Right now,

on this stage,

I feel fear.

هەست بە ترس دەکەم.

In my life, I ain't met many people

لە ژیانم، خەڵکێکی زۆرم نەبینیوە

that will readily admit when they are afraid.

دانی پێدابنێن کاتێک بەڕاستی دەترسن.

And I think that's because deep down,

پێـموابێ ئەمەش لەبەر ئەمەیە کە ڕاستیە،

they know how easy it spreads.

دەزانن کە چەندە بە ئاسانی بڵاو دەبێتەوە.

See, fear is like a disease.

دەبینی، ترس وەک نەخۆشی وایە.

When it moves, it moves like wildfire.

But what happens when,

بەڵام چی ڕوودەدات کاتێک،

even in the face of that fear,

you do what you've got to do?

That's called courage.

And just like fear,

courage is contagious.

See, I'm from East St. Louis, Illinois.

دەزانی، من لە ڕۆژهەڵاتی Stەوە هاتووم. لۆویەس، ئڵەنۆی.

That's a small city

across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri.

بە درێژایی ڕووباری میسیسیپی St. لۆویەس، میسۆری.

I have lived in and around St. Louis my entire life.

هەموو ژیانم لە St لویەس بەسەربردووە.

When Michael Brown, Jr.,

کاتێک مایکڵ برۆون، گەنج.،

an ordinary teenager,

was gunned down by police in 2014 in Ferguson, Missouri --

another suburb, but north of St. Louis --

I remember thinking,

But see, his death was different.

When Mike was killed,

I remember the powers that be trying to use fear as a weapon.

بەبیرم دێت کە دەسەڵات دارەکان هەوڵیان دەدا ترس وەک چەک بەکاربێنن.

The police response to a community in mourning was to use force

پۆلیس لەڕێگەی زەبرەوە وەڵامی کۆمەڵگاکەی دەداینەوە بەینیان

to impose fear:

بۆ سەپاندنی ترس:

fear of militarized police,

ترس لە پۆلیسی سەربازی،

imprisonment,

زیندانیکردن،

fines.

غەڕامەکردن،

The media even tried to make us afraid of each other

تەنانەت میدیاش هەوڵی دەدا وامان لێ بکا لەیەکتری بترسین

by the way they spun the story.

بەهەرحاڵ چیرۆکەکە بەو شێوەیە بوو.

And all of these things have worked in the past.

هەموو ئەو شتانە لە ڕابردوودا هەبوون.

But like I said, this time it was different.

بەڵام وەک ئاماژەم پێدا، ئەوکاتە جیاواز بوو.

Michael Brown's death and the subsequent treatment of the community

مردنەکەی میچاڵ بڕاون و مامەڵە کردن لەگەڵ کۆمەڵگا

led to a string of protests in and around Ferguson and St. Louis.

بەرەو ئاڕاستەی خۆپشاندان دەڕوات لە سەرانسەری فێرجسۆن و لویس.

When I got out to those protests about the fourth or fifth day,

کاتێک ڕۆژی چوارەم و پێنجەم هاتمە دەرەوە بۆ نێو خۆپشاندان،

it was not out of courage;

ئازایەتی نەبوو؛

it was out of guilt.

گوناهیش نەبوو.

See, I'm black.

دەبینی، من ڕەشم.

I don't know if y'all noticed that.

نازانم ئەگەر تێبینی ئەوەتان کردبێ.

(Laughter)

But I couldn't sit in St. Louis, minutes away from Ferguson,

بەڵام نەمتوانی لە سانلویس دنیشم کە چەند دەقەیەک لە فۆرگوسەنەوە دوورە،

and not go see.

نەچم بیبینم.

So I got off my ass to go check it out.

کەواتە هاتمە خوارەوە تا بگەڕێم.

When I got out there,

کاتێک گەیشتم بەوێ،

I found something surprising.

شتێکی سەرسوڕهێنەرم بینی.

I found anger; there was a lot of that.

توڕەیەکی زۆری لێ بوو.

But what I found more of was love.

بەڵام ئەوەی زیاتر بەدیم دەکرد خۆشەویستی بوو.

People with love for themselves.

خۆشەویستی خەڵک بۆ خۆی.

Love for their community.

خۆشەویستی بۆ کۆمەڵگاکەی.

And it was beautiful --

زۆر جوان بوو--

until the police showed up.

تا ئەوکاتەی پۆلیس دەرکەوت.

Then a new emotion was interjected into the conversation:

دواتر هەستێکی نوێ لە گفتوگۆدا لێکدرا:

fear.

ترس.

Now, I'm not going to lie;

ئێستا. درۆ ناکەم؛

when I saw those armored vehicles,

کاتێک ئەو زریپۆشانەم بینی،

and all that gear

ئەو هەموو ئۆتۆمبێل

and all those guns

و ئەو هەموو چەک

and all those police

و ئەو هەموو پۆلیسە

I was terrified --

تۆقیبووم--

personally.

من وەک خۆم.

And when I looked around that crowd,

کاتێک سەیری قەڵەباڵغیەکەی دەوروبەرم دەکرد،

I saw a lot of people that had the same thing going on.

دەمبینی کە زۆربەی خەڵک هەمان هەستیان هەبوو.

But I also saw people with something else inside of them.

بەڵام هەندێک شتی شاراوەشم تیا دەبینین.

کە ئازایەتی بوو.

That was courage.

See, those people yelled,

دەزانت، ئەو خەڵکە هاواریان دەکرد،

and they screamed,

هاواریان دەکرد،

and they were not about to back down from the police.

بۆ ئەوە نەبوو پۆلیسەکان پاشە کشە بکەن.

They were past that point.

ئەوان ئەو خاڵەیان تێپەڕاندبوو.

And then I could feel something in me changing,

دواتر ھەستم کرد شتێک لەمندا گۆڕاوە،

so I yelled and I screamed,

منیش ھاوارم دەکردو دەمقیژاند،

and I noticed that everybody around me was doing the same thing.

ھەستم دەکرد ھەموو ئەوانەی دەوروبەرم ھەمان شت دەکەن.

And there was nothing like that feeling.

ھیچ شتێک وەک ئەو ھەستە نەبوو.

So I decided I wanted to do something more.

بڕیارم دا ھەندێ شتی زیاتر بکەم.

I went home, I thought: I'm an artist. I make shit.

گەڕامەوە ماڵەوە، بیرم کردەوە: من ھونەرمەندم، قیناعێكم دروست کرد.

So I started making things specific to the protest,

دەستم کرد بە دروستکردنی شتەکان کە تایبەتن بە خۆپشاندان،

things that would be weapons in a spiritual war,

ئەو شتانەی دەبێتە چەک لە جەنگە ترسناکەکان،

things that would give people voice

ئەو شتەی کە دەنگی خەڵک دەگەیێنێت

and things that would fortify them for the road ahead.

ئەو شتانەی کە دەیان بەخشن بۆ ئەڕێگایانەی کە لەپێشیانە.

I did a project where I took pictures of the hands of protesters

دەستم کرد بە وێنەگرتنی دەستی خۆپشاندەران

and put them up and down the boarded-up buildings

لە بەشی سەرەوەی بینا بەرزەکانەوە فرێی بدەیە خوارەوە

and community shops.

لەگەڵ ھەموو دووکانەکان.

My goal was to raise awareness and to raise the morale.

ئامانجم ھۆشیار کردنەوە بوو بۆ بەرزکردنەوەی ورەی خەڵکەکە.

And I think, for a minute at least,

پێم وابێ، بەلانی کەم کەمتر لە خولەکێک،

it did just that.

تەنھا ئەوە بوو.

Then I thought, I want to uplift the stories of these people

بیرم کردەوە، دەبێت چیرۆکی ئەو خەڵکانە بەرز بکەمەوە

I was watching being courageous in the moment.

دەمبینی کە ئازا بوون لەو ساتەدا.

And myself and my friend,

خۆم و ھاوڕێکانم،

and filmmaker and partner Sabaah Folayan

فلمسازەکەم و ھاوڕێکەم صەباح فۆلیان

did just that with our documentary,

کایێک سەیری فلمەکەمان دەکردەوە

"Whose Streets?"

“لەسەر شەقامەکان؟”

I kind of became a conduit

بەجۆرێک ببومە سەرچاوەیەک

for all of this courage that was given to me.

بۆ ئەو ھەموو ئازایەتیەی کە بە من درابوو.

And I think that's part of our job as artists.

وابزانم ئەوە بەشێکە لە کاری ئێمە وەک ھونەرمەند.

I think we should be conveyors of courage in the work that we do.

پێم وابێت دەبێت ئێمە بوێریمان بگۆڕین بۆ ئەو کارەی دەیکەین.

And I think that we are the wall between the normal folks

وابزانم ئێمە بەربەستێکین لە نێوان خەڵکی ئاسای

and the people that use their power to spread fear and hate,

لەگەڵ ئەو خەڵکانەی کە ھێزی خۆیان بەکاردێنن بۆ بڵاوکردنەوەی ترس و رق،

especially in times like these.

بەتایبەتی لە کاتێکی ئەوھادا.

So I'm going to ask you.

کەواتە من پرسیار لە ئێوە دەکەم.

Y'all the movers and the shakers,

ئێوە ھەموو جموجۆڵتان ھەیە،

you know, the thought leaders:

دەزانی، بیرۆکەی سەرکردەکان:

What are you gonna do

چی دەکەین

with the gifts that you've been given

لەگەڵ ئەو دیاریانەی کە پێت بەخشراون

to break us from the fear the binds us every day?

بۆ ئەوەی ئەو ترسەمان بشکێنن ھەموو ڕۆژێک لە پشت ئێمەوە ؟

Because, see, I'm afraid every day.

لەبەر ئەوەی،دەزانی، من ھەموو ڕۆژێک دەترسام.

I can't remember a time when I wasn't.

بەبیرم نایە ڕۆژێک نەترسابێتم.

But once I figured out that fear was not put in me to cripple me,

بەڵام من بۆم دەرکەوت ئەو ترسە کاریگەری خراپی نەبووە لەسەر من،

it was there to protect me,

ئەوە لەوێ بوو بۆ پاراستنی من،

and once I figured out how to use that fear,

ھەروەھا زانیم کە چۆن ئەو ترسە بەکاربێنم،

I found my power.

من ھێزی خۆمم دۆزیەوە.
