So, I'm afraid.

मै भयभीत हूँ।

Right now,

अभी

on this stage,

इस मंच पर,

I feel fear.

मै भय महसूस कर रहा हूँ ।

In my life, I ain't met many people

जीवन मे, मै ऐसे बहुत कम लोगों से मिला हूँ

that will readily admit when they are afraid.

जो ये स्वीकार करते हैं कि वो भयभीत हैं ।

And I think that's because deep down,

और ऐसा इसलिए क्यूंकि

they know how easy it spreads.

वो जानते हैं कि ये कितनी आसानी से फैलता है.

See, fear is like a disease.

जैसा आप सभी जानते हैं, भय एक बीमारी की तरह है

When it moves, it moves like wildfire.

जो किसी जंगल की आग कि तरह फैलता है.

But what happens when,

लेकिन तब क्या होता है

even in the face of that fear,

जब आप डरे हुए होते हो, लेकिन

you do what you've got to do?

आप वही करते हो जो आपको करना है ?

That's called courage.

उसे ही साहस कहते हैं .

And just like fear,

और डर की तरह ही ,

courage is contagious.

साहस भी एक संक्रामक रोग है.

See, I'm from East St. Louis, Illinois.

मैं पूर्वी सेंट लुइस, इलेनॉइस से हूँ.

That's a small city

जोकि एक छोटा शहर है

across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri.

मिसिसिप्पी नदी के पार सेंट लुइस, मिसौरी से

I have lived in and around St. Louis my entire life.

मै अपनी सारी उम्र सेंट लुइस मे या उसके आस - पास ही रहा हूँ.

When Michael Brown, Jr.,

जब माइकल ब्राउन जूनियर,

an ordinary teenager,

एक साधारण सा किशोर,

was gunned down by police in 2014 in Ferguson, Missouri --

जिसे पुलिस ने 2014 मे गोली मार दी थी फ़र्गुसन, मिसौरी मे

another suburb, but north of St. Louis --

जोकि उत्तरी सेंट लुइस मे एक छोटी बस्ती है

I remember thinking,

मै सोचता हूँ कि

he ain't the first,

वो पहला नहीं था

and he won't be the last young kid to lose his life to law enforcement.

जिसे वहां कि कानूनी संस्था ने मार दिया था

But see, his death was different.

लेकिन उसकी मौत औरों से अलग थी

When Mike was killed,

क्यूंकि जब माइक को मारा गया था,

I remember the powers that be trying to use fear as a weapon.

मुझे याद है डर को हथियार की तरह इस्तेमाल किया गया था

The police response to a community in mourning was to use force

पुलिस ने एक शोकग्रसित समुदाय के खिलाफ बल प्रयोग किया

to impose fear:

उन्हें डराने के लिए :

fear of militarized police,

सैन्य पुलिस का भय,

imprisonment,

कारावास,

fines.

जुर्माना आदि लगाया.

The media even tried to make us afraid of each other

मीडिया ने भी कोशिश की हमें एक-दूसरे से डरने के लिए

by the way they spun the story.

कहानी को घुमा कर पेश किया

And all of these things have worked in the past.

और ये सभी बातें उनके पक्ष मे गयी.

But like I said, this time it was different.

लेकिन जैसा मैंने कहा था इस बार ये अलग था.

Michael Brown's death and the subsequent treatment of the community

माइकल ब्राउन कि मौत और समुदाय का उपचार

led to a string of protests in and around Ferguson and St. Louis.

फ़र्गुसन और सेंट लुइस मे विरोध प्रदर्शन का कारण बना.

When I got out to those protests about the fourth or fifth day,

जब मुझे चौथे या पांचवे दिन इस विरोध प्रदर्शन के बारे मे मालूम चला

it was not out of courage;

यह साहसिक तो था ही ;

it was out of guilt.

यह अपराधबोध से मुक्त था.

See, I'm black.

आप जानते हैं मेरी छवि काली है.

I don't know if y'all noticed that.

मुझे नहीं पता मैंने ऐसा क्यूँ कहा.

(Laughter)

(हास्य)

But I couldn't sit in St. Louis, minutes away from Ferguson,

लेकिन मै सेंट लुइस मे नहीं रुक सकता था जो, फ़र्गुसन से कुछ मिनट ही दूर है,

and not go see.

मै ये देखे बिन नहीं रह सकता था

So I got off my ass to go check it out.

इसलिए मै तुरंत ही वहां के लिए निकल पड़ा

When I got out there,

जब मै वहां पहुंचा,

I found something surprising.

मैंने कुछ आश्चर्यजनक देखा

I found anger; there was a lot of that.

लोगों मे गुस्सा था ; और बहुत ज्यादा था

But what I found more of was love.

लेकिन मैंने उससे भी ज्यादा प्यार देखा

People with love for themselves.

लोग का आपस मे प्रेम

Love for their community.

अपने समुदाय के प्रति प्रेम

And it was beautiful --

और ये बहुत खूबसूरत था --

until the police showed up.

जब तक पुलिस नहीं आयी थी

Then a new emotion was interjected into the conversation:

फिर बातचीत मे एक नयी भावना का समागम हुआ

fear.

भय

Now, I'm not going to lie;

मेरा यकीन करिए;

when I saw those armored vehicles,

जब मैंने उन सैन्य वाहनों

and all that gear

उस पर लगे हथियार,

and all those guns

और उन बंदूकों,

and all those police

और उन सभी पुलिस वालों को देखा तो

I was terrified --

मै डरा हुआ था

personally.

खुद मे

And when I looked around that crowd,

और मैंने अपने आस-पास लोगों को देखा

I saw a lot of people that had the same thing going on.

मैंने पाया बहुत से लोग मेरी तरह ही महसूस कर रहे हैं

But I also saw people with something else inside of them.

लेकिन मैंने उन सभी के भीतर कुछ और भी देखा

That was courage.

वो था साहस

See, those people yelled,

वो सब चिल्ला रहे थे

and they screamed,

वे सभी चिल्लाये

and they were not about to back down from the police.

और वो पुलिस को देखकर पीछे हटने वाले नहीं थे

They were past that point.

क्यूंकि वो उस डर को पार कर चुके थे

And then I could feel something in me changing,

और तब मैंने अपने अन्दर कुछ महसूस किया

so I yelled and I screamed,

मै भी चीखा और चिल्लाया

and I noticed that everybody around me was doing the same thing.

और मेरे आस-पास के सभी लोग ऐसा ऐसा कर रहे थे

And there was nothing like that feeling.

और अब वहां डर जैसा कुछ नहीं था

So I decided I wanted to do something more.

इसलिए मैंने कुछ और करने का सोचा

I went home, I thought: I'm an artist. I make shit.

मै घर वापस गया और सोचा मै कलाकार हूँ मैंने अभी तक सिर्फ बकवास कि है

So I started making things specific to the protest,

इसलिए मैंने विरोध के लिए विशिष्ट चीजों का निर्माण किया,

things that would be weapons in a spiritual war,

चीजें जो इस आध्यात्मिक युद्ध मे हथियार का काम करेंगी

things that would give people voice

चीजें जो लोगों को एक आवाज़ देंगी

and things that would fortify them for the road ahead.

और जो उन्हें आगे बढ़ने मे मदद करेंगी

I did a project where I took pictures of the hands of protesters

मैंने योजना तैयार कि जिसमे मैंने लोगों के हाथों के चित्र लिए

and put them up and down the boarded-up buildings

और उन्हें ऊपर - नीचे इमारतों पर

and community shops.

और दुकानों मे हर जगह लगाया

My goal was to raise awareness and to raise the morale.

मेरा लक्ष्य लोगों मे जागरूकता और मनोबल बढ़ाना था

And I think, for a minute at least,

और मैंने एक मिनट के लिए सोचा

it did just that.

और फिर वही किया

Then I thought, I want to uplift the stories of these people

फिर मैंने सोचा, मैं उत्थान करना चाहता हूं इन लोगों की कहानियों का

I was watching being courageous in the moment.

उस क्षण मै साहसिक महसूस कर रहा था

And myself and my friend,

और मै मेरा मित्र

and filmmaker and partner Sabaah Folayan

निर्माता और भागीदार सब्बह फोलायन

did just that with our documentary,

ने एक वृत्त चित्र बनाया,

"Whose Streets?"

" हूज स्ट्रीट्स ?"

I kind of became a conduit

मैं एक वाहक बन गया

for all of this courage that was given to me.

ये जो साहस मुझे प्राप्त हुआ था

And I think that's part of our job as artists.

और मै सोचता हूँ एक कलाकार के रूप मे ये हमारा काम था

I think we should be conveyors of courage in the work that we do.

मुझे लगता है कि हमें वाहक होना चाहिए उस सहस का जिसकी हम बात करते हैं

And I think that we are the wall between the normal folks

और मुझे लगता है कि हम दीवार हैं सामान्य लोगों

and the people that use their power to spread fear and hate,

और उन लोगों के बीच जो भय और घृणा फैलाते हैं

especially in times like these.

विशेषकर ऐसे समय मे.

So I'm going to ask you.

इसलिए मै आपसे पूछना चाहता हूँ

Y'all the movers and the shakers,

क्यों, वो सभी पहल करने वाले,

you know, the thought leaders:

जो सोच से जन नेता हैं

What are you gonna do

आप सब क्या करना चाहते हो

with the gifts that you've been given

उन उपहारों से जो आपको दिए गए हैं

to break us from the fear the binds us every day?

हमे हर दिन डरा कर तोड़ना चाहते हो ?

Because, see, I'm afraid every day.

क्यूंकि मै हर दिन डरा हुआ महसूस करता हूँ

I can't remember a time when I wasn't.

मुझे नही याद है कि कब मै डरा हुआ नहीं था

But once I figured out that fear was not put in me to cripple me,

एक बार मुझे ये मालूम चल जाये कि ये डर मुझे अपंग बनाने के लिए नही है

it was there to protect me,

ये मेरी सुरक्षा के लिए है

and once I figured out how to use that fear,

और इस डर का उपयोग मै कैसे करूं,

I found my power.

तब मै शक्तिशाली महसूस करूँगा
