that I started creating something called Tinkering School.

Tinkering School is a place where kids can pick up sticks

(قوتابخانەی تینکرین) شوێنێکە کە منداڵ تیایدا دەتوانێت دار هەڵگرێتەوە

and hammers and other dangerous objects,

هەروەها چەکوش، و شتە مەترسی دارەکانی تریش

and be trusted.

متمانەشی پێ بکرێت لە بەکارهێنانیان

Trusted not to hurt themselves,

متمانەیان پێ دەکەین کە ئازاری خۆیان نادەن

and trusted not to hurt others.

هەروەها متمانەیان پێ دەکەین کە ئازاری ئەوانی تریش نادەن

Tinkering School doesn't follow a set curriculum,

and there are no tests.

We're not trying to teach anybody any specific thing.

When the kids arrive

کاتێک منداڵەکان دەگەن

they're confronted with lots of stuff:

زۆر شتیان دەدەینێ

wood and nails and rope and wheels,

تەختە و بزمار و گوریس و پێچکە

and lots of tools, real tools.

زۆرێک لە ئامێر، ئامێری ڕاستەقینە

It's a six-day immersive experience for the kids.

شەش ڕۆژ لە ئەزمونێکی پڕ سەرکەشی دەبێت بۆ منداڵەکان

And within that context, we can offer the kids time --

لەو سنوورەدا، دەتوانین هەلی کات پێشکەشی منداڵان بکەین

something that seems in short supply

ئەمەش شتێکی ناوازە دەبێت

in their over-scheduled lives.

لە ژیانێی ئەواندا کە پڕە لە پلان

Our goal is to ensure that they leave

ئامانجمان ئەوەیە کە دڵنیا بین لەوەی کاتێک ئەوان دەڕۆن

with a better sense of how to make things

باشتر دەزانن چۆن شت دروست بکەن

than when they arrived,

وەک لە کاتی گەیشتنیان

and the deep internal realization

وە بیرۆکە قوڵەکە لێرەدا ئەوەیە

that you can figure things out by fooling around.

کە دەتوانیت لە شت تێبگەیت و لە هەمان کاتیشتدا کاتێکی خۆش بەسەر بەریت

Nothing ever turns out as planned ... ever.

لێرە هیچ شتێک بەو شێوەیە ناڕوات کە نەخشەت بۆ داناوە، هەرگیز

And the kids soon learn

پاشان منداڵەکان زوو فێردەبن

that all projects go awry --

کە هەموو پڕۆژەکە بە ناڕێکی ئەنجام دراوە

and become at ease with the idea that every step

هەروەها بە ئاسانی تێدەگەن لەوەی هەموو هەنگاوێک

in a project is a step closer

لە پڕۆژەیەکدا، دەمانگەیەنێتە هەنگاوێکی نزیکتر

to sweet success,

لە سەرکەوتن

or gleeful calamity.

یاخود هەنگاوێکی نزیکتر لە کارەساتێکی خۆش

We start from doodles and sketches.

لە وێنەکان و نەخشەکانەوە دەست پێدەکەین

And sometimes we make real plans.

وە هەروەها هەندێ کات پلانی ڕاستی دادەنێین

And sometimes we just start building.

بەڵام هەندێ کاتیش یەکسەر دەست دەکەین بە بنیاتنان

Building is at the heart of the experience:

ئەگەر بڕوانینە ناواخنی ئەزموونەکە، بنیاتنان لەمانە پێکهاتووە

hands on, deeply immersed

دەستەکان ئیش دەکات، منداڵەکان چوونەتە قوڵایی کارەکەوە

and fully committed to the problem at hand.

وە بە تەواوی پەیوەست بوون بەو کێشەیەی بە دەستیانەوەیە.

Robin and I, acting as collaborators,

من و ڕۆبن، وەک دوو هاوکار ئیش دەکەین

keep the landscape of the projects

پارێزگاری شوێنی کارەکە دەکەین

tilted towards completion.

بۆ ئەوەی کارەکان تەواو بکرێن

Success is in the doing,

سەرکەوتن لە ئەنجامدانی کارەکەدایە

and failures are celebrated and analyzed.

سەرنەکەوتنیش قبوڵ کراوە و ئاهەنگی بۆ گێڕدراوە

Problems become puzzles

کێشەکان دەبن بە مەتەڵ

and obstacles disappear.

ڕێگرییەکان ون دەبن

When faced with particularly difficult

کاتێک ڕوبەڕووی کێشەی گران و

setbacks or complexities,

ئاڵۆز دەبنەوە

a really interesting behavior emerges: decoration.

کارێکی زۆر خۆش ڕوودەدات ئەویش دیکۆرەیشنە

Decoration of the unfinished project

دیکۆرەیشنی پڕۆژە تەواو نەکراوەکە

is a kind of conceptual incubation.

وەک دایەنگەیەکی خەیاڵی وایە

From these interludes come deep insights

لە نێوان ئەمانەدا بیرۆکەی قوڵتر پەیدا دەبێت و

and amazing new approaches to solving the problems

ڕێگای نایابی نوێ بۆ چارەسەرکردنی کێشەکان دەدۆزرێتەوە

that had them frustrated just moments before.

کە تەنها چەند ساتێک لەوەو بەر بێزاری کردبوون

All materials are available for use.

هەموو ئامێرێکیان بۆ ئامادە کراوە بەکاری بهێنن

Even those mundane, hateful, plastic grocery bags

تەنانەت ئەو کیسە ئاساییە پلاستیکانەی بۆ سەوزەو میوە بەکاردێت

can become a bridge

دەکرێت ببێتە پردێک

stronger than anyone imagined.

کە زۆر بەهێزترە لەوەی هەرکەسێک بیری لێ دەکاتەوە

And the things that they build

ئەو شتانەی دروستی دەکەن

amaze even themselves.

تەنانەت خۆشیان سەرسام دەکات
