I come from Lebanon,

and I believe that running can change the world.

I know what I have just said is simply not obvious.

You know, Lebanon as a country has been once destroyed

by a long and bloody civil war.

Honestly, I don't know why they call it civil war

when there is nothing civil about it.

With Syria to the north, Israel and Palestine to the south,

and our government even up till this moment

is still fragmented and unstable.

For years, the country has been divided between politics and religion.

However, for one day a year,

we truly stand united,

and that's when the marathon takes place.

I used to be a marathon runner.

Long distance running was not only good for my well-being

but it helped me meditate and dream big.

제가 더 깊게 생각하고, 큰 꿈을 꾸도록 도와주었습니다.

So the longer distances I ran,

그래서 더 먼 거리를 달릴 수록,

제 꿈도 더욱 커졌습니다.

the bigger my dreams became.

Until one fateful morning,

제 운명을 바꾼 바로 그 날 아침까지는 말이죠.

and while training, I was hit by a bus.

어느 날, 훈련 중에 저는 버스에 치이는 사고를 당했습니다.

I nearly died, was in a coma,

거의 죽을 뻔 했고, 혼수 상태에 있었습니다.

stayed at the hospital for two years,

2년이란 시간을 병원에서 보냈고,

다시 걸을 수 있게 될 때까지 36번의 수술을 거쳐야만 했습니다.

and underwent 36 surgeries to be able to walk again.

As soon as I came out of my coma,

혼수 상태에서 빠져나오자 마자

I realized that I was no longer the same runner I used to be,

저는 제가 더이상 예전처럼 달릴 수 없다는 것을 알게되었고

so I decided, if I couldn't run myself,

만약 제가 달릴 수 없다면,

I wanted to make sure that others could.

다른 사람들은 반드시 달릴 수 있도록 하겠다고 결심했습니다.

병원 침대에서 일어난 후,

So out of my hospital bed,

I asked my husband to start taking notes,

남편에게 제가 계획하는 것을 받아 적어달라고 부탁했습니다.

and a few months later, the marathon was born.

Organizing a marathon as a reaction to an accident

사고 후에 가장 먼저 한 일이 마라톤을 조직하는 일이라는 것이

may sound strange,

이상하게 들릴 수도 있겠지만

but at that time, even during my most vulnerable condition,

그 당시, 제 인생에서 가장 나약한 상태였던 저에게는

I needed to dream big.

커다란 꿈이 필요했습니다.

I needed something to take me out of my pain,

저는 저를 고통에서 벗어나게 해 줄 무언가가 필요했습니다.

an objective to look forward to.

바라볼 수 있는 목표 말이죠.

I didn't want to pity myself, nor to be pitied,

저는 제 자신을 동정하고 싶지 않았고, 동정받고 싶지도 않았습니다.

and I thought by organizing such a marathon,

그리고 이런 마라톤을 조직하면서

I'll be able to pay back to my community,

우리 사회에 보답할 수 있을 것이고,

build bridges with the outside world,

바깥 세상과의 다리를 만들 수 있으며

and invite runners to come to Lebanon

달리는 사람들을 레바논으로 초대해

and run under the umbrella of peace.

평화의 하늘 아래서 달릴 수 있을 것이라 생각했습니다.

Organizing a marathon in Lebanon

레바논에서 마라톤을 조직한다는 것은

is definitely not like organizing one in New York.

뉴욕에서 하는 것과는 확실히 다릅니다.

How do you introduce the concept of running

끊임없이 전쟁 직전의 상황에 놓여있는 나라에게

to a nation that is constantly at the brink of war?

달리기의 개념을 어떻게 소개해야 할까요?

How do you ask those who were once fighting

어떻게 한 때 싸우고 서로 죽이려던 사람들과

and killing each other

한데 모여서 다같이

to come together and run next to each other?

서로의 옆에서 달릴 수 있게 할 수 있을까요?

More than that, how do you convince people to run a distance of 26.2 miles

무엇보다, 어떻게 "마라톤" 이라는 단어조차도

생소한 사람들에게

at a time they were not even familiar with the word "marathon"?

26.2 마일 (42 킬로미터) 을 달릴 수 있도록

설득할 수 있을까요?

So we had to start from scratch.

그래서 우리는 가장 밑바닥부터 시작해야 했습니다.

For almost two years, we went all over the country

거의 2년 가까이, 우리는 전국을 돌아다녔습니다.

and even visited remote villages.

심지어 외딴 마을까지도요.

I personally met with people from all walks of life --

개인적으로 저는 사회 각계 각층의 사람들과 접촉했습니다.

mayors, NGOs, schoolchildren,

시장님들, 비정부기구, 학생들,

politicians, militiamen,

정치가, 민병대원, 모스크의 사람들, 교회 신도들,

people from mosques, churches,

the president of the country, even housewives.

대통령, 주부들까지도 만났습니다.

I learned one thing:

여기서 저는 한 가지 사실을 배웠습니다:

When you walk the talk, people believe you.

말한대로 행동하는 것을 보면, 사람들이 신뢰하게 됩니다.

Many were touched by my personal story,

많은 사람들이 제 이야기에 감동 받았고,

and they shared their stories in return.

거꾸로 그들이 이야기를 들려주기도 했습니다.

It was honesty and transparency that brought us together.

우리를 뭉치게 한 것은 정직함과 솔직함이었습니다.

우리는 하나의 공통 언어로 대화했고,

We spoke one common language to each other,

and that was from one human to another.

그것은 한 사람으로부터 다른 이에게로 전해졌습니다.

Once that trust was built,

일단 그 신뢰가 쌓이자,

everybody wanted to be part of the marathon

모두가 레바논과 레바논 사람들의 진짜 모습과

평화와 화합 속에서 살고 싶어하는 그들의 바람을

to show the world the true colors of Lebanon and the Lebanese

세상에 보여주기 위해

and their desire to live in peace and harmony.

마라톤에 참가하고 싶어 했습니다.

In October 2003, over 6,000 runners

2003년 10월 각각 다른 49개의 나라에서 온

from 49 different nationalities

6,000명이 넘는 선수들이

came to the start line, all determined,

굳게 결심하여 출발선 앞에 섰습니다.

and when the gunfire went off,

그리고 총성이 울렸을 때,

this time it was a signal to run in harmony,

그것은 변화를 위해 하나되어 달림을 세상에 알리는

for a change.

바로 그 신호였습니다.

The marathon grew.

마라톤의 규모는 계속 커졌습니다.

So did our political problems.

우리의 정치적 문제도 그랬지만요.

But for every disaster we had,

the marathon found ways to bring people together.

In 2005, our prime minister was assassinated,

and the country came to a complete standstill,

so we organized a five-kilometer United We Run campaign.

Over 60,000 people came to the start line,

all wearing white T-shirts with no political slogans.

That was a turning point for the marathon,

그것이 사람들이 우리의 마라톤을

where people started looking at it as a platform

평화와 통합의 발판으로

보기 시작한 전환점이었습니다.

for peace and unity.

Between 2006 up to 2009, our country, Lebanon,

2006에서 2009년까지 우리나라, 레바논은

went through unstable years,

불안정한 시기를 겪었습니다.

invasions, and more assassinations

침략들, 그리고 더 많은 암살은

that brought us close to a civil war.

우리를 내전 상태까지 이끌었습니다.

The country was divided again,

레바논은 다시 분단되었고

so much that our parliament resigned,

우리의 국회도 효력을 잃었습니다.

우리는 1년동안 대통령도, 수상도 없었습니다.

we had no president for a year, and no prime minister.

But we did have a marathon.

하지만 우리의 마라톤은 있었지요.

So through the marathon, we learned that political problems can be overcome.

정치적 문제도 극복될 수 있다는 사실을 배웠습니다.

When the opposition party decided to shut down part of the city center,

야당이 도심부의 일부를

통제하기로 결정했을 때

we negotiated alternative routes.

우리는 대체할 수 있는 다른 길을 찾아냈습니다.

반정부 시위자들은

Government protesters became sideline cheerleaders.

옆줄 밖에의 치어리더가 되었주었습니다.

They even hosted juice stations.

그들은 주스 부스를 열어주기도 했습니다.

You know, the marathon has really become one of its kind.

마라톤은 정말

특유의 독자적 행사가 되었습니다.

It gained credibility

이 마라톤 대회는 레바논 사람들과 국제 사회

from both the Lebanese and the international community.

모두에게서 신임을 받았습니다.

Last November 2012, over 33,000 runners from 85 different nationalities

지난 2012년 11월, 33,000명이 넘는 선수들이

각자 85개의 다른 나라에서

came to the start line,

출발선에 섰습니다.

but this time, they challenged a very stormy and rainy weather.

The streets were flooded, but people didn't want to miss out

도로들은 물에 잠겼지만, 사람들은

on the opportunity of being part of such a national day.

이런 국가적인 날에 함께하는

기회를 놓치고 싶어하지 않았습니다.

BMA(베이루트 마라톤 연합)는 점점 더 커졌습니다.

BMA has expanded.

We include everyone: the young, the elderly,

우리는 모든 사람들과 함께 합니다. 어린이부터 노인까지

the disabled, the mentally challenged,

장애인, 정신 지체 장애인,

the blind, the elite, the amateur runners,

맹인, 명사들, 아마추어 선수들,

심지어 아기와 함께하는 엄마들도 있습니다.

even moms with their babies.

Themes have included runs for the environment,

우리는 지금까지 환경, 유방암,

breast cancer, for the love of Lebanon, for peace,

레바논에 대한 애정, 평화,

or just simply to run.

혹은 그저 달리기를 좋아하는 마음. 이 모든 것을 주제로하여 달려왔습니다.

몇 주 전에 이 지역에서는 유일하게

The first annual all-women-and-girls race for empowerment,

which is one of its kind in the region,

'여성과 여아들의 권리 신장'을 주제로 한

has just taken place only a few weeks ago,

연례 달리기 행사가 개최되었습니다.

with 4,512 women, including the first lady,

모두 4,512명의 여성들이 참가하였으며, 그 중에는 영부인도 포함되어 있습니다.

and this is only the beginning.

그리고 이것은 시작에 불과합니다.

BMA has supported charities and volunteers

who have helped reshape Lebanon,

raising funds for their causes

and encouraging others to give.

The culture of giving and doing good has become contagious.

Stereotypes have been broken.

Change-makers and future leaders have been created.

변화를 이끄는 사람들과 미래의 지도자들이

생겨났습다.

I believe these are the building blocks for future peace.

저는 이들이 미래의 평화를 위한 토대라고 믿습니다.

BMA가 이렇게나 훌륭한 지역의 행사가 됨에 따라

BMA has become such a respected event in the region

that government officials in the region,

이라크, 이집트나 시리아의

like Iraq, Egypt and Syria,

have asked the organization to help them structure a similar sporting event.

우리 단체에 비슷한 스포츠 행사의 조직에

도움을 달라고 요청했습니다.

We are now one of the largest running events in the Middle East,

but most importantly,

it is a platform for hope and cooperation

in an ever-fragile and unstable part of the world.

희망과 협력을 위한 발판이라는 사실입니다.

From Boston to Beirut, we stand as one.

보스턴에서 베이루트까지, 우리는 하나가 되어 일어섭니다.

After 10 years in Lebanon,

레바논에서의 10년 이후,

from national marathons or from national events

국가 규모의 마라톤이나 행사들에서부터

to smaller regional races,

소규모의 지역 경기까지,

we've seen that people want to run for a better future.

우리는 더 나은 미래를 위해 달리는 사람들을 보았습니다.

After all, peacemaking is not a sprint.

결국, 평화를 가져오는 것은 단거리 경주가 아닙니다.

It is more of a marathon.

마라톤에 더 가깝다고 할 수 있지요.
