

not just to cooperate,

نه‌ک ته‌نها بۆ هاریکاریکردنی یه‌کتر

but to draw rings around our cooperative groups

به‌ڵکو بۆ کێشانی زنجیرەکان به‌ده‌وری گروپه‌ هه‌ره‌وەزیەکاندا

and to establish identities,

بۆ دامه‌زراندنی هاوتوخمه‌کانمان

and perhaps to protect our knowledge and wisdom and skills

وه‌ له‌وانه‌یه‌ بۆ پارێزگاری کرن له‌زانیاری و ژیری و به‌هره‌کانمان

from eavesdropping from outside.

له‌ گوێگرتن بەشاراوەیی له‌ ده‌ره‌وه‌

And we know this

ئێمه‌ ئه‌وه‌ ده‌زانین

because when we study different language groups

له‌به‌رئه‌وه‌ی کاتێک گروپە جیاوازەکانی زمان ده‌خوێنین

and associate them with their cultures,

وه‌ بەیەکیانەوە ده‌به‌ستین له‌گه‌ڵ که‌لتوره‌کاندا

we see that different languages

زمانە جیاوازەکان دەبینین

slow the flow of ideas between groups.

هه‌ڵقوڵانی هێواشی بیرۆکه‌کان له‌نێوان گروپه‌کاندا

They slow the flow of technologies.

ئەوانە دەبێتە هه‌ڵقوڵانی هێواش له‌ ته‌کنه‌لۆژیاکان

And they even slow the flow of genes.

هه‌روه‌ها ده‌بێته‌ هۆی هه‌ڵقوڵانی هێواشی جیناتەکان

Now I can't speak for you,

And when you plot those friendship links

by their latitude and longitude,

it literally draws a map of the world.

Our modern world is communicating

with itself and with each other

more than it has

at any time in its past.

And that communication, that connectivity around the world,

that globalization

now raises a burden.

Because these different languages

impose a barrier, as we've just seen,

to the transfer of goods and ideas

and technologies and wisdom.

And they impose a barrier to cooperation.

And nowhere do we see that more clearly

than in the European Union,

whose 27 member countries

The European Union

is now spending over one billion euros annually

Now think of the absurdity of this situation.

If 27 individuals

from those 27 member states

sat around table, speaking their 23 languages,

some very simple mathematics will tell you

to anticipate all the pairwise possibilities.

The European Union employs a permanent staff

in this modern, globalized world

we can really afford to have all these different languages.

To put it this way, nature knows no other circumstance

بەگرتنە بەری ئەم ڕێگایە، سروشت ده‌زانێت نه‌ک بارودۆخی دیکه‌

in which functionally equivalent traits coexist.

ئەو سیفاتانەی تیایدایە دادپەروەرانەیە

One of them always drives the other extinct.

And we see this in the inexorable march

towards standardization.

There are lots and lots of ways of measuring things --

weighing them and measuring their length --

but the metric system is winning.

There are lots and lots of ways of measuring time,

but a really bizarre base 60 system

known as hours and minutes and seconds

is nearly universal around the world.

There are many, many ways

of imprinting CDs or DVDs,

but those are all being standardized as well.

And you can probably think of many, many more

in your own everyday lives.

And so our modern world now

که‌واته‌ جیهانی مۆدێرنی ئێستای ئێمه‌

is confronting us with a dilemma.

And it's the dilemma

کێشەکە ئه‌وه‌یه‌

that this Chinese man faces,

که‌ ڕوخساری ئه‌م پیاوه‌ چینیانه‌

who's language is spoken

که‌ زمانیان هه‌یه‌ و قسه‌ی پێده‌کرێت

by more people in the world

له‌لایەن خه‌ڵکێکی زۆری جیهانه‌وه‌

than any other single language,

له‌ چاو هه‌رتاکه‌ زمانێکی دیکه‌دا

and yet he is sitting at his blackboard,

converting Chinese phrases

into English language phrases.

And what this does is it raises the possibility to us

that in a world in which we want to promote

to maintain and enhance our levels of prosperity,

his actions suggest to us
