I haven't told many people this,

ئەمەم بۆ چەندین کەس باسم نە کردووە،

but in my head, I've got

بەڵام لەناو مێشکی خۆمدا،

thousands of secret worlds all going on

هەزارەها نهێنی دونیام پاراستووە

all at the same time.

لە هەموو کاتەکاندا.

I am also autistic.

هەروەها من توشبوویەکی ئۆتیزمم.

People tend to diagnose autism

خەڵک بە شێوازێکی هەڵە لە ئۆتیزم دەڕوانن

with really specific check-box descriptions,

وەک باسکردنی بابەتەکە لە چوارچێوەیەکی دیاریکراودا،

but in reality, it's a whole variation as to what we're like.

For instance, my little brother,

he's very severely autistic.

He's nonverbal. He can't talk at all.

But I love to talk.

People often associate autism

with liking maths and science and nothing else,

but I know so many autistic people

بەڵام من زۆر توشبووی ئۆتیزم دەناسم کە

who love being creative.

پێیان خۆشە داهێنەر بن.

But that is a stereotype,

بەڵام ئەوە ڕاییەکی گشتییە،

and the stereotypes of things

ڕا گشتییەکانیش دەربارەی شتەکان

are often, if not always, wrong.

ئەگەر هەمیشەش نەبێت، زۆر جار هەڵەن.

For instance, a lot of people

بۆ نمونە، زۆرێک لە خەڵکی

think autism and think "Rain Man" immediately.

نەخۆشی ئۆتیزم لەگەم فیلمی "پیاوی باران" پێکەوەدەبەستن.

That's the common belief,

ئەوە بیرو ڕایەکی باوە،

that every single autistic person is Dustin Hoffman,

and that's not true.

But that's not just with autistic people, either.

نەک هەر تەنها لە ناو کەسە ئۆتیزمەکاندا.

I've seen it with LGBTQ people,

with women, with POC people.

لەناو ئافرەتان، و کەسانی ڕەنگ جیاواز.

People are so afraid of variety

خەڵکی زۆر لە جیاوازی دەترسن

that they try to fit everything into a tiny little box

ئەوان هەوڵ دەدەن هەموو شتێک بخەنە ناو چوارچێوەیەکی بچووک

with really specific labels.

لەگەڵ نیشانەیەکی دیاریکراودا.

This is something that actually

لەڕاستیدا ئەمە شتێکە

happened to me in real life:

لە ژیانی ڕاستەقینەی مندا ڕوویداوە:

I googled "autistic people are ..."

من لە گووگڵ نوسیم" کەسە ئۆتیزمەکان..."

and it comes up with suggestions

چەندین پێشنیاری پێشکەش کرد

as to what you're going to type.

دەتوانیت هەرشتێک کە دەتەوێ بینوسیت.

I googled "autistic people are ..."

بە نوسینی" کەسی ئۆتیزم..."

and the top result was "demons."

یەکەم ئەنجام "جنۆکە" دەرچوو".

That is the first thing that people think

ئەوە یەکەم شتە کە خەڵکی بیری لێ دەکەنەوە

when they think autism.

کاتێک بیر لە ئۆتیزم دەکەنەوە.

They know.

ئەوان دەزانن.

One of the things I can do because I'm autistic —

یەکێک لەو شتانەی دەتوانم بیکەم چونکە کەسێکی ئۆتیزم -

it's an ability rather than a disability —

ئەوەیە کە توانادارم نەک بێ توانا -

is I've got a very, very vivid imagination.

ئەندێشەیەکی زۆر زۆر ڕۆشنم هەیە.

Let me explain it to you a bit.

با کەمێک بۆتان ڕوون بکەمەوە.

It's like I'm walking in two worlds most of the time.

وەکو ئەوەیە کە من لە ناو ٢ جیهاندا بژیم.

There's the real world, the world that we all share,

جیهانێکی ڕاستەقینە، هەموومان خاوەنین و هەموو هاوبەشین،

and there's the world in my mind,

لەگەڵ جیهانە تایبەتییەکی مێشکی من،

and the world in my mind is often so much more real

جیهانی مێشکی من زۆربەی جار ڕاستەقینەترە

than the real world.

لە جیهانی ڕاستی.

Like, it's very easy for me to let my mind loose

چونکە، زۆر ئاسانە بۆ من ڕێگە بدەم مێشکم گۆڕانکاری بکات

because I don't try and fit myself into a tiny little box.

لە بەرئەوەی من هەوڵ نادەم خۆم بخەمە ناو چوارچێوەیەکی بچووک.

That's one of the best things about being autistic.

ئەوە یەکێکە لە باشترین شتەکان لە بوون بە ئۆتیزم.

You don't have the urge to do that.

هیچ فشارێکت لەسەر نیە بۆ ئەنجامدانی ئەوە.

You find what you want to do,

ئەوە دەدۆزیتەوە کە دەتەوێت ئەنجامی بدەیت،

you find a way to do it, and you get on with it.

ڕێگایەک دەدۆزیتەوە بۆ ئەنجامدانی، و لەگەڵی بەردەوام دەبیت.

If I was trying to fit myself into a box,

ئەگەر هەوڵم دابا خۆم قەتیس بکەم،

I wouldn't be here, I wouldn't have achieved

من لێرە نە دەبووم، هەروەها سەرکەوتوو نەدەبووم

half the things that I have now.

لە هەبوونی نیوەی ئەو شتانەی کە ئێستا هەمە.

There are problems, though.

هەرچەندە چەندین کێشە هەیە.

There are problems with being autistic,

لەگەڵ بوون بە ئۆتیزم چەندین کێشە دەبێت،

and there are problems with having too much imagination.

چەندین کێشە بوونی دەبێت لەگەڵ خەیاڵکردنی زۆر.

School can be a problem in general,

بە گشتی قوتابخانەش دەبێتە کێشە،

but having also to explain to a teacher

بەڵام ڕوونکردنەوەی ئەوە بۆ مامۆستایەک

on a daily basis

هەموو ڕۆژێک

that their lesson is inexplicably dull

کە وانەکان زۆر بێزارکەرن

and you are secretly taking refuge

و تۆش بە نهێنی ئاوەرەیەکەیت پەنا داوە

in a world inside your head in which you are not in that lesson,

لە جیهانی مێشکی خۆتدا و تۆ لەناو ئەو وانەیەدا نیت و بێ ئاگایت،

that adds to your list of problems.

ئەمەش زیاد دەبێت بۆ لیستی کێشەکانت.

Also, when my imagination takes hold,

کاتێک خەیەڵەکانم باڵادەست دەبن،

my body takes on a life of its own.

جەستەم ژیانێکی تایبەت بەخۆی هەڵدەگرێت.

When something very exciting happens in my inner world,

کاتێک شتێکی زۆر خۆش لە جیهانی ناوەوەی مندا ڕوودەدات،

I've just got to run.

بەرەو ڕووی ڕادەکەم.

I've got to rock backwards and forwards,

بەرە پێش و بەرەو دوا دێم و دەچم،

or sometimes scream.

یان هەندێک جارهاوار دەکەم.

This gives me so much energy,

ئەمەش ووزەیەکی زۆرم پێ دەبەخشێت،

and I've got to have an outlet for all that energy.

و دەرچەیەک بەدەست دەهێنم بۆ ئەو هەموو ووزەیە.

But I've done that ever since I was a child,

تەنانەت بە منداڵیش ئەوەم ئەنجام دەدا،

ever since I was a tiny little girl.

هەمیشە کاتێک کچێکی زۆر بچوکیش بووم.

And my parents thought it was cute, so they didn't bring it up,

دایک و باوکیشم زۆر ئەوەیان لا جوان بوو،

but when I got into school,

بەڵام کاتێک چوومە قوتابخانە،

they didn't really agree that it was cute.

بەو جوانییە ڕازی نەبوون.

It can be that people don't want to be friends

دەکرێت ئەو کەسانە نەیانەوێت هاوڕێیەتی کەسێک بکەن

with the girl that starts screaming in an algebra lesson.

کە کچێکە و دەست دەکات بە هاوارکردن لەناو وانەی زانستی جەبردا.

And this doesn't normally happen in this day and age,

ئێستا ئەم شتانە بە ئاسایی ڕوونادەن،

but it can be that people don't want to be friends with the autistic girl.

بەڵام دەکرێت خەڵک هاوڕێیەتی لەگەڵ کچی ئۆتیزم دا نەبەستن.

It can be that people don't want to associate

دەکرێت خەڵک نەیانەوێت هاوبەشی بکەن

with anyone who won't or can't fit themselves

لەگەڵ هەر کەسێک لەگەڵیان نەگونجێت

into a box that's labeled normal.

لەناو چوارچێوایەکدا وەک نیشانەیەکی ئاسایی.

But that's fine with me,

بەڵام ئەوە لەگەڵ مندا گونجاوە،

because it sorts the wheat from the chaff,

چونکە ئەوە وەک گەنم وایە لەناو پوش و پەڵاشدا،

and I can find which people are genuine and true

هەروەها دەتوانم ئەو کەسانە بدۆزمەوە کە ڕاست و درووستن

and I can pick these people as my friends.

دەتوانم ئەم خەڵکانە هەڵبژێرم وەک هاوڕێی خۆم.

But if you think about it, what is normal?

ئەگەر بیر بکەیتەوە، چ شتێک ئاساییە؟

What does it mean?

مانای چی دەدات؟

Imagine if that was the best compliment you ever received.

خەیاڵ بکە ئەگەر ئەوە باشترین ستایش بێت تا ئێستا وەرتگرتبێت.

"Wow, you are really normal."

"واو، تۆ بەڕاستی کەسێکی ئاساییت"

(Laughter)

But compliments are,

بەڵام ستایشەکان ئەوانەن،

"you are extraordinary"

"کە تۆ کەسێکی نا ئاساییت"

or "you step outside the box."

".هەنگاو بۆ دەرەوەی سندوقەکە دەنێیت"

It's "you're amazing."

"تۆ سەرنجڕاکێشیت"

So if people want to be these things,

ئەگەر خەڵکی ئەم شتانەیان بوێت،

why are so many people striving to be normal?

بۆچی زۆربەی خەڵکی هەوڵ دەدەن بۆ ئەوەی ئاسایی بن؟

Why are people pouring their brilliant individual light into a mold?

بۆچی خەڵکی درەوشانەوەی ڕووناکی خۆیان دەڕێژنە ناو گۆڕ؟

People are so afraid of variety that they try and force everyone,

خەڵک زۆر لە جیاوازی دەترسن بۆیە هەموو کەسێک ناچار بەوە دەکەن،

even people who don't want to or can't, to become normal.

تەنانەت ئەو کەسانەشی کا ناتوانن و نایانەوێت، ئاسایی بن.

There are camps for LGBTQ people

چەندین خێوەتگە هەیە بۆ کەسانی هاوڕەگەز خواز

or autistic people to try and make them this "normal,"

یان بۆ کەسانی ئۆتیزم و هەوڵ دەدەن بیانکەنە کەسێکی ئاسایی،

and that's terrifying that people would do that in this day and age.

ئەوەش زۆر ترسناکە کە خەڵک بیەوێت لەم تەمەنەدا ئەوە بکات.

All in all, I wouldn't trade my autism and my imagination for the world.

هەمووی ئەمەیە، من نامەوێت بازرگانی بە خەیاڵەکانمەوە بکەم بۆ جیهان.

Because I am autistic,

لەبەرئەوەی من توشبووی ئۆتیزمم،

I've presented documentaries to the BBC,

بەڵگە نامەکانم بۆ بی بی سی پێشکەش کردووە،

I'm in the midst of writing a book,

هەروەها من خەریکی نوسینی کتێبێکم،

I'm doing this — this is fantastic —

من ئەنجامی دەدەم__ زۆر نایاب دەبێت__

and one of the best things that I've achieved,

یەکێک لە باشترین شتەکان کە من پێی گەشتوم،

that I consider to have achieved,

کە پێویست بوو سەرکەوتوو بم،

is I've found ways of communicating

ئەوە بوو رێگەکانی پەیوەندی کردنم دۆزییەوە

with my little brother and sister,

لەگەڵ خوشک و برا بچوکەکەم،

who as I've said are nonverbal. They can't speak.

ئەوەی کە وتم لاڵن و ناتوانن قسە بکەن.

And people would often write off someone who's nonverbal,

زۆرجار خەڵک وەک کەسێکی بێ بەها سەیری کەسە لاڵەکان دەکەن،

but that's silly, because my little brother and sister

بەڵام ئەوە گەمژایەتییە، لەبەرئەوەی خوشک و برا بچووکەکەم

are the best siblings that you could ever hope for.

باشترین ئەو خوشک و برایەن کە هەمووان ئاواتی بۆ دەخوازن.

They're just the best, and I love them so much

ئەوان باشترینن، زۆرم خۆشدەوێن

and I care about them more than anything else.

گرنگیان پێ دەدەم زیاتر لەهەر شتێک.

I'm going to leave you with one question:

بە پرسیارێک بەجێتان دەهێڵم:

If we can't get inside the person's minds,

ئەگەر نەتواین لە مێشکی کەسێک تێبگەین،

no matter if they're autistic or not,

گرنگ نییە کەسێکی ئۆتیزم بێت یاخود نا،

instead of punishing anything that strays from normal,

لەبری سزادانی هەرشتێک کە لە باری ئاسایی دەرچوبێت،

why not celebrate uniqueness

بۆچی ئاهەنگی بێ هاوتایی نەگێڕین

and cheer every time someone unleashes their imagination?

بۆچی هەموو کاتێک هانی کەسێک نەدەین خەیاڵەکانی دەرببڕێت؟
