I come from Lebanon,

من خەڵکی لوبنانم، و

and I believe that running can change the world.

بە بڕوای من ڕاکردن دەتوانێت جیهان بگۆڕێت.

I know what I have just said is simply not obvious.

ئەزانم ئەو شتەی وتم شتێکی زۆر ڕوون نییە.

You know, Lebanon as a country has been once destroyed

دەزانن، پێشتر لوبنان وەک وڵاتێک بە تەواوی لەناوبرابوو

by a long and bloody civil war.

بەهۆی جەنگێکی شارستانی درێژخایەنی خوێناوییەوە.

Honestly, I don't know why they call it civil war

ڕاشکاو بم، ناشزانم بۆچی پێی دەڵێن شارستانی

when there is nothing civil about it.

کە هیچ شتێکی تیا نییە شارستانی بێت.

With Syria to the north, Israel and Palestine to the south,

هەبوونی سوریا لە باکوور، ئیسرائیل و فەڵەستین لە باشور، و

and our government even up till this moment

حکومەتەکەشمان هەتا ئێستاش

is still fragmented and unstable.

پەرتەوازە و ناجێگیرە.

For years, the country has been divided between politics and religion.

بۆ چەندین ساڵ، ئاین و سیاسەت وڵاتەکەی دابەشکردووە.

However, for one day a year,

بەڵام، ساڵانە بۆ یەک ڕۆژ،

we truly stand united,

بە یەکگرتوویی دەوەستین، و

and that's when the marathon takes place.

ئەوەش ئەو ڕۆژەیە کە ماراسۆنی تێدا ئەنجام دەدرێت.

I used to be a marathon runner.

پێشتر من ڕاکەرێکی ماراسۆن بووم.

Long distance running was not only good for my well-being

ڕاکردنی درێژخایەن نەک تەنیا بۆ تەندروستیم باشبوو

but it helped me meditate and dream big.

بەڵکو یارمەتی ئەیام تێڕامان بکەم و خەونی گەورە ببینم.

So the longer distances I ran,

بۆیە هەتا مەودای درێژترم دەبڕی،

the bigger my dreams became.

خەونەکانم گەورەتر ئەبوون.

Until one fateful morning,

هەتا بەیانییەکی چارەنوسساز، و

and while training, I was hit by a bus.

کاتێک ڕاهێنانم ئەکرد، پاسێک خۆی پێداکێشام.

I nearly died, was in a coma,

خەریکبوو بمرم، کەوتمە لەهۆشخۆچوونی درێژخایەنەوە،

stayed at the hospital for two years,

بۆ ماوەی دوو ساڵ لە نەخۆشخانە مامەوە، و

and underwent 36 surgeries to be able to walk again.

٣٦ نەشتەرگەریم بۆ ئەنجامدرا هەتا توانیم بەپێی خۆم بڕۆمەوە.

As soon as I came out of my coma,

هەتا ئەوکاتەی لە لەهۆشخۆچوونە درێژخایەنەکەم هاتمە دەرەوە،

I realized that I was no longer the same runner I used to be,

بۆم دەرکەوت کە چیتر ئەو ڕاکەرەی پێشتر نیم،

so I decided, if I couldn't run myself,

بۆیە بڕیارم یا، ئەگەر خۆم نەتوانم ڕاکەم،

I wanted to make sure that others could.

ویستم دڵنیابمەوە خەڵکی تر بتوانن.

So out of my hospital bed,

بۆیە لەدوای هاتنە دەرەوەم لە نەخۆشخانە،

I asked my husband to start taking notes,

داوام لە مێردەکەم کرد دەستبکات بە نوسینەوەی تێبینی، و

and a few months later, the marathon was born.

چەند هەفتەیەک دواتریش ماراسۆنێک ئەنجامدرا.

Organizing a marathon as a reaction to an accident

ڕێکخستنی ماراسۆن وەک کاردانەوە بۆ ڕووداوێک

may sound strange,

لەوانەیە لە سەیر بچێت،

but at that time, even during my most vulnerable condition,

بەڵام لەوکاتەدا، تەنانەت لە قورسترین کاتی ژیانیشمدا،

I needed to dream big.

پێویستبوو خەونی گەورە ببینم.

I needed something to take me out of my pain,

شتێکم ئەویست بتوانێت لە ئازارەکەم بمباتە دەرەوە،

an objective to look forward to.

کارێک هەوڵی بۆ بەم.

I didn't want to pity myself, nor to be pitied,

نەمدەویست بەزەییم بەخۆمدا بێتەوە، یان بەزەییان پێما بێتەوە، و

and I thought by organizing such a marathon,

بیرمکردەوە بە ڕێکخستنی ماراسۆنێکی ئاواهی،

I'll be able to pay back to my community,

ئەتوانم چاکەیەک لەگەڵ کۆمەڵگاکەی خۆمدا بکەم،

build bridges with the outside world,

پرد بنیات بنێم لەگەڵ جیهانی دەرەوەدا، و

and invite runners to come to Lebanon

and run under the umbrella of peace.

Organizing a marathon in Lebanon

ڕێکخستنی ماراسۆن لە لوبنان

is definitely not like organizing one in New York.

بەدڵنیاییەوە وەک ڕێکخستنی نییە لە شاری نیویۆرک.

How do you introduce the concept of running

چۆن ئامانجی ڕاکردن دەناسێنیت بە

to a nation that is constantly at the brink of war?

نەتەوەیەک کە بەردەوام لەسەر لێواری شەڕدایە؟

How do you ask those who were once fighting

چۆن داوا لەوانە دەکەیت کە پێشتر شەڕیان دەکرد و

and killing each other

یەکتریان دەکوشت

to come together and run next to each other?

پێکەوە کۆبنەوە و لەنزیک یەکترەوە ڕابکەن؟

More than that, how do you convince people to run a distance of 26.2 miles

لەوەش زیاتر، چۆن خەڵک قایل دەکەیت مەودای ٢٦.٢ ڕاکەن

at a time they were not even familiar with the word "marathon"?

لە سەردەمێکدا کە کەسی ئاشنا نییە بە وشەی "ماراسۆن"؟

So we had to start from scratch.

بۆیە ئەبوو لە سفرەوە دەستپێکەین.

For almost two years, we went all over the country

بۆ ماوەی دوو ساڵ، سەردانی سەرانسەری وڵاتمان کرد و

and even visited remote villages.

تەنانەت سەردانی گوندە دوورەدەستەکانیشمان کرد.

I personally met with people from all walks of life --

بەتایبەتی چاوم بە خەڵک کەوت لە هەموو بەشەکانی ژیان --

mayors, NGOs, schoolchildren,

پارێزگارەکان، ڕێکخراوە ناحکومییەکان، منداڵانی قوتابخانەکان،

politicians, militiamen,

سیاسەتمەدارەکان، پیاوانی میلیشیاکان،

people from mosques, churches,

خەڵکانی مزگەوتەکان و کڵێسەکان،

the president of the country, even housewives.

سەرۆکی وڵات، و تەنانەت ژنانی ماڵیشەوە.

I learned one thing:

یەک شت فێربووم:

When you walk the talk, people believe you.

کاتێک ئەوە دەکەی کە ئەیڵێیت، خەڵک باوەڕ پێئەکەن.

Many were touched by my personal story,

چیرۆکەکەی خۆم کاریکردە سەر زۆرێکیان، و

and they shared their stories in return.

ئەوانیش لە بەرامبەردا چیرۆکەکانی خۆیان باسدەکرد.

It was honesty and transparency that brought us together.

ئەوە ڕاستگۆیی و ڕۆشنی بوو کە کۆیکردینەوە.

We spoke one common language to each other,

بە یەک زمانی هاوبەش قسەمان لەگەڵ یەکتر ئەکرد، و

and that was from one human to another.

ئەویش قسەکردن لە مرۆڤێکەوە بۆ مرۆڤێکی تر.

Once that trust was built,

هەر کە متمانەکە بنیاتنرا،

everybody wanted to be part of the marathon

هەمووان دەیانویست بەشداری بکەن لە ماراسۆنەکەدا

to show the world the true colors of Lebanon and the Lebanese

and their desire to live in peace and harmony.

خواستیان بۆ ژیان بە ئاشتی و تەبایی چۆنە.

In October 2003, over 6,000 runners

تشرینی یەکەمی ٢٠٠٣، زیاتر لە شەش هەزار ڕاکەر

from 49 different nationalities

came to the start line, all determined,

هاتنە سەر هێڵی دەستپێکردن، هەموویان سوربوون، و

and when the gunfire went off,

this time it was a signal to run in harmony,

for a change.

The marathon grew.

So did our political problems.

But for every disaster we had,

the marathon found ways to bring people together.

In 2005, our prime minister was assassinated,

ساڵی ٢٠٠٥، سەرۆک وەزیرانمان تیرۆر کرا، و

and the country came to a complete standstill,

so we organized a five-kilometer United We Run campaign.

بۆیە کەمبینێکمان سازکرد بەناوی پێنج کیلۆمەتر ڕاکردنی یەکگرتوویی.

Over 60,000 people came to the start line,

زیاتر لە شەست هەزار کەس هاتن بۆ هێڵی دەستپێکردن،

all wearing white T-shirts with no political slogans.

هەموویان ئەو تیشێرتانەیان لەبەردا بوو کە هیچ دروشمێکی سیاسی لەسەر نەبوو.

That was a turning point for the marathon,

ئەوە خاڵێکی وەچەرخان بوو بۆ ماراسۆنەکە،

where people started looking at it as a platform

کە ئیتر خەڵک وەک سەکۆیەک سەیریان دەکرد

for peace and unity.

بۆ ئاشتی و یەکگرتن.

Between 2006 up to 2009, our country, Lebanon,

لە نێوان ساڵەکانی ٢٠٠٦ بۆ ٢٠٠٩، وڵاتەکەمان، لوبنان،

went through unstable years,

بە چەند ساڵێکی ناسەقامگیرا تێپەڕی،

invasions, and more assassinations

داگیرکردن، و تیرۆری زیاتر

that brought us close to a civil war.

کە نزیکی کردینەوە لە شەڕی ناوخۆ.

The country was divided again,

دووبارە وڵاتەکە دابەشبوو،

so much that our parliament resigned,

بەشێوەیەک کە پەرلەمانەکەمان داخرا،

we had no president for a year, and no prime minister.

But we did have a marathon.

So through the marathon, we learned that political problems can be overcome.

When the opposition party decided to shut down part of the city center,

کاتێک پارتی ئۆپۆزسیۆن بڕیاریدا بەشێکی ناوەندی شار دابخات،

we negotiated alternative routes.

دانوستانمان کرد بۆ ڕێگای تری ماراسۆن.

Government protesters became sideline cheerleaders.

خۆپیشاندەرەکانی حکومەت بوون بە هاندەرەکانی قەراغ ڕێگاکە.

They even hosted juice stations.

تەنانەت شوێنی پێشکەشکردنی شەربەتیشیان بۆ دانابووین.

You know, the marathon has really become one of its kind.

ئەزانن، ماراسۆن بەڕاستی تایبەتمەندی خۆی وەرگرتووە.

It gained credibility

سەرنجێکی زۆری پێگەشتووە

from both the Lebanese and the international community.

لەلایەن کۆمەڵگای لوبنانی و کۆمەڵگای نێودەوڵەتیشەوە.

Last November 2012, over 33,000 runners from 85 different nationalities

تشرینی دووەمی ٢٠١٢، زیاتر لە ٣٣ هەزار ڕاکەر لە ٨٥ نەتەوەی جیاواز

came to the start line,

هاتنە سەر هێڵی دەستپێکردن،

but this time, they challenged a very stormy and rainy weather.

بەڵام ئەمجارەیان، بەرەنگاری کەشێکی ڕەشەبا و باراناوی بوونەوە.

The streets were flooded, but people didn't want to miss out

لافاو هەستا لە شەقامەکان، بەڵام خەڵک نەیانویست لەکیسیان بچێت

on the opportunity of being part of such a national day.

دەرفەتی بوون بە بەشێک لە ڕۆژێکی ئاوا نەتەوەیی.

ماراسۆنە نەتەوەییەکە فراوان بوو.

BMA has expanded.

We include everyone: the young, the elderly,

بەشداریمان بە هەمووان کرد: گەنج، و پیر، و

the disabled, the mentally challenged,

خاوەن پێداویستی تایبەت، و بیرکۆڵەکان، و

the blind, the elite, the amateur runners,

نابیناکان، و تەنانەت ڕاکەرە پیشەگەرەکان، و

even moms with their babies.

دایکانیش بە منداڵەکانیانەوە.

Themes have included runs for the environment,

breast cancer, for the love of Lebanon, for peace,

or just simply to run.

The first annual all-women-and-girls race for empowerment,

یەکەم ڕاکردنی ساڵانەی ژنان و کچان بۆ هێزدانە بەرخۆ،

which is one of its kind in the region,

کە یەکەمە لە جۆری خۆی لە ناوچەکە،

has just taken place only a few weeks ago,

with 4,512 women, including the first lady,

and this is only the beginning.

BMA has supported charities and volunteers

The culture of giving and doing good has become contagious.

Stereotypes have been broken.

داب و نەریتە کۆنەکان شکێنران.

Change-makers and future leaders have been created.

گۆڕانکاری درووستکەرەکان و سەرکردەکانی داهاتوو درووستکران.

I believe these are the building blocks for future peace.

بە باوەڕی من ئەمانە بەردی بناغەی ئاشتی داهاتوون.

BMA has become such a respected event in the region

ڕێکخراوی ماراسۆنی بەیروت بووە بە بۆنەیەکی ئەوەندە ڕێزلێگیراو لە ناوچەکە

that government officials in the region,

کە بەرپرسە حکومییەکانی ناوچەکە،

like Iraq, Egypt and Syria,

وەک عێراق و میسڕ و سوریا،

have asked the organization to help them structure a similar sporting event.

داوایان لە ڕێکخراوەکە کردووە یارمەتیان بدات لە ڕێکخستنی بۆنەیەکی وەرزشی هاوشێوەدا.

We are now one of the largest running events in the Middle East,

ئێستا بۆنەکەی ئێمە یەکێکە لە گەورەترین بۆنەکانی ڕاکردنی خۆرهەڵاتی ناوەڕاست،

but most importantly,

بەڵام لە هەمووی گرنگتر،

it is a platform for hope and cooperation

in an ever-fragile and unstable part of the world.

لە بەشێکی ناسەقامگیر و هەستیاری جیهاندا.

From Boston to Beirut, we stand as one.

لە بۆستنەوە بۆ بەیروت، بە یەکگرتوویی دەوەستین.

After 10 years in Lebanon,

from national marathons or from national events

we've seen that people want to run for a better future.

After all, peacemaking is not a sprint.

هەرچۆنێک بێت، درووستکردنی ئاشتی ڕاکردنێکی خێرا نییە.

It is more of a marathon.
