Right now,

I feel fear.

In my life, I ain't met many people

that will readily admit when they are afraid.

That's called courage.

I have lived in and around St. Louis my entire life.

I remember the powers that be trying to use fear as a weapon.

The police response to a community in mourning was to use force

And all of these things have worked in the past.

But like I said, this time it was different.

Michael Brown's death and the subsequent treatment of the community

Michael Brown ရဲ့သေဆုံးမှုနဲ့ ရပ်ရွာရဲ့ နောက်ဆက်တွဲ သဘောထားက

led to a string of protests in and around Ferguson and St. Louis.

Ferguson နဲ့ St.Louis တွင်းနဲ့ ဝန်းကျင်မှာ ကန့်ကွက်ပွဲတွေ တသီကြီးဖြစ်စေခဲ့တယ်။

When I got out to those protests about the fourth or fifth day,

it was not out of courage;

See, I'm black.

I don't know if y'all noticed that.

But I couldn't sit in St. Louis, minutes away from Ferguson,

and not go see.

ထိုင်မနေနိုင်ခဲ့ဘူး။

So I got off my ass to go check it out.

When I got out there,

အဲဒီကို ရောက်သွားတော့

I found something surprising.

အံဩစရာတစ်ခု တွေ့ရှိခဲ့တယ်။

I found anger; there was a lot of that.

အမျက်ဒေါသကိုတွေ့ခဲ့တယ်၊ ဒါကအများကြီးပါ

But what I found more of was love.

ဒါပေမဲ့ ပိုပြီးတွေ့တာက ချစ်ခင်မှုပါ၊

People with love for themselves.

မိမိကိုယ်ကို ချစ်တဲ့လူတွေ၊

Love for their community.

သူတို့ရပ်ရွာအတွက် ချစ်ခင်မှုပါ။

And it was beautiful --

until the police showed up.

Then a new emotion was interjected into the conversation:

fear.

Now, I'm not going to lie;

ကဲ ကျွန်တော် မညာတော့ဘူးဗျာ၊

when I saw those armored vehicles,

သံချပ်ကာကားတွေ၊

and all that gear

အဲဒီတန်ဆာပလာတွေ၊

and all those guns

သေနတ်တွေ

and all those police

ရဲတွေကို မြင်တော့

I was terrified --

ကျွန်တော် လန့်သွားတယ်။

personally.

ကိုယ်တိုင်ကိုယ်ကျလေ။

And when I looked around that crowd,

လူစုကို လှည့်ပတ်ကြည့်လိုက်တော့

I saw a lot of people that had the same thing going on.

အလားတူဆက်ဖြစ်နေတဲ့ လူအများကြီးတွေ့ခဲ့တယ်။

But I also saw people with something else inside of them.

ဒါပေမဲ့ သူတို့အတွင်းဘက်မှာ တစ်ခုခုရှိတဲ့ လူတွေကိုပါ တွေ့ခဲ့တယ်။

That was courage.

ဒါက သတ္တိပါ။

See, those people yelled,

ကြည့်ပါ၊ လူတွေ အားပေးတယ်၊

and they screamed,

အော်ဟစ်ကြတယ်။


and they were not about to back down from the police.

သူတို့က ရဲတွေကနေ တပ်ခေါက်တော့မှာ မဟုတ်ဘူး။

They were past that point.

သူတို့က အဲဒီအမှတ်ကို ကျော်သွားတယ်။

And then I could feel something in me changing,

ဒီနောက် ကိုယ့်မှာ တစ်ခုခု ပြောင်းလဲတာ ခံစားရတယ်။

so I yelled and I screamed,

ဒါနဲ့ အားပေး၊ အော်ဟစ်ခဲ့ကာ

and I noticed that everybody around me was doing the same thing.

And there was nothing like that feeling.

ဒီခံစားချက်မျိုးနဲ့တူတာ တစ်ခုမှမရှိဘူး။

So I decided I wanted to do something more.

ဒါနဲ့ တစ်ခုခုထပ်လုပ်ချင်တယ်လို့ ဆုံးဖြတ်တယ်

I went home, I thought: I'm an artist. I make shit.

အိမ်ပြန်ပြီး တွေးမိတာက ငါက အနုပညာရှင်၊ ပေါက်ကရလုပ်တယ်။

So I started making things specific to the protest,

ဒါနဲ့ ကန့်ကွက်ဆန္ဒပြပွဲနဲ့ သီးသန့်ဆိုင်ရာ တွေ စလုပ်ခဲ့တယ်၊

things that would be weapons in a spiritual war,

စိတ်ပိုင်းဆိုင်ရာ စစ်ပွဲအတွက် လက်နက်ဖြစ်မယ့်ဟာတွေ၊

things that would give people voice

လူတွေရဲ့ သဘောထားကိုပေးမဲ့ဟာတွေ၊

and things that would fortify them for the road ahead.

ရှေဆက်မယ့်လမ်းအတွက် သူတို့ကို အားဖြည့်ပေးမှာတွေပေါ့။

I did a project where I took pictures of the hands of protesters

ဆန့်ကျင်သူတွေရဲ့ လက်ပုံတွေကိုယူပြီး ဒါတွေကို ဘုတ်ကပ်ထားတဲ့ တိုက်တွေနဲ့

and put them up and down the boarded-up buildings

ရပ်ကွက်ဆိုင်တွေရဲ့ အထက်အောက်မှာ ကပ်ထားတဲ့

and community shops.

ပရောဂျက်တစ်ခု လုပ်ခဲ့တယ်။

My goal was to raise awareness and to raise the morale.

ကျွန်တော့ရည်ရွယ်ချက်က အသိပေးနှိုးဆော်ဖို့၊ စိတ်ဓာတ်မြှင့်တင်ပေးဖို့ပါ။

And I think, for a minute at least,

ထင်တာက အနည်းဆုံး တစ်မိနစ်လောက်

it did just that.

ဒါပဲလုပ်ခဲ့တယ်။

Then I thought, I want to uplift the stories of these people

ဒီနောက် ဒီလူတွေရဲ့ ဇာတ်လမ်းတွေကို အားပေးချင်တယ်လို့ တွေးမိတယ်။

I was watching being courageous in the moment.

အဲဒီအခိုက်မှာ သတ္တိဖြစ်နေတာကို စောင့်ကြည့်နေခဲ့တယ်။

And myself and my friend,

ကျွန်တော်ကိုယ်တိုင်နဲ့ ကျွန်တော့မိတ်ဆွေ၊

and filmmaker and partner Sabaah Folayan

ရုပ်ရှင်ရိုက်သူ၊ အစုစပ် Sabaah Folayan ဟာ

did just that with our documentary,

မှတ်တမ်းတင်ရုပ်ရှင် ရိုက်ခဲ့တယ်။

"Whose Streets?"

"Whose Streets?"ပါ။

I kind of became a conduit

ကျွန်တော်ဟာ ကိုယ့်ကိုပေးထားတဲ့

for all of this courage that was given to me.

သတ္တိအားလုံးအတွက် ရေသွယ်မြောင်းလိုမျိုးဖြစ်လာခဲ့တယ်။

And I think that's part of our job as artists.

ဒါက အနုပညာရှင်တွေအနေနဲ့ ကိုယ့်အလုပ်ရဲ့ အစိတ်အပိုင်းလို့ထင်ပါတယ်။

I think we should be conveyors of courage in the work that we do.

ကျွန်တော်တို့ဟာ ကိုယ်လုပ်တဲ့အလုပ်မှာ သတ္တိ သယ်ဆောင်သူတွေဖြစ်သင့်ပါတယ်။

And I think that we are the wall between the normal folks

ကျွန်တော်တို့အားလုံးဟာ သာမန်လူတွေနဲ့ ကြောက်စိတ်နဲ့ အမုန်းကို ပျံ့နှံဖို့

and the people that use their power to spread fear and hate,

သူတို့ရဲ့အာဏာကိုသုံးသူတွေကြားက တံတိုင်းလို့ထင်မိတယ်။

especially in times like these.

အထူးသဖြင့် ဒီလိုအချိန်တွေပါ။

So I'm going to ask you.

ဒီတော့ သင်တို့ကိုမေးမယ်။

Y'all the movers and the shakers,

သင်တို့ လှုပ်ရှားသူတွေ၊ လှုပ်ခါသူတွေဟာ

you know, the thought leaders:

သိတဲ့အတိုင်း အတွေးအခေါ် ခေါင်းဆောင်တွေပါ။

What are you gonna do

နေ့စဉ် ကိုယ့်ကို တုတ်နှောင်ထားတဲ့

with the gifts that you've been given

ကြောက်စိတ်ကနေ အိုးစားခွဲဖို့

to break us from the fear the binds us every day?

ကိုယ်ကိုပေးထားတဲ့ လက်ဆောင်တွေနဲ့ ဘာလုပ်ကြမလဲ။

Because, see, I'm afraid every day.

အကြောင်းက နေ့တိုင်းကြောက်နေတော့

I can't remember a time when I wasn't.

မကြောက်ခဲ့တဲ့ ကာလကို မမှတ်မိနိုင်လို့ပါ။

But once I figured out that fear was not put in me to cripple me,

ဒါပေမဲ့ ကြောက်စိတ်ဟာ ကျွန်တော့ကို မသန်မစွမ်းမဖြစ်စေတာ မှန်းဆမိတာနဲ့

it was there to protect me,

ကျွန်တော့ကို ကာကွယ်ဖို့ ရှိလာတယ်၊

and once I figured out how to use that fear,

ဒီကြောက်စိတ်ကို ဘယ်လိုသုံးဖို့ မှန်းဆမိတာနဲ့

I found my power.

ကိုယ့်အစွမ်းကို တွေ့ခဲ့တယ်။
