I come from Lebanon,

از لبنان ميايم،

and I believe that running can change the world.

و معتقدم كه دويدن می‌تواند جهان را تغيير دهد.

I know what I have just said is simply not obvious.

مى‌‌دونم چيزى كه الان گفتم آنقدر هم واضح نيست.

You know, Lebanon as a country has been once destroyed

مى‌‌دونيد لبنان بعنوان كشورى كه يكبار بواسطه جنگ داخلى (مدنى)

by a long and bloody civil war.

خونين و طولانى نابود شده است.

Honestly, I don't know why they call it civil war

راستش، نمى‌‌دونم چرا بهش ميگن جنگ مدنى

when there is nothing civil about it.

چون هيچ چيز مدنى درباره‌‌ش وجود ندارد.

With Syria to the north, Israel and Palestine to the south,

با سوريه كه در شمال، اسراييل و فلسطين در جنوب آن هستند،

and our government even up till this moment

و دولت ما كه حتى در اين لحظه

is still fragmented and unstable.

هم هنوز بى‌‌ثبات و شكننده است.

براى سالها، اين كشور بين سياست‌‌

For years, the country has been divided between politics and religion.

و مذهب تقسيم شده است.

However, for one day a year,

we truly stand united,

and that's when the marathon takes place.

I used to be a marathon runner.

Long distance running was not only good for my well-being

but it helped me meditate and dream big.

بلكه به من در تمدد اعصاب و روياهاى بزرگ داشتن كمك مى‌‌كرد.

So the longer distances I ran,

بنابراين هر چه مسافتهاى طولانى‌‌ رو مى‌‌دويدم

روياهايم بزرگتر مى‌‌شدند،

the bigger my dreams became.

Until one fateful morning,

تا اينكه در صبحى سرنوشت‌‌ساز،

and while training, I was hit by a bus.

و در حال تمرين كردن، با اتوبوسى تصادف كردم.

I nearly died, was in a coma,

تا مرگ پيش رفتم، در كما بودم،

stayed at the hospital for two years,

دو سال بيمارستان بودم،

و براى اين كه دوباره قادر به راه رفتن باشم تحت ٣٦ عمل جراحى قرار گرفتم.

and underwent 36 surgeries to be able to walk again.

As soon as I came out of my coma,

به محض اين كه از كما خارج شدم،

I realized that I was no longer the same runner I used to be,

فهميدم كه ديگر نمى‌‌تونستم همان دونده‌‌اى كه قبلاً بودم باشم،

so I decided, if I couldn't run myself,

بنابراين تصميم گرفتم، اگر ديگر خودم نمى‌‌توان بدوم،

I wanted to make sure that others could.

ميخواهم مطمئن شوم كه بقيه می‌توانند بدوند.

بنابراين وقتى از بيمارستان بيرون آمدم،

So out of my hospital bed,

I asked my husband to start taking notes,

and a few months later, the marathon was born.

Organizing a marathon as a reaction to an accident

may sound strange,

but at that time, even during my most vulnerable condition,

I needed to dream big.

I needed something to take me out of my pain,

an objective to look forward to.

I didn't want to pity myself, nor to be pitied,

and I thought by organizing such a marathon,

I'll be able to pay back to my community,

build bridges with the outside world,

and invite runners to come to Lebanon

and run under the umbrella of peace.

Organizing a marathon in Lebanon

سازمان‌‌دهى يك دو استقامت در لبنان

is definitely not like organizing one in New York.

قطعاً شباهتى به سازمان‌‌دهى آن در نيويورك ندارد.

How do you introduce the concept of running

چطور مى‌‌خواهيد مفهوم دويدن را به ملتى معرفى

to a nation that is constantly at the brink of war?

كنيد كه مدام در آستانه جنگ قرار دارد؟

How do you ask those who were once fighting

چطور از آنها كه زمانى مشغول نبرد و كشتن

and killing each other

همديگر بوده‌‌اند، خواهيد خواست

to come together and run next to each other?

به هم ملحق شوند و در كنار هم بدوند؟

More than that, how do you convince people to run a distance of 26.2 miles

از همه مهم‌‌تر، چطور آدمها را براى دويدن مسافتى

۴۲ کیلومتری متقاعد مى‌‌كنيد، آنهم

at a time they were not even familiar with the word "marathon"?

در زمانى كه آنها حتى با واژه

"مارتن" ( دو استقامت) آشنا نيستند؟

So we had to start from scratch.

بس بايد از صفر شروع مى‌‌كرديم.

For almost two years, we went all over the country

براى تقريباً دو سال، به سرتاسر كشور رفتيم

and even visited remote villages.

و حتى از روستاهاى دورافتاده ديدن كرديم.

I personally met with people from all walks of life --

من شخصاً با مردمانى از طبقات مختلف جامعه ملاقات كردم--

mayors, NGOs, schoolchildren,

شهردارها، سازمانهاى غيردولتى، بچه‌‌هاى مدرسه‌‌اى،

politicians, militiamen,

سياستمدارها، جنگجويان غيرنظامى، افراد مسجدى يا آدمهاى كليسا،

people from mosques, churches,

the president of the country, even housewives.

رييس جمهور كشور، حتى زنان خانه‌‌دار.

I learned one thing:

يك چيز ياد گرفتم:

When you walk the talk, people believe you.

وقتى حرف و عملتان يكى باشد، مردم شما را باور مى‌‌كنند.

Many were touched by my personal story,

خيلى تحت تاثير داستان شخصى‌‌ام قرار گرفتند،

and they shared their stories in return.

و در عوض داستانهايشان را به اشتراك گذاشتند.

It was honesty and transparency that brought us together.

صداقت و شفافيت بود كه ما را يكجا جمع كرد.

ما باهم با زبان مشترك حرف زديم

We spoke one common language to each other,

and that was from one human to another.

و اين از انسانى به انسان ديگر بود.

Once that trust was built,

زمانى كه اعتماد ساخته شد،

everybody wanted to be part of the marathon

همه مى‌‌خواستند بخشى از دو استقامت باشند

تا به دنيا رنگهاى واقعى لبنان و لبنانى

to show the world the true colors of Lebanon and the Lebanese

and their desire to live in peace and harmony.

و اشتياق آنها براى زندگى كردن در صلح و هارمونى.

In October 2003, over 6,000 runners

در اكتبر ٢٠٠٣، بالغ بر ٦٫٠٠٠ دونده

from 49 different nationalities

came to the start line, all determined,

and when the gunfire went off,

this time it was a signal to run in harmony,

The marathon grew.

So did our political problems.

But for every disaster we had,

In 2005, our prime minister was assassinated,

and the country came to a complete standstill,

so we organized a five-kilometer United We Run campaign.

Over 60,000 people came to the start line,

بيش از ٦٠٫٠٠٠ نفر به خط شروع آمدند،

all wearing white T-shirts with no political slogans.

همگى تى شرتهاى سفيد بدون شعار سياسى به تن داشتند.

That was a turning point for the marathon,

اين نقطه عطفى بود براى دو استقامت ما،

where people started looking at it as a platform

جاييكه مردم شروع كردند به ديدن آن بعنوان سكويى

براى صلح و اتحاد.

for peace and unity.

Between 2006 up to 2009, our country, Lebanon,

بين سالهى ٢٠٠٦ تا ٢٠٠٩، كشور ما، لبنان،

went through unstable years,

سالهاى بى‌ثباتى را پشت سر گذاشت،

invasions, and more assassinations

يورشها، و ترورهاى بيشتريى

that brought us close to a civil war.

كه ما را به يك جنگ داخلى نزديك كرد.

The country was divided again,

كشور دوباره تقسيم شد،

so much that our parliament resigned,

طوريكه پارلمان ما استعفاء داد،

براى يكسال رييس جمهور نداشتيم، و نه نخست وزير.

we had no president for a year, and no prime minister.

But we did have a marathon.

اما دو استقامت‌‌مان را برگزار كرديم.

So through the marathon, we learned that political problems can be overcome.

كه مشكلات سياسى فائق آمدنى هستند.

When the opposition party decided to shut down part of the city center,

we negotiated alternative routes.

ما مسيرهاى جايگزين را بررسى كرديم.

Government protesters became sideline cheerleaders.

سردسته تشويق كنندگان شدند.

They even hosted juice stations.

آنها حتى به پذيرايى در دكه‌‌هاى پخش آبميوه برداختند.

You know, the marathon has really become one of its kind.

مى‌‌دونيد، اين مسابقه دو استقامت در اينجا واقعاً

در نوع خود بينظير است.

It gained credibility

و اعتبار خود را هم از

from both the Lebanese and the international community.

لبنانى‌‌ها و هم از جامعه بين‌‌الملل بدست آورد.

Last November 2012, over 33,000 runners from 85 different nationalities

در نوامبر گذشته در سال ٢٠١٢ ، بيش از ٣٣٫٠٠٠ دونده

came to the start line,

but this time, they challenged a very stormy and rainy weather.

The streets were flooded, but people didn't want to miss out

on the opportunity of being part of such a national day.

BMA has expanded.

We include everyone: the young, the elderly,

the disabled, the mentally challenged,

the blind, the elite, the amateur runners,

نابينا، نخبگان، دونده‌‌هاى غير حرفه‌‌اى،

حتى مادرهايى بهمراه بچه‌‌هاشون.

even moms with their babies.

Themes have included runs for the environment,

موضوعاتى كه شامل اين دوها مى‌‌شود مربوط به محيط زيست،

breast cancer, for the love of Lebanon, for peace,

سرطان پستان، عشق به لبنان، بخاطر صلح

or just simply to run.

يا حتى صرفاً خود دويدن مى‌‌شوند.

نخستين مسابقه سالانه زنان و دختران براى قدرتمند شدن

The first annual all-women-and-girls race for empowerment,

which is one of its kind in the region,

كه در منطقه در نوع خود بى‌‌همتاست،

has just taken place only a few weeks ago,

تنها چند هفته قبل برگزار شد،

with 4,512 women, including the first lady,

با حضور ۴٫۵١٢ زن، از جمله بانوى اول،

and this is only the beginning.

و اين تنها شروع آن است.

I believe these are the building blocks for future peace.

به باور من اينها سنگ بناى صلح آتى است.

BMA has become such a respected event in the region

that government officials in the region,

like Iraq, Egypt and Syria,

have asked the organization to help them structure a similar sporting event.

From Boston to Beirut, we stand as one.

After 10 years in Lebanon,

from national marathons or from national events

to smaller regional races,

we've seen that people want to run for a better future.

After all, peacemaking is not a sprint.

نهايتاً اين كه بوجود آوردن صلح دو با سرعت نيست.

It is more of a marathon.
