I'm going to speak today about the relationship

ساتحدث اليوم عن العلاقة

between science and human values.

بين العلم و القيم الإنسانية.

Now, it's generally understood that

إن من المتعارف عليه أن

questions of morality --

الأسئلة الأخلاقية

questions of good and evil and right and wrong --

الأسئلة عن الخير والشر .. الصواب والخطأ

are questions about which science officially has no opinion.

هي أسئلة لا يملك العلم فيما يخصها أي شأن

It's thought that science can help us

ومعروف أن العلم يمكن أن يساعدنا

get what we value,

في فهم الأشياء التي يجب ان نقدرها

but it can never tell us what we ought to value.

ولكنه لن يستطيع يوما أن يخبرنا بالشيء الذي يتوجب علينا تقديره

And, consequently, most people -- I think most people

وبصورة دائمة .. وأعتقد ان معظم الناس

probably here -- think that science will never answer

هنا أيضاً على الارجح .. يعتقدون ان العلم لن يجاوب يوما

the most important questions in human life:

على الاسئلة الاكثر اهمية في حياة الانسان

questions like, "What is worth living for?"

الاسئلة مثل " مالذي يستحق العيش لأجله ؟ "

"What is worth dying for?"

"مالذي يستحق الموت لأجله ؟ "

"What constitutes a good life?"

" مالذي يحدده الحياة المناسبة "

So, I'm going to argue

لذا سوف احاجج في هذا الامر على

that this is an illusion -- that the separation between

إعتباره وهم ! .. أي ان التفريق بين

science and human values is an illusion --

العلم وقيم الانسان ... ما هو الا وهم

and actually quite a dangerous one

وهو وهم خطير في الحقيقة

at this point in human history.

في هذه المرحلة من تاريخ الانسان

Now, it's often said that science

ويقال عادة .. ان العلم

cannot give us a foundation for morality and human values,

لا يستطيع ان يعطينا الاساس السليم للاخلاق وللقيم الانسانية

because science deals with facts,

لان العلم يتعامل مع الحقائق

and facts and values seem to belong to different spheres.

وعلى ما يبدو الحقائق والقيم ينتمي كل مفهوم منها الى كوكب خاص به .

It's often thought that there's no description

ومن المعتقد ايضاً .. انه لا يوجد وصف

of the way the world is

لاي طريقة في العالم ..

that can tell us how the world ought to be.

تخبرنا عن كيفية وجوب كون هذا العالم الذي نعيش به

But I think this is quite clearly untrue.

ولكني أعتقد ان هذا غير صحيح البتة

Values are a certain kind of fact.

لأن القيم ما هي الا مجرد نوع من الحقائق

They are facts about the well-being of conscious creatures.

فهي حقائق عن وجود الكائنات الواعية

Why is it that we don't have ethical obligations toward rocks?

فلماذا لا نملك أي إلتزامات أخلاقية تجاه الاحجار ؟

Why don't we feel compassion for rocks?

لماذا لا نشعر بالتعاطف مع الاحجار ؟

It's because we don't think rocks can suffer. And if we're more

لاننا نظن ان الاحجار لن تعاني .. واذا كنا

concerned about our fellow primates

مهتمين أكثر بالقرود مما نحن

than we are about insects, as indeed we are,

نهتم بالحشرات فهذا بالتأكيد

it's because we think they're exposed to a greater range

سببه أننا نظن انهم - القرود - معرضون لمجال اكبر من

of potential happiness and suffering.

السعادة والمعاناة المحتملة

Now, the crucial thing to notice here

والان الشيء المهم التي يجب التنوه له هنا

is that this is a factual claim:

ان ما سبق ليس سوى حقيقة واقعية

This is something that we could be right or wrong about. And if we

وهي شيء يمكن ان نكون مصيبين في شأنه أو مخطئين .. واذا كنا

have misconstrued the relationship between biological complexity

قد اساءنا فهم العلاقة بين البيولوجية المعقدة

and the possibilities of experience

وبين الامكانيات المتاحة للتجارب

well then we could be wrong about the inner lives of insects.

فإننا على الارجح مخطئين عن فهمنا الخاص عن حياة الحشرات العاطفية ..

And there's no notion,

ولا يوجد اي مفهوم

no version of human morality

او اي اصدار عن اخلاقيات الانسان

and human values that I've ever come across

وقيمه قد قرأت او اطلعت عليه

that is not at some point reducible

لا يحمل في طياته

to a concern about conscious experience

الاهتمام بالتجارب الواعية

and its possible changes.

والتغيرات الممكنة تبعا لها

Even if you get your values from religion,

حتى لو كانت قيمك تلك مأخوذة من قبل الاديان

even if you think that good and evil ultimately

حتى لو كنت تؤمن بالخير والشر المطلق

relate to conditions after death --

او بالحياة ما بعد الموت

either to an eternity of happiness with God

سواء بالجنة مع الله

or an eternity of suffering in hell --

او بالخلود والمعاناة في الجحيم

you are still concerned about consciousness and its changes.

فسوف تبقى مهتم بالوعي وبالامور التي يغيرها

And to say that such changes can persist after death

والقول ان هذه التغيرات سوف تستمر الى ما بعد الموت

is itself a factual claim,

فهذا بحد ذاته ادعاء

which, of course, may or may not be true.

يمكن ان يكون صحيحا و يمكن ان يكون خاطئاً

Now, to speak about the conditions of well-being

والان وبالحديث عن ظروف المعيشة

in this life, for human beings,

في هذه الحياة .. حياة البشر

we know that there is a continuum of such facts.

نحن نعلم ان هنالك حقائق مستمرة

We know that it's possible to live in a failed state,

حيث نعلم انه يمكن العيش في دولة فاشلة

where everything that can go wrong does go wrong --

حيث كل شيء يسير بالصورة الخاطئة مرارا وتكرارا

where mothers cannot feed their children,

حيث لا يمكن للنساء إطعام اطفالهن

where strangers cannot find the basis for peaceful collaboration,

ولا يمكن للعامة ايجاد قاعدة تواصل مسالمة للتعاون فيما بينهم

where people are murdered indiscriminately.

وحيث يُقتل الناس بصورة عشوائية ودائمة

And we know that it's possible to move along this continuum

ونحن نعلم انه يمكننا الاستمرار في العيش بهذه الاستمرارية

towards something quite a bit more idyllic,

لاننا نأمل بأننا سنصل لاحقاً لشيء أكثر مثالية

to a place where a conference like this is even conceivable.

لمكان حيث يمكن لمؤتمر مثل هذا أن يُعقد

And we know -- we know --

وكما نعلم - ونحن نعلم

that there are right and wrong answers

ان هنالك اجوبة صحيحة واجوبة خاطئة

to how to move in this space.

Would adding cholera to the water be a good idea?

فهل اضافة جرثومة الكوليرا الى الماء امرٌ مناسب ؟

Probably not.

ربما لا ..

Would it be a good idea for everyone to believe in the evil eye,

وهل من المناسب ان يؤمن الناس بالعين الحسود ..

so that when bad things happened to them

والتي تجعلهم حين إصابتهم بالمساوىء والمصائب

they immediately blame their neighbors? Probably not.

يلومون جيرانهم على الفور ؟ .. حتما لا

There are truths to be known

فهنالك حقائق معلومة

about how human communities flourish,

عن كيفية ازدهار المجتمعات البشرية

whether or not we understand these truths.

سواء فهمنا تلك الحقائق او لم نفهمها

And morality relates to these truths.

الأخلاق والقيم مرتبطة بتلك الحقائق

So, in talking about values we are talking about facts.

لذا عندما نتحدث عن القيم .. فنحن نتحدث عن الوقائع

Now, of course our situation in the world can be understood at many levels --

إن عالمنا هذا يمكن ان يُفهم بمستويات عدة

from the level of the genome

سواء كان ذلك على مستوى " الجينات "

on up to the level of economic systems

او على مستوى الانظمة الاقتصادية

and political arrangements.

او الترتيبات السياسية

But if we're going to talk about human well-being

ولكن ان كنا نريد التحدث عن معيشة الانسان

we are, of necessity, talking about the human brain.

فانه يتوجب علينا التحدث حتما عن دماغ الانسان

Because we know that our experience of the world and of ourselves within it

لاننا نعرف تماما ان تجاربنا في هذا العالم ومعرفتنا عن انفسنا تقبع في داخله

is realized in the brain --

وهي مفهومة داخل الدماغ

whatever happens after death.

مهما كان سيحدث بعد الموت

Even if the suicide bomber does get 72 virgins in the afterlife,

فحتى الانتحاري الذي يفجر نفسه طمعا في 72 جارية في حياته التالية

in this life, his personality --

فهو في هذه الحياة .. وشخصيته

his rather unfortunate personality --

او للأسف ما يدعى شبه شخصيته

is the product of his brain.

ما هي الا نتاج لدماغه

So the contributions of culture --

وثقافته التي شاركت في تشكيلها

if culture changes us, as indeed it does,

واذا استطاعت الثقافة تغيرنا .. وهي تستطيع ذلك

it changes us by changing our brains.

فهي تغيرنا لانها تغير أدمغتنا

And so therefore whatever cultural variation there is

فهي على ذلك وبإختلافها بصورة شاسعة

in how human beings flourish

هي التي تحدد الشاكلة التي يزدهر بها مجتمعنا البشري

can, at least in principle, be understood

على الاقل من حيث المبدأ .. ويمكن فهم ذلك

in the context of a maturing science of the mind --

ضمن نطاق النضج في فهم الدماغ

neuroscience, psychology, etc.

وعلم الاعصاب .. وعلم النفس .. إلخ

So, what I'm arguing is that

لذا الذي أحاجج به .. هو ان

value's reduced to facts --

القيم هي نتاج الحقائق

to facts about the conscious experience

الحقائق التي نتجت عن التجارب واعية

of conscious beings.

التي نتجت عن وجودنا البشري الواعي

And we can therefore visualize a space

يمكننا من هذا المنطلق تصور عالم جديد

of possible changes in the experience of these beings.

تبعا للتغيرات المحتملة والتي نتجت عن التجارب المختلفة لذلك الوجود الواعي

And I think of this as kind of a moral landscape,

وانا افكر في كل هذا كما لو انه " منظر طبيعي أخلاقي "

with peaks and valleys that correspond

مليئ بالجبال والوديان والتي تتجاوب

to differences in the well-being of conscious creatures,

مع اختلاف وجودنا كمخلوقات واعية

both personal and collective.

سواء كانت تلك الاخلاق شخصية او جماعية

And one thing to notice is that perhaps

والشيء الذي يجب التنويه له ربما ..

there are states of human well-being

ان هنالك حالات لتواجد الانسان

that we rarely access, that few people access.

لا يمكننا الوصول إليها عادة .. والقليل من الناس يصل إليها

And these await our discovery.

وهي تنتظرنا لكي نكتشفها

Perhaps some of these states can be appropriately called

وربما هذه الحالات الوصف الملائم لها

mystical or spiritual.

انها " روحانية " او " صوفية "

Perhaps there are other states that we can't access

وربما هذه هي الحالات التي لا يمكننا ان نصل إليها

because of how our minds are structured

لان عقولنا قد تشكلت - تنظمت

but other minds possibly could access them.

ولكن بعض العقول الأُخرى يمكنها الوصول اليها

Now, let me be clear about what I'm not saying. I'm not saying

والآن علي ان أكون واضحا عن الذي لا أرمي إليه في حديث هذا .. فأنا لا أتحدث

that science is guaranteed to map this space,

على ان العلم هو الشيء الذي سوف يشكل وجودنا في هذه الحياة

or that we will have scientific answers to every

او ان العلم سوف يجيب على كل الاسئلة

conceivable moral question.

المتصورة عن الأخلاق

I don't think, for instance, that you will one day consult

فأنا لا أظن انه على سبيل المثال انه يمكننا ان

a supercomputer to learn whether you should have a second child,

ندفع الكمبيوترات فائقة الذكاء بأن تخبرنا هل يتوجب علينا انجاب طفل آخر أو لا

or whether we should bomb Iran's nuclear facilities,

او هل علينا أن نقصف منشأت إيران النووية أو لا

or whether you can deduct the full cost of TED as a business expense.

أو هل يتوجب علينا إعتبار تكلفة مؤتمر " تيد " الكلية .. هي تكلفة تجارية لمشاريع دفينة

(Laughter)

But if questions affect human well-being

ولكن إن كانت تلك الاسئلة تتعلق بالوجود البشري

then they do have answers, whether or not we can find them.

فهي ستستطيع الاجابة .. سواء كنا نستطيع نحن او لا

And just admitting this --

وبالاعتراف بهذا فحسب

just admitting that there are right and wrong answers

بالاعتراف ان هنالك اجوبة صحيحة او خاطئة

to the question of how humans flourish --

لكيفية ازدهار الوجود البشري

will change the way we talk about morality,

سوف تغير الطريقة التي نتحدث بها عن الاخلاق

and will change our expectations

وسوف تغير توقعاتنا

of human cooperation in the future.

عن التعاون البشري في المستقبل

For instance, there are 21 states in our country

على سبيل المثال .. هنالك 21 ولاية في الولايات المتحدة الامريكية

where corporal punishment in the classroom is legal,

حيث الضرب مسموح في المدارس

where it is legal for a teacher to beat a child with a wooden board, hard,

حيث هناك مسموح للمدرس ان يضرب الطلاب بعصى خشبية بصورة قاسية

and raising large bruises and blisters and even breaking the skin.

لدرجة ان تظهر الكدمات والجروح على أجسامهم

And hundreds of thousands of children, incidentally,

وهنالك مئات الآلاف من الطلاب

are subjected to this every year.

يتعرضون لهذا كل عام

The locations of these enlightened districts, I think, will fail to surprise you.

وهذه الولايات التي يسمح القانون بتلك التشريعات .. أعتقد انها لن تفاجئكم

We're not talking about Connecticut.

فنحن لا نتحدث عن ولاية " كونكتيكت "

And the rationale for this behavior is explicitly religious.

والدافع لهذا التشريع هو " ديني بحت "

The creator of the universe himself

فخالق الكون بنفسه

has told us not to spare the rod,

أخبرنا أن لا نتوانا عن ضرب الطفل

lest we spoil the child --

لكي لا يفسد أو ينحرف

this is in Proverbs 13 and 20, and I believe, 23.

أعتقد أن هذا التشريع موجود في الأمثال .. 13 و 20 و أيضا 23

But we can ask the obvious question:

ولكن هنالك سؤال واضح يمكن طرحه هنا

Is it a good idea, generally speaking,

هل هي فكرة جيدة .. وانا اتحدث بصورة عامة

to subject children to pain

بأن نعرض الاطفال للآلام

and violence and public humiliation

والعنف والإهانة العلنية

as a way of encouraging healthy emotional development

بهدف ان نحمسهم على التطور العاطفي الصحي

and good behavior?

او التصرف الحسن ؟

Is there any doubt

هل هنالك اي شك

that this question has an answer,

ان لهذا السؤال جواب واضح وصريح

and that it matters?

وهل هذا يهم فعلا ؟

Now, many of you might worry

الان .. العديد من الاشياء التي تشغل بالنا

that the notion of well-being is truly undefined,

هو ان المفهوم الحقيقي لوجود الانسان غير محدد

and seemingly perpetually open to be re-construed.

وهو على طول الدوام مطروح لاعادة التفسير

And so, how therefore can there be an

وهكذا .. هل يمكن ان نوجد يوما ما

objective notion of well-being?

مفهوم صريح لوجود الانسان ؟

Well, consider by analogy, the concept of physical health.

حسناً .. بالنظر إلى جسم الانسان على سبيل المثال .. فمفهوم الانسان الصحيح

The concept of physical health is undefined.

مفهوم الصحة الجسدية غير محددٌ أيضاً

As we just heard from Michael Specter, it has changed over the years.

وكما سمعنا من " مايكل سبيكتر " انه تغير على مدى السنوات

When this statue was carved

فعندما تم صنع هذا التمثال

the average life expectancy was probably 30.

كان متوسط عمر الانسان على الاغلب 30 عام

It's now around 80 in the developed world.

والان هو حول ال 80 عام في الدول النامية

There may come a time when we meddle with our genomes

ويمكن ان نصل الى وقت بحيث نكون قد عدلنا فيه جيناتنا

in such a way that not being able to run a marathon

لكي يصبح الانسان الذي لا يستطيع ان يشارك في سباق المارثون

at age 200 will be considered a profound disability.

في عمر ال200 هو انسان معتلٌ وعليل

People will send you donations when you're in that condition.

وسوف يرسل الناس إليه التبرعات نظراً لحالته السيئة

Notice that the fact that the concept of health

لاحظ .. انه كون مفهوم الصحة

is open, genuinely open for revision,

مفتوح على صراعيه لكي تتم اعادة صياغته

does not make it vacuous.

فان هذا لم يجعل منه مفهوما " فارغاً "

The distinction between a healthy person

فالفرق بين الانسان الصحيح

and a dead one

والانسان الميت

is about as clear and consequential as any we make in science.

مرتبط منطقيا بصورة واضحة بالانجازات العلمية التي نحقق

Another thing to notice is there may be many peaks on the moral landscape:

ويمكننا التنوه الى شيء آخر .. انه يمكن وجود تفوق في " المشهد الطبيعي الاخلاقي "

There may be equivalent ways to thrive;

وان هنالك طرق مكافئة للوصول للإزدهار

there may be equivalent ways to organize a human society

وهنالك طرق مشابهة لتنظيم المجتمع البشري

so as to maximize human flourishing.

وتلك الطرق ستدفع للحد الاقصى الذي يضمن الازدهار البشري

Now, why wouldn't this

حسناً .. لماذا هذا لا

undermine an objective morality?

يقوض الهدف الأخلاقي ؟

Well think of how we talk about food:

حسناً . .بالنظر الى الطعام

I would never be tempted to argue to you

ولست أطمح ان أحاجج في

that there must be one right food to eat.

ان يكون هنالك طعام مناسب واحد لكي يؤكل

There is clearly a range of materials

فهنالك طيف واسع من المواد

that constitute healthy food.

التي تحوي الطعام الصحي

But there's nevertheless a clear distinction

ولكن هنالك فرق واضح ايضاً

between food and poison.

بين الطعام وبين السموم

The fact that there are many right answers

صحيح ان هنالك عدة اجوبة صحيحة

to the question, "What is food?"

للسؤال " ماذا نأكل ؟"

does not tempt us

ولكن هذا لا يمنع

to say that there are no truths to be known about human nutrition.

من ان هنالك حقائق وواقع معروفة ويجب ان تعرف عن الغذاء البشري !

Many people worry

والعديد من الناس يقلق

that a universal morality would require

من ان وجود سياسة اخلاقية عالمية

moral precepts that admit of no exceptions.

لان وجود مفاهيم اخلاقية .. يعني عدم وجود اي استثناءات

So, for instance, if it's really wrong to lie,

فعلى سبيل المثال .. اذا كان الكذب خطيئة

it must always be wrong to lie,

فيتوجب عليه ان يكون كذلك دائما

and if you can find an exception,

واذا وجدت استثناء لتلك القاعدة

well then there's no such thing as moral truth.

فذلك يعني انه لا يوجد شيء يدعى بالحقيقة الاخلاقية

Why would we think this?

غريب أن نظن هذا , لماذا ؟

Consider, by analogy, the game of chess.

لانه ومن حيث المبدأ وبالنظر إلى لعبة الشطرنج

Now, if you're going to play good chess,

فانك عندما تلعب الشطرنج هنالك مبدأ

a principle like, "Don't lose your Queen,"

يقول أنه يتوجب عليك ان لا تخسر " الوزير "

is very good to follow.

وهو مبدأ جيد جدا لكي تتبعه في اللعب

But it clearly admits some exceptions.

ولكن هذا المبدأ يتقبل الاستثناءات حتما

There are moments when losing your Queen is a brilliant thing to do.

فهنالك مواقف يكون فيها التضحية في الوزير هو الحركة الامثل للقيام بها

There are moments when it is the only good thing you can do.

وهنالك مواقف يكون فيها التضحية في الوزير هو الخيار الوحيد المتبقي للاعب

And yet, chess is a domain of perfect objectivity.

ورغم هذا فان الشطرنج تعد من لعبة لها اهداف ثابتة ومثالية

The fact that there are exceptions here does not

ووجود بعض الاستثناءات لا

change that at all.

يغير من تلك الحقيقة على الاطلاق

Now, this brings us to the sorts of moves

والآن هذا يقودنا الى هذا النوع من التوجهات

that people are apt to make in the moral sphere.

هؤلاء الاشخاص يشكلون مجالاً أخلاقياً معيناً

Consider the great problem of women's bodies:

وبالنظر الى مشكلة جسد المرأة وتسلعيه

What to do about them?

فمالذي يمكن القيام به .. ؟

Well this is one thing you can do about them:

حسناً يمكننا أن نقوم بأحد الحلول

You can cover them up.

والذي هو تغطية هذا الجسد ..

Now, it is the position, generally speaking, of our intellectual community

الآن في هذا الموقع .. وانا اتحدث بصورة عامة .. في المجتمع " الإزدواجي " في آرائه

that while we may not like this,

ربما لا يبدو الحل كهذا ..

we might think of this as "wrong"

وربما نظن أن هذا هو تصرف " خاطىء "

in Boston or Palo Alto,

في ولاية بوسطن أو ولاية بالو ألتو

who are we to say

ولكن من نحن لكي نقول ..

that the proud denizens of an ancient culture

أن هؤلاء " الرجعين الفخورين " من الحضارات القديمة وحتى اليوم

are wrong to force their wives and daughters

to live in cloth bags?

And who are we to say, even, that they're wrong

to beat them with lengths of steel cable,

or throw battery acid in their faces

if they decline the privilege of being smothered in this way?

Well, who are we not to say this?

Who are we to pretend

ومن نحن لكي ندعي

that we know so little about human well-being

اننا نعرف قليلا عن الوجود الانساني بحيث لا نعارض هذا

that we have to be non-judgmental about a practice like this?

ولا نأخذ موقع الحكم عن تصرف كذاك ؟

I'm not talking about voluntary wearing of a veil --

انا لا اتحدث هنا عن النسوة اللاتي إخترن بملء إرادتهن ارتداء الحجاب

women should be able to wear whatever they want, as far as I'm concerned.

فللنسوة الحق في ارتداء ما يشئن بحسب علمي في أي مكان في العالم

But what does voluntary mean

ولكن ماذا يعني مفهوم " الاختيار "

in a community where,

في مجتمع عندما تغتصب

when a girl gets raped,

الفتاة فيه

her father's first impulse,

فان ردة فعل والدها الاولى

rather often, is to murder her out of shame?

هي غالبا قتلها درعاً .. للعار الذي ناله جراء إغتصابها !

Just let that fact detonate in your brain for a minute:

أدر هذه الفكرة في رأسك قليلا

Your daughter gets raped,

لقد تم إغتصاب ابنتك

and what you want to do is kill her.

والذي تريد القيام به هو قتلها

What are the chances that represents

ما هي احتمال ان يمثل هذا التصرف

a peak of human flourishing?

تقدم وازدهار للمجتمع البشري ؟

Now, to say this is not to say that we have got the

الان انا لا ادعي اننا في مجتمعنا نملك الصورة

perfect solution in our own society.

المثالية عن المرأة

For instance,

فعلى سبيل المثال

this is what it's like to go to a newsstand almost anywhere

هذا ما سوف تراه في منصات بيع الجرائد والمجلات في اي مكان

in the civilized world.

في العالم المتحضر

Now, granted, for many men

صحيح أن هذا لكثير من الرجال

it may require a degree in philosophy to see something wrong with these images.

يحتاج درجة في علم الفلسفة لكي يقولون ان هذا الاسلوب من استهلاك النساء خاطىء

But if we are in a reflective mood,

ولكن وبتفكير معتدل

we can ask,

يمكننا ان نسأل

"Is this the perfect expression

هل هذا هو التعبير المثالي

of psychological balance

للتوازن النفسي "للمرأة"

with respect to variables like youth and beauty and women's bodies?"

والذي يحترم شبابها و جمالها وانوثتها وجسدها ؟

I mean, is this the optimal environment

انا اعني هل هذه هي البيئة المناسبة التي

in which to raise our children?

نريد ان نربي بها أولادنا

Probably not. OK, so perhaps there's some place

حتما لا .. حسنا .. انا متأكد انه يوجد حلٌ ما

on the spectrum

في الوسط

between these two extremes

بين هذين الحلين المتطرفين

that represents a place of better balance.

والذي يمثل توازن مناسب لتلك القضية

Perhaps there are many such places --

وربما هنالك عدة حلول ..

again, given other changes in human culture

مرة أخرى .. وبالنظر الى الاختلافات في الثقافة الانسانية

there may be many peaks on the moral landscape.

ربما هنالك عدة انحرافات في المنظور الاخلاقي العام

But the thing to notice is that there will be

ولكن هنالك شيء يجب التنبه له

many more ways not to be on a peak.

ان هنالك كثير من الطرق الغير منحرفة والتي يمكن اعتمادها بصورة عامة

Now the irony, from my perspective,

والمثير للضحك بالنسبة لي من منظوري

is that the only people who seem to generally agree with me

ان الاشخاص الذين يوافقونني الرأي

and who think that there are right and wrong answers to moral questions

والذين يظنون انه يجب ان يكون هنالك مفاهيم صحيحة وخاطئة عامة للقضايا الاخلاقية

are religious demagogues of one form or another.

هم الرموز الدينية من مختلف الطوائف

And of course they think they have right answers to moral questions

صحيح انهم يظنون ان الاجوبة الصحيحة للقضايا الاخلاقية هي أجوبتهم ..

because they got these answers from a voice in a whirlwind,

لانهم يأتون بهذه الاجوبة جراء استماعهم " لصوت السماء "

not because they made an intelligent analysis of the causes

وليس لانهم خرجوا بها - الاجوبة - بعد تحليل منطقي وذكي لتلك القضايا

and condition of human and animal well-being.

بأخذ عين الاعتبار للوجود الانساني والحيواني

In fact, the endurance of religion

في الحقيقة وعلى اعتبار الاديان

as a lens through which most people view moral questions

كعدسات يُنظر من خلالها للقضايا الاخلاقية لمعظم الناس

has separated most moral talk

فقد قامت تلك الاديان بدفع الحديث عن القضايا الاخلاقية

from real questions of human and animal suffering.

بعيداً جدا عن الاسئلة الحقيقية والتي تخص عذاب الانسان والحيوان

This is why we spend our time

ونتيجة لهذا نحن نقضي معظم اوقاتنا

talking about things like gay marriage

نتحدث على امور تخص زواج الشواذ

and not about genocide or nuclear proliferation

بدلا من التحدث عن الابادات الجماعية او نزع السلاح النووي

or poverty or any other hugely consequential issue.

او الفقر او اي قضية هامة أُخرى

But the demagogues are right about one thing: We need

ولكنهم - الرموز الدينية - محقين فيما يخص ما نحتاج اليه

a universal conception of human values.

وهو مفهوم عالمي عن القيم الانسانية

Now, what stands in the way of this?

ولكن مالذي يمنع حدوث هذا

Well, one thing to notice is that we

حسنا . شيء واحد يمكن ملاحظته وهو

do something different when talking about morality --

اننا نقوم بتصرفات مختلفة عندما يأتي الامر للحديث عن القضايا الاخلاقية

especially secular, academic, scientist types.

وخاصة , العلمانية , العلمية .الاكاديمية

When talking about morality we value differences of opinion

فهندما نتحدث عن القضايا الاخلاقية ... فنحن نقدس اختلاف الاراء

in a way that we don't in any other area of our lives.

تقديسا يتجاوز جميع الامور الاخرى

So, for instance the Dalai Lama gets up every morning

فمثلا .. الدلالي لاما يستيقظ كل صباح

meditating on compassion,

ويفكر في التراحم

and he thinks that helping other human beings is an integral component

ويفكر كيف يمكن ان يساعد ابناء البشر بصورة شاملة

of human happiness.

للسعادة البشرية

On the other hand, we have someone like Ted Bundy;

وعلى الطرف الآخر شخص أخر مثل تيد بندي

Ted Bundy was very fond of abducting and raping

والذي كان مدمنا على اغتصاب

and torturing and killing young women.

وتعذيب النسوة وقتلهن

So, we appear to have a genuine difference of opinion

فنحن هنا نقدس اختلاف الاراء كل منهما

about how to profitably use one's time.

عن كيفية الاستفادة من وقته

Most Western intellectuals

فمعظم الازدواجين الغربيين

look at this situation

ينظرون لهذا الموقف

and say, "Well, there's nothing for the Dalai Lama

ويقولون " حسنا .. لايمكننا الجزم ان الدلاي لاما

to be really right about -- really right about --

هو الصحيح - الصحيح فعلا والذي يجب تعميم تصرفه -

or for Ted Bundy to be really wrong about

او ان تيد بندي هو الخاطىء تماما

that admits of a real argument

في مناقشة فعلية عن ذلك الامر "

that potentially falls within the purview of science.

حتى هنالك احتمال ان يتم الاستشهاد بالعلم

He likes chocolate, he likes vanilla.

فيقال " هذا يجب الفانيلا .. وهذا يحب الشوكولاته "

There's nothing that one should be able to say to the other

ولا يوجد شيء يمكن ان يقوله اي طرف للآخر

that should persuade the other."

والذي يمكن أن يؤدي الى اقناع احد الاطراف بوجهة نظر الطرف الآخر

Notice that we don't do this in science.

ولكن عندما نصل للعلم فنحن لا نفعل ذلك التقديس - في اختلاف الآراء -

On the left you have Edward Witten.

فعلى يسار الصورة لدينا " ادوراد ويتين "

He's a string theorist.

وهو عالم في نظرية الاوتار الفيزيائية

If you ask the smartest physicists around

واذا سألت عن اذكى عالم في المحيط العلمي

who is the smartest physicist around,

أذكى عالم فيزيائي

in my experience half of them will say Ed Witten.

بحسب علمي فإن نصف الاشخاص ستجيب انه " ادوراد ويتين "

The other half will tell you they don't like the question.

والنصف الآخر سوف يجيب " انه هذا السؤال لم يعجبه "

So, what would happen if I showed up at a physics conference

حسنا .. ماذا لو ظهرت انا في مؤتمر فيزيائي

and said,"String theory is bogus.

وقلت ان " نظرية الاوتار هزيلة

It doesn't resonate with me. It's not how I chose to

وهي لا تعني شيئاً لي ولا تعبر عني ولا اريد ان تكون نظرية الاوتار

view the universe at a small scale.

هي التي تعبر عن الجزئيات متناهية الصغر في الكون

I'm not a fan."

فأنا لم اعجب بها "

Well, nothing would happen because I'm not a physicist;

I don't understand string theory.

وانا لا افهم نظرية الاوتار

I'm the Ted Bundy of string theory.

I wouldn't want to belong to any string theory club that would have me as a member.

But this is just the point.

Whenever we are talking about facts

انه عندما نتحدث عن الحقائق

certain opinions must be excluded.

فهنالك آراء خاطئة تفند على الفور

That is what it is to have a domain of expertise.

لاننا نملك في هذا المجال ما يدعى ب " الخبرة "

That is what it is for knowledge to count.

وهنالك كم من " المعرفة " يؤخذ بعين الاعتبار

How have we convinced ourselves

فكيف نقنع انفسنا

that in the moral sphere there is no such thing as moral expertise,

انه في مجال الاخلاق لا يوجد ما يدعى بالخبرة او المعرفة

or moral talent, or moral genius even?

او شخص يمكن وصفه " له موهبة اخلاقية " او " عبقري اخلاقي "

How have we convinced ourselves

فكيف يمكننا ان نقنع انفسنا انه

that every opinion has to count?

يتوجب علينا تقبل جميع الاراء في الامور الاخلاقية

How have we convinced ourselves

وكيف يمكننا ان نقنع انفسنا انه

that every culture has a point of view

ان لكل ثقافة وجهة نظر

on these subjects worth considering?

يجب اخذها بعين الاعتبار

Does the Taliban

فهل لحركة طالبان وجهة نظر

have a point of view on physics

في امور الفيزياء

that is worth considering? No.

يمكن أخذها بعين الاعتبار ؟ حتما لا

How is their ignorance any less obvious

فكيف يمكن لجهلهم ان يكون اكثر شدةً

on the subject of human well-being?

في أمر مثل الوجود البشري

So, this, I think, is what the world needs now.

لذا اظن ان هذا ما يحتاجه العالم اليوم

It needs people like ourselves to admit

اشخاص كما نحن هنا بأن يعترفوا

that there are right and wrong answers

ان هنالك مفاهيم صحيحة وخاطئة

to questions of human flourishing,

عندما يتعلق الامر في الازدهار البشري

and morality relates

والقضايا الاخلاقية المتعلقة

to that domain of facts.

بالحقائق الواضحة

It is possible

ويمكن القول

for individuals, and even for whole cultures,

انه من الممكن ان يهتم الاشخاص - او ثقافات كاملة

to care about the wrong things,

بأمور خاطئة

which is to say that it's possible for them

واي بعبارة اخرى انه من الممكن

to have beliefs and desires that reliably lead

ان تكون معتقداتهم وافكارهم تقود

to needless human suffering.

الى تدهور الوجود الانساني ومعاناته

Just admitting this will transform our discourse about morality.

وفقط باعترافنا بوجود هذه الاحتمالية - لخطأ المعتقدات - تكفي بأن تغير أخلاقياتنا

We live in a world in which

فنحن اليوم نعيش في عالم

the boundaries between nations mean less and less,

تتلاشي فيه الحدود فينا بين الثقافات والدول يوما بعد يوم

and they will one day mean nothing.

ويوما ما لن يعود لتلك الحدود من وجود

We live in a world filled with destructive technology,

ونحن نعيش في عالم فيه تقنيات مدمرة

and this technology cannot be uninvented;

وهذه التقنايات لايمكن الاستغناء عنها

it will always be easier

ومن السهل جدا استخدامها

to break things than to fix them.

في التخريب بدلا من التصليح

It seems to me, therefore, patently obvious

لذا فمن الأولى كما هو واضح

that we can no more

اننا يجب ان لا نتهاون في بعض الامور

respect and tolerate

ولا نميل للتسامح او الاعتدال

vast differences in notions of human well-being

في الاختلافات الشديدة بين الدول فيما يخص الوجود البشري والقضايا الاخلاقية

than we can respect or tolerate vast differences

كما لا يمكن التهاون او التسامح في الاختلافات

in the notions about how disease spreads,

الكبيرة بين مفاهيم تفشي الامراض بين الدول

or in the safety standards of buildings and airplanes.

او قواعد السلامة للمطارات او المباني

We simply must converge

بكل بساطة يجب ان ندفع في اتجاه

on the answers we give to the most important questions in human life.

الحصول على اجوبة للاسئلة الاكثر اهمية للوجود البشري

And to do that, we have to admit that these questions have answers.

ولكي نقوم بهذا علينا اولا الاعتراف بان لتلك الاسئلة أجوبة صحيحة وخاطئة

Whether in this audience or people elsewhere in the world,

hearing some of this, may well be doing the

screaming-with-rage thing, after as well, some of them.

Language seems to be really important here.

When you're talking about the veil,

you're talking about women dressed in cloth bags.

I've lived in the Muslim world, spoken with a lot of Muslim women.

And some of them would say something else. They would say,

"No, you know, this is a celebration

لا .. فحجابنا هذا هو احتفال

of female specialness,

it helps build that and it's a result of the fact that" --

ولم يأتي عن عبث انما جاء نتيجة

and this is arguably a sophisticated psychological view --

وهذه - وجهة نظر فلسفية محددة -

"that male lust is not to be trusted."

نتيجة ان شهوة الرجل لا يمكن الوثوق بها "

I mean, can you engage in a conversation

فهل يمكنك ان تجيب على هكذا نوعية من الردود

with that kind of woman without seeming kind of cultural imperialist?

مع هذه النسوة دون ان تبدو كأنك " مستعمر ثقافي " تريد ان تفرض رأيك

Sam Harris: Yeah, well I think I tried to broach this in a sentence,

but the question is:

What is voluntary in a context

where men have certain expectations,

and you're guaranteed to be treated in a certain way

if you don't veil yourself?

قررت المرأة عدم ارتداء الحجاب هل يمكن ادعاء وجود حرية فيه - المجتمع - ؟

And so, if anyone in this room

وهكذا .. فمثلا في هذه الغرفة

wanted to wear a veil,

اي شخص يمكنه ان يرتدي حجاب ..

or a very funny hat, or tattoo their face --

او ان يوشم وشما .. او ان يرتدي قبعة مضحكة

I think we should be free to voluntarily do whatever we want,

واعتقد انك تملك الحرية الكاملة في ارتداء ما تريد

but we have to be honest about

ولكن يجب ان نكون واقعين

the constraints that these women are placed under.

فتلك النسوة نمت ضمن سلسلة من القيود

And so I think we shouldn't be so eager

واعتقد انه لا يتوجب علينا ان نتحمس

to always take their word for it,

لكي ندافع عنهن او نتحدث بالنيابة عنهن

especially when it's 120 degrees out

and you're wearing a full burqa.

CA: A lot of people want to believe in this

But can you reconcile that?

reconcile that with a world that doesn't become

one dimensional, where we all have to think the same.

Paint your picture of what

rolling the clock 50 years forward,

100 years forward, how you would like to think of

the world, balancing moral progress

في العالم بعد اعتماد منظورك في التقدم الاخلاقي

with richness.

SH: Well, I think once you admit

سام هاريس : حسنا .. عندما تُقر

that we are on the path toward understanding our minds

اننا نسير على طريق استيعاب عقولنا

at the level of the brain in some important detail,

وادمغتنا في جميع المجالات الهامة

then you have to admit

يمكنك حينها ان تُقر

that we are going to understand all of the positive

اننا سوف نفهم يوما كل الخواص الايجابية

and negative qualities

والسلبية

of ourselves in much greater detail.

So, we're going to understand positive social emotion

like empathy and compassion,

and we're going to understand the factors

that encourage it -- whether they're genetic,

whether they're how people talk to one another,

whether they're economic systems,

and insofar as we begin to shine light on that

we are inevitably going to converge

So, everything is not going to be up for grabs.

It's not going to be like

veiling my daughter from birth

to be confident and well-educated

in the context of men who do desire women.

I mean I don't think we need an NSF grant to know

that compulsory veiling is a bad idea --

نُقر ان الحجاب الالزامي هو فكرة سيئة

but at a certain point

وفي يوما ما

we're going to be able to scan the brains of everyone involved

سوف نستطيع ان نمسح " ادمغة " الجميع - المعنين في تلك القصة -

and actually interrogate them.

ومن ثم ندرسهم

Do people love their daughters

ونستنتج ان كان الاباء سوف يحبون بناتهم

just as much in these systems?

بصورة اكثر في هذه المعتقدات

And I think there are clearly right answers to that.

واعتقد انه يوما ما سنصل لاجوبة صريحة وصحيحة لتلك القضايا

CA: And if the results come out that actually they do,

are you prepared to shift your instinctive current judgment

on some of these issues?

SH: Well yeah, modulo one obvious fact,

that you can love someone

in the context of a truly delusional belief system.

So, you can say like, "Because I knew my gay son

was going to go to hell if he found a boyfriend,

وانا اعلم انه ذاهب للجحيم ان مارس الشذوذ

I chopped his head off. And that was the most compassionate thing I could do."

فقد قطعت راسه .. لان هذا التصرف الاكثر حبا يمكن القيام به معه

If you get all those parts aligned,

واذا جمعت كل هذه الاجزاء معا

yes I think you could probably be feeling the emotion of love.

سوف ترى انه يمكن فعلا الشعور بالحب في تلك الحالات

But again, then we have to talk about

ولكن مرة اخرى .. نحن نتحدث

well-being in a larger context.

It's all of us in this together,

not one man feeling ecstasy

and then blowing himself up on a bus.
