So, I'm afraid.

I feel fear.

In my life, I ain't met many people

지금껏 살면서 두려울 때 두렵다고 바로 인정할 수 있는 사람을

that will readily admit when they are afraid.

많이 만나보지 못했습니다.

And I think that's because deep down,

아마도 마음 깊은 곳에

they know how easy it spreads.

두려움은 쉽게 전염된다는 사실을 알고 있기 때문이겠지요.

See, fear is like a disease.

공포는 질병과 비슷합니다.

When it moves, it moves like wildfire.

공포가 전염되기 시작하면 순식간에 퍼집니다.

But what happens when,

하지만 공포감에 직면했을 때

even in the face of that fear,

우리가 마땅히 해야할 일을 한다면

you do what you've got to do?

무슨 일이 일어날까요?

That's called courage.

우리의 할 일은 용기를 내는 것입니다.

And just like fear,

그리고 공포심과 마찬가지로

courage is contagious.

See, I'm from East St. Louis, Illinois.

That's a small city

across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, Missouri.

I have lived in and around St. Louis my entire life.

저는 평생 그 지역에서 살았습니다.

When Michael Brown, Jr.,

2014년 어느날 마이클 브라운 주니어라는

an ordinary teenager,

한 평범한 십대 소년이

was gunned down by police in 2014 in Ferguson, Missouri --

세인트 루이스 북쪽에 있는 미주리 주의 퍼거슨 지역에서

another suburb, but north of St. Louis --

경찰이 쏜 총에 맞았습니다.

I remember thinking,

저는 당시 생각했습니다.

he ain't the first,

처음 있는 일이 아니었고

and he won't be the last young kid to lose his life to law enforcement.

법의 집행이라는 이름으로 앞으로도 젊은이들을 잃게 될거라고 말이죠.

But see, his death was different.

하지만 그의 죽음은 달랐습니다.

When Mike was killed,

마이크가 사망했을 때

I remember the powers that be trying to use fear as a weapon.

권력층은 공포라는 무기를 사용했습니다.

The police response to a community in mourning was to use force

지역 사회가 한 젊은이의 죽음을 애도할 때 경찰은 공권력을 이용해

to impose fear:

공포심을 불러일으켰지요.

fear of militarized police,

무장 경찰에 대한 공포

imprisonment,

감금

fines.

벌금에 대한 공포 말입니다.

The media even tried to make us afraid of each other

언론 역시 우리 서로를 두려워하도록 만들었습니다.

by the way they spun the story.

이야기를 그럴듯하게 지어내더군요.

And all of these things have worked in the past.

과거에는 이런 것들이 통했을지 몰라도

But like I said, this time it was different.

제가 말씀드렸죠. 예전과는 달랐습니다.

Michael Brown's death and the subsequent treatment of the community

마이클 브라운의 죽음 이후 공권력이 지역 사회를 다루는 방법에 대한

led to a string of protests in and around Ferguson and St. Louis.

불만으로 퍼거슨과 세인트 루이스에서 항의 행렬이 이어졌습니다.

When I got out to those protests about the fourth or fifth day,

제가 넷째날인가 다섯째 날인가 시위에 참여했는데

it was not out of courage;

그건 저에게 용기가 생겨서가 아니었습니다.

it was out of guilt.

바로 죄책감 때문이었죠.

See, I'm black.

저는 흑인입니다.

I don't know if y'all noticed that.

혹시 몰랐던 분 계시나요?

But I couldn't sit in St. Louis, minutes away from Ferguson,

퍼거슨 근처에 살면서 가만히 앉아있을 수가 없었습니다.

and not go see.

제 눈으로 직접 봐야했지요.

So I got off my ass to go check it out.

그래서 그곳으로 갔습니다.

When I got out there,

도착했을 때

I found something surprising.

놀라운 광경을 목격했습니다.

I found anger; there was a lot of that.

물론 그곳은 사람들의 분노로 가득찼습니다.

But what I found more of was love.

하지만 저는 사랑을 더 느꼈습니다.

People with love for themselves.

자신에 대한 사랑

Love for their community.

지역 사회를 향한 사랑이었지요.

And it was beautiful --

아름다웠습니다.

until the police showed up.

경찰이 나타나기 전까지는요.

Then a new emotion was interjected into the conversation:

분노와 사랑이 뒤엉킨 가운데 곧 새로운 감정이 투입되었습니다.

fear.

그건 바로 공포였지요.

Now, I'm not going to lie;

제가 거짓말하는게 아니라

when I saw those armored vehicles,

현장의 무장 차량과

and all that gear

온갖 무기와

and all those guns

온갖 총과

and all those police

경찰들을 봤을 때

I was terrified --

두려웠습니다.

personally.

저 개인적으로요.

And when I looked around that crowd,

주변을 둘러보니

I saw a lot of people that had the same thing going on.

다른 사람들 역시 비슷한 감정을 느낀 것 같았습니다.

But I also saw people with something else inside of them.

하지만 그들 안에 있는 또다른 감정을 보았습니다.

That was courage.

그건 바로 용기었지요.

See, those people yelled,

사람들은 소리를 지르고

and they screamed,

고함쳤습니다.

and they were not about to back down from the police.

경찰에게 굴복하지 않겠다는 의지였지요.

They were past that point.

사람들은 두려움의 선을 넘었습니다.

And then I could feel something in me changing,

저 역시도 안에서 무언가 꿈틀대는 것이 느껴졌습니다.

so I yelled and I screamed,

그래서 저도 소리치고 고함을 질렀습니다.

and I noticed that everybody around me was doing the same thing.

제 주변 모두가 같은 행동을 하고 있었지요.

And there was nothing like that feeling.

다른 어떤 곳에도 느껴보지 못한 감정이었습니다.

So I decided I wanted to do something more.

저는 다른 무언가를 하기로 결심했습니다.

I went home, I thought: I'm an artist. I make shit.

집에 가서 생각했지요. '난 예술가잖아. 뭔가를 만들잖아.'

So I started making things specific to the protest,

그래서 항의 행렬에 필요한 걸 만들기 시작했습니다.

things that would be weapons in a spiritual war,

그 영적 전쟁에서 무기가 되어줄 수 있는

things that would give people voice

길에서 그들에게 힘을 실어줄 수 있는

and things that would fortify them for the road ahead.

작품을 만들었습니다.

I did a project where I took pictures of the hands of protesters

시위자들의 손을 사진 찍어서

and put them up and down the boarded-up buildings

건물과 마을 상점에

and community shops.

붙였습니다.

My goal was to raise awareness and to raise the morale.

사람들의 관심을 이끌어내고 시위자들의 사기를 높이기 위해서였죠.

And I think, for a minute at least,

그리고 잠시동안 그 정도면

it did just that.

충분하다고 생각했습니다.

Then I thought, I want to uplift the stories of these people

그러고 나서 내 눈앞에서 용기를 내고 있는 사람들의 이야기를

I was watching being courageous in the moment.

큰 소리로 말하고 싶다는 생각이 들었습니다.

And myself and my friend,

그래서 저는 제 친구이자 감독이자 파트너인

and filmmaker and partner Sabaah Folayan

사바 폴라얀과 함께

did just that with our documentary,

다큐멘터리 영화 "Whose Streets (누구의 거리인가)?"를

"Whose Streets?"

제작했습니다.

I kind of became a conduit

제가 이 상황에서 느꼈던 용기라는 감정을

for all of this courage that was given to me.

다른 사람들에게도 전해주는 역할을 맡게 되었습니다.

And I think that's part of our job as artists.

이것이 아티스트로써 제가 할 수 있는 일의 하나라고 생각했습니다.

I think we should be conveyors of courage in the work that we do.

사람들이 보여준 용기를 작품을 통해 전달해야 한다고 생각했습니다.

And I think that we are the wall between the normal folks

그리고 이런 시기에 권력을 이용해 공포심과 증오를 퍼트리는 사람들과

and the people that use their power to spread fear and hate,

선량한 시민들을 구별짓는

especially in times like these.

장벽이 되어 주어야겠다고 생각했지요.

So I'm going to ask you.

질문 하나 드리겠습니다.

Y'all the movers and the shakers,

여러분 모두 어떤 분야에서 실력자 혹은

you know, the thought leaders:

전문가신가요?

What are you gonna do

여러분은 그 재능을 어떻게 이용하시겠습니까?

with the gifts that you've been given

매일의 삶에서 공포심으로 휩싸일 때

to break us from the fear the binds us every day?

그걸 이겨내기 위해서 말입니다.

Because, see, I'm afraid every day.

전 매일 두렵습니다.

I can't remember a time when I wasn't.

두렵지 않은 순간을 찾기가 어려울 정도지요.

But once I figured out that fear was not put in me to cripple me,

하지만 그 공포심은 내 안에서 나를 갉아먹는 게 아니라

it was there to protect me,

나를 보호한다는 사실을 알게되자

and once I figured out how to use that fear,

그리고 공포심을 어떻게 다루어야 할지 깨닫게 되자

I found my power.

내 안에 있는 힘을 발견했습니다.
