Carolyn Porco: Could a Saturn moon harbor life?

Two years ago here at TED

دوو ساڵ بەر لە ئێستا لێرە لە TED

I reported that we had discovered

ڕامگەیاند کە

at Saturn, with the Cassini Spacecraft,

لە ساترن، بە کەشتی ئاسمانی کاسینی

an anomalously warm and geologically active region

گەرمیەکی نائاسایی و ھەرێمێکی چالاک

at the southern tip of the small Saturnine moon

لە سەرەنوکی مانگی ساتورنی بچوکەوە

Enceladus, seen here.

ئینسێلادوس، ئێرە بینرا، دۆزیوەتەوە.

This region seen here for the first time

ئەم هەرێمە بۆ یەکەم جار لێرە بینرا

in the Cassini image taken in 2005. This is the south polar region,

لەم وێنەی کاسانیە لە ٢٠٠٥ گیراوە هەرێمی جەمسەری باشورە،

with the famous tiger-stripe fractures crossing the south pole.

بەهۆی شێوەی شێری بەناوبانگی هێڵی ژێر جەمسەری باشور دەبڕێت.

And seen just recently in late 2008,

و لە کۆتایی ساڵی ۲٠٠۸ بینرا،

here is that region again,

لێرە دووبارە لەم هەرێمە،

now half in darkness because the southern hemisphere

ئێستا نیوەی لە تاریکیە چونکە نیوەگۆی باشوری زەوی

is experiencing the onset of August

and eventually winter.

And I also reported that we'd made this mind-blowing discovery --

this once-in-a-lifetime discovery

ئەم دۆزینەوە نایابە

of towering jets

بورکانێکی خێرا

erupting from those fractures at the south pole,

هەڵدەچێت لە شکستەکان لە جەمسەری باشور،

consisting of tiny water ice crystals

پێک دێت لە کریستاڵی بەستەڵەکی ئاوی ورد

accompanied by water vapor

بەهۆی بوخاری ئاوەوە

and simple organic compounds like carbon dioxide and methane.

و ئاوێتەی ئەندامی سادە وەک دوانە ئۆکسیدی کاربۆن و میسان لەگەڵە.

And at that time two years ago

دوو ساڵ لەمەوبەر

I mentioned that we were speculating

ئاماژەم پێدا ئێمە ئەندێشەی دەکەین

that these jets might in fact be geysers,

کە ئەم فیچقانە ببێتە کانی ئاوی کوڵێنەر،

and erupting from pockets

و هەڵبچێت لە گیرفان

or chambers of liquid water underneath the surface,

یان ژوورەکانی ئاوی شلە بکەونە ژێر رووی مانگەکە،

but we weren't really sure.

بەڵام لە ڕاستیدا ئێمە زۆر دڵنیا نەبووین.

However, the implications of those results --

بەهەرحاڵ، ئەم ئەنجامانەــ

of a possible environment within this moon

ژینگەیەکی گونجاو لەناو ئەم مانگە

that could support prebiotic chemistry,

لەوانە یتوانێت پشتگیری زیندەگی بکات،

and perhaps life itself --

و لەوانەیە ژیانیش هەبێت،

were so exciting that, in the intervening two years,

شتێکی باشە کە لە ماوەی دوو ساڵدا

we have focused more on Enceladus.

تیشکی زیاترمان خستە سەر مانگی ئینسلادیۆس.

We've flown the Cassini Spacecraft

ئێمە کەشتی ئاسمانی کاسینیمان زۆر جار

by this moon now several times,

بەهۆی ئەم مانگەوە فڕاندووە.

flying closer and deeper into these jets,

نزیکتر و قوڵتر دەفڕێت بۆ ناو ئەم فیچقانە،

into the denser regions of these jets,

بۆ ناو هەرێمی پڕتری ئەم فیچقانە،

so that now we have come away with some

کە ئێمە ئێستا جێی دەهێڵین بە هەندێک

very precise compositional measurements.

پێوانەی پێکهاتەی زۆر تەواو.

And we have found

هەروەها تێبینیمان کرد

that the organic compounds coming from this moon

کە پێکهاتەی ئەندامی لەم مانگەوە دێت

are in fact more complex than we previously reported.

کە لەڕاستیدا زۆر ئاڵۆزترە لەوەی پێشتر ئاماژەمان پێدا.

While they're not amino acids,

لە کاتێکدا ئەوان ترشی ئەمینی نین،

we're now finding things like

ئێستا ئێمە ئەم شتانە دەدۆزینەوە وەکو

propane and benzene,

پڕۆپان و بەنزین،

hydrogen cyanide, and formaldehyde.

هایدرۆجینی سیانی و فۆڕمەڵدیهاید.

And the tiny water crystals here

و کریستاڵە ئاوە وردەکان هەن

now look for all the world

ئێستا سەیری هەموو جیهان بکە

like they are frozen droplets of salty water,

وەک دڵۆپێکی زۆر بچوکی بەستوی ئاوی خوێیی دێتە بەر چاو،

which is a discovery that suggests

ئەم دۆزینەوەی پێشنیار دەکات

that not only do the jets come from

کە تەنها فریچکەکان نایەن لە

pockets of liquid water,

پاکەتی ئاوی شل،

but that that liquid water is in contact with rock.

بەڵام ئەو ئاوی شلە لە پەیوەندیە لەگەڵ بەرد.

And that is a circumstance

و ئەو بارودۆخەیە

that could supply the chemical energy

کە توانی وزەی کیمیاوی دابین بکات

and the chemical compounds needed to sustain life.

و ئاوێتەی ژیان پێویستی پێیەتی بۆ مانەوەی ژیان

So we are very encouraged by these results.

و ئێمە زۆر هاندراین بەو ئامانجانە.

And we are much more confident now than we were two years ago

و ئێستا ئێمە زۆر دڵنیاتر بوین لە دوو ساڵ بەر لە ئێستا

that we might indeed

لە راستیدا لەوانەیە ژیان لە

have on this moon, under the south pole,

لەسەر ئەو مانگە هەبێت، لە ژێر جەمسەری باشور،

an environment or a zone that is hospitable to living organisms.

ژینگە یان ناوچەیەک کە میوان دۆستە بۆ ژیانی زیندەوەران.

Whether or not there are living organisms there, of course,

کە زیندەوەری لێبێت یان نا، بەدڵنیایەوە،

is an entirely different matter.

بەتەواوی بابەتێکی جیاوازە.

And that will have to await the arrival,

کە چاوەڕێ دەکرێت بگەڕێتەوە،

back at Enceladus,

لە ئینسێڵادوسی،

of the spacecrafts, hopefully some time in the near future,

specifically equipped to address that particular question.

But in the meantime I invite you to imagine the day

when we might journey to the Saturnine system,

and visit the Enceladus interplanetary geyser park,

just because we can.
