On a typical day at school,

I used to puzzle about a lot of things as a boy.

For example, what would it feel like

to be a dog?

Do fish feel pain? How about insects?

魚は痛みを感じるのかな？ 虫はどうだろう？

Was the Big Bang just an accident?

ビッグ・バンは たまたま 起きたことなのか？

And is there a God?

神様はいるのかな？

And if so, how are we so sure that it's a He and not a She?

いるんだったら なんで女じゃなく 男だって分かるんだろう

Why do so may innocent people and animals suffer terrible things?

なんで罪のない人や動物が ひどい目に遭うんだろう？

Is there really a plan for my life?

僕の将来は決まっているのかな？

Is the future yet to be written,

未来のことは これから書かれるのか？

or is it already written

それとも もう書かれているけど

and we just can't see it? But then, do I have free will?

見えないだけなのか？ でもそれなら 自分の意思ってあるの？

Who am I, anyway? Am I just a biological machine?

そもそも僕って何なんだろう？ ただ動くだけの生き物？

But then, why am I conscious?

だったら なんで考える ことができるんだろう？

What is consciousness? Will robots become conscious one day?

考えるってどういうこと？ ロボットも いつか 考えられるようになるかな？

I mean, I kind of assumed

そのうち誰かが 全部教えて くれるものだと思ってた

that some day I would be told the answers to all these questions.

I mean, someone must know, right?

きっと誰かが知っているはずだって

Huh. Guess what? No one knows.

ところがどっこい 誰も知らないんだ

Most of those questions puzzle me more now than ever.

子どもの頃の疑問は ますます 不思議になるばかり

But diving into them is exciting

でも あれこれ深く考えるのは面白いよ

because it takes you to the edge of knowledge,

知識の限界へと 連れて 行ってくれるんだから

and you never know what you'll find there.

何が見つかるか予想もつかない

So, two questions to kick off this series,
